Rock n’ Roll Hair

Q&A with style creator, Jackie Rodriguez
Stylist @ Fringe Salon in New York, NY

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I describe this look as 70s-inspired, somewhere between bohemian and rock ‘n roll hair. It’s styled to look textured and effortless. My favorite part about it is the fringe or the bangs. These are textured and hit right above the brow, slightly longer at the sides and shorter in the middle. They frame the eyes and also grow out really well. My salon offers complimentary bang trims between haircuts so they stay looking fresh.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I recommend either a texturizing or salt spray on damp hair. For texture spray, I like my salon’s brand. It’s called Devoted from Fringe and Friends. For a salt spray, I like Salty Dog from Evo. The hair can be either blow dried or air dried. In either case, it makes the hair look like you came home from the beach piecey with lots of texture

I finished with a Dry Texture Spray from Oribe. It’s one of my favorite products, but any kind of texture spray or even a spray dry shampoo would work. If a client is using dry shampoo as a finishing product, I usually warn them that it can look white on the hair sometimes, so it doesn’t use a lot.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This looks works well for fine to medium hair types that are straight to wavy. There is a lot of layering in this haircut, so if the person had a high density of hair and wants it to feel lighter, this look would be great. These bangs look good on pretty much everyone, but are especially flattering if someone is trying to cover a long forehead or a more square forehead.

It’s a pretty low-maintenance hairstyle, so it works well for people who don’t want to style their hair every day or like to wash-and-go. The person wearing this will probably need a bang trim before they need another haircut, which is an added bonus.

Low Maintenance Layers

Q&A with style creator, Anna Draganova
Hairstylist @ Jasko Schroeder Salon in Menlo Park, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This look is an effortless, low maintenance and easy to maintain hairstyle. It has long layers with a shorter bangs that are connected with beautiful face framing pieces.

My favorite thing about it is that it’s very non -ommitted hairstyle. All of the movement in the hair is very soft and changeable. With different tools and products, you can make it very versatile.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

In this particular look, I used Unite Elevate Mousse mostly at the root area to give it more volume and Moroccan Oil on the ends for shine and protection.

After blow drying the hair, I curled the front area using a curling iron to show off the shorter pieces that were framing the face beautifully.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

In my opinion, this hairstyle is suitable for any girl! She can be stylish or low maintenance. She can be an independent working woman or a stay at home mom.

I would, however, recommend this for a taller girl with larger face features and hair on the thinner side, because the long layers are still making your hair look long and full. The soft, rounder bangs and shorter layers around the face definitely soften an overall appearance and bring out the best quality in the hair.

Boho Chic

Q&A with style creator, Magdalena
Artist / Advanced Cosmetologist / Independent Contractor @ Connyx Salon and Spa in Akron, OH

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as fearless boho, yet urban chic. This is a perfect summer hair color blend of natural root to light honey hues. My favorite thing about this look is how it transforms her fine yet dense natural blonde hair into a style that’s versatile and low maintenance.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

The main products I would recommend to recreate this look are Thermafuse Dry Oil as a detangler/heat protectant/blowdry prep, and Thermafuse Uphold Hairspray as finishing spray and heat protector/detailer for the ends when using a flat iron. And finally, Design.Me Puff Me texture powder as a finisher to give that hair some extra volume and texture.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This particular hairstyle works well with any hair type as long as the attention in dry detail cutting is there. This wispy haircut is ideal for long face shapes. The fringe will shorten the length of the face and soften strong cheekbones. The gradation of blonde just gracing cheekbones adds balanced structure to a slender jaw.

High Contrast Melt

High Contrast Melt hairstyle Instagram @thehairetic

Q&A with style creator, Jen Ferguson
Hairstylist @ Lunatic Fringe Parleys Way in Salt Lake City, UT

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I’d describe this look as a high contrast balayage or high contrast melt. I love that even though the blonde ends are so much brighter than the top, it still feels cohesive. Everything still blends together seamlessly.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

To create this look, I used Goldwell Silklift lightener with Brazilian Bond Builder to achieve her bright white ends while maintaining the integrity of her hair, and I used 5C and 6B by Colorly to create her beautiful, natural cool brown. I’d recommend washing with the shampoo and conditioner for Beautiful Color by Oribe to keep your hair moisturized and keep your color vibrant for longer. I also recommend styling with Serum Therapiste by Kérastase to keep your blonde ends strong and Imperial Blowout transformative styling cream by Oribe to repair damage while adding body, memory and heat protection to your hair!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this look for someone who has an edgier style, but doesn’t mind investing some time into caring for their hair. Those white ends can get brittle very easily, so at-home care and monthly deep conditioning treatments at the salon are a must! The color tones in this can look good on most medium to light complexion skin tones (you would probably only need to change up the tonality of the brown just a bit to compliment dark skin tones), and this kind of cut generally compliments rounder or heart shaped faces, but most face shapes can pull it off regardless!

5. Ravishing and Relaxed

This laid back look will have your fringe as the focus. It’s super casual and incredibly easy to create!

Laid Back Hairstyle with Fringe

How To Style:

  1. On naturally straight hair with minimal wave, apply a curl cream to wet hair. Use a diffuser to blow dry and create a bit of wave and texture.
  2. Use a round brush to smooth out your bangs.
  3. Apply a texture cream to the ends of your hair.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

Naturally straight hair with just the tiniest bit of wave is great for creating this relaxed look. A heart or oval face shape will work well for this style.

Recommended Products:

Paul Mitchell’s Sculpting Foam is great for creating natural wave. Use a diffuser (an attachment that goes on the end of your blow dryer) to create a soft, laid back wave.

Your long hair and fringe can be funky and fun without compromising on style and trendiness. This perfectly undone look is fabulous and will look awesome with or without bold colors!

Funky Long Hairstyle with Fringe and Bold Color

How To Style:

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

This look is awesome if you have a lot of thick hair. A round face shape will be complemented by this look.

Recommended Products:

If your color isn’t quite as bold as the hair seen in this picture, no problem! You can add a few clip-in extension pieces to create an edgier look without the commitment!

A back combing brush is crucial to creating big, sexy hair. It is much better for your hair than a small tooth comb. Spornette has a great back combing brush called the Little Wonder Brush. You should be able to find it online or at any beauty supply store!

  3. Spray with a strong hold finishing spray.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

This style will be incredibly easy to recreate if you have long hair that’s naturally straight. If you have a round face, this look will make it appear more elongated and slender.
