Q&A with Desiree Henderson
Which of your recent looks are you most proud of doing?
Tell us about this...
One of the looks that I'm most proud of recently is this amazing sunset hair. It was a long, almost seven-hour process! My beautiful guest came in with blue hair and a ton of it! My first step was to remove the blue color. I used Pulp Riot blank canvas and it worked like magic! She had several inches of dark new growth so I then foiled every hair in babylight sections to ensure maximum and even lift and quick process time. I was able to achieve a level 10 pale blonde canvas to work with. Starting at the root, again using all Pulp Riot vivid shades, I started with purple melting it into the pink and then finishing it off with the orange creating this gorgeous color with serious sunset vibes! To take my guest from her very dark natural hair and previously colored blue hair to this amazing, bright, multi-colored look, was definitely a long and challenging process! However, the end results were well worth it!
What’s your absolute favorite hair trend right now?
Why do you love this trend so much?
One of my favorite trends right now is braids! Now, I know braids have been around forever but their popularity has been increasing so much in recent years. There are so many different types and ways to incorporate braids into your style. I love using them for special occasion updos but braids can also be casual, chic, or edgy! The versatility of braids is like nothing else! My favorite braid right now is the figure 8, also known as the infinity braid. It looks so intricate but once you have it down, it's really very simple. As much as I love a neat, clean, and tight braid, right now the messier the better! Just when you think you've pulled the braid enough, stretch it some more! I created this rough messy look in minutes and I just love it! It's intriguing to look at and so chic and effortless! Braids are definitely having a moment in the hair industry and I don't think they're going away ever, and that makes me very happy!
What's been inspiring you as a hair artist lately? Lately, I'm really inspired by texture. Don't get me wrong, i love a good sleek and shiny bob, but right now, the texture is everything! The amazing curls on my daughter's head, a great pulled out braid, messy beach waves, all of it is inspiring to style. I'm discovering a real love of imperfections. Not every hair has to lay just right, not every braid has to be neat and tight. Even with upstyling, the "undone" updo is beautiful! It's all about looking effortless, and lots of texture is the way to achieve it! Embrace texture, have fun with it, and celebrate the imperfections!
