Super Sleek A-line

Q&A with style creator, Pedro
Stylist @ Gallery of Hair in Chicago, IL

How would you describe this look?

This is a classic, modern bob. My favorite thing about this look is that it is timeless – it’s always current. It is also a great fundamental haircut that is universal in the sense that it is easy to alter via blow drying, flat ironing, or curling.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This is a look that suits almost everyone with any hair type with some customization. I would advise the length choice be dependent on how often the client wears their hair up and their lifestyle.

Styling is quite universal as this look works air dried, blow-dried, flat ironed, diffused, curled etc.. I would recommend a spray shine to achieve the sleek look in the photo, a pomade for a wavy look, a root-booster for more fullness, and a light serum for the crisp ends.

Cool Mid Length Wavy Lob

Q&A with style creator, Sarah Simon
Hairstylist / Barber @ Sarah Simon Styles in Littleton, CO

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as the Polished Granola because it looks elegant and effortless at the same time.

What I love most about this look is the harmony between the cut and the color. The subtlety of her babylights adds the perfect amount of dimension without looking unnatural. This client previously had box dye on her hair, so during the lightening process, it pulled pretty brassy. I put a toner on her hair to combat the brass but was careful not to ash it out too much. The resulting color has the perfect amount of warmth, with just the right amount of ash added to keep the lob from looking flat.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This lob is incredibly versatile and works both as a dressed down look or styled for an evening event. To achieve the styling featured here, I used Super Skinny to constrict her cuticle which makes her hair less frizzy and helps it dry faster. I used Neuro Lift for extra body on her ends and to protect the hair from heat and I finished with Spray Wax to create her tousled, sexy look. I blowdried the client’s hair first to smooth out her ends and give her a bit of body, and then I went in with my 1.25 inch curling iron and curled away from her face to leave the ends out. Curling the hair away like this will create that beautiful beachy look. When I got toward the back of her head I started to alternate directions with the curling iron so the curls wouldn’t clump together. Immediately after I curled her hair, before it cooled, I pulled the ends with my fingers to keep the curls loose.

A client who wanted to achieve a similar look without spending the time blowdrying could let their hair air dry and then curl it with a curling iron. The style wouldn’t look as polished but would still be dimensional and flattering. I would recommend always using some kind of texture spray or wax to help grit up this style. The nice thing about using a texture spray is that you can spruce up your hair the next day and not feel obligated to wash it because this style isn’t supposed to be perfect.

For the color care, the client should use a sulfate free shampoo so the sulfates don’t get rid of the toner. Babylights are a great, low-maintenance hair treatment that grows out really nicely. Some people will only get babylights four times a year and some people like getting them done every two months. I recommend them to clients looking for a good balayage alternative.

Long, Luscious Layers

Q&A with style creator, Matthew Ingraldi
Hair Artist & Co-Founder / Owner @ Alibi Cutting Room in Toronto, ON

How would you describe this look?

This look was inspired by the “70’s Shag.” My version of it is has a soft elongated modern twist. Hair trends from 2017 and 2018 called this look the “Modern Shag.” I like to describe this look as “Layers on Layers”.

One of my favourite things about this haircut is its versatility. It is what we call a “wash and wear” look. Its shape and long lengths allow the hair to fall naturally (true to fit) as we see it with style and movement. The layers create a quantity of natural texture, volume, body, and fullness throughout the hair as each layer falls on the next layer.

Any advice for someone considering it?

If a client sat in my chair and asked me for this haircut I would explain to them the versatility of the look. How it can complement a long face shape by lifting it with layers, to a round face shape by elongating it with length.

This haircut can give long fine hair a touch of life, and thick curly hair balance. This look can adapt to many different lifestyles whether you like a minimal wash and wear look, or prefer to achieve a dramatic style by using more product and styling techniques.

Fun with a Little Edge

Fun with a Little Edge hairstyleInstagram @hair_by_raychel

Q&A with style creator, Raychel Ryckman-Martino
Hairstylist / Colorist @ Di Rosa Haircare in Franklin Square, NY

How would you describe this look?

The color and style I created on this expectant mom suits her professional lifestyle, yet is fun with a little edge to go along with her personality. The sandy yet golden tonality of the highlights on top of her golden brown base complement each other while adding dimension to this traditional layered cut.

What I like most about this style is the ease and versatility that comes with it. The bold fringe we have added makes her hair look completely styled even when in a simple ponytail.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This cut is great for new moms and women on the go that still want to look sexy. After using color-treated shampoo and conditioner, I set her up with a two-product cocktail for blowing out and styling this youthful look. First, a volumizing spray by KMS from roots to ends to give her heavy hair some body. Along with that, she will use a thermal protectant and smoother-in-one by KMS to protect and smooth her hair while blowing it out with a large round brush.

We have also spoken about the importance of sectioning out the hair when blow drying to protect the hair and lock in the achieved style. After the blowout is complete, finish with a little anti-humidity spray by KMS to protect the hair from frizzing and give it an overall shine.

This soft, flowing, full-bodied hairstyle with the right dimensional color would be great for almost any type of hair, at any age. For work or for play, up or down, this is a simple yet unforgettable style that will complement almost any woman.

Seamless & Trendy

Seamless & Trendy hairstyleInstagram @hairby_dmitry

Q&A with style creator, Dmitry
Hairstylist / Salon Renter @ DnA Salon in San Francisco, CA

How would you describe this look?

It can be described as seamless, trendy, and classy look. I like how the color goes from dark to light without any visible borders. It makes the hair look natural, yet interesting.

The benefit is that you can have this hairstyle for a while without worrying about monthly appointments for touch-ups.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This hairstyle looks great with long bangs. I recommend using a moisturizing cream, some dry oil on the ends, and a flat iron to emphasize the dying technique.

You can also make beachy waves and it will look just as perfect as straight hair.

Modern Texture

Q&A with style creator, Denis
Hairstylist @ Jean Louis David in Moscow City, Russia

How would you describe this look?

This is a very modern hairstyle with soft waves and texture. The fringe is long and provides a sexy finish to the look.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This look works great for fine to medium and long hair types and works well on all face shapes.

The hair was cut to one length with some frontal graduation and intensive texturizing.

To style, apply thermal protection on the lengths and ends of the hair and a volumizing product at the roots. Tilt the head down and dry hair quickly from roots to ends. Create soft waves with the styler of your choice, the muss the hair up a bit with your fingers to finish the look.

Sassy & Sexy

Q&A with style creator, Shawni Fronk
Hairstylist / Make-up Artist @ Blush Beauty and Co in Ogden, UT

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as sleek, sassy and sexy all rolled into one! My favorite thing about this cut is the etching in the back! It just shows have much sass she has. You would never know she is a mom of four!

Any advice for someone considering it?

This is the perfect look for someone who isn’t afraid to be a little bold. It works great for anyone who is short on time when getting ready. All you need is Jackpot from R+Co, or any other styling cream that has structure. Blow dry the hair into the shape you want, then spray a little texture spray and you are good to go!

This look is perfect for straight hair. Fine or dense hair works great, you just need the right amount of texture cut into it. This cut is not ideal for overly curly locks.

Dimensional & Trendy

Q&A with style creator, Atlee Gray
Master Hairstylist / Color Specialist @ Atlee Gray at Salon Lofts Westerville in Westerville, OH

How would you describe this look?

This look is dimensional and trendy. I love the different tones and undone feel.

Any advice for someone considering it?

The dimension provides a low maintenance look while adding long layers gives texture and movement.

To style, I used a 1-inch curling iron to curl all over, then flat ironed the ends to give that beachy look. I finished with a texture spray to break up the curls.

Chic Modern Bob

Chic Modern Bob hairstyleInstagram @jadestyleshair

Q&A with style creator, Jade Segal
Hairstylist @ LuxeLab Salon in Santa Monica, CA

How would you describe this look?

This look is a chic modern bob. The greatest thing about it is how easy it is to style. You get great versatility out of it because it has all the fun of a short haircut, but it has just enough length to wear it in various upstyles.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This look is flattering with several face shapes, depending on length, but is especially flattering to round face shapes when the front is kept long enough to hit the collarbone. It’s easy to style due to the length and can be worn both straight and curly.

If you’re looking to change up your style and don’t want a haircut that’s hard to manage, I say take the plunge and chop it short. Also, this a great in-between haircut if you have long hair and you’re thinking of going pixie length.

Laid Back Yet Polished

Laid Back Yet Polished hairstyleInstagram @curlsncopper

Q&A with style creator, Sarah Styles
Associate Stylist @ Tease Hair Studio in Hudson, MA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This look is laid back, yet polished. We decided to keep the layers on the medium to long side. I also kept the angle around her face a little longer, starting after the chin. My favorite aspect of the look was using loose curls to create more of a face framing effect.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

To recreate this look, use a prepping cream (or serum) and mousse on damp hair. Blow dry smooth and curl with a 1 1/4-inch curling iron. When curling, I like to take different sized sections, mixing and matching my directions. In the front however, I direct the curling iron away from the face.

Finish with a light hold hairspray, let the curls cool down, then run your fingers through! The specific products I used were Platinum 5-in-1 Styling Emulsion, Platinum Mousse and Platinum Take Shape, all by J Beverly Hills. I love these products because not only are they styling aids, but they have repairative properties as well!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I think this style is pretty versatile and the cut translates well with most face shapes.

This is a style that’s great for someone on the go. It is ideal for someone who likes to braid or pull their hair back, but also likes to have a style to it when it’s down.

A-Line With a Fringe

A-Line With a Fringe hairstyleInstagram @sonia_hairstory

Q&A with style creator, Sonia Yarkhani
Hairstylist / Owner @ Evolve Hair Studio in Toronto, ON

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

It’s an a-line layered bob with a fringe. I love how it shapes her face and pops her feautures.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I used Kevin Murphy Smooth.Again to get the straight, sleek look.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look is ideal for someone with medium density hair, a petite face and a long neck. The ideal hair texture can be slightly wavy or straight. This look could be worn on someone with curly hair, but it would need more layers.
