Q&A with style creator, Rosie Rodriguez
Hairstylist @ Haute Fringe Salon and Spa in Las Vegas, NV

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this as an elevated, long layered cut. I created subtle layers to add texture to the shape of this hairstyle.

My favorite part about this men’s haircut is the flowing, evenly cut layers that aren’t too dramatic.

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

To create this look, I recommend CoteCHHair Hybrid styling foam and a drop of Quinoa Smoothing Oil. The styling foam is weightless and helps provide a smooth look with thermal protection while blow drying with a round brush. The Quinoa Oil eliminates frizz and adds shine without weighing down the hair.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend the elevated long layered cut for anyone with any face shape, straight hair, or any kind of lifestyle. This look adds volume and texture while still being long enough to tie back into a man bun or ponytail for those get up and go days.

The Mob

Q&A with style creator, Cara D’Annibale
Hairdresser / Barber @ Heartbreakers in Brooklyn, NY

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I describe this look as a men’s long haircut, almost a men’s bob (mob). This client is my honey actually, and we’ve been growing his hair out since we moved in together last year. This cut is actually the end stage of where we’ve been trying to get to!

It has weight removal, but it’s also very textured and soft. No guy wants to grow his hair out or cut his very long hair shorter into a cut that looks like a mushroom or something out of a bad comedy scene. My favorite thing about it is that he still looks tidy and clean cut. There is nothing worse than wanting to grow your hair out as a guy, but looking homeless because it’s not tailored.

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

The products that I recommend for this look would be lightweight texture styling creams, pastes if you have heavy hair and still need weight on it, or a nice pomade that you can work through it and not have it be sticky or wet-looking. No gels! You want the hair to stay soft which is why something lightweight is best. You still want a little hold though so you aren’t touching it and pulling it back all day. Tucking it behind the ears is best.

My favorite guy products are Bumble and bumble Grooming Cream, Byrd Pomade, and Fellow Barber’s Styling Cream. There are SO many choices in terms of styling products for men, try a few and stick to one (or two) that work best. If they are lightweight, you can usually cocktail them as different lengths require different products sometimes.

Also, always remember to put product EVERYWHERE. Some guys only put it on the area that they feel is the most concentrated or problematic. Don’t do that. Products need to have an even application, regardless of if it is only doing a little work. You could think it looks even and then go outside and realize the top of your hair is slicked and tidy and the bottom is curling out and frizzy, or vice versa.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

The type of client I recommend this look for would be someone who is willing to be patient. Growing your hair out as a guy is difficult because there are some awkward stages (women can throw it up in a bun or pin it back). Once you get over those few months of weird hair, it’s all good! During that time you should be getting regular clean ups, mostly to remove weight (thin out) in order to leave room for your hair to grow long, not WIDE. Clean ups are also important so that homeless hair doesn’t happen. Cleaning up around the ears and in the nape area (neck) will ensure that the growing out is still looking fresh!

If you are losing your hair, guys, don’t grow it out. It will only make it look finer and thinner. Get a tight cut and move forward. The ideal client who wants to grow out their hair would have medium-thick hair that is not super curly or kinky. Wavy is easily do-able. This guy needs to have access to a hairdresser, not a barber. Barbers are amazing at what they do, but keeping hair long is not typically one of them.

Wearable & Carefree

Q&A with style creator, Victor Paul
Owner @ Victor Paul Salon in Costa Mesa, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

These are soft, natural curls in a low maintenance haircut. My favorite thing about it is it’s an easy, wearable and carefree look for all ages.

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

I recommend Curl Care Sulfate-Free Shampoo, Curl Care Custom Conditioner, Curl Style Primer and Curl Style Defining Creme, all by Bumble and bumble.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look is ideal for anyone who has curly textured hair that wants to grow it out while still having a fun and current look.

90s Grunge

90s Grunge hairstyleInstagram @liam_paul

Q&A with style creator, Liam Paul Robinson
Hairdresser in Leicester, UK

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

For me this style is best described as “effortless texture”. I take a lot of inspiration from 90s grunge and the likes of Kurt Cobain with this look, but with a more wearable texture and a slightly more matte finish rather than the greasy 90s feel.

My favorite thing about this style is how easy it is to wear for the client.

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

I find the key to this kind of styling is working with products that have a very matte finish as we don’t want to overload the hair with loads of shine. We want it to still look “groomed” between washes. For me, the key is working with sea salt spray on wet hair.

When it comes to drying, if your hair has a natural wave you can probably spritz some sea salt spray and let it dry naturally. If your hair lacks movement, you’ll need to work it slightly more. My key tip would be apply the sea salt spray, and then with the hairdryer on a medium heat, twist sections whilst drying and really screw your hair in your hands as you dry. Twisting and scrunching will help create bends and waves in hair, but keep it looking natural. Finish with a final spritz of sea salt spray or a spray dry wax if you want more hold.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I think this kind of styles suits clients with a laid back approach to style. I referenced 90s grunge earlier and I think this sums it up this kind of styling. It is very much lived-in and relaxed.

I think this kind of shape works well on both straight and curly hair types as the layers are kept long and very shattered. Curls don’t go too wild as the layers aren’t too short, and on straight hair the layers are helping to create movement.

Long & Disheveled

Long & Disheveled hairstyleInstagram @geinos

Q&A with style creator, Geino Äotsch
Hair Design & Barbering @ Rudy’s Barbershop on Division in Portland, OR

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This style could be described as a long disheveled look. If you want to keep it simple, then this is the look for you. I love this look because you shouldn’t have to think about how to style a messy rugged look into your hair!

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

For this look, we used Byrd’s Salty Coconut Texturing Surf Spray and Rudy’s Clay Pomade.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this look for anyone who isn’t ready to cut all their hair off but is definitely in need of a change. This is a low maintenance style that doesn’t require a lot of attention.

If you’re athletic or relaxed and need a sense of style but don’t want to work at it, the versatility of this cut just might be the perfect fit for you!

Tousled Long Layers

Tousled Long Layers hairstyleInstagram @martythomashair

Q&A with style creator, Marty Thomas
Stylist @ Marty Thomas Hair in New York City, NY

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would call this look a tousled long layered cut. I love how it complements his hair’s natural texture. The layers and weight of the cut look gorgeous on him with very little effort.

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

A great cut shouldn’t need a lot of product. I used Redken Frizz Dismiss Rebel Tame to lay his cuticle down and fight frizz and humidity. I finished it with a small amount of American Crew Fiber on his ends to give texture, add body, and enhance shine.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This is a unisex universal haircut. It can look amazing blown out and styled within an inch of its life but as seen here, but it looks equally as sexy straight right out of bed with a little product. It works best on a hair type with body and movement.

I love working with hair’s natural texture, so I adore when clients style their hair to enhance that. This model’s hair has a gorgeous natural wave that makes this style shine.

Men’s Shag

Men's Shag hairstyleInstagram @cailybjorn

Q&A with style creator, Caily Bjorn
Haircut Specialist @ Indie Hair Society in Everett, WA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as a men’s shag. My favorite thing is how versatile it is. You can wash and wear it for a laid back version, or add pomade and slick it back for a night out.

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

I recommend R+Co’s Control Paste for this look. It is flexible enough for long hair styling, but has hold and memory as well. It also adds texture and shine!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this look for younger gentlemen that are more laid back and lead an active lifestyle. It is ideal for someone who likes to look like they didn’t try too hard for their look. Think skaters, painters and artists!

This look works well on fine hair that has a bit of natural wave and suits men with any face shape. The shag can be adapted for anyone!

Naturally Edgy

Q&A with style creator, Jason Vieira
Hairstylist @ Cutler in New York City, NY

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This look is naturally edgy. Using natural textures in hair combined with a funky cut to allow the wearer to look stylish and “in vogue” without much effort. The triangle shape created with the one length cut is super cool and very on trend!

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

With this look, I recommend a “no blow dry” curl cream to help define the curls/texture, combined with a sea salt spray at the roots to create some volume and a beachy texture.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This recommend this cut for the a guy with curly/wavy hair who wants to be able to wake up and go without much styling effort, but yet still remain edgy. This is definitely for a guy who likes to stand out with big hair!

Simply Grungy

Simply Grungy hairstyleInstagram @mjdidthat

Q&A with style creator, Michael Jay
Hairstylist @ Local Honey in Nashville, TN

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would call this look simply grungy. My favorite thing about it is cutting it!

I cut his hair in a very organic way, taking out weight where needed and leaving only what needs to be left. I feel like when you give longer men’s hair too much construction, it starts to look like women’s hair.

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

The products I recommend to recreate this look are R+Co Mannequin wet to dry, then finish with just a bit of Evo Casual Act on the ends.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this look for anyone willing to try it! This look would not work on really fine hair. There needs to be a medium to thick density. This client has really thick hair, so a lot of our time together is spent de-bulking.

He is also a musician, so I like to make sure the hair is going to look good in motion. Just in general, I love doing long men’s hair. Anytime I get the chance for someone to go longer, I do it!

The California Classic

The California Classic hairstyleInstagram @danitygr

Q&A with style creator, Dani TyGr
Hairstylist in Los Angeles, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I like to think of this style as “The California Classic”. It’s that sexy beach boy meets LA model look! This soft layered haircut typically showcases long fringe with a deeper imperfect part. This cut is all about the texture. If the hair is left too heavy and bulky, it will leave your man looking totally outdated. It can be worn at different lengths from the length shown here to shoulder length.

I believe its appeal comes with the evolvement of men’s fashion trends. We all remember the beloved man bun which quickly transcended to the most recent tightly barbered, highly groomed trend. What’s next for men’s hair is this much easier lived in and effortless look that has actually been featured in men’s fashion for years.

This is one of my favorite hairstyles for men because once this shape created, the hair is free to takes on its own personality which makes the cut unique and original to the man who is wearing it! The other thing I love about this look is its extreme versatility. Whether your man is rocking a tux on the red carpet or a hoodie at the family bbq, his hair always looks great!

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

Men with this cut should let their hair air dry or lightly diffuse after a good detoxing cleanse and a hydrating condition. After that, this style requires little to no product! It is, after all, an “I woke up like this” look. Most of us know that it typically requires a lot of time and effort to actually acquire that messy style, but on naturally textured hair and with a cut like this, it’s easy!

One go-to product I recommend is a simple texture spray with a little grit or even a spritz of salt spray to enhance the body, texture and piecy-ness of the layers. If you like more control and aerosol isn’t your thing, try a light hold, low shine (or matte) pomade. Take a dime-sized amount of the pomade and emulsify it between your fingers (not palms), then simply massage it into your locks. With this style, just rememeber that less is more when it comes to finishing products.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look is best for a man that has some natural texture to his locks. If the hair is too straight or too curly, some time in front of the mirror with a few products and maybe even your lady’s hot tool may be required to achieve the best results.

Jon Snow Vibe

Jon Snow Vibe hairstyleInstagram @eklektikgurl

Q&A with style creator, Merideth Pedack
Hairstylist @ Argyle Salon in Bellingham, WA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

My favorite thing about this look is that it’s undone with a bit of a Jon Snow vibe. The loose waves are able have more movement with the texturizing that was done, meanwhile the shape is still square to maintain a masculine aesthetic.

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

To create this look, I shaped it with a straight razor to add texture and remove weight. I finished it with Bumble and bumble Don’t Blow It Thick leave-in conditioner to give the waves some definition and not leave a heavy product feeling in the hair.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I think this look would be suitable on any face shape. I recommend this style for someone who wants to enhance the natural texture of their hair, values versatility in styling options, and wants some ease to their look.

Johnny Depp-Inspired

Q&A with style creator, Danny Richardson
Owner / Stylist @ Black Cactus Salon in Sheffield, UK

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This 90s Johnny Depp-inspired look is one of my favorites! My favorite thing about it has to be the babylites added to create dimension and texture. This will make my guest feel like his style will last much longer as it’ will grow out organically!

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

I always use Sebastian Professional in my salon. I love the Dark Oil to smooth the cuticle and add body. The fragrance of sandalwood and cedarwood are an added masculine bonus! I add the oil then scrunch dry using a diffuser.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I’d always recommend this hairstyle for people with a good head of hair! It is perfect for someone with an edgy style that is into fashion. It is ideal for an oval or square face shape and would also work for someone with curly hair!

Low Maintenance Surfer Look

Q&A with style creator, Thomas R D Palmer
Barber / Senior Stylist @ Pickles & Co Barnets and Beards in Birmingham, UK

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

What I love about this look is that the texture and volume shows natural hair at its best!

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

I only used one product for this look. I know that’s hard to believe as us hairdressers tend to go for all lotions and potions. I just used my secret weapon which is Sirens Ibiza Sea Salt Spray. I use this product for adding texture and volume. It’s amazing and you really can’t beat it!

It can be used before and after blow drying and is great for both men and women with textured hair.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this style for guys or girls with waves or curls for a low maintenance surfer look. It is perfect for guys with good strong jawlines to add masculinity to longer hair.

Laid Back Layers

Laid Back Layers hairstyleInstagram @hairmerohrer

Q&A with style creator, Brittany Rohrer
Hairstylist @ La Vie Salon in La Crescenta, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as laid back. My favorite things about it are the little bit of layers and curl which gives off that natural beachy vibe.

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

To recreate this look, I recommend applying a sea salt spray to towel dried hair. After spraying, grab different pieces of hair and twist them in different directions, then just let your hair air dry. After it’s dry you can run your fingers through your hair and break things up to get that natural, messy, beachy look. I personally love and use Davines’ sea salt spray.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this hairstyle to anyone with medium length hair. It is great for those with thinner hair, but can be styled on thicker hair as well.

This style of hair is great for many lifestyles. You can be an artist, in the film industry, work retail, or even be a chef. This style of hair is easy to maintain and doesn’t take long to style.

Long Textured Cut

Long Textured Cut hairstyleInstagram @freedombarberco

Q&A with style creator, Michael Sponsel
Owner @ Freedom Barber Co. in Atlanta, GA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

The look is a long textured cut. My favorite thing about this cut is how effortless it is to maintain. The other thing I love about this look is the combination of the hair and beard. It is a great look for the fall.

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

I always recommend a grooming spray with this length of hair. On this cut, I used Layrite Grooming Spray and Layrite Beard Oil. It has a light hold and adds texture to the hair. The beard oil has a light, fresh scent and adds softness and a light hold to the beard for shaping.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look is great for anyone who has fine to normal hair. I always pay close attention to the thickness because to obtain the look, the hair should go down and not out. If the hair is of high density, I would use a feather razor to take out some bulk.

The face shape should be square or oval. If the face is too round, it tends to look too thick.

As far as who this look is for, I would say it is good for anyone who wants an easy style to pull up during the day and let down on the weekends. The look is great for someone who wears a suit to work (pull the hair up and messy) or someone who works with their hands (the model is a restaurant manager).

Wearable Rocker Shag

Wearable Rocker Shag hairstyleInstagram @carrieghair

Q&A with style creator, Carrie Gough
Independent Stylist / Educator @ Salon Royale in Chicago, IL

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I call this look the rocker shag. My favorite thing about it is all the movement and texture the cut provides. It’s a really hot look!

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

For my client in the photo, I used a volumizer product/root lifter that was blow dried into the hair, then used a light spray wax. My client’s hair is a finer texture, so I needed something light and airy for styling.

If your client has medium to coarse hair, you could use a styling wax or paste to finish, as well as a straightening iron for even more definition if needed. Yes, men use irons too!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look is best for straight hair with a fine, medium or coarse density. It is cut entirely with a slide cutting technique and a slide razor. The more dense the hair ,the more you have to get in there and break it up.

This look is for someone with more of a rocker style. It is a little rock ‘n roll, but still polished.

Shaggy Surfer Look

Q&A with style creator, Jon Franklyn
Barber Shop Manager @ Smooth Operators Male Grooming in Battle, Sussex

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is what I call the long shaggy surfer look. I created it by putting some long layers in and feathering the side fringes into the mid lengths and ends. What I love about this style is that you can create movement and style with ease.

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

I only use MUK products and they can be found on Instagram @mukhaircareuk. For this style, I used Beach MUK which is a sea salt spray. I sprayed six to seven pumps into his hair and finger dried it on medium heat and medium speed, scrunching the ends to create bend and movement.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this style to guys with medium density hair that is straight with a slight bend. If the hair is too thick or too curly, you can create too much volume and you will lose the sleekness. If the hair is too fine, you might not be able to create the movement and it will sit too flat.

This look will suit any face type, the only thing I would say is to be aware when you’re feathering the side fringes. Where the fringe falls brings attention to that point on the face. If there are any areas that your client doesn’t want to stand out, then make sure that the fringe doesn’t fall into that area.

Professional Yet Relaxed

Professional Yet Relaxed hairstyleInstagram @sulisbyron

Q&A with style creator, Tahlia Pileggi
Art Director / Salon Owner @ Sulis Lifestyle Salon and Spa in Byron Bay, NSW

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This look is the perfect style for medium to long hair because it is professional yet relaxed. I love the shape and the texture throughout the hair. It allows the hair to fall into place with little effort, which is a must for most men.

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

We styled the hair with Aveda Men’s Performance Grooming Cream, a product that is not only lightweight, but water-based. This means it doesn’t feel like you have too much product in the hair. We finished it with Aveda Texture Tonic to enhance the natural wave.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This style is great for any age group in any profession. With the right modifications, it can work on all face types and hair textures. My personal favorite though is hair with a slight wave through it.

Relaxed But Groomed

Relaxed But Groomed hairstyleInstagram @elpbarbershop

Q&A with style creator, Emma Louise Piggott
Owner @ ELP Barbershop in London, UK

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as relaxed but still groomed. It is a super versatile and low maintenance style thta uses the hair’s natural texture.

You can wear it loose for a more casual look, or styled back tighter and more groomed for a more formal occasion. I love this look because it’s a welcome change from skin fades!

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

I used ELP Shaper Paste and sea salt spray to define the texture. I used a diffuser to dry the hair, but you can let the hair dry naturally too.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look suits people with more textured hair types. The more texture the hair has, the more low maintenance the style will be. The natural weight of the hair will help keep the style in shape.

As I mentioned, this look can be worn casual or formal, so it is really easily adapted to most lifestyles!

Going With the Flow

Instagram @laurisa_hardgrind

One could describe this cut as “timeless classic” would be a safe bet to consider this was present in the year 100 and will still look great on men with long hair in the year 3,000. We’re somewhere in between those times and it now looks as good as ever.

Put Together Pro

Put Together Pro hairstyleInstagram @hairbyraynhigh

Q&A with style creator, Rachel Highfield
Master Stylist @ Soleil La Vie Salon & Spa in Dayton, OH

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This longer, brushed back haircut really compliments the beard by giving him a more clean and put together look. The beard blowout is necessary because when beards are as long as this they can sometimes look unkempt, which is not the look I was going for when styling him. I just wanted to show that having a beard doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t look professional!

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

I use Davines products. For this look, I used their Volumizing Mousse and Strong Molding Clay in his hair. I sprayed his beard with water and used Momo Hair Potion and Oi Oil while wet, then used a round brush to smooth it out.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this look on someone who has a full head of hair and can grow a full beard! It works best on men who have straight hair and can take a little extra time out of their day to style their hair and beard. Taking five to ten minutes out of your day is worth it to achieve a nice, clean and put together style!

Individual Rope Twists

Individual Rope Twists hairstyleInstagram @jahlocsofficial

Q&A with style creator, Kimberly West
Loctician @ Jah Locs in Atlanta, GA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

These are individual rope twists. I absolutely love this style because it allows the client to have the freedom of wearing their locs down without being in the face.

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

The product that I would recommend to recreate this look is called LocN Gel. LocN Gel is the best product that I’ve come across thus far. This product doesn’t leave the scalp itchy or dry and it leaves any style looking perfect for weeks. The best thing about it is that it does not contain any unwanted or harmful chemicals that most “other” brands have. LocN Gel is definitely my number one recommendation. Natural oils are also sprayed onto the hair to give the finishing look.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this look for anyone who is looking for something different, fun and low maintenance. Rope twists are very popular and well suited for those with mid-length to long locs. This style lasts a long time and once taken out, the hair will have a beautiful crinkle curl pattern!

Blunt Cut With Texture

Blunt Cut With Texture hairstyleInstagram @yukistylist

Q&A with style creator, Yuki

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This style is a blunt cut with texture. My favorite thing about this look is that it is very easy to style. He can also put it up if he wants. I did dry cut on him so I could see the natural flow of hair and work the details.

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

I Wave Enhance Mousse from MILBON. I recommend air drying the hair for natural movement.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This style will work for fine to medium hair types and any face shape. If someone is looking for easy styling, I would recommend this look.
