25 Beautiful Wavy Hair Ideas for Women Over 60

If you’re over 60 and are searching for wavy hair inspiration, you are probably seeking styles that are a little softer, more modern, and easy to maintain.

From what I see, the most stunning women over 60 with wavy hair tend to steer clear of big volume styles. They allow the waves to do the talking and keep the rest simple. A while back, a client of mine, after 20 years of having her hair blow dried stick straight, had a wave made with a 1.25 inch barrel and started crying because she said she was finally getting to be herself. It’s about finding your waves that inspire you while keeping it polished and sophisticated.

Many people assume that achieving waves entails more hair, product, and effort. In contrast, my favorite wavy haircuts are ones where the stylist does all the thinking and cutting, and where I don’t have to do much with the hair at home. The artistry in this sort of haircut is all in the layering. If you want the waves to fall beautifully and not appear too chunky at the bottom, then it is very important to have a lot of bulk cut from the ends. If you’ve been noticing that your hair is getting finer, or that the texture has changed, ask your stylist about point cutting or light razoring, as this can further enhance that airy look. Also, velcro rollers are also a great, underrated tool for achieving soft waves that look effortless. But first, I want to share some of my favorite hairstyles with you.

Elegant Soft Wavy Cut with Subtle Layers

#1: A Gentle Wave That Just Falls Right

For this style of cut, the layering does most of the work so you won’t even know it. The wave is soft enough to not scream ‘I curled my hair this morning’. Instead, it looks as if your hair was decided to work with you for once. My favorite thing is how it frames the face and softens everything without being too fussy. Length of the haircut is the sweet spot as you feel you still have hair, but it is not a battle every morning. Just a little styling cream in it and you’re practically done.

Lovely Beachy Waves with Soft Bangs

#2 Easy Beachy Texture with a Soft Fringe

We can see the relaxed feel from the beachy waves which is the whole point far as im concerned. The bangs really complete the look, and break up the forehead pulled focus into the eyes. If your hair is on the thinner side, this wave will be your best freind because it gives the illusion that there is more going on than there actually is, which is not cheating, it is good hairdressing.

Textured Curly Cut with Soft Volume

#3 Lively Curls That Still Feel Polished

Though we are calling it a wave, it is more of a curl, as you can see. I am including it because I know a lot of women over 60 with natural curls have been fighting them for decades, and this is kind of what it looks like when you finally stop. The cut is just above the shoulders, which helps keep it from getting too crazy, and the curls show the kind of definition that comes from a good layered cut with not a lot of product. That being said, if you go this route, you do have to keep up with your trims because once the shape grows out, the curls start acting up, and not in a good way.

Chic Textured Short Wavy Cut with Soft Layers

#4 A Short Wave That Feels Modern, Not Matronly

I love haircuts like this because they are short but have layers that still keep that longer hair appearance. I love seeing haircuts on fine hair that do not give a flat appearance. The light brown color looks great and gives the cut fullness and the soft layers allow for movement. This cut looks like you can do a towel dry, put in some texture spray and run your fingers through and put in no effort, but it looks like you did a ton. You may need regular trims every five to six weeks to keep the shape from losing its structure as it grows out.

Textured Wavy Crop with Subtle Highlights

#5 A Cropped Wave with Just Enough Warmth

The highlights look great! The colors are nice and warm. They look healthy and dimensional. I know a lot of women highlight their hair as they age because they’ve had bad experiences. I think they should steer clear of highlights. With subtle highlights like these, they keep everything looking alive. The layers frame the face without closing in which is just what you want. Most of the time this is a wash-and-go situation but I would stay on your cut schedule because the shape is what keeps it working.

Graceful Soft Waves with Volume

#6 Airy Shoulder-Length Waves That Don’t Try Too Hard

This haircut looks alive! The way the stylist layered the cut lets the hair waves move freely, creating a light and airy look that feels great. It’s especially great for fine hair, which tends to fall flat by noon. No more layering products or using stronger hold sprays, this hairstyle is your solution to fine hair frustration. The only thing that requires a bit more effort is a soft gloss treatment every few weeks to keep the sheen up. Fine hair has a tendency to look a bit dull if it’s not maintained, and while this hairstyle does a great job looking good with little effort, keeping it glossy will maintain the look!

Chic Soft Wavy Cut with Natural Volume

#7 Soft Volume That Looks Natural, Not Done

I enjoy how this sits just under the shoulders, along with a wave that gives it some body, but not enough for it to look like she slept in roller sets. The face framing pieces are all doing a lot here and are angled in a way that looks natural, rather than like someone used a template to do it. If your hair is on the finer side, a texturizing spray may be advisable to maintain the wave. To be honest, part of the appeal of this cut is that it looks good when it relaxes a bit, so don’t worry too much.

Soft Textured Waves with Subtle Highlights

#8 Sun-Kissed Texture Just Above the Shoulders

Great color choice! The highlights look a little more inviting and visually pleasing. The way the color is done it looks natural like she spent some time on the beach rather than just a couple hours at the salon. The length is nice and it’s just above the shoulder so it should move nicely and won’t get caught on any collas or scarves. I love this look, and it will likely look best on second day hair after the waves dialed down a bit, that means less work and you still look good, which is the best

Soft Textured Waves with Face-Framing Bangs

#9 Textured Waves with a Fringe That Actually Works

I’m a little picky about bangs on waves because they can end up looking wrong very quickly, but these ones are soft, piecy and not blunt, so they go with the texture instead of against it. The medium length gives you options and the layering gives that movement so it keeps everything from looking static or flat. If you’re thinking about adding bangs to your wavy cut, this is the picture to show your stylist because it demonstrates how the fringe can look effortless and not like some sort of project you need to manage every morning.

Textured Soft Curls with Natural Volume

#10 Soft Curls with Dimension That Doesn’t Quit

What really sets this apart is the color work. The highlights give so much dimension to the curls they almost look like they’re lit from within. That may sound dramatic, but that is actually what good highlighting on curly hair does. The shoulder length cut is flattering without being boring, and the volume is right in that zone where it’s full but not puffy. I’d say this is a style that rewards you with the best maintenance plan there is. Five minutes with a curl cream on wash day and then just leaving it.

Soft Layered Waves with Subtle Bangs

#11 Layered Waves with a Barely-There Fringe

I love these bangs for how they soften the top of the face without drawing too much attention to it. This is how I think fine hair bangs should be done. If they’re too thick, they eat up hair that you need for volume; if they’re too thin, they end up separating and looking straggly by lunch. These bangs are in the sweet spot. The wave through the mid-lengths is what gives this cut its life, and the layers are blended well enough that you don’t see where one ends and another begins. That is how you know the cut was done well.

Radiant Copper Waves with Soft Layers

#12 Warm Copper That Actually Suits the Season of Your Life

Women over 60 can look years younger with the right shade of copper tones. Copper tones add a warm glow to the complexion, bringing out the natural beauty and radiance of a woman’s face. Good thing is that too many shades of copper will not look like someone is trying to backdate. Loose waves and layers add a light breezy look to the overall cut. To be honest, copper is much more high-maintenance than other color options. Choosing copper means committing to color-depositing conditioners and leave-in conditioners to keep the copper from looking brassy in between salon appointments. But for a stunning look like this we can all say that the copper color is worth the maintenance.

Soft Wavy Lob with Subtle Silver Highlights

#13 A Silver Lob That Feels Current

I’ve shown my clients who are unsure about grey hair that modern and fashionable cuts can be done with their silver locks. This is great for those who are letting their natural silver show. If you’ve already embraced your grey hair, then this cut provides a lovely structure. The hair is cut to shoulder length, which tends to be the most flattering length for many. The soft waves create a more bend rather than a ringlet curl. If you want to try this style, all you need is a light mousse and a diffuser to dry it, or you can air-dry it.

Charming Soft Waves with Volume

#14 Waves with a Quiet Balayage

I named this color work ‘quiet’ because at first glance, the balayage isn’t visible. Instead, the hair looks healthy and more dimensional, then the color work starts to pop more gradually. That is the aim! Everything about this is soft. The waves are soft and shoulder length means everything stays manageable. She has that gentle sheen from the hair being well taken care of. If you choose the balayage option, the nice thing is that the grow out with it is basically non existent compared to traditional highlights, so you can stretch out your appointments, which I know is great.

Stylish Wavy Cut with Soft Bangs

#15 A Wavy Fringe Cut That Knows What It’s Doing

The fringe on this is especially good, it’s soft enough to blend in with the waves, but is still present enough to do her thing, which is draw the eye and soften everything above. I honestly think this cut would suit nearly everyone, the medium length is forgiving, the waves add interest without being high maintenance, and the overall shape is flattering in that way that you look in the mirror and think yeah, that’s it. You might need to hit the bangs with a round brush or a flat iron for thirty seconds if they get a little in the way, but that’s about it.

Soft Layered Waves with Natural Movement

#16 Blended Layers That Move Like They Mean It

The blending for this cut is awesome. You’ve described a cut where blending is done right, and I gotta say, blending is one of those things that turns a decent cut into an excellent one. Movement is the goal with blending. You should not be able to see where the layers start and stop. The face-framing pieces are doing their job, and I like how clean this looks. I find this much more preferable over an overly polished and set look. In the true sense this is a low-maintenance cut because it was cut well enough that it will mostly take care of itself.

Chic Short Textured Pixie Cut with Soft Waves

#17 A Textured Pixie with Just Enough Softness

Pixie cuts take more time than most hairstyles because there are small margins for error. Every detail matters, so small length and detail differences can make or break the look. This cut does a great job because it leaves enough length on top to create a soft wave. The texture helps the hairstyle not look too harsh or done. The silver-grey color is also stunning. More women need to be brave enough to rock this color. The downside to a good pixie cut is that you have to come in for trims every four weeks or so.

Textured Wavy Lob with Subtle Layers

#18 A Lob with Waves That Wear Well

You’ll like the cut on Tuesday morning when you are short on time or just don’t feel like doing much to your hair- this is what a well cut lob looks like. I appreciate that the layers are so subtle there is movement but she won’t look choppy or over layered. Waves like this come from a quick scrunch and product and definitely a walk out the door. If you have finer hair I would definitely suggest a sea salt spray. It will add just the right amount of grip to hold the texture without weighing anything down.

Textured Wavy Bob with Gray Highlights

#19 A Wavy Bob That Embraces the Gray

The texture looks great! The small roughness of the hair is a plus because it helps the hair catch the wave naturally. The mixed gray highlights are so blended, they look like a single piece. The shoulder length is that classic, goes-with-everything length that I always suggest to my clients! This look is a simple wash and go style because it looks best when it’s not overly neat.

Textured Wavy Cut with Soft Layers

#20 Soft Layers That Let the Wave Speak

This haircut is about simplicity. It’s about getting out of the hair’s way and letting it do what it naturally does. The layers in this cut are meant to support the wave, not to shape it into something that will be forced every morning. It’s medium length and airy, the type of hair that moves when she moves, and looks like it takes about five minutes to style which is what I want for my clients who have better things to do than stand in front of a mirror with a round brush.

Stylish Textured Waves with Soft Layers

#21 An Asymmetric Touch That Keeps Things Interesting

It gives the haircut some personality without making it one of those asymmetrical cuts that where you have to explain it to people. The waves are great and the layers are balanced so it achieves a modern look without being overly trendy, which is really hard to achieve. This look is really compliments round and oval shaped faces. The medium length also offers versatility. You can pin one side back, wear it down, or whatever feels right that day.

Soft Layered Bob with Natural Movement

#22 A Layered Bob That Flatters Without Fuss

This bob looks really nice with it’s soft layered look and the movement that it creates. I love the way this style has the hair falling and flowing instead of sitting like a giant helmet. Bobs can be very tricky with fine hair because they rely on having enough volume without looking poofy and this cut challenges that concept perfectly. It is a cut that I think would go with a lot of different hair colors which tells me that it is strong enough to stand on its own without taking all the focus away from the hair.

Soft Cascading Waves with Natural Shine

#23 Cascading Waves That Make Gray Look Incredible

Thinking about going gray, but still not sure? Let this picture give you the push you need! These soft waves paired with a beautiful silver gray color are simply stunning. This shoulder length cut keeps it stylish, and the shine is a result of impressive hair care. People are able to differentiate between a filter and good hair care. Gray hair is known to have a tendency to look a bit flat, but the waves take the hair to another level in terms of volume and class. This is great hair and absolutely deserves a quality purple shampoo to keep the tones fresh in between salon appointments.

Elegant Soft Waves with Subtle Volume

#24 Everyday Elegance Without the Effort

This haircut looks put together yet still has an easy appearance. This style works seamlessly for work weeks and gives you time to work other things and be more productive during the day. The segregation of layers is perfect and the waves along with the highlights really give the cut a good look as it continues to grow. I barely did anything to get the hairstyle that I got and people still loved it.

Chic Silver Waves with Soft Texture

#25 Silver Waves with Real Body

This silver hair is stunning! I believe the greatest feature of this style is the cut. The color provides something to reflect on and the light catches the different waves at different angles. The way it contrasts light and dark is astounding and flat, straight silver hair cannot achieve this. The layering gives volume just enough without thinning out the ends, unlike the fine silver hair that concerns me as it can go see-through very quickly if the layers are too aggressive. This style may look gorgeous in person, but it photos very well. Ultimately, the fact that it looks good in natural light on a Tuesday is what really matters.
