From the NYFW runways to glamorous red carpets to your local neighborhood sidewalk, one thing’s for certain: simple, relaxed hairstyles are a definite 2013 do.
While relaxed hairstyles can be achieved in various ways, those that utilize twists are particularly effortless. That’s because twisted hairstyles work with your hair’s own texture. In other words, they never ask you to fight against what you were born with.
Some of the styles featured below are soft and romantic while others are sweet and celestial, but all take on the uncomplicated elegance that’s so trendy today. Bonus: they can all be created in under five minutes.
High French Twist
Maegan over at the LoveMaegan blog created this high French twist, which takes on a sort of punky retro ’40s look. Both medium and long-haired ladies can pull off this style. In addition to a hearty application of hair spray, you’ll need small and large bobby pinks and clear plastic hair pins.
Upside Down Twisted Bun
This “upside down twist bun updo,” created by Tina of MakeupWearables, is perfect for a casual afternoon in slouchy-chic clothes. It looks trickier than it actually is, but still maintains that easy, breezy, “it just sort of happened” coolness.
Twist and Pin ‘Do
Curly haired ladies, gather around. This one’s for you. Hair Romance’s Christina — whose locks are deliciously curly in their natural state — teaches you how to create this oh-so-pretty “twist and pin” updo. Again, this style is quick and easy to re-create and does especially well on day two hair. All you need are bobby pins, though Christina advises you use them sparingly so hair looks soft instead of structured.
Boho Twist Updo
Perfect for the upcoming spring and summer months, this romantic boho twist updo is as lovely as it is simple to re-create. Kirsten Stoddard of Triple Max Tons gives you all the deets in her video tutorial. The whole style only takes four minutes to do, making it perfect for those days when you just want to get up and go.
Sexy Twisted Updo
Lindsay at Hairsalons.Asia gives readers the hair scoop for Fall 2013 NYFW. “One this is for sure,” she says, “NYFW featured relaxed hairstyles with natural texture.” If you take anything away from the runways, let it be this: hair ought to be sexy and undone. Lindsay featured a twisted updo look that hairstylist Odile Gilbert created for models who walked for The Row. Get the step by step tutorial on the blog.
