Are you looking for blowout hairstyles for women over 70? In my many years working as a hair stylist, I have found that the most successful hairstyles are the ones women have learned to work with, rather than against, their natural hair. A good blowout is about using the right products to help the hair do what it naturally would, most of the time, it is about coming to terms with the style the hair naturally wants to do.
About three years ago, I remember a 72-year-old client of mine who had a completely flat and straight bob that had hit her shoulders, and it had been like that for 15 years, all because someone told her that it was “appropriate”. When she saw the layers and the added volume at the roots from the blowout, she literally started crying. At that age, the added volume gets rid of the feeling of trying too hard and makes you look like you are being true to your style. I know it is hard to work with your hair, especially when it is thinning, but you do have options.

#1: Warm Copper Bob That Actually Moves
The subtle copper shade adds value to the hairstyle and compliments the skin tone perfectly. It gives warmth that cooler shades certainly can’t give wearing this style. The layered cut is enough to prevent bluntness at the ends as the hair starts to fine out, and that is exactly how it should be. A color depositing shampoo will be your best friends if you go for this style as copoper is a shade that fades faster than you would expect.

#2 That Effortless Layered Look Everyone Asks For
When clients bring in photos of cuts they want and then say, “I don’t want to do anything to my hair,” this is one of the closer cuts to that description. Blended soft layers will not leave anything sticking out in three days. The framing layers around the face provide a natural fullness creating the appearance of healthy hair, rather than styled hair. If your hair is fine to medium density, this cut looks best with a lightweight volumizing mousse applied to damp hair before blow drying. The hair needs to have body but no stiffness at all. The layers will need to be trimmed about every six weeks because they start to blend into each other and you will lose all the movement if you wait too long.

#3 A Pixie That Doesn’t Look Like Everyone Else’s Pixie
I work on pixie cuts more than most people know because they understand that there is a huge difference between a good pixie cut and a generic version. This example has all the details of a good cut. The gentile layering through the crown gives just the right amount of texture that the hair won’t lie flat against the head and the way it is cut around the face is considered because it opens it all up but doesn’t leave the forehead looking too exposed. The highlights are there to create a little subtle depth rather than looking streaky which I make the mistake of seeing with short cuts too often and I think that’s why people avoid highlights. This works beautifully on heart shaped faces. I’ve done versions of this on round faces too and it’s just as flattering.

#4 Silver Pixie with Real Texture
It will be worth your while if you are ready to get your hair cut to finally get your hair cut. This is a good solution for you if you are looking to give your growing out hair more character. A good amount of lift is achieved on a hair’s overall appearance just because of the way the hair is textured. All you have to do to keep the cut looking fresh is just a little bit of styling. I have to agree with you that it is amazing the way the style emphasizes your cheek bones and jaw. It’s even better that that is not a harsh look at all, its very soft. In cases of thin hair, layered pixie hair cuts almost always give the illusion of more hair than there actually is. Be ready to keep the ling of the pixie cut looking nice and tidy, because if it isn’t then it will look like a totally different, messy haircut.

#5 Light and Airy Silver Pixie
I love how ‘light’ this looks, and I don’t just mean the color. It has an overall light feeling, and the softness in the layers keeps it from being too structured. That’s good because a cut like this too precise on someone over 70 can be a bit harsh. The silver tones have beautiful dimension. You can see the variation in the light and dark pieces and that’s what gives it shine even in everyday lighting. This style is one of those where all you have to do is scrunch a tiny bit of texturizing paste through it after it’s dried and you’re done.

#6 Golden Bouffant That’s Worth the Extra Five Minutes
I will admit that this style does require more effort than some of the other options and that is totally fine, the end result is amazing. The volume at the crown is very old Hollywood, but still modern so it does not look costumy. The soft waves in the sides of the hair adds a modern touch. For those with finer hair, this type of volume can be reached using a good root lifting spray at the crown plus some backcombing. Just make sure to avoid excessive backcombing, you want volume, not a helmet. The warm golden color compliments everyone but especially this hairstyle. It brightens your face so you look fresh and awake. The warm golden color is lovely, but not everyone can use the same shade. If you have a lot of pink in your skin, you may want to go for something a little more neutral.

#7 Golden Waves with Face-Framing That Actually Frames
I often mention frame layers because they can be impactful and these are fantastic. The face framing pieces are lighter, shorter and swept back to pull focus to the eyes and cheekbones, which is the goal. The warm golden hue makes the skin appear brassy. With this skin tone, it really glows, and having the hair length just below the shoulders gives good versatility. You can wear it like this and down or pull it up half on days you don’t want to deal with it. The waves will look a little rough between washes though. A light flexible hold hairspray at the end of your blowout is great, and will buy you an extra day or two.

#8 Copper Layers That Work All Week
This hairstyle is impressive since it looks good on day one and stays good-looking for the rest of the week! That says something about the hairstyle! It’s described as warm copper; light reflects off of it, brightening warm skin tones and even skin tone without makeup! The way it was blended at the mid-lengths and ends allows freedom of movement: it will move when you turn your head, but it won’t flop down to be out of place when you lie down on it. Clients with this warm color often have a lot of color maintenance, and if you want to avoid it looking muddy, you’ll need to come in every 5-6 weeks for touch-ups. If that sounds like you, it’s a good thing!

#9 The Silver Lob That Does All the Work For You
I am most impressed by how effortless the cut looks. In my experience, the more effortless something looks, the more accurate the cut is. The face framing layers hit right at the eye line, which helps to soften the upper face and is more flattering. The mid-length is also a good choice; it’s long enough to have that hair feeling, but short enough to prevent dragging or looking thin at the ends. This is especially true when the density of the hair starts to change. A good leave in conditioner is going to help the silver hair look polished and hydrated, not dry and straw-like. Silver hair also has a tendency to dry out, losing its elegance without moisture.

#10 Soft Waves That Feel Like You Did Nothing
This style is my favorite! It really enhances the natural beauty of your hair. I get compliments all the time! The bends and waves are subtle and make your hair look more full and healthy. The layers are very minimal with just a slight graduation at the ends. This keeps that just got a hair cut look for longer. So if you don’t want to go to the salon for a while, that’s good news. For this style, I recommend some round brush blowout and trust me, the less you style it the better.

#11 Silver Pixie with a Playful Side
I love this pixie, and the lightness it has here. It’s playful rather than serious, and that’s really flattering. The top has enough layers and the right movement so that it isn’t stuck to the head and isn’t flat, and the tapered sides draw the eye to the neck and make it look longer. If you are considering going short this would be a really good option especially if you are concerned about looking too harsh. The softness of the texture helps keep it feminine and approachable. For drying, I would suggest a small round brush to direct the top pieces, but other than that, this style is about as easy as it gets.

#12 Layered Blonde with Highlights That Make Sense
I appreciate that the highlights work with each layer to create dimension rather than being randomly placed. The length just below the shoulders is perfect because the hair is heavy enough to have some control but the movement from the layers really shows. This kind of layering is especially important on finer hair because otherwise, it would look like just a drape of hair with no character. The waves look like they have been created with a large barrel curling iron and a round brush, but if you have any natural wave it will be even easier.

#13 Curled Silver Bob That Feels Easy
The bob style is one of my favourites. It is very versatile and can add volume to your hair and disguise any fine strands. The curls in this style are more on the relaxed wavy side rather than tight ringlets. The wavy curls are similar to those you achieve when you braid your hair and let it dry, and are complimented with a cheeky smile. It definitely gives off a positive energy and fun vibe. I know that this style is great for most face types too because it falls to the jawline. If your hair is on the drier side (like silver hair can be), I suggest putting a hydrating serum in the ends before styling. It will help your curls look shiny and not frizzy, and keep your curls holding their shape longer!

#14 Silver Waves with Soft Body
I love how this style looks with waves. While I understand that some lengths of hair may cause the waves to look a bit uneven, these look considered. The volume builds around the ears, which is great because that is flattering on most face shapes. I think it looks particularly good on rounder faces because it creates interest without drawing attention to the width of the face, which is great. It’s one of those illusions that work. A little product used to separate the waves will stop them from falling by the middle of the day.

#15 A Round Bob That Sits Just Right
Cutting round bobs can be tricky because they can look too rounded, like a mushroom. Conversely, if a bob isn’t rounded enough, it’ll end up looking just average. This one seems to land right in the middle of the two approaches, achieving the right balance of having shape to the cut, while being natural. The soft waves on the ends add some personality to the hair. The layering is almost unnoticeable, but that’s what is making the ends feel less heavy and blocky. This is a great cut for that wants to look polished and put together without spending too much time on it. For some added volume, place a set of velcro rollers on the crown of your head while doing your makeup, and that’s it, just grab and go!

#16 Silver Bob with Bangs That Work
I have a special talent for cutting bangs. Especially the fine ones. Bangs that are too thick will look heavy. But on the other hand, if they’re too thin, they’re just going to separate and show the whole forehead. This type of fringe is cut just right. It’s soft and wispy enough to not create a hard line with the rest of the cut, and it also draws attention to the eyes, which is always a good thing. The chin length bob is clean and polished, but it’s not stiff. It has a slight bend to the ends which makes it feel lived in, rather than like it was just cut in the salon. If you get bangs, just know that you will have to trim them yourself in between appointments, otherwise they’re going to drive you insane in about three weeks. Good hair cutting shears are a good investment.

#17 Warm Copper That Brightens Everything
A simple layered cut looks good with warm copper tones. The stylist did an awesome job with the color. The warm copper tones brighten the face and create a fun look. Different from neutral colors, the warm copper tones reflect light and create a fun look. She also did a good job with the soft layers. No harsh layers which is nice, and the cut has movement so we can avoid that triangle look from shoulder cuts that don’t have movement. For someone wanting to change things up without going shorter, this is a good option. There is quite a color difference and the color gives an added pop. If you have been a cool toned person for a while then you may need to go warmer on the lips as well because the copper and cool tones will contrast.

#18 Gentle Waves for Rounder Faces
The haircut I think suits our client’s face shape best is one that works especially well with rounder faces. The way the layers are designed gives more length and draws the eyes down instead of out. The finished cut will make the client’s face look narrow and will help soften features and will be low maintenance as the length is also manageable, which I know a lot of clients appreciate more than they seem to. For some of the clients that have finer hair, the waves will likely need to be supported a lot more throughout the day, and I recommend a thermal protectant with a light hold so you get protection and hold in one step.

#19 A Blonde Bob That Ages Beautifully
I would describe this hairstyle as a `forever cut`. You can pair it with any look for ages. The layers are slightly there (almost not there), but are keeping the ends from looking thin or boxy. This hairstyle works wonders for fine to medium hair. You’re not sacrificing density with this cut. You’re actually just encouraging better behavior from the hair you do have. The shade of natural blonde is warm and soft, and not too bright or cool. It looks like your natural color had a great day. For an easy look, I would suggest using a volumizing dry shampoo for some added lift on second day hair.

#20 Curled Lob with Subtle Fullness
Silver curls that hit the shoulders can look either fresh and stylish, or dated and matronly. It all depends on the size and number of curls, and how the curls are layered. The good thing about this example is that the curls are soft and look more like bends than tight ringlets. It’s elegant and creates the right amount of body without excess volume in the wrong places. It looks soft, natural, and framing, and is not trendy curtain bangs – it’s just a flattering look. If you want to achieve this at home, use a light curl mousse on damp hair and diffuse. It will give you definition without the crunch.

#21 Blunt Bob with Quiet Confidence
I rarely do blunt bob cuts as most customers think this is what they want. However, they come to find out that their hair just won’t work with them. When the hair behaves for this style, like fine and straight hair, a blunt bob is one of the most sophisticated looks one can achieve. All that is needed to avoid a flat look and disrupt the shape is a little root lift which this one does perfectly. Longer trims are required to keep ends in perfect condition so the thinness does not become obvious. This is a low maintenance style as little product is required, Just a smoothing cream and a raddle brush to finish it off and you’re good.

#22 Textured Bob That Looks Better Imperfect
What I like most about this bob is that it doesn’t seem to strive for perfection and that’s what makes it successful! The slight texture on the ends is ‘untidy’ and ‘piece-y’ in an modern way which a more polished version of this cut would lose. The side part is flattering and gives a nice asymmetry that isn’t too super trendy and on fine hair, the layers create just enough movement to make the hair shift and create shine. For air dried bobs, I think this is one of the few styles that really achieves it, and I know a lot of hair stylists say that and I definitely believe it for this style. I know it sounds contradictory but the rough dry look is intentional. The desired hair texture will be achieved with a sea salt spray and some scrunching while you dry it.

#23 Layered Silver That Moves When You Do
I can see how the various layers of this style catch the light as the hair moves. It’s that soft movement of hair over skin that makes silver hair so much more luxurious than just being grey. The length is perfect for tucking behind the ears without being heavy, and the layering is so blended that it is hard to tell where each layer starts or ends and that’s what good layering looks like. This is a style that will still look good days later as the difference during the week isn’t big between days one and four. It settles into the style and for most women that’s ideal.

#24 Asymmetrical Silver Bob with Personality
I love when my clients are excited to get an asymmetrical cut! These types of cuts are great because they show an opportunity to be creative. In this case, the asymmetry is slight, giving a nice contrast to her jawline. It is even better with that soft wavy texture because that’s how we get that flowing and natural look instead of having it looking too harsh. You may notice the longer side is layered, so she has movement in her hair instead of it just sitting flat. This will especially help those who have medium to fine hair because it gives the look of double the amount of hair. This is a style that will also require some maintenance because you don’t want your hair to grow out too evenly. If that happens, you will lose the overall look and shape so asymmetrical cuts require a lot of more regular appointments than more simple, traditional, symmetrical styles.

#25 Silver Bob with Just the Right Amount of Wave
I notice many poor examples of this haircut. Many of them have uniform waves, which makes them lose any feeling of individuality and look like a bulk order. This one has a beautiful asymmetric wave, where some individual sections have more waves than others, giving it an overall fab hair look. Jaw length cuts tend to be very flattering as they show off the neck without feeling too exposed and the texture keeps it all looking youthful. This bright a silver does need a little help to stop it from going yellowy and I would suggest a purple shampoo around once a week. Not more than that or it will start to deposit too much and look violet.

#26 A-Line Bob That Knows What It’s Doing
A-line haircuts feature an elegant design which is versatile and suits every face shape. Each A-line haircut is characterized by a longer front and shorter back which makes it very noticeable and is what sets it apart from basic haircuts. The addition of layers takes down the stiffness and adds movement at the crown which gives it volume. Layers are especially important to those who have straight and fine hair as it will prevent dullness. In fact, straight hair without layers can look awful. If you have an A-line haircut, you are expected to get frequent trims to maintain the sharp look of the angles at the ends. If you wait too long, your hair will just become a regular bob and the cut will lose its uniqueness.

#27 Below-the-Chin Silver Bob
One of the hardest styles to Master is a bob that grazes just below the chin. Any tiny mistake could ruin the style. This look is great because only minimal layering is necessary to avoid being too “ruler straight”. The result of the soft natural movement is fine hair appearing fuller. The healthy looking silver color means this hair is well taken care of. If you have dry hair and are considering a cut like this, be prepared for deep conditioning masks. Ends that look dry will be very visible, and with this length significantly shorter hair any damage will be very noticeable.

#28 Silver Lob with Face-Framing That Actually Does Something
You might think the term face-framing is just another passing trend, with its use primarily as a marketing gimmick. However, with this style, the technique is truly showcased. The baby pieces near the face fall to the jaw and offer a warm, inviting touch. This look is not just young, it is also youthful and there is a distinction. The collarbone grazing lob allows for movement and combined with layers throughout, the body will have enough to avoid feeling thin if the density is low. This look is ideal for clients wanting to celebrate their natural silver and make it a statement.

#29 Textured Bob with Wispy Bangs That Don’t Overwhelm
I am quite selective when it comes to bangs, but the wispy bangs are the kind I recommend to clients. They are less dense and don’t create that trapped feeling, so even if you don’t love them, they will be easy to grow out. Plus, they blend in well with the rest of the cut. The bob has nice texture to it; it’s neither too polished nor too messy. The length is also above the shoulders which makes it easy to style. For fine hair like this, I do suggest some volumizing root powder at the crown to prevent some flatness in the afternoon. Just tap a small amount and work it in with your fingers.

#30 Clean Silver Bob That Does the Basics Perfectly
Just a cut and color can help put you in a good mood and create a good sense of self image. Insit get too complicated, though. Bobs are beautiful, and the silver color makes it polished and extra cool. With minimal layers added to keep the cut alive, this style is ideal for the working woman. Simple paddle brush blow dry, and that’s it! No crazy styling required. Also, if your hair tends to get a bit flat, I would suggest washing it the night before and sleeping on it. You will find that some natural disruption provides better volum than any styling tool, and that second day hair can actually be the best.
