Stunning Graduated Bob

Q&A with style creator, Maria True
Salon Owner / Aveda Artist @ Just Imagine U Salon in Hudson, NY

How would you describe this look?

This is a graduated bob cut done with a razor. I like doing this cut with a razor because it gives flawless lines which allow for easy styling will just fall into place.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Works well on all hair types but especially hair that is medium to fine with a slight bend to it. A minimal product, just a bit of Aveda Phomollient and spray shine to really add shimmer to hair when it moves. Flat brush for a straighter look or round brush for more fullness. It looks great on people with a slimmer face and neck. You can really showcase this cut with dimensional highlighting or very dramatic on grey hair as you notice on my model.

Classic Wedge Cut

Q&A with style creator, Lynn Felix
Hairstylist @ ETCH Salon in Scottsdale, AZ

How would you describe this look?

This classic wedge cut is a versatile, elegant look for thick hair done with rounded graduation to flow with the shape of the head. It can be styled with a round brush to create volume and smoothness at the same time.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This cut works on thick wavy or straight hair, and it would also work on thin hair too. The style can work on a square jaw, oval face, and also a rectangle shape face. The ease of styling is done mostly with a round brush and a blower because it is done with the hair growth.

Q&A with style creator, Angie Mendoza
Stylist @ Hairology in Rockaway, NJ

How would you describe this look?

This look is classy but edgy all at the same time. My client’s haircut always looks very well put together, curly or straight, while still being fun and trendy. The color is the icy blonde that everybody goes for, without being too dull and washing her out!

Any advice for someone considering it?

Be patient and trust the process! Achieving a light, icy blonde like this takes time. For most clients, it won’t happen in only one session. I care most about maintaining the health and integrity of the hair before forcing it to lighten past its capabilities! As for the cut, short hair is something you really have to want! Some people think it’s the easy way out, but styling short hair does still take time. Find products that work for you and your hair type – everybody is different. Most importantly, have fun with it! You only live once, do the fun cut. It’ll grow back! Short hairstyles for women over 60 have to provide a fuller effect as many the hair has thinned for most women at this age and adding layers does this perfectly.

Elegant Stacked Bob

Q&A with style creator, Christina Carney
Stylist @ Eden Day Spa and Salon in Clarksville, TN

How would you describe this look?

The greatest part of this look is the body it gives to your hair and the shape of the cut! The color was done previously by another amazing stylist, and I enhanced her angled bob so it stacked a little more.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This cut is perfect for clients who love short hair or are thinning or have finer hair. It creates weight and gives an illusion of fullness. It requires at least blowdrying with a volumizing product (best result upside down) and maybe a small touch of a flat iron for smoothness. Thankfully with a short cut like this, the styling is very quick and minimal.

Perfect Cut For a Round Face

Q&A with style creator, Kathy Campbell
Stylist @ Salon Indigo in Fraser, MI

How would you describe this look?

The loveliest thing about this haircut is that it looks great pretty much on everyone. This look is easy to put together, grows out well, and gives lift in the crown and a beautiful framing around the face.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This haircut has the best of both worlds – shortness on the neckline for coolness and height for the crown. The angle along the jawline is becoming from a side view, and it’s modern and up to date.

I also did the HL & LL on this client, as she loves a bold dark & light contrast. In the nape area, I applied the dark color as well.

How would you describe this look?

This client had a Deva Cut. It is a short stacked A-line with a pop of cobalt blue to enhance her natural steel grey tone.

Any advice for someone considering it?

No matter what age, understanding your natural curl can be liberating and empowering. Educating the client with the proper product and technique is key. Curl Cream and Gel Cocktail plus diffusing for this client, results = beautiful.

Trendy Blunt Bob

Trendy Blunt Bob

Q&A with style creator, Brittani Cooper
Owner / Hair Designer @ Martelli Salon & Spa in Bozeman, MT

How would you describe this look?

The blunt bob is a classic haircut by design, but can also have an edgy effect, depending on how it’s worn. With the bluntness of the cut, I tend to follow the jawline either at the jaw or just below depending on the effect/edginess wanted while taking the face shape into consideration.

I really love to take a mix of a few warm blondes and add an icy blonde highlight to give a dimensional tone that catches the light and helps add texture. This idea of an icy blonde highlight also helps blend grays and extends the time between color services.

Any advice for someone considering it?

The bluntness of this cut is amazing and always gets compliments, but keeping it looking good does take some styling. Using a smoothing cream and blow drying straight is great if you have some texture in your hair. I also like to run a flat iron around the perimeter to keep it looking blunt and even.

This cut is easier to style the straighter your hair is, but doing a tousled beachy look with a salt spray can be a sassy alternative if the flat-iron isn’t calling your name every day. With the style of this cut, round face shapes should definitively take the perimeter below the jawline to help elongate the face. I also like to keep longer layers in the interior of the cut to add texture and give movement. Taking the layers to short can make it look to “stacked” and can take away from the blunt look that we all love.

Blondes aren’t the only colors that this cut looks great in. Doing a dark, medium, and lighter chocolate tones or a touch of a warm caramel looks great to and also adds the color dimension that we all like to see. The main color choice totally depends on skin tone and what natural color you’re dealing with. So don’t be afraid to have fun with different tones while rocking this blunt bob.

Flawless Haircut For Thick Hair

Q&A with style creator, Samantha Hope
Stylist @ Platinum Salon in Tampa, FL

How would you describe this look?

This look shorter in the back and longer in the front and is a layered bob styled with lots of volume in the back with a smooth sleek look in the front.

The color is a 3-toned highlight – a deep richer and darker color, a medium transitioning color, and a lighter blonde. The dark base completely covers the areas from the occipital bone down, so I avoided any harsh spotty lines when the cutting process started (graduation cut in the back). I always like to keep the lighter pieces in the front to contour the face.

With styling I start with some volumizing mouse and root booster, focusing the back, and smoothing serums in the front towards the face. I continue to round brush the back and front with a medium to larger round brush focusing and building the volume in the back. I then go in with our smoothing flat iron and smooth the front areas to really complement the cut and her face shape.

The best thing about this is my client’s reactions. She cried when she looked in the mirror. She couldn’t believe that was her hair. She felt so good about herself.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Styling time is one thing to really consider. Do you have 20 minutes to dedicate to styling it? You also need to consider the investment in tools and styling products necessary for this cut and color to look its best. I recommend a volumizing mousse (we love Paul Mitchell’s Extra Body Sculpiting Foam). A smoothing serum (Paul Mitchells Super Skinny Serum), a medium to large round brush, and of course a thermal protectant (Paul Mitchell’s Protect Spray).

If you have less time to dedicate to styling, I recommend that you do a shorter version of this cut.

The only face shape that I believe this cut doesn’t complement is those who have rounder face shapes.

Cool Neck Length A-Line Bob

Q&A with style creator, Natale Eccher
Stylist @ Hot Sear Salon in El Cajon, CA

How would you describe this look?

This is a classic A-line bob with natural highlights. It’s slightly stacked in the back and angled in the front. This client has straight hair, perfect for this sassy cut and the fine/medium weave gives her some fun color dimension. I love the A-line bob because it can be personalized from person to person, depending on the severity of the angle and the stacked layers.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This cut is great for someone with a round or oval face shape and great for all age ranges. Straight hair makes for easier styling, blow drying with a smoothing cream and flat ironing to perfect. Some wave or curl adds bounce and texture, so apply a curl cream or mouse to wet hair and scrunch or dry, then curl with a 1″ (or smaller) curling iron.

Sleek Angled Bob Hairstyle

Q&A with style creator, Lindsay McFadden
Owner / Stylist @ Basic Beauty in Kelowna, BC

How would you describe this look?

The best thing about this look is the dimension it can offer. Doing tone on tone color through the underneath allows for the texture of this cut to really shine through. I love how versatile it could be – straighten it for a chic look or curl it for low maintenance look. I would describe this look as a look almost anyone could pull off.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Remember, styling products are your friend. My go-to product for this look is a serum – Paul Mitchell Super Skinny works great for this. If you’re going for the straight look apply a small amount throughout the hair to keep it looking shiny and sleek. If you’re curling it or just air drying it for a natural low maintenance look, don’t forget to use product!

Super skinny is great for this also to help reduce any potential frizz and define the curl. I also love to have a volumizing powder to shake through the root and pump up the volume to help define any texture this cut has to offer.

Low maintenance, high maintenance whatever lifestyle you live, this is a great cut for all!

Stylish Layered Bob with Bangs

Stylish Layered Bob with Bangs
Instagram @madhair13

Q&A with style creator, Madilyn Trantham
Stylist @ Tramps Salon and Spa in Fayetteville, AR

How would you describe this look?

This haircut is a one length bob with short layers and side bangs. I would recommend this for any hair type that wants a fun and easy hairstyle to maintain! What I like to do with this particular style is to part it down the middle before cutting. That way when they style their hair they don’t have to worry about parting it in the same spot every time.

When it comes to styling, I use one inch round brush and focus mainly on the top layers and the bangs. I usually recommend highlights with this type of cut to help accentuate the layers, but I have talked to my client about her color history and she has decided that she wants to grow out her natural color, which is gray.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Make sure you have great styling products and tools. I used Aveda’s Phomollient Styling Foam and the Texture Tonic. Phomollient is a lightweight foam for that fine to medium hair texture that helps give shine and body. The Texture Tonic is great for defining and enhancing natural texture and showing off the layers in the haircut.

If anyone were to ask me what my favorite brush is to use for blowouts, I would say any boar bristle round brush, as it gives great tensions and helps smooths out the hair. When I blow out my client’s hair I like to act like the head is split in half and blow dry the bottom layers towards the face. The top half, I like to pull up from the head and away from the face. That way when it falls the texture tonic will do its magic and show off those beautiful layers.

This haircut is an all-around great cut for anyone who has fine to medium textured hair, but it may take more maintenance. I usually recommend this haircut for anyone who has a round or oval shaped face, but talk to your stylist and see what they recommend!

Edgy Ear Length Pixie Cut

Q&A with style creator, Stephani Cunningham
Educator @ True Salon in Marietta, GA

How would you describe this look?

This look is an edgy pixie, cut with a razor. The thing I love most about this look is how easy it is to style – finger dried and made piecey with pomade.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This look is bold for the over 60 gals. You have to own it! This style looks best on an oval shaped face and works with straight or wavy hair.
