Models show that a pixie cut can be beneficial to more than just the round face being trimmed. A proper pixie cut achieves the round face look without losing softness and elegance by creating perfect harmony with weight shifts, crown height, and fringe placement.
With round faces, pixie cuts work best when the crown is high and the sides are tapered and not full or chunky. I find most people seem to forget the dipped bang, an off-center or broken bang style helps avoid a round face boxed-in look. I like to keep the top section longer and add some softer micro-texture to the sides, as it helps avoid a harsh, long face.
I had a potential client the other day who told me how she had been searching “pixie cut for round faces” for so long and was more confused than before, and I totally feel that. Most of the ‘advice’ is so general, it misses the multiple possibilities for shaping and contouring a rounded face, just focusing on the greater diameter of the face instead of the overall look.
I think back to a couple years ago when I worked with a client who looked nervous to get her hair cut shorter. She was round faced and was looked nervous to get her haircut. She was told by her previous stylist that she “didn’t have the bone structure for it”. We decided on an edgy pixie, and added some volume on the crown while removing volume on the side and temple areas. When we finished, she started crying. That’s what a good pixie cut does on a round face. It complements your face and doesn’t fight your features to change your face shape. It knows when to push and pull. You an look through all the pictures you want, but at the end of the day, you have to trust your gut on what you want.

#1: Soft Lavender Pixie with Choppy Texture
That shade of dusty lavender color is so beautiful! I think the fine hair texture works nicely with the tone, as it’s not muddy, and so the individual strands can pop through nicely. The choppy texture on top also helps to keep it from looking too precious, which I tend to worry about with pastels on pixie cuts. If you’re thinking about a fashion color on a short cut, I think this is a good way to do it because you won’t be committed to maintaining length and color, so you only have to deal with one variable.

#2 Lavender Pixie with Lifted Volume at the Crown
The lift at the top of this one alters the entire face shape as the body of this one is wider. The lavender here is more saturated and I believe that works with the fuller layers because with volume, the light bounces differently and a more bold color performs better. The face framing layers might seem subtle, but all they’re doing is softening and bringing some shape where it’s necessary without losing the height you want on a round face. If your hair is thick, and you’ve been thinking that a pastel pixie would look like a puffy cloud, look at this and relax, good layering does the trick.

#3 Wispy Layered Pixie with a Soft Finish
This style isn’t as simple as it looks. There are many layers that make the style interesting. It’s best not to add extra details to the style. The hair should be fine and of medium density so that the ends feather out very little. This is really important because it helps to avoid drawing attention to the sides of the cut. This haircut is basically the definition of unbothered. You could easily get up, run your fingers through it, and be all set if you have some texture paste. You may need to do regular maintenance to keep the look because your hair grows really quickly with this style. Plan to come in for a trim every four to five weeks.

#4 Electric Blue Choppy Pixie
This style is definitely for the bold, but when a round face comes in wanting to go bold, this is what excites me. The chop breaks up the silhouette and keeps the color from looking helmet-y, plus the layers create movement so it doesn’t feel thick around the jaw. The blue is gorgeous! I won’t lie, color depositing shampoo and salon visits are going to be required to keep this anywhere close to washed out. Expect to be best friends with your shampoo.

#5 Short Curly Pixie with Asymmetric Length
The thing I find most interesting about this haircut is the asymmetry. It’s shorter at the back and the front has longer pieces. This allows the curls to cascade, and it all tilts forward in a really flattering way. This style offers a lot of bounce for fine hair that holds a curl naturally, or with a little help from a small barrel. The only thing I would mention is that fine hair can quickly cross the line from bouncy to crunchy. It can happen if you use a heavy product to keep the curls in place, so you’ll want to steer clear of anything that will end up giving you that crunchy cast.

#6 Curly Pixie with Lifted Texture and Natural Wave
These have a similar cut but the details in the waves are a little more loose and touselly and that ultimately creates a different feel to the style. It’s more relaxed and I think that’s what the majority of people are looking for but struggle to articulate. They want something that looks effortless but really good. For round faces, length that sits right on the cheekbones is crucial as it gives a visual angle that works in your favour. This is what I would call a wash-and-go situation for most people with natural waves, maybe just a bit of lightweight mousse when it’s damp and leave it.

#7 Wavy Pixie with Soft Definition
The waves look good, and if you want a style to last all day without having to adjust it, it’s nice that they look this way. They work best for finer hair because the waves create a texture and thickness, and you won’t need as much product. The length is good, just long enough to form the waves at the top, but short enough that it won’t be flat by the time lunch comes around. To maintain the look of these waves, you either need to pin curl them every night or in the morning, you have to do a quick touch up with a flat iron. It’s a necessary step and an easy one at that.

#8 Highlighted Pixie with Tousled Layers
I have to give credit to the highlights. The way they work with the cut is incredible. It gives us a new perspective on how the placement of color can alter the look. Highlights will create the illusion of more hair and more texture and with a round face, that’s the visual trick you want. The cut is clean with a little length on top and a nice taper on the side. The color adds something special with the combination of the cut. If you have fine to medium hair, this look is definitely something you should show your stylist.

#9 Raspberry Pixie with Volume Through the Top
This lovely warm raspberry tone is so pretty! The great thing about it is that it looks great in person and in pictures – which is not always the case with brighter colors. There is nice volume on the top and it is well layered so it isn’t too overpowering, and the sides are taken in enough so nothing looks too wide around the face. This cut would be fun for someone who has been playing it safe and is ready for a change! Just keep in mind if your hair is thicker the stylist will need to do some internal layering on top so that you don’t end up with a mushroom situation.

#10 Curly Pixie with Natural Bounce
I bet people might think it takes some great genes to pull off those effortless-looking curls, or maybe even some great diffusing techniques, but either way the results are stunning. For round faces, the volume on the top and temples, but not at the sides, creates a nice illusion of an oval shape, and that is what I really love about this. The careful layering means that each curl is distinct and has the freedom to bounce individually, rather than all of them clumping together in a huge clump. That’s what really distinguishes a curly pixie cut that looks intentional from one that looks like you’re just waiting for a buzz cut to grow out. The best part is, it’s super easy. All you need to do is put some curl defining cream in your hair while it’s still damp and then diffuse it.

#11: Teal Textured Pixie with Layered Movement
One of my favorite parts about this one is the unexpected color, and its texture that makes it work instead of looking costume-y, which is the *always* risk with blue-green short hair. The soft layered cut helps with the balance of fine to medium hair, as it is structured enough to hold shape. This cut looks good from day one, and honestly is better when it gets a little lived in around day two or three. All fashion colors fade, the teal will soften into a silvery seafoam which could be prettier, so don’t panic on the shift.

#12 Copper-Kissed Pixie with Natural Wave
The way the copper coloring looks so natural is like the color coming from the hair instead of just resting on top. The warmth of the color is nice against the skin too. I think the mix of copper and warm auburn tones is particularly underappreciated on pixies. The richer tones like copper are a nice change from the more common choices of lighter blonde and platinum colors. The natural wave gives the hair movement, and with no effort this can be every day hair goals. This style will need regular trims every 5 to 6 weeks to keep the layers looking fresh. To maintain the brightness of the copper color, a color safe shampoo is required, along with bright copper maintenance colors.

#13 Defined Curly Pixie with Height and Shape
If you have thick, curly hair and a round face, this is your template. Height on top is great for stretching and drawing focus upwards, and the sides are tight enough to manage the width on the sides without being too harsh. Curls can look overly processed at times, but here they look natural and alive rather than frozen. You might need a light gel or curl mousse to keep things in order, but the beauty is that when thick, curly hair is in a pixie, you have so much natural structure that you get to work with the hair rather than against it.

#14 Vivid Purple Pixie with Soft Texture
Purple is such a controversial color; it can look amazing or be totally wig level bad. In this case it’s the good kind. The rich, saturated violet combined with the texture of the cut isn’t too heavy or “look at me.” The fine hair works well with the color instead of casting a flat block of purple, the different strands reflect the purple light to create beautiful subtle, but noticeable, shifts. The maintenance required to keep this look is, 100% a commitment. If you’re the type of person who stretches touch ups to ten or twelve weeks, then this probably isn’t the color for you.

#15 Springy Curl Pixie with Defined Coils
I love these curls! The cut is clever because it’s working with her natural coils instead of trying to force things. The length looks about 2-3 inches, perfect for her to spring up and do their thing without being weighed down. On a round face, the tight frame around the cheeks is very flattering, as the curls contour for you by creating their own angles and shadows. If this was your cut, the most important things I would say to you are good leave in conditioner and don’t touch it once it’s dry.

#16 Tousled Wavy Pixie with Neck-Length Layers
This is a great pixie style for those who want to test out a pixie haircut, but want to avoid a fully short style. It keeps a little more length at the nape for some reassurance, while the textured top still looks like a full pixie. The waves look nice and effortless, and for such thick hair, they don’t take too much convincing to stay. I think this is such a great cut for any kind of transitional stage, whether you’re growing it out, or moving toward shorter styles. It is super flattering at this length and it’s nice that you don’t get that awkward in-between look that so many people hate. I would suggest some sea salt spray and just letting the hair air dry.

#17 Bouncy Curly Pixie with Tousled Layers
There’s so much fun to be had with this cut; the bouncy layers create movement and dimension without losing any of that volume, and with fine/medium hair this type of fullness is a win. I’ve noticed that curly pixies like this one tend to look best when the styling is kept simple, like scrunching some product in and diffusing for a few minutes without really thinking about it. The cheekbones are nicely emphasized here which is great on a round face; it’s all about letting the cut do the work in directing attention to your best features.

#18 Sculpted Curly Pixie with Rich Color
The construction of this shape is very good. The detail and the proportions are evident, as they are shorter in the back and sides to maintain a sleek look, and with more length and curl on top where visual weight is desired. The color’s richness and depth add polish to the entire look, which is sometimes needed with a curly pixie because without tonal richness, it can look a bit flat and one-dimensional. With medium to thick hair, this would be stunning. I believe it’s the kind of haircut that looks better with some length, as the curls will settle more into it as the weeks go by.

#19 Textured Crop with Side-Swept Fringe
What tops off this look are the side swept bangs. The diagonal line of hair across the forehead works wonders on round face shapes as it draws the eye up and across the face. The soft and wavy texture on top breaks up the bowl shape and offers a warm, approachable vibe that suits all ages. The style will be easy to maintain if you have natural waves as you’ll likely only need a light styling product on damp hair to keep the ends looking fresh. Overall, it will probably be the lowest maintenance style on this list.

#20 Volumized Pixie with Natural Movement
This is an excellent example of a hairstyle where it looks like a lot of effort has been spent, but the effort needed is actually quite low. The natural wave is very complimentary, and the layers are supportive of the style. I like the volume created at the crown. This provides elongation to rounder face shapes without any extreme changes. A little volume powder at the roots should keep this elevated all day, and that’s realistically probably all you need.

#21 Feathery Pixie with Side-Swept Fringe
The first thing that stands out is how light this haircut feels. The layers skim the head and have a feathered end that creates weightless look that is fantastic on fine hair. The side swept bangs offer a modern touch without taking over the face. Plus, it gives you something to play with on a day you want the hairstyle to look a little more polished. I would recommend a light hold styling cream so you can run your fingers through it without flattening the layers. It grows out nicely which is great because not everyone can get to the salon like I do every four weeks.

#22 Soft Curly Pixie with Tousled Texture
They were likely in a hurry that morning while putting this outfit together, and given the state of the hair, that seems pretty reasonable. The soft curls are not tight enough to seem stiff but are tight enough to look intentional. For round face shapes, that texture along the forehead and to the sides can really add to the look especially above the widest part of the face. This is especially true for medium to thick hair since the curls will have enough support to hold their shape and not fall. Also, the messy textured finish helps disguise any neglect when you’re short on time.

#23 Textured Pixie with Piece-y Bangs
A piecey bang on a pixie is a detail that takes the style to the next level! Here the bangs are broken up and textured, which prevents a solid line from cutting the face in half, especially with round face shapes! The length is short and the warm color is right for the model’s complexion! This is the type of style that gets the most compliments because it’s not obvious what has changed, which is a true testament to a great cut! It will require regular trims every 3-4 weeks to keep the bangs in check!

#24 Textured Pixie with Wispy Fringe
I love how soft and nearly invisible the bangs are! I especially love this on rounder face shapes, since they get to have something across the forehead without it closing off the face. There’s something about the light, slightly tousled texture and overall breeziness that feels so effortless. If you have fine hair, it will probably feel like this was made just for you. This is because fine hair achieves that wispy, airy look naturally whereas thicker hair typically has to be persuaded to do so. Thicker hair will likely require your stylist to take some weight out internally and maybe even use thinning shears in the bang area to achieve that same level of transparency.

#25 Short Curly Pixie with Soft Face-Framing Curls
These curls softly and gently curl around the face, creating a lovely soft curl border around the face. At this length, there is enough hair to work with, but not so much that it feels heavy, which a lot of people take for granted. For fine to medium hair with a few natural waves, this is a great option. And your left with the best of relaxed styling because honestly some of the best pixie cuts happen when people stop straightening their hair and stop fighting the texture.

#26 Curly Pixie with Cheek-Framing Layers
In a round face, one may not always try to soften the edges with curls. It is common to think that adding curls like that is to cover up something. The layers are crafted in such a way that allows every curl to form independently, and with that thick of hair, the curls provide volume without added weight. This haircut is considered low maintenance in terms of daily styling, but regular trims are essential to avoid the shape becoming bottom heavy as it grows. Round faces generally want the opposite.

#27 Tousled Curly Pixie with Relaxed Movement
The movement is remarkable! The hair looks free and wild while still looking good and that may be due to the curl pattern and the nice layering underneath the top layer, which you can’t see, but definitely can feel when you touch the hair. The curls would create the volume you may be lacking For fine to medium hair. With the length, you can push it off your face, or let it fall forward when you want a softer look during warm weather. For those of you who have had long and straight hair for many years and wish for a change, this is a good way to discover that your hair’s personality is a lot more than you thought.

#28 Lifted Pixie with Crown Volume
The crown lifts gives shape to the style that balances a round face. Great cuts never make a spectacle. The relaxed tousled texture haircut is great for medium density hair because it will have volume throughout the day. For those looking for something easy and short, this is one of the most versatile cuts on the list because it still looks like some effort was put into it. A quick blow dry will definitely do the trick.

#29 Feathered Pixie with Uneven Layers
The finishing details really make this haircut stand out from a simple short haircut. I would love to see more people request this haircut. It is much more interesting than the basic, all-one-length cuts and actually creates a lot of texture and movement. The light will reflect off of the layers of fine, medium density hair at different angles creating the illusion of more hair. This is a good trick to know! A couple of very subtle highlights would look great around the face. This really increases the dimension of the color. Since this haircut is a pixie, the maintenance is the standard pixie practice – a trim every four to five weeks to keep the layers sharp. She will actually have a pretty graceful growing out phase.

#30 Soft Layered Pixie with Subtle Color Variation
I like this color a lot because it adds dimension to the overall look which is something a flat single-process color cannot achieve. The side swept bangs creates the diagonal contrast across the forehead which is nice. This is great for round faces because it always seems to work! The layers are soft which allows them to move, but are also contained enough so this won’t be one of those cuts that looks different every time you style it. For some people, that consistency is exactly what they are after. If you have finer hair, this cut works well as it is designed to work with that density rather than pretending you have more.
