23 Perfect Examples of Short Haircuts for Oval Faces

Short haircuts for oval faces

Short haircuts for oval faces are a women’s hairstyle that’s cut between ear to neck-length and designed to complement an oval face shape. Believe me when I say you’re in luck – having an oval, neutrally shaped face is a dream for the masses because of its high versatility, especially when it comes to chopped haircuts!

First things first – you own an oval face if you have wide cheekbones and an overall rounded shape that’s more in length than in width. Among all face shapes, it’s easiest to style an oval face because any cut will almost always look flattering!

With a perfect face ratio like that, you really can have it all! Depending on your facial features and personality, you can opt for layers that frame your face, angles that highlight your cheekbones and jaw, or bangs that hide a long forehead.

Consider your hair texture because it adds a lot to the structure of your cut. If you need more inspo, take a look at how beauty superstars Ciara, Ashley Graham, Kim K, and Rihanna enhance their symmetrical faces with a fitting short haircut!

The power is really in your hands since you’ve got plenty of options to pick! So to our lucky oval-faced ladies, here’s a collection of the most popular short haircuts for oval faces!

How would you describe this look?

This cut is so versatile! The styling opportunities are endless, as she can wear it smooth and sleek (like in the photo), messy and full of volume, styled as a pompadour, or pieced out and choppy!

It’s cut with a 45° graduation on the sides (up to the temples) and back (up to the occipital bone), leaving the top section out. The undercut is to ensure she gets more volume on top and less on the sides. The top is it shorter in the crown area to longer at the fringe area, allowing for an A-line effect!

The color we chose to do only enhances the cut! The purple we put in on an angle to show through the layers and to add a bit of dimension.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This style is great for anyone with a round or oval face shape, who has fine hair. As far as styling goes, I find it’s quite easy to do.

Depending on what you’re going to do will alter the product you put in it. I’d suggest mousse and some form of smoothing cream or oil. For more volume, I’d blow-dry with a brush to help get the hair off the scalp. If you want something sleek, then I’d smooth out with a flat iron. If you wanted messy with volume, I would curl the hair with a flat iron or curling iron, depending on what you are comfortable with. If you want it a bit pieced out, I will put some wax or pomade through to break up the hair.

I think this style is great for anyone! Short hair is super easy and fast to do. My suggestion if you are looking to go short, make sure you ware prepared for it! But if you want it, I’d say go for it!! Hair is a wonderful thing; it always grows back.

How would you describe this look?

It’s a lip-length bob on waves. It’s a versatile bob shape that can work for many different hair textures. You don’t have to commit to having a part with this look, as it’s designed to be flipped from side to side all day long.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This look can be easily styled with a leave-in conditioner and sea salt product on damp hair left to dry naturally, then flipped around. It’s great for someone wanting a low maintenance style with a wow factor.

How would you describe this look?

This is a classic bob with blunt fringe and layers. This cut never goes out of style! I love the versatility of a bob. There are countless ways to cut it, wear it, and style from the length, amount of layering, and type of fringe.

Any advice for someone considering it?

My advice would come from letting a client know how to maintain this cut at home. I always explain the maintenance that goes into each haircut I provide. With blunt fringe (or any fringe, really), they need to know how to blow dry them properly. I want to make sure that this client knows the level of commitment something like this takes and know that they are comfortable with that.

How would you describe this look?

This cut is a feathered pixie with curtain bangs. My favorite part about it is all the soft texture and the fringe. This is her natural color.

Any advice for someone considering it?

First, I would say this cut is all about softness and shape. All I recommended my client to use is Bumble and Bumble Thickening Spray at her root to give her body and lift. We also used the Bumble and Bumble Thickening Mousse to hold the shape when she blow-dries. I suggested she used her hands to move the hair around her face and shape her fringe when she blow-dries.

This cut is great for someone who has fine-textured hair because it lays so nicely. Anyone can pull this haircut off if they’re confident with themselves and know how to style!

How would you describe this look?

I see this look, and it gives me life. It’s sophisticated, classy, and funky-sassy at the same time. The platinum color sets off this cut and shows off the fade on the sides and back.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Be aware of the maintenance for not only the cut but also the color. Platinum hair like this is best maintained every 4-5 weeks. The cut requires a fade every 4-5 weeks also.

Styling possibilities are endless, as you can wear it straight, wavy, or curly. Have fun with it! Volumizing powders, dry texturizing sprays, and fiber wax can be your best friend.

How would you describe this look?

This is a classic pixie cut using modern barbering techniques. My client is very low maintenance and requires her style to be fast and easy to take care of. It has an androgynous quality while still being soft with no harsh lines.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Take your hair type into account when picking this style. How much time and energy are you willing to devote? This client’s hair type is straight, fine, and medium-density with no definitive part. Styling is relatively quick with a light hold gel and pomade for definition after it’s fully dry. Just 5-10 minutes tops from wet to styled!

Layered Haircut

How would you describe this look?

I would call this hairstyle a shattered bob. I did the cut and color on this client. This client was a total transformation I foiled her entire head with highs and lows using all Goldwell colors. The short layers make the highs pop.

My favorite part about this look is the cut because she has straight hair. I gave it some texture and movement, and it just feels fun. I remember Kerri says, “I just feel like myself again.” She had such a fun, spunky personality that she needed her hair to match with.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This type of bob is best for fine, straight hair. If you have any type of curl, it will need more time for styling and the use of a straightening cream. It would just give you a different look. I used a mousse and finished dry with a spray wax to hold the textured look both made by KMS.

I would recommend this cut to people who have again straighter hair and struggle with achieving volume. This look can be customized depending on face shape, but it is best for oval, pear, and heart-shaped faces. If you like to wear your hair back and up, this is not the style for you.

How would you describe this look?

I love cutting this haircut! I love how versatile and flattering this cut is on so many face shapes and hair textures. It feels short and sleek while at the same time, being youthful and feminine. It’s a great shape for adding fullness and volume to fine hair. Soft swept bangs are a great way to bring attention to the eyes and cheekbones.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Anytime you’re going shorter with a cut; you’re looking at cutting it more frequently – a client should consider that when deciding on a length. This shape styles easily, though, so you could be saving time on your morning routine. This was quickly blow-dried with Oribe’s Maximista Thickening Spray at the root and finished with a little Oribe Dry Texturing Spray to add volume and hold without being too stiff.

For Straight Hair

How would you describe this look?

I would call this a grown-out pixie or shaggy pixie. My favorite thing about this is it’s very versatile.  You can put it in the back of your ears to expose your beautiful facial features, or you can wear it wet for that trending wet look. My rule of thumb is if I love the way it looks wet, then I know it will look fab when it is blow-dried.

For clients with thick hair (like the one pictured), I like to razor cut to add softness around the face and for the hair to be wispy.

Any advice for someone considering it?

I recommend this haircut for any woman who is tired of keeping their hair in a ponytail and looking for a change. I can recreate this cut on any face with some adjustments to fit the person’s profile.  This can be worn wavy, wet, blow-dried, and messy depending on the texture.

One thing to consider is the curlier the hair, and the more prep is needed to achieve this look. If you have thick hair, your stylist will need to cut it using a razor, scissors, and thinning sheers. I recommend a good blow dry leave-in spray, texture creme, and a light-hold hair spray. My favorite is from KMS or Goldwell.

I recommend applying some light products after washing and then following with a paddle brush and blow dryer. I like to air dry it a bit first for to at least 70 percent dry then proceeding to use my flat brush. I blow dry forward towards the face and then push it back, which will help me in finding the natural part. I finish with texture creme and light hair spray. I like to let my clients play with their hair while they’re in my chair until we find the perfect placement.

For Thick Hair

How would you describe this look?

This is my example of a textured, A-line bob. My favorite thing about this look is how it can either be a clean, structured bob with a simple classic blow out while easily transforming into a more organic, tousled finish.

My guest had very thick hair; therefore, a lot of texturizing and weight removal was a must. I achieved this airy bob using a variety of slide cutting and deep point cutting. She liked the “messy” look, and in my experience, that is the preferred outcome for most clients today.

To finish off this bob, I enhanced her natural wave by using my hands to mold the waves in place as I blow-dried the hair with little to no brush action. After being 100% dry, I finished this look off using the Kevin Murphy product “Touchable” (a light-weight spray wax), which gave her this lived-in end result. I believe this is a desirable look for many clients looking for a low-maintenance short cut while feeling playful and airy.

Any advice for someone considering it?

My advice for this look is to know that styling is always going to be a factor. Whether you have short hair or a certain hair type, the result of your daily look cannot all be relied on your haircut alone. I strongly do believe this is a great cut and style for any face shape or lifestyle. The shortness in the back provides easy styling and easy maintenance for a busy lifestyle while having the length in the front provides a flattering angle for any face shape that requires length to be added.

For face shapes that need to remove length to the face, a bit more shape through the sides is recommended, similar to the work done here. Product to achieve this look on the daily is a necessity. Anything to give control to the hair, protection and touchable movement is where you’re going to see the details of this haircut come to life.

What I used here was all Kevin Murphy. I pre-washed with Maxi. Wash to remove any previous build up on the hair, following with Young.Again.Wash, which is an ultra-rich and moisturizing shampoo to revive brittle hair that has been through the wringer, whether it be because of chemical causes or natural ones.

For conditioning, I used Young.Again.Rinse which also has an ultra-rich consistency to smooth the hair and to add extra fatty acids and proteins to rebuild the hair. For wet products, I used Anti.Gravity is an oil-free spray that adds volume and reduces oil build-up from the scalp. It removes static and helps control the hair weightlessly. Finally, for dry products, I used Touchable, which is a lightweight spray wax that helps mold the hair for ultimate texture.

How would you describe this look?

This look is fresh, modern, and free. I love the fact she went from shoulder length to a pixie.

Any advice for someone considering it?

I feel like petite features look good with shorter hair. Just have the courage to take that step. Sometimes shorter hair does take more work because you can’t put your hair in a ponytail, but I think short hair can be anywhere from fun, sleek, to funky!
