14 Perfect Examples of Short Choppy Bob Haircuts to Consider

Short Choppy Bob Haircuts

A short choppy bob is a women’s short haircut that’s cut at the ear to neck-length to create multi-layers and texture. If you have an attitude that falls anywhere between boho to rebel style, this cheeky version of the bob should be on top of your must-have hairdos!

The signature feature of a choppy haircut is its different, shattered lengths, defining the trendy tousled-hair appearance that everyone’s raging about. Rooting from the expertly done looks of celebrity icons Ashley Benson, Dua Lipa, Lauren Conrad, and Sienna Miller, this short and casual cut captured the hearts of women who aspire to be the boss both in work and in fashion.

“It’s meant to be messy, lived-in, and not too formal,” says Sam Kane, Boston haircut specialist and owner of the Black Room Salon. “Make sure you’re ready to put some effort in to get the texture you want. The stylist should guide you as to how to get the right outcome when styling.”

To nail this effortless style, Sam suggests to “ask for your stylist’s recommendation and ask how much maintenance and product cost to keep this look is needed before you cut it.”

Styling is definitely a breeze because of the cut’s lightness. Sam’s best styling and product advice? Here’s what she had to say: “use a product that will help define the texture [such as] a texture spray or a light paste through the ends to have some separation.

There are a ton of things to love about this textured hairstyle! That’s why you better keep going and scrolling for the trendiest short choppy bob hairstyles there are today!

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this style as a cropped choppy short bob. It is especially suitable for this client as she has very fine hair. The style created volume and movement in her hair. I created shorter textured layers on the top of the head to create height and volume.

This style can be adapted to denser hair by undercutting below the occipital (section of hair above neckline) and keeping layers slightly longer, texturing the ends for movement, and removing some weight. My favorite aspect of this style is the dimension and texture that is created with lots of movement. It is a romantic, whimsical style with a bit of edge.

Any advice for someone considering it?

The client will need to consider the level of maintenance that is required for this style i.e would they need to blow wave it for roundness and volume or straighten it for sleekness and texture?

Products are key for perfecting this look. On finer hair, I use Matrix Full Density Thickening Spray or Height Riser Mousse on wet hair, blow-waving volume in at the root and a full round look through mid-lengths and ends of the hair. Then, finish off with a mattifying texture product such as Matrix Height Riser or Puff Me. This creates texture in the hair.

On denser hair, I would prep the hair with a smoothing serum such as Matrix Smooth Setter. Start by blow waving roots sleeker and finishing off with a flat iron to create an edgy textured end. I would style with either a gel wax or Texture Spray such as Fave4 Texture Take Over to shatter ends.

This style is very adaptable to an array of face shapes by changing how it is finished off to suit facial features. I would recommend a center parting for a shorter forehead to elongate and lengthen facial features. For a rounder face shape, a severe side parting with one side tucked behind an ear will create a sharper jawline and features. It is a great style for weaker jawlines and assists in creating the illusion of a lengthened neckline.

Short A Line Bob

Hair Designer @ PR at Partners in Reston, VA

How would you describe this look?

This trendy A-line bob is so much fun with the texture and multidimensional color. It can be worn straight or wavy and still looks great! I love how soft the graduation is in the back, and the layers give the hair more volume.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This cut will complement a heart shape or oval face shape and can be styled wash and wear, flatiron, blow dry, or curl. Depending on which way you like to style it determines what kind of product you would use. I used the Moroccan oil light to add some moisture, shine, frizz control, and a thermal protector to prevent damage from the curling iron.

Short Graduated Bob

Hair Stylist / Colorist @ Lip Stick & Barrel Hair Salon in West Sussex, UK

How would you describe this look?

This look is called “textured catwalk”.

It is the perfect style for a graduated bob to have if you have a formal 9-5 job but have a wild social life. You can wear this style sleek with straighteners or messy/textured with a little bit of dry wax spray or texture soft clay.

Any advice for someone considering it?

I find it works best for people with fine to medium hair thickness, as it makes the textured pieces really pop.

It’s a really easy style for you to re-create at home, as it requires minimal maintenance. To create the textured/messy look, do a quick blast dry then add a little Affinage dry wax spray or texture soft clay. To create a sleek look, add a little Moroccan oil when wet, blast dry, and smooth over with straighteners.

The upkeep of this cut would be around 4-6 weeks, depending on how quickly your hair grows.

How would you describe this look?

This is a chin-length bob with internal layers. I love the blunt edge and how you can achieve a piece style.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This style is easy for most hair types but does require your commitment to styling or touching up daily. A fun trick with hair this length is not having to curl all the hair. You can get away with adding curls to the top layers only, and it looks great!

Short Angled Bob

Q&A with style creator, Melanie McLean
Hair Stylist @ Lavish District in Saskatoon, SK

How would you describe this look?

My favorite thing about this look is that both the cut and color are super low maintenance. I used a balayage technique to create this look. We actually started out with an amazing red and just let it slowly fade out. I started the balayage closer to the root which allows for longevity and a seamless grow out.

Any advice for someone considering it?

The cut is really textured and choppy which creates a lot of movement throughout the hair. My client has crazy fine hair, so this cut creates the illusion of fullness. This cut is versatile as well as it looks fantastic both straight and curly.
