If you want a buzz cut that is daring and compliments your hair texture and face shape, you have come to the right place.
Women buzz cuts have a very important consideration. Is this a choice that you have made to have your hair cut, or is something accidental happened? There’s a huge difference between looking like you made a choice and looking like something just happened to your hair, and that difference is only about a millimeter in guard length and the location of a taper chosen by your stylist. A couple of years ago, I had a client with stunning bone structure who came in wanting a buzz and she had an # 2 buzz cut all over, and she was looking all the same. Once we got her all cleaned up and went a good bit shorter on the sides with a thicker spike on top, her cheekbones became the center of attention. Most people don’t realize this but going from a #3 to #2 guard changes how your bone structure shows especially on that parietal ridge where the head starts to curve.
In my opinion, the better buzz cuts make it appear as though you simply asked for it, rather than losing a bet, or going short on a whim. A clean perimeter on a buzz cut gives it a more polished look and a softened nape makes it look less harsh when you turn around. The finish on a buzz cut makes a bigger difference than a lot of people think. If your hair is thinner, a buzz cut paired with matte product will create the illusion of more density. For coarser hair, a buzz cut with a product that has some satin sheen will help the textured ends shine as the light hits them. These finer details create the distinction between a buzz cut that looks intentional and one that just feels short.
Explore the styles below and find the one that makes you think _That’s the one!_

#1: Close-Cropped Layers That Actually Move
The technicalities of this cut are really interesting and it doesn’t read like one straight away, which is a great thing. The soft movement from the top layering is really nice and gives a movement that is not usual for a cut of this length. If you have finer hair this is one of the best options because the shorter length prevents the hair from lying too flat and the soft layers give your eye movement to follow. It helps to define the face, particularly if you have an oval or heart-shaped face, and depending on the shape it can really sculpt the face. Because the layers grow out you will need to come back for trims regularly to maintain that intentional look. When this style is fresh it always gets people asking who cut your hair.

#2: That Teal Though
I absolutely love the color commitment like this! You can’t hide on a buzz and all that teal is just super striking. In this case, it absolutely works, and I think it’s awesome. It’s the soft edges that keep it from being way too severe. If that makes sense, it reads more playful than punk. This type of close crop is really flattering fine to medium hair. You actually don’t need volume or movement to make it interesting because the color does all the heavy lifting. I will, however, say that the color maintenance is real. If you want it to remain as saturated as it is now, you’re looking at touch-ups every few weeks, and color depositing shampoo is going to be your best friend between appointments.

#3: Simple and Clean with Just Enough Texture
These haircuts use texture that literally works behind the scenes, It may feel like it’s not there, but that texture is what adds interest and avoids the whole look from being flat and one-dimensional. I would consider this for someone with fine to medium density hair and wanted something bold but in a more subtle way. I find that the shorter top pieces help frame the face, especially around the jaw and cheekbone areas. Just keep in mind that going this short means your scalp will be part of the look. If that is something that gives you a lot of anxiety, think it through. However, most people find that once they commit, they stop worrying about it pretty quickly.

#4: Color That Tells a Story
I appreciate this haircut because it is very artistic and requires skill to do such intricate color transitions from dark purple to bright teal. It must’ve taken a great deal of time and focus to pull off this transition so seamlessly. The buzz cut is very close to the scalp which helps draw attention to the color gradient. It looks best on people with fine to medium hair density so that the hair doesn’t distract from the color. I would suggest this more for oval or heart shaped faces the most, since it won’t add too much length. The colors will definitely need a lot of upkeep because vivid colors like this fade really quickly, and if you don’t do that, the gradient will end up looking really washed out.

#5 Lavender That Doesn’t Try Too Hard
I love that the lavender is more of a whisper than an over-the-top statement. With a buzzcut, that kind of restraint is quite attractive. The fuzziness creates a texture that is so much warmer than a fully shaved head would offer. This is going to be ideal for fine to medium hair. It will really suit oval and heart shapes since the colour is going to direct focus to the centre of the face. Just a note, lavender is a fashion colour that fades really quickly, so get yourself a toning shampoo and prepare to accept that the colour may not stick around for long.

#6: When Less Is Genuinely More
She has one of the most basic hairstyles which is great because it does not distract from the shape of her face. If your hair is thinner then this will be the best length for you because it reflects the light, thicker and healthier which gives the illusion of more hair. The shine is a result of great hair, not a bunch of products that you would normally need. This hairstyle comes with tradeoffs as you will not be able to do much with it once you have gotten it. You won’t be able to tie it up or change the position of the part or style. However, if you are the type of person to get bored of doing their hair each day then this will be perfect for you.

#7: The Shaved Design That Actually Works
Many shaved designs tend to look forced, but this one is executed well. The design wraps around the curvature of the head giving it some contrast without overcrowding the style. Furthermore, the readability of the design is enhanced by the shortness of the base, which gives the fauxhawk a sleek appearance rather than a messy look. The design’s placement works well with oval face shapes because it adds contrast without throwing off the overall symmetry of the whole face. This design will need maintenance every couple weeks because it grows in looking fuzzy really quickly. Plan around that when you decide to get it done.

#8: Clean Lines, Strong Face
The first thing you notice about this cut is how intentional the Edges are. They are so precise that they sculpt the hairstyle into a picture frame. They draw the focus directly to the face. Although the hair in question is fine and of medium density, the texture after the cut is smooth which is the biggest concern that people have when considering a chop this short. I would recommend this cut to people with an oval or heart face shape as the Edges accentuate and enhance all of the features and facial symmetry of the style. Adding a little bit of shine product to the scalp would go from great to excellent as it would reflect light and create an intentional dimension throughout the style.

#9: Soft Highlights Doing Quiet Work
At first glance, this buzz cut looks pretty simple. It’s just a simple buzz cut, right? Looking a bit closer though, you will see that it has been subtly highlighted with some warm tones. Surprising warm highlights in this length cut. When fine, straight hair is cut that short, tonal variation gives the illusion of more hair. With that length hair cut, the most important thing is to not go overboard with the highlighting. Highlights should suggest sun kissed hair, not the look of foils from some three hour session.

#10: Rose Tones on a Close Crop
What stood out to me was the rose gold. The color is subtle enough to look like a warm brunette in some lights. But when she flips her head, the pink undertones are stunning. I consider that peek-a-boo color on a buzz super classy. The length is really short, so it’s a great wash and go style. You can be out the door in just a few minutes. I really like the look of it on straight hair and even slightly wavy hair. It really elongates both round and oval face shapes. The color also softens everything. It is a warm tone that brightens the skin. The color does have a tendency to get brassy, so it should be done again every few weeks to keep that rosy effect. But, on the low end of the maintenance spectrum, it is pretty easy to maintain compared to more vivid colors.

#11: The Gentle Fade That Makes It
I really like this style fade because many women’s buzz cuts skip the fade and just do one length all over. That’s fine, but I feel like it misses an opportunity. The soft transition around the ears is what gives this cut its shape and creates a frame for the face instead of just sitting on top of the head like a helmet. If you’ve got a rounder face this is especially worth considering, as the fade creates the illusion of more length through the sides without actually adding any. It’s simple, it’s clean, and it wears well through the week without looking overgrown the way some buzz lengths can by day five or six.

#12: Defined Edges on a No-Fuss Cut
A buzz cut is a good option for someone whose answer to hair-related questions is, “I don’t want to think about it.” It is a style that you don’t have to touch anything to be done. You wake up, and that is it. The perimeter is doing all the styling work and giving it shape and intention without any product and without any effort. It’s optimal for fine to medium hair on oval or heart-shaped faces as it keeps the proportions of the face in check and allows the features to come to the front. Remember, not every hair texture is going to lie this smoothly at this length, so if you’ve got coarser hair it may want to stand up more and give a completely different look to you, which isn’t a bad thing, but just something to think about.

#13: Ultra-Short with a Polished Finish
A buzz cut with a little bit of length looks classy. The polished look of the cut comes from the fact that the hair is kept very short. The thickness of the hair in the cut above the ear appears healthy and balanced. With the hair this length, an oval or heart shaped face looks good because it draws attention to the best features and does not distract. If you want to wear a very short haircut like this, I suggest a shining product and not a matte finish. Earning shine at the scalp is part of the look. With this haircut you will not have a lot of styling options. You are only able to achieve a single haircut, but if this is the haircut you want, it will look good over and over again, which is what you get with this cut.

#14: Natural Texture on Display
I appreciate what a buzz cut like this one can do, because it shows the textures of the person’s hair, and that’s an honest thing to show. The added graduation to the cut also shows off movement to the style, rather than just looking like one solid piece of hair. When someone has tattoos or very prominent features, this style gets out of the way, which is nice. I’d say the best hair density for this cut is fine to medium, and this is one of those styles that gets better after a couple of days of growing out, because it will soften the look up a bit.

#15: Soft and Strong at the Same Time
I love how this cut feels both soft and strong at the same time. The length is bold, while the texture stops it from being too harsh — that’s the combination most women want when they’re asking for a buzz cut, but worry about it being too severe. This cut works for most face shapes because it has a soft finish and doesn’t create too many hard lines that would contrast with rounder features like a skin fade would. The softness of this cut shows off your scalp, which is a love it or hate it thing. A lot of people may take time getting used to it, but trust me, a healthy scalp with a close crop looks beautiful, and you shouldn’t be self-conscious about it.

#16: The Subtle Fade That Changes Everything
It would be great to see all my clients with buzz cuts try a subtle fade instead! It may take the same amount of hair, but it is much more neat and flattering. This cut is a perfect example of that. The sides blend into the top and follow the head’s natural shape to enhance it. It makes your hair look intentional. It is particularly nice on oval and heart shaped faces because it gives a nice sculptural appearance. If you have fine to medium density hair, it will be easier to see all those nice clean areas on the sides while the top has just the right amount of length for you to ”play” with. Even if playing with it means just running your hand through it and calling it done. Just something to keep in mind is that with a shorter cut, more of your face and neck will be exposed, so your skincare will sort of integrate into your hair routine more than it was before.

#17: That Fade Is Doing Heavy Lifting
The length and detail of this style indicate that a significant amount of consideration and time has gone into the creation of this style. The level of detail within this cut gives it the ability to avoid a cheap look and demonstrates that the purpose of this cut is to facilitate the self-expression of the wearer. The cut’s precise details and lines will provide the wearer with a new shape and appearance while accentuating their features. To give you this cut demonstrates that I appreciate the amount of time devoted to your self-expression and the money that was spent on the cut. The speed at which this cut will fade means I will see you in the next three weeks.

#18: Hot Pink and Owning It
A fashion color on a buzz cut is a big commitment, as I always say, because there isn’t really an y hair to be subtle about, and this hot pink is the epitome of full commitment. With such an ultra-short length, the color becomes the whole statement, and those defined edges keep it looking sharp and intentional instead of messy. This looks particularly great on square or oval face shapes as the boldness of the color is perfectly counterbalanced by an anchor strong jawline. The ideal hair density to achieve that smooth and uniform color saturation is medium to fine. The edges will require regular clean ups and the pink will need frequent touch ups to maintain it’s vibrant color, as vivid pinks tend to wash out to a salmon hue. Your stylist should recommend an appropriate maintenance schedule before you leave the chair.

#19: Neon with Purpose
I commend you for attempting this! The combination of blue and neon yellow suggests vision and artistry. Given this length, there is no margin for error when it comes to placement, and it appears to be a work of art. Due to the close crop, each individual stroke must be distinct. This will suit a head with fine to medium density hair, because the hair will need to lay flat. I won’t beat around the bush, the upkeep is going to be a challenge. Maintaining the neon hair color and design will mean multiple appointments, but if you view your hair as a canvas, then this is the cut for you!

#20: Short with Just Enough on Top
This look has a mix of military cut styles and personal flair. The buzz cut style sides give the freedom of a buzz cut but the longer top provides styling options that a full buzz wouldn’t offer. With fine to medium density hair the top gives the appearance of more volume. The length on top can add more dimension and gives the eye somewhere to land. I think this look would work on most people, but those with rounder faces should be a little more careful. The extra height on top can nicely elongate the face, but can also contribute to the overall width of the face depending on the length. So be sure to discuss that with your stylist. Overall this look is a good mix between a full buzz and a really short pixie cut.

#21: Light Playing Off Texture
I was drawn here by the light and depth play around the subtle texture. The different lengths create shadows and highlights and give the most depth. The medium density fine hair creates the illusion of more hair, and is most beneficial here. The haircut is modern and clean in a way that isn’t stiff. It really suits oval and heart-shaped faces, especially where the cheekbones are high and reflecting light. I wouldn’t recommend this exact approach for very coarse or thick hair though. Hair of that coarseness tends to defy styling at this length and stand upright, giving a very different impression, more hedgehog than sleek crop.

#22: Side Fade with Something Extra on Top
I enjoy taking my time on this kind of haircut because the texturing on top and the fade on the sides can look really nice when they balance each other out. When done well, it can look effortless. However, if it’s not done well it looks like two haircuts were thrown on one head. A fully done haircut of this type really draws attention to the fade and draws focus to the eyes and cheekbones. Hair that has fine to medium density looks the best because it keeps the fullness without being too poofy. This cut works best with oval and heart shaped faces. If you wanted to go a bit further, a pop of color through the top section would look gorgeous. It gives you a canvas without fully committing your entire head.

#23: Golden Blonde That Glows
A buzz cut is a style where the color and the cut play a symbiotic role in order to achieve the desired effect. Without the warm blonde buzz cut color, this style wouldn’t even be close to as good as it is. Every warm blonde buzz cut is equally as versatile as this one because of how much of a natural filter the color acts like. This allows brightening and reflecting in face regions of all skin tones. This is very close cut and clean cut style that’s extremely low maintenance. Although I typically would not say that about color, a blonde buzz cut does mean that your roots will show quickly. This means that if you aren’t coming back in for touch ups, you will have to accept that there is such a thing as good looking shadow roots.

#24: Precision with a Little Personality
The length of this cut is close enough to the scalp that it makes a clean cut because it follows/leans into the natural contours of the head, and on someone with proportionate features, it creates a very strong effect, almost as if the hair cut was made for that person, which if your barber is good, it was. In this case, length having the hair cut to this length is actually beneficial because there is no length working against you, so everything looks more uniform and intentional like it was planned. This cut is also unique for having subtle designs cut into the sides; they are artistic enough to not look aggressive, and they add personality without overwhelming the overall shape of the cut. Good clippers and a steady hand are what make those details possible, so you are going to want to get the sides trimmed every couple of weeks to maintain the detail.

#25: Close-Cropped and Unapologetic
This cut is all the way down to the skin and what complements it is the stylist’s ability to pick a style that truly fits the confidence. With this length, the haircut creates a frame for the rest: the face, eyes, tattoos, and piercings. It opens up and accentuates oval and heart-shaped faces and highlights the cheekbones and eyes in a way longer hair can sometimes get in the way. The artistic work on the side is a nice personal touch that keeps it from being too uniform. You will want to maintain this with regular shaving to keep the finish looking intentional. Probably more often than you’d think because even a few days of growth can soften those clean lines and the shaved details.
