Simple Yet Elegant

Q&A with style creator, Tiffany Obert
Stylist @ La Jolie Salon & Spa in Princeton, NJ

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as simple yet elegant. These loose, undone updos are the latest trend for this upcoming prom season.

This style is amazing and my go-to updo because it is easy, quick, and so much fun to create. It is a very versatile look that complements any dress!

Any advice for someone considering it?

I advise setting up a trial with your stylist before your big day to ensure your stylist has the ability to achieve this look with your hair type.

This style is perfect for someone who has medium to long length hair with a fine to medium density. It may be more difficult to recreate this updo on someone with super short hair or someone with thick/coarse hair. Your trial will allow your stylist to personalize the style to your hair type.

Half Updo with a Soft Curl

Q&A with style creator, Cristina Whelan
Hairstylist @ Headmasters in Hawk Green, UK

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as a relaxed but elegant half updo with a soft curl.

I love that from the front it looks natural with not too much fuss going on, but from the back, it’s softly pinned to create a waterfall of soft curls. It’s a look that suits any occasion without it being too neat or too perfect.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This hairstyle is super easy to create with longer hair, although it is definitely possible to create on shorter hair as well. I prefer to do this style on hair that isn’t freshly washed because it tends to stay better.

Part the hair right down the middle, then take medium-sized sections and curl the hair so it’s going away from the face on both sides. Once you’ve curled it all, run a brush through to make the soft curl. I would use a large paddle brush with a little serum to smooth out any flyaway hairs, then lightly spray with a medium hold hairspray.

Everyone’s face is different and some people like a lot of hair down around the face and others don’t. It all depends on your preference. Create a little backcombing, then loosely pin hair back from the sides, leaving it in your natural parting to create that relaxed look. It’s as simple as that!

I would say this look is great for proms, weddings, job interviews, or pretty much any occasion! It’s an all-around effortless look. If you’re the type of person who likes a more relaxed (but still glamorous) updo, then this is the one for you.

Classic & Elegant

Q&A with style creator, Jade DeCicco
Hairstylist / Make-up Artist @ Levato Salon And Skin Lab in Hinsdale, IL

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as classic and elegant. It’s a basic chignon which can be so versatile and, in my opinion, looks good on everyone.

Any advice for someone considering it?

If you like low maintenance hair, this is the perfect look for you. The hair is pulled up off your neck and face, and everything is tucked away neatly so you don’t have to worry about hair coming out or falling flat. This updo can be done with or without curling the hair first.

My favorite way to style this look is with some teased volume at the crown and the front twisted or swept back into the knot. You can decide if you want hairline pieces framing the face, and then add a good layer of hairspray to finish.

Timeless & Versatile

Q&A with style creator, Anessa Espana-Reid
Owner / Stylist @ Elevate Salon in Griffin, GA

How would you describe this look?

This look is both timeless and versatile. The smooth, shiny curls are set and brushed out so they are soft and bouncy.

From glam to natural and boho to classic, one of the best things about this style is that it works for so many different personalities. You just can’t go wrong with beautiful curls cascading softly around your face!

Any advice for someone considering it?

This look is easiest to achieve with thicker hair for easy volume and fullness. If you’re working with fine hair, using volumizing products like a root lifter and dry shampoo will help to plump the hair and give longer lasting results.

One question I always ask is what the neckline of the dress looks like. You want the focal point to be your face. As a general rule of thumb, if the dress is strapless or shows a lot of skin, you would want to wear your hair all down or half up half down. A dress with a high neckline or longer sleeves would call for hair to be swept up to make sure your face is not overwhelmed by too much going on.

However, to me hair is art, so it’s also fun to break the rules!

Formal Bobby Pins

How would you describe this look?

I was excited to try a hairstyle with bobby pins as an accent instead of trying to hide them. I was inspired by @maggiemh on Instagram.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This style is best if you have long hair past your shoulders. If a client is considering this look, definitely Google images to find ideas of what you want and show your stylist.

Bouncy Half Up Half Down

Q&A with style creator, Amber Gaudreau
Wedding Hair Specialist in Raleigh, NC

How would you describe this look?

This look is my go-to half up half down style. Big, bouncy waves have been huge in the bridal and prom world lately. For those who want their hair down but need a more dressed up look, this is the perfect option.

It’s beachy yet elegant, all while staying modern and in line with today’s trends. You can braid it back or go for a classy twist like you see here.

Any advice for someone considering it?

When it comes to doing an look like this you are going to want hair that is below your shoulders and on the thicker/coarser side. If you have finer/softer hair, add extensions to help hold the style. I’m obsessed with Luxy extensions and recommend them to all of my brides who are looking to take their look to the next level.

I also always recommend second-day hair for a look like this. To help hold the style, I use Kenra Texturizing Spray and Dry Wax to give it the grit and hold I need. I use a medium hold hairspray some during styling as well, but mostly I use a texturizing spray and keep the hairspray until I am ready for the finishing touches.

Simple Ponytail

Q&A with style creator, Denise Corales
Stylist / Colorist @ REVÓLVER Salon in Vitacura, Chile

How would you describe this look?

This is a very simple look. It’s basically a ponytail but with some small changes to can turn it into an event look.

The thing I love the most about it is that this ponytail makes you “look like you” and not as if you are trying to be someone else. It’s young, sweet, a little bit sexy, and you can wear it for many occasions.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Many people can wear this look, but it works better if you have long hair so that you don’t have to add extensions. Since it’s a look many people choose for summer or a hot day, make sure you use a heatproof product before you create the waves or straighten it. Along with protecting your hair, it is also going to help the style last longer. I used Sleek Mystique by Catwalk TIGI.

This is not a difficult look to create. If you are more of a formal girl, you can eliminate the loose bangs and straighten the ponytail. If you are a more laid back girl or even have curly hair, it looks even better with big waves.

Soft & Romantic Bun

Q&A with style creator, Caitlyn Draper
Lead Artist @ LoLa Beauty in Austin, TX

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as soft and romantic. My favorite thing about this look is how it is suitable for any nice occasion. Whether it’s prom, a wedding, or a work holiday party, this updo works!

Any advice for someone considering it?

Proper hair prep is essential in creating this look. Prior to creating this updo, I curled all of the hair using a 1-inch curling iron and curled all the hair going away from the face. I created volume at the crown by using Powder Play by Big Sexy Hair and backcombed after application. To create extra texture, I used Dry Texture spray by Kenra. I finished off the look with an Extra Hold Hairspray by Kenra.

This look can be created with shoulder length hair or below. Keep in mind that the shorter the hair, the smaller your bun will be. This style also works best with medium to thick hair. To create an even softer look, you can pull out a few hairs to frame the face and curl them.

Effortlessly Boho Chic

Effortlessly Boho Chic hairstyle
Instagram @shearsordye

Q&A with style creator, Allison Moerke
Owner @ Shearsordye LLC in Chandler, AZ

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This look is effortlessly romantic and boho chic. My favorite thing about it is the pulled apart braid that gives her a polished look without being over done.

What tips or products do you recommend to recreate this look?

Use a good working hairspray such as Outer Space and a frizz fighting spray like Foil from R+Co. Curl hair with a big iron (1 1/2-inch barrel) and clip the curls when done. Spray everything with hairspray again to make sure it last s all night.

Have fun with this look and don’t overthink it!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look works best for clients with medium to long, wavy hair that’s on the thick side and holds a loose curl. It can work on any face shape. This style is perfect for the girl who wants to be the next version of herself on prom night!

Textured Lilac Waves

Textured Lilac Waves hairstyle
Instagram @blowyourtop

Q&A with style creator, Chloe
Salon Manager @ Blow Your Top Hair Designers in Christies Beach, SA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

These are textured waves. I love how the dimension of the color is showcased by the waves, as well as the pretty lilac tone to the overall color.

What tips or products do you recommend to recreate this look?

To recreate the style, use mousse to prep damp hair, dry, and then curl with a hair straightener. To finish, use a texture spray/powder to help break up the curls, then apply hairspray.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this look for someone that wants a quick easy style that looks effortless. Most hair types would suit this style, depending on their length hair.

High Pony Upstyle

Q&A with style creator, Candice Marie
Owner @ Southern Belle Hair and Makeup Studio in Covington, LA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a half up half down upstyle. The ponytail is high on the crown of the head and the crown was teased to add volume. The rest of the hair was left down and curled with a 1-inch barrel curling iron.

What tips or products do you recommend to recreate this look?

I created this look with Kenra Thermal Hairspray to prep the hair. I then sprayed each section with Kenra Design Spray to set the curls. I added some dry shampoo at the crown for texture and volume. I finished off the look with a little Kenra Shine Spray.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This style is perfect for any party or special occasion. It’s great for homecoming, prom or bridesmaids, and it is also flattering on most face shapes.

Fun Ponytail Updo

Q&A with style creator, Candace Foley
Senior Stylist @ Simonson’s Salon and Spa in Plymouth, MN

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would call this a really fun ponytail updo with a nod to the braid trend that’s been going on for a while now. My favorite thing about this look is that it has a classic feel while still remaining youthful!

What tips or products do you recommend to recreate this look?

I recommend setting the hair in curls first. The curls will give you volume and longevity to the style. I like to use Keratin Complex Flex Flow working spray on each section as I curl. Backcomb and pin the height you would like for the crown.

For my fine-haired clients, I will also use Unite Texturiza spray for added volume and hold. Section the hair at the ears, clipping the front out of the way. Then just pin crisscross sections down the back until you reach the desired placement of your ponytail and secure with your binder. Wrap the front sections around the pony to hide your pins and give a finished look, and you’re done!

I usually refresh the curls with an iron and then finish with Kevin Murphy Session Spray to hold.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look is great for medium length hair and is perfect for almost any face shape!

#1 The Sweet and Sleek Side Pony

Written by Carly Bowers

A great side pony can be the perfect way to complement an awesome color or a beautiful side bang. It’s also nice because it creates elegance while keeping your hair out of your face so you can dance the night away without having to worry about your hair frizzing out!

How to Style:

  1. Start with dry hair, parted to the preferred side. If desired, leave out bangs.
  2. Secure your hair to one side with a hair tie. Ideally, the hair tie should be the color of your hair or clear.
  3. Before curling, spray each section with a light hold hairspray or a working spray. Using a 1 inch, or 1 and 1/4 inch curling iron, (it will vary depending on the length of your hair and your preference regarding the tightness of curls) curl sections of the ponytail.
  4. Take a section of hair and wrap it tightly around the ponytail holder. The end of this section of hair can either be tucked in the ponytail holder or secured with a bobby pin.
  5. Style bangs as desired.
  6. Spray everything with a finishing spray.

Recommended Products:

I love Moroccan Oil Strong Hold Hairspray for a final coat over everything after you have finished curling.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

This style really works well for any hair type. This is a great style if you have hair that tends to get frizzy and “poofy”. This style will allow it to be secured back all night and will elongate a square face shape.

Tip: I often prefer my clients to have “day old” hair when they are coming in for a formal style. This allows the hair to have a bit more grit to work with and prevents it from being overly slippery. It can also allow a style to hold better than it would with clean hair.

#2 The Totally Modern Mohawk

Written by Carly Bowers

I love this look because it can put a trendy and modern spin on an otherwise elegant and classic prom look. It is incredibly easy and all you need is a few bobby pins and of course, some hairspray!

How to Style:

  1. Start with dry, straight hair.
  2. Comb out any part that may exist and begin back combing the top “Mohawk” section.
  3. Once you have the desired height on top, take a large section on either side and smooth it out before pulling it back and securing it with a bobby pin. The sections on either side should meet in the back of your head. (Picture a half-up, half-down look)
  4. Begin smoothing the top mohawk section so that it lays over the bobby pins.
  5. Finish with a coat of strong hold hairspray.

Recommended Products:

This style will require plenty of hairspray, especially if you have finer hair. I like L’oreal Elnett Satin Hairspray (Strong or Extra Strong Hold). Also, the Little Wonder Hairbrush by Spornette is perfect for back coming.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

This style will most likely stay perfect all night on hair that has a coarser texture. However, with enough hairspray and back combing, you could make this work with fine hair as well. It will give height to square face shapes, and would be especially great to elongate a small forehead.

#3 The Softened Up “Sock Bun”

Written by Carly Bowers

By now, I’m sure the “sock bun” is a style you’re familiar with. It has become wildly popular, partially because it is such a simple and quick way to create an elegant and sophisticated look. Here’s a little twist on this popular look.

How to Style:

  1. Secure your hair back in a tight, high ponytail.
  2. Separate your ponytail into two sections, top and bottom. Clip the top section to the top of your head so it’s out of your way.
  3. Take the bottom section of your ponytail and, depending on the length of your hair, tuck the ends of your hair, creating a bun shape as shown in the picture. Secure the ends of your hair with bobby pins.
  4. Take the top section of your ponytail that has been clipped out of your way and separate that into two sections; one section on the right and one section on the left. Take either side and tuck the ends underneath the bun that you created in step 3. Secure the ends with bobby pins.
  5. Finish with hairspray.

Recommended Products:

I love a good working spray to secure a ponytail that is neat but doesn’t look “slicked back”. Try L’Oreal Infinium 3 Hairspray. You can also finish with this spray because it’s light but offers a significant amount of hold.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

The longer your hair, the more hair you will have to hide and tuck in to create a bun look. This style would be great for someone with medium hair. It will complement any face shape.

Tip:

After you wash, a good round-brushed style is a great base for this new spin on a classic style. It will keep the hair full of body while smoothing it out!

#4 The Soft Wave Stunner

Written by Carly Bowers

This timeless style has gained extra popularity in the past few years. It has become a total hit for all hair types and occasions. With a stunning prom dress and the perfect accessories, this simple style will complete the look. The bigger the hair, the better!

How to Style:

  1. After washing your hair, prep it with a root boosting spray or mousse.
  2. Dry your hair using a paddle brush and over directing your hair to create volume.
  3. Secure most of your hair back, leaving a section to begin curling. Spray each section with a working hairspray.
  4. If you have curly, frizzy hair that needs more than just a blowdry to smooth it out, run your flat iron over the top two inches of your hair, closest to the root.
  5. Depending on your preference regarding tightness of curls, begin curling each section with either a 1 and 1/4 inch curling iron or a 1 and 1/2 inch curling iron. (The bigger the iron the looser the curl).
  6. After each section has been curled, run your fingers through your hair for an even softer look.
  7. Finish with a light finishing spray.

Recommended Products:

I love Boosta Spray by Unite for a root booster after you’ve washed your hair. Bumble and Bumble’s Spray De Mode is great for both a working and a finishing spray.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

This style will soften harsh jaw lines and complement a fuller face shape. Thick, coarse hair will hold these curls beautifully.

Tip:

If you have finer hair that doesn’t hold curl very well, you will want to use a smaller curling iron. The curls may look too tight at first, but by the time you get to the dance the curls will have fallen a little and be just perfect! Also, if you have fine hair, skip step 6.

#5 The Side Swept Sweetheart

Written by Carly Bowers

This style is another extremely simple one that offers plenty of elegance and class. It would be the perfect complement to an off the shoulder dress or even a strapless!

Side Swept Sweetheart Long Easy Style with Headband
Style by The Brown Aveda Institute, Mentor, OH

How to Style:

  1. Begin with dry hair.
  2. Separate your hair, leaving out a section to begin curling. Spray each section with a working spray.
  3. Depending on how tight you prefer the curls, curl each section with either a 1 and 1/4 inch curling iron or a 1 and 1/2 inch curling iron. (The bigger the curling iron the looser the curls)
  4. If desired, put in a headband as seen in the photo, and style the bangs as you wish.
  5. Pull all of your hair to the desired side. If you feel it’s necessary, secure the hair in back to one side by slipping a few bobby pins in around your hairline on the back of your neck. Or, you can use no bobby pins and just let your hair rest over your shoulder to one side.
  6. Spray everything with a finishing spray.

Recommended Products:

A good curling iron is really crucial for most styles involving waves and curls. I love anything by the brand Hot Tools.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

This style will soften up any harsh lines around the chin or cheekbones. This style is perfect for any type of hair, fine, medium or thick!

#6 The Mature Messy Bun

Written by Carly Bowers

A “messy bun” is easily one of the simplest and widely used hairstyles. Why not dress up this popular ‘do a bit for your special night?! A simple flower or hair accessory could add yet another element to this simple stunner.

How to Style:

  1. Begin with dry hair and leave out bangs if desired.
  2. For more body around the crown of your head, backcomb (tease) that section.
  3. Using a basic ponytail holder, secure your hair to one side in a “messy bun.” (You aren’t aiming for any perfection here, the messier the better!) Be sure to use a ponytail holder that is the same color as your hair.
  4. Begin by pulling out small sections of hair out of the bun and re-pinning them with a bobby pin in a different spot. (Again, you’re not aiming for perfection here! Think random with no rhyme or reason.)
  5. After you have the desired look with your bun, style the bangs and spray everything with a light finishing spray.

Recommended Products:

Super Clean Spray by Paul Mitchell is a nice finishing spray for a little hold without getting too sticky.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

This style is great for any and all hair textures and types! It will also work well with any face shapes.

Tip:

As I mentioned before in the how-to steps, you aren’t aiming for perfection here. The bun will look great with no uniformity!

#7 The Half Up Hottie

Written by Carly Bowers

The half up half down hairstyle is a timeless classic that can be dressed up or dressed down in an instant. This specific style offers an elegant twist on an everyday favorite.

Half Up Tousled Easy Prom Style
Style by The Brown Aveda Institute, Mentor, OH

How to Style:

  1. Begin with dry hair.
  2. Secure hair back and leave out a section to begin curling with a 1 and 1/4 inch curling iron. Curl each section of hair.
  3. Separate a section on the top of your hair that spans approximately 4-5 inches. This is the “mohawk” section of your hair.
  4. Begin backcombing the top mohawk section of your hair.
  5. When you have the height that is desired on the top of your hair, secure the section back using bobby pins.
  6. Take a large section of hair on either side of your head, smooth them out with a brush, and secure each side back with bobby pins.
  7. When the top and sides of your hair are secured back, begin pinning the loose pieces of hair up to cover the bobby pins that are visible from pinning the top and sides. (This can be a bit messy with no specific rhyme or reason!)
  8. Spray everything with a medium to strong hold hairspray.

Recommended Products:

For this style you will need plenty of body and height on top. If you have fine hair, try backcombing after you have sprayed a bit of dry shampoo on your roots. It will give you that extra oomph that you are looking for!

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

This hairstyle will elongate a rounder face shape and will work best for people with thicker hair.

#8 The Pin Curled Pony

Written by Carly Bowers

Here’s a striking look that will keep your hair out of your face all night! This style would be the perfect match for a dress with a high neckline. All the action of this ‘do is in the back, which will make your makeup and dress pop!

How to Style:

  1. Begin with dry hair.
  2. Backcomb the crown section of your hair to the desired height and volume.
  3. Secure your hair back in a low ponytail. Be sure to use a ponytail holder the same color as your hair! Apply a small amount of smoothing serum to the ponytail to smooth down any frizz.
  4. Take approximately 1 inch sections of hair from the ponytail and curl them using either a 1 inch or a 1 and 1/4 inch curling iron.
  5. Pin the curled section above or to the side of the ponytail. Continue this process until the whole ponytail is curled. You may want to leave the bottom pieces of the ponytail curled but un-pinned, depending on the length of your hair.
  6. Spray everything with a finishing spray.

Recommended Products:

Before you curl your ponytail, I recommend using a serum to reduce frizz and create a silky smooth surface. I love Super Skinny Serum by Paul Mitchell!

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

This style is great for all hair lengths and types and would really complement an oval shaped face.

#9 The Braided Beauty

Written by Carly Bowers

Although this style will test your braiding skills, it’s very simple to achieve and creates a look of sophistication and class. Another plus about this style? The braid in the front keeps it out of your face and thus there’s no risk of any makeup getting smudged or frizz framing your face!

How to Style:

  1. Begin with dry hair.
  2. Using a comb, section out a two inch band of the hair around your face. Secure the rest of your hair back.
  3. Part your hair where desired.
  4. Begin braiding on either side of the part. After you have French braided the 2 inch sections on either side of your face, secure the end of the braid with a small rubber band. (It doesn’t have to look pretty, as you will be pinning the braids back and securing them with bobby pins later on.)
  5. Curl the remaining hair that is not in the braids. A 1 and 1/4 inch curling iron will do the trick!
  6. Pin the braids on either side with bobby pins. I would recommend hiding the pins underneath some curls. Remove the ponytail holders from the braids. Curl the ends of the braids that may now not be braided since you have removed the ponytail holders.
  7. Finish by spraying everything with a light finishing spray.

Recommended Products:

If you have extra fine hair, I would suggest spraying the section that will be braided with a light working spray, like Spray and Play by Big Sexy Hair. This will give your hair a bit more “grit” and allow you to get a better grip on pieces while French braiding!

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

Fine or thick hair will work well for this style. It would complement someone with a small forehead.

Tip:

When doing a French braid like this, you may want to work with day old hair. By not washing your hair on the big day, you allow some natural oils to build up which will help the braids stay better.

  3. Complete putting in the hot rollers and allow them time to cool.
  4. Remove the hot rollers and run your fingers through your hair.

Recommended Products:

Hot rollers can be an awesome styling tool. Conair and Hot Tools both make affordable hot rollers that do a great job of adding body and bounce to the hair.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

This style will work best for people with short to medium length hair. Fine or thick hair textures will work well.

How to Style:

  1. Begin with dry hair.
  2. Secure hair back and leave out a section to begin curling with a 1 and 1/4 inch curling iron. Spray each section with a light working spray.
  3. After all the hair is curled, if volume is desired in the crown area of the head, gently backcomb a few sections of hair.
  4. Take a few small sections of hair on either side of your face (or on one side only, whichever look is preferred) and secure each back with a bobby pin.
  5. Run your fingers through your hair for a softer look, and finish with a light hold hairspray.

Recommended Products:

To make your curls even softer and shinier, polish off the ends with a tiny bit of smoothing oil like Moroccan Oil. Use this very sparingly as it can easily become greasy!

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

This style will work well for an elongated face shape. Literally any hair type will work superbly for this style!

Tip:

This style is a stunner without each section being pinned perfectly. There doesn’t need to be any rhyme or reason to how you pin back the pieces of hair on either side.

#12 The Over The Top Braid Bombshell

Written by Carly Bowers

This style is without a doubt the easiest style of them all. It’s elegant, chic, and at the moment, this look is all the rage! Here’s my HUGE timesaving tip: the headband braid can be purchased! In order for the braid to look as full and thick as it does in the picture, you need extra long hair that is on the thick side. Not everyone has been blessed with extra long locks, so to create this look check out the braided headbands from the Ken Paves/Jessica Simpson’s line: HairDO.

How to Style:

  1. Start with dry smoothed out hair that is parted to the desired side.
  2. Put in the braided headband.

Recommended Products:

To get a nice sleek look for this style, apply a smoothing serum to your hair prior to blow drying. I love Biosilk.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

Any hair texture will work perfectly with this style and it will elongate a round face.

Tip:

It is definitely possible for some lucky ladies to create a thick braid with their own hair like the one shown here. However, save yourself the hassle and time of struggling to get that braid just right and pick up one of these headbands! Many brands make them and to my knowledge, most are under $20.

#13 The  Tendril Temptress

How to Style:

  1. Start with dry hair parted on the desired side.
  2. Secure hair back, leaving a section to begin curling with a 1 and 1/4 inch curling iron.
  3. Once all the hair has been curled, secure the hair back on one side of your head. This can be done by braiding the hair, twisting pieces, or simply securing small sections back with bobby pins.
  4. Spray everything with a finishing spray.

Recommended Products:

I like Moroccan Oil Light Hold Hairspray for curling, as well as for a finishing spray.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

This hairstyle will work great for someone looking to show off their stunning makeup or gorgeous earrings. A long, side swept fringe can soften your forehead.

#14 The Off-Set Sensation

Going for a little asymmetry at your prom this year? This simple sensation adds just a touch of flair to an ordinarily basic style!

How to Style:

  1. Start with dry hair.
  2. Begin by creating the section that you wish to be pulled back into the asymmetrical poof. It can be as small or as big as you would like.
  3. Secure the rest of your hair back while you focus on creating volume in the poof section.
  4. Begin to create volume by backcombing small subsections of the poof section. Be sure to spray hairspray at your roots to create hold and volume.
  5. When you have reached the desired height, unclip the rest of your hair and allow it to hang naturally.
  6. Secure the poof section back with bobby pins. In order to create the asymmetrical effect, be sure the poof is off to one side and not right in the middle.
  7. Finish with a strong hold hairspray.

Recommended Products:

For the ultimate backcombing base, I like to use What A Tease: Backcomb in a Bottle by Big Sexy Hair.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

This hairstyle will be extra simple for people with short hair because they have less hair to work with. It will give a rounder look to a square face shape.

#15 The Pinned Back Princess

This is another favorite of mine. It screams class and sophistication without being too over the top. It is also ridiculously simple, which is the main reason that I am such a fan of this look!

How to Style:

  1. Begin with smooth, dry hair that is parted to the desired side.
  2. Take a section of hair on either side and secure it back with a bobby pin.
  3. Spray everything with a light finishing spray.

Recommended Products:

I love Bumble and Bumble Shine spray for a lovely finish. I always recommend that my clients spray it in their hands and then smooth down their hair with their hands. Keep any shine spray on the ends only. This prevents your hair from looking oily at the roots!

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

This style would be great for any type. An oval or round face shape would be complemented by this style.

#16 The Tousled Tresses Look

Written by Carly Bowers

Here’s another style that I love because it doesn’t have to be too perfect. You will look stunning and put together, even though a few hairs may be out of place!  This style also happens to be appearing all over the runway and it’s a constant request in the salon.

Tousled Tresses Long Messy Easy Prom Hairstyles

How to Style:

  1. Start with dry hair, parted to the desired side.
  2. Secure hair back, leaving out a section to begin curling with a 1 and 1/2 inch curling iron. Spray each section with a light working spray before curling.
  3. When all hair has been curled, run your fingers through the curls to give them a looser, more relaxed look.
  4. Finish by spraying everything with a light hold hairspray.

Recommended Products:

I love L’oreal Infinium 4 Hairspray to finish a style with. It has a good amount of hold but doesn’t leave your hair feeling sticky.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

This style will work well for every hair type, but will soften the features of a rectangular or square face.

Hopefully these styles will give you a plethora of prom hair ideas. Whether you select a timeless classic look or something a little bit more funky and modern, your hairstyle can be the perfect match for a lovely dress and stunning accessories. And hopefully you’ve realized that just because it looks fancy doesn’t mean it has to take hours to do. Here’s to a prom where you turn every head in the room!
