Many people think that wavy hair is easy and simple to style because the texture helps shape the hair, but the style makes all the difference. I’ve had several clients with beautiful waves, yet they complain about them due to poor layering or incorrect weight placement. Seeing all that potential for beautiful hair go to waste is incredibly frustrating for me.
About five years ago I had a particularly memorable client. He came in wearing a baseball cap, and when I asked him why he was wearing it he told me he hated his hair. I was shocked with what I saw when he took it off. He had beautiful waves. All he needed was a cut that wouldn’t fight the waves and instead let the hair fall naturally. After manipulating some weight on the sides and leaving the top fuller than he was used to, I couldn’t keep him from looking in the mirror after application of some product and letting it dry. That’s the beauty of wavy hair; it’s not about forcing your hair into a certain shape, but releasing a natural pattern that is already there. I have a lot of thoughts about these styles.

#1: Shoulder-Length Waves That Actually Move the Way You Want
This hair cut will reward you if you hair has any natural waves since it allows curls to open and bounce without looking heavy or shapeless. The slight layers help ensure that by day 2, this haircut doesn’t just become one solid mass. This is the true test of a layered cut like this one. I would suggest to leave it alone after adding some sea salt spray while it’s still damp. The worst thing you could do with a cut like this is overthink it.

#2: That Soft, Undone Wave That Looks Like You Didn’t Try
I like this cut because it looks easy, but there is a clever cut beneath this. The layers keep the bulk so the waves sit lighter and airier instead of puffy. It especially works on rounder faces because the texture breaks the shape and gives you angles you didn’t know you had. If your hair usually falls flat by the afternoon, you would benefit from a lightweight mousse applied to your hair when it is damp. Guys with this wave pattern can towel dry their hair and it will look just like this after air drying.

#3: A Wavy Crop That’s Got Personality Up Front
The fringe is what gives this cut its uniqueness, because without the fringe you have a basic textured crop, however, the little bit of length falling forward shows a lot of direction. The low, soft fade on the sides makes sure it doesn’t compete with the texture on top, which is perfect. This is a cut I would love to do, because the balance between the fringe and the fade is where all the interesting decisions are, and getting that transition right is what I think about every time a client leaves, and I find myself wishing I’d done more.

#4: Easy Wavy Layers That Wear Well All Week
This type of haircut gets top marks in my book because my clients probably aren’t going to be restyling their hair everyday (even if they promise to me in the chair). I get that praise cuts are the ultimate goal, but I appreciate when I can create movement and flow with the top layers without a bunch of disjointed lengths, and with this style, you won’t lose that shape as it grows out for a while. There’s no need for a whole bunch of product with this style, a light cream might be good if you want a bit more definition, but the goal of this style is to not be fussy or overly done.

#5: Wavy Top with a Soft Undercut That Doesn’t Scream for Attention
I’m happy to see we’ve gone past that trend of extreme undercuts where the sides were shaved and the front hair could be over six inches long, flopping all over the place. What we have now is a much softer version that is far more manageable. The graduated look rather than a blunt disconnect, The wavy top has a more natural blend, instead of looking like two different haircuts on one head. The volume of this haircut will suit an oval face and give the appearance of elongating the head without the need to actually cut it.

#6: Faded Sides with Waves That Actually Pop
With the waves looking mean and that slick backdrop to show off, the clean fade and textured top create a sharp juxtaposition for this cut. In my opinion, for a look like this you would have to keep the reaps on the sides on a pretty tight schedule, every two to three weeks to keep the fade how you want it, and the top is better off with more hair as it will be more forgiving with all that hair till the next cut. I think this will be one of the easier haircuts to have on the list if you have medium naturally wavy hair that isn’t too fine or too thick.

#7: Long Wavy Layers for When You’ve Got the Length and the Patience
I’ll be honest; I do feel a bit happy when a customer comes in with long hair that’s been styled. A lot of guys grow it out and do nothing with it and it looks quite drab. When you put in the right investment for the right layers in the right places, the hair has room to fall in waves and there is movement throughout the entire length of the hair, not just at the ends. If you are growing your hair out and you are in a stage that is definitely awkward and you are finding it frustrating, don’t lose hope. Come in for a scheduled trimming every few months and you will get to your goal and it will be worth it.

#8: Curly Crop with Volume That Doesn’t Need Convincing
This sits right on the border between wavy and curly, which is my favorite texture to work with because you can push it in either direction depending on the day. You can scrunch it for more curl, or brush it out for a looser wave. The layers are doing a lot of the work here. Because each layer is spaced out enough to catch the light differently, it gives the whole style dimension without looking overly styled. For guys who have this kind of texture and have been cutting it too short their whole lives, growing it out to this length is usually a revelation — it’s like you suddenly realize your hair has all this character you never knew about.

#9: Shoulder-Length with Layers That Keep Things Light
One way this cut can go wrong is if the layered cutting is too subtle and it just hangs like cheap curtains. But this one was done right because the soft internal layers keep the weight evenly distributed so the waves can move freely and the ends won’t bunch up. It’s the kind of cut that looks really cute tucked behind one ear, and with sunnies on top of your head, I know that’s super specific but I promise it is a whole look. If you have finer hair, this length can sometimes feel a little sparse, so in that case I would recommend going shorter, an inch or two, to keep the hair looking full.

#10: Relaxed Waves with Texture You Can Feel
The first thing I notice with this haircut is how the texture looks from a distance. The varying waves would mean that this won’t look flat in person and in photos which is harder to achieve than most people think with this hair length. The volume is just right all the way from the crown to the top and the sides are just tidy enough that they still look intentional. For straight haired guys hoping to get this, I must say, even with texturizing spray, it won’t look as good and will look less natural than it does currently.

#11: Soft Waves with Smart Layering on Top
This piece with these warm tones has a wonderful color. It captures the light nicely and the detail in the waves is great. A lot of the guys color tweaking overlook it. The cut is also clean and nice. The longer layers on top are great for creating volume exactly where you want it. If you’re toying with the idea of adding some subtle highlights to enhance your waves, this is the right cut to do it because it’ll really show the depth and dimension of the highlights.

#12: Tapered Curls with That Fresh-Out-Of-the-Chair Energy
I can see some confidence in this hairstyle. Top curls with a taper on the back and sides are a combination that works great, I’ve never seen it look bad on anyone. Where some guys go wrong is getting this look on straight or only slightly wavy hair, and for this look, you need a nice curl pattern. If you have one, consider yourself fortunate because this is a cut that will get you a lot of compliments. The taper means you will have to go to the barber frequently, but you’ll be able to go a while without a cut on top.

#13: Wavy Crop with a Clean Fade That Frames Everything Right
The fade appears to be blending properly, allowing the top to be the focal point. I really wish more barbers showed this much restraint. The natural wave on top is well defined and I really wouldn’t guess that it took 20 minutes to do. For square jaws, this type of volume through the crown is well balanced and quite flattering. If you have thicker hair, this is a great option as the fade will help manage the bulk and the top is going to get to show off.

#14: Longer Layered Waves with a Lived-In Feel
Wavy hair usually shines at this length, just below the shoulders, as the wave gets pulled into long and lazy S-curves that can’t be achieved with shorter lengths. The layers are done smart here- just enough to keep it from looking heavy at the bottom. I think a lot of guys are scared to go this long, but if your hair has natural wave and enough density to support the length, this is one of the most flattering things you can do. It will soften your features and give you that effortless cool look that a short cut just won’t do.

#15: Short Wavy Crop That’s Actually Interesting
Short crops usually become boring to me fast, but I find this particular style engaging for a time. The curls on top have the right amount of volume to give the hair some shape. The taper on the sides is done with real precision. In this case, I feel the haircut is good enough to consider a style in itself. This cut is better on finer hair since, with the shorter length, individual strands build the volume rather than risking waste from being weighed down. I would recommend this type of cut to anybody wanting something easy, but not boring. In fact, I would go as far to say you could wake up and go without doing anything to great lengths, and the hair would still look good.

#16: Defined Waves Over a Subtle Fade
I think the wave definition on this haircut is nice because it balances both structure and naturalness really well. There may be some product, but it looks like there isn’t, which is the goal. The faded sides are high enough to let the top stand out the most. This type of haircut gives a good youthful energy without being too trendy and is somewhat easy to maintain. This look can be altered by humidity though. If you live in a tropical climate, get ready to become friends with a good anti-humidity spray. Some days the waves will do their own thing.

#17: Clean Wavy Crop with a Tight Fade
This is a classic barbershop cut but with nice wave texture added. What works for this cut is the even proportions, clean fade, and top length just right so everything is balanced and not too top heavy. This style creates the illusion of more volume than you actually have, which is a nice trick with medium density hair because of the way light bounces off the waves at different angles. This style can go from a day at the office to a night out easily. I know it may be a cliche to say about a cut, but in this case, I mean it. There is nothing about this style that looks too casual or too formal.

#18: Short Waves That Blend Into a Clean Fade
What I appreciate most with this particular cut is the transition zone between the waves and the fade. It is so smooth that the eye flows from one to another without breaks and that seamless appearance is what sets apart good fades from great fades. The waves are short enough on top that they are more suggestive than definitive, which gives this some maturity that some of the longer wavy styles lack. This is a style that nearly anyone can pull off but I think especially suited to guys with more defined features as the subtle texture lets the face do most of the talking.

#19: Curly Taper That Owns Its Texture
I enjoy it when a client sits down and I can see their curls. This shows me that I get to do a haircut that will show off the curls, not one where I have to make something up. The taper at the back is a detail a lot of guys miss and it finishes the whole cut off. It’s like the difference between a painting with a frame and one without. For this style if you get frizz easily a curl defining cream on wet hair will be your best friend. You just scrunch it in and let it air dry. The hardest part will be not to touch it.

#20: Curly Top with a Fade That Knows Its Place
The top texture is really dense and the curls are tight enough to keep their shape but loose enough to have movement which is a sweet spot not everyone’s natural pattern lands on so if that’s you, congrats, you’ve won the hair lottery. The fade is clean, contemporary, and cut low enough to really get that contrast with skin and curl which makes the style look really graphic and striking. Honestly I wouldn’t change a thing about this cut, it’s one of those where the technique and the natural hair just met each other perfectly.

#21: Mid-Length Waves That Work Everywhere
I suggest this versatility all the time because it shows off the wave pattern well while also not needing too much of a routine to deal with in the mornings. It gives a modern touch to the look. If you blow this smooth it would be a totally different and far less interesting haircut, and in fact it would likely detract from the overall so you should do the opposite and really lean into the texture; a light mousse should do the trick when towel dried. I have seen this style in corporate settings and at casual beach weddings, it just works.

#22: Textured Wavy Crop That Does a Lot with a Little
This is surprisingly interesting for a crop. The waves can show different appearances due to the way the layers are cut. This creates a feel that is looser and tighter providing more depth than a uniform cut. This looks like a smart choice for thicker hair because you manage the bulk and the texture. I think this hairstyle clearly shows the importance of having the right stylist for this cut. The layering needs to be this good to set the hairstyle apart and that takes someone who understands how the waves should fall because they often do not fall where they are supposed to look like they are falling when they are wet.

#23: Waves with Layers That Give Every Strand a Job
Each layer in this ‘do has a purpose and it all comes together beautifully. The shorter layers up top will give some volume while the longer layers add weight and swing to create a nice rhythm to the cut that moves with you. If your hair is medium to thick, this cut will be super full and lively but even on fine hair, it’ll look good. You just may not have as much volume. It will still look good, though, as the shape will be nice. If your hair is wavy, you probably deal with some frizz, and the layers will help with that by breaking up the surface area so there is less for humidity to grab onto.

#24: Wavy Cut with a Side Part That Feels Modern, Not Retro
Side parts can get old-fashioned pretty quickly, but this one seems to avoid that because the waves completely override any formality the part might suggest. As a result, combination feels structured, but relaxed at the same time, which I really like. The layering around the face is soft, and opens things up nicely along the jawline, which is a subtle detail, but makes a difference, especially in photos. This is a cut that benefits from being styled with fingers rather than a comb. Just push it into place while damp, and let the natural texture dry it in.

#25: Curly Undercut That Frames the Face Beautifully
I really love how the curls frame the face, adding amazing shape and direction. Most curly cut stylists just think of the hair as straight hair that happens to bend. The undercut gives contrast without detracting from the style, and the top being medium length means he can style it either forwards or backwards, which is good because the more options the better. Just know that with an undercut like that, the grow out period can get really awkward around week 5 or 6, so be strategic with your appointments and don’t let it go too long between cuts.
