Cloud Midi Cuts That Prove You Do Not Need Long Hair to Look Polished and Put-together

My neighbor’s daughter’s haircut stand out from all the other haircuts I’ve seen because she does not cut hair for a living. On an out-of-state trip, she visited her mom who had thinning hair that was past her shoulders. She took off about four inches, creating a clean cut with rounded layered framing that rounded off at the collarbone. For the whole afternoon, her mother was touching her hair in an astonished manner. Surprisingly, she was in her sixties and claimed it was the first time in a long time that she felt free and not burdened by something that she was clearly letting go.

This is what many people want, even if they don’t realize it, when asking for a cloud midi cut. Often, people say things like, ‘I want it shorter but not short,’ or ‘I want it to look full but feel light.’ It ends somewhere between the chin and just past the shoulders, and what sets it apart from a standard mid-length cut is the internal layering. It creates a softer, airier look that doesn’t rely on the bulk most people hair no longer have. This is a look meant for hair that is texture, either naturally or with a 1.25 inch curling iron and five minutes in the morning.

And it feels like good hair, honest and unpretentious, not aspirational or over-trying. It’s also suitable for women over sixty.

Auburn midi cut with curtain part and layered ends

#1: Auburn Glow with a Curtain Part

The auburn color really stands out against the warm sandstone background. The curtain bangs are opening up the forehead and are framing the eyes more than a center part would. The tips have that intentional and slightly flipped up quality. They suggest that the layers were cut with a razor, creating softer, more feathered movement, unlike shears which would create more contrast. It’s effortless elegance.

Dark espresso wavy midi cut with curtain layers

#2 Espresso Waves with Face-Framing Curtains

The cut looks sleek with the darker than usual espresso color as opposed to lighter shades that might look different. The curtain layers also add enough openness to keep them from feeling closed off. The interior of the hair still has movement and bend even though the color is quite dark, which means the layers are doing their job properly. Color, especially darker shades, can make hair look flat. Without layers that create shadow and light within the shape, everything can flatten into one surface like in the example.

Dark chocolate midi blowout with face-framing layers

#3 Dark Chocolate Blowout with Statement Earrings

Something about ending on this one feels right. Especially considering the blowout is classy and soft with the added dimension of highlighted curls. Plus, the rich dark chocolate color is gorgeous. A lot of my focus is on how the cut works with the earrings; the framing this cut gives is ideal for bold jewelry. If you wear statement pieces, consider a cloud midi at this length. It means the face framing layers will sweep back (not forward) and create a beautiful stage for your accessories, in a way that longer or shorter hair just doesn’t offer.

Dimensional ash blonde midi cut with full layers

#4 Dimensional Ash Blonde with Layered Volume

This blonde has incredible dimension. Working from the darker areas in the roots, to the lighter pieces in the face framing, there are at least three to four different tones blended together. The cut of the layers create the most amount of movement with the hair flipping and bending in different directions all while having an organized mess look to it. There is real fullness in the hair, the type of fullness to fine hair that makes it appear as if there is double the amount of hair, and that is due to the layering technique more than it is the product. The levels of volume in this hair is what you want to show your stylist if they ever ask you for a reference.

Espresso midi cut with caramel ribbon highlights

#5 Espresso Cloud with Caramel Ribbons

The caramel ribbons intertwining with the espresso base remind me of the way lightening dark hair happens naturally over time, and I love it! The color is so beautiful and does not look foiled or placed in any way. This looks like sun-kissed hair, which is incredibly difficult to achieve and stunning. The cut is full with interior layering that creates movement from the inside out. The side-swept framing pieces are long enough to tuck behind an ear when she wants them out of the way.

Chocolate brunette midi with flipped curtain layers

#6 Chocolate Brunette with Flipped Curtain Layers

It’s worth mentioning how great the satin rust blouse looks against this chocolate brunette because people don’t realize how much their hair color interacts with different pieces in their wardrobe. The curtain layers flip gently outwards around the jawline which opens up the entire lower half of the face and the highlights are so subtle that they almost act as dimension rather than as a separate color. It is a refined, sophisticated, effortless look that says “I know what I like,” and there’s no need for any further persuasion.

Honey blonde midi cut with bouncy blow-dried layers

#7 Honey Blonde Layered Blow-Dry

There’s a comfort in this style that surpasses the beautiful color. Honey blonde is stunning, of course, but the bounce and outward movement of the layers has that generous, slightly retro feel every good blowout with a large round brush creates. The overall shape is full and buoyant, yet not overstyled. Leaving the roots a little more dark is a great way to give the blonde a more natural, grown-in look, which is easier to maintain than an all-over platinum. This is a great example of how the cloud midi can feel both classic and current.

Warm copper wavy midi cut with lived-in texture

#8 Warm Copper Midi with Lived-In Texture

The unique quality of this one is the texture. It’s not completely wavy or straight, instead, it’s in the middle. There’s some light bending and memory of movement, not fully curled. The warm copper shade illuminates from the window behind her and almost glows at the ends, while the roots keep deeper and more steady. This exemplifies second day hair at its ultimate peak, and it is the kind of hairstyle that can be achieved with a couple of sprays of dry texture spray and your fingers.

Chocolate brunette midi cut with sleek side part

#9 Chocolate Brunette with Sleek Side Part

I love the calmness of this style. The chocolate brunette shade is rich but not overly flashy, the quiet layers don’t draw the eyes, and the side part adds a bit of asymmetrical intrigue without being overbearing. I consider this cut to be a style that will look good at nine in the morning and nine at night without needing to be touched up in between, which is honestly what most people want from their hair.

Deep auburn midi cut with voluminous curtain layers

#10 Deep Auburn Curtain Layers with Body

The multi-dimensional richness of this auburn is easy to see from across the room. It is a deep, wine-tinged brown with glimmering coppers that runs through it and catches all the light. The layering is massive starting at the cheekbones and cascading outwards to a body that has either a lot of naturally thick hair or a very good blowout. It looks stunning against the black top and the color really pops. If you’re thinking of going darker instead of lighter as your hair changes, this is what it looks like done well.

Strawberry copper midi bob with soft curtain fringe

#11 Strawberry Copper Bob with Soft Curtain Fringe

This haircut is just under the chin and features a light curtain fringe that can be pushed to the side if you want it out of your face. The warm strawberry copper shade is a flattering color for freckled skin. The ends turning under gives a softness to the bob and is updated with texture and framing. The cut is a little brave without the need to be.

Mushroom brunette midi cut with feathered layers

#12 Mushroom Brunette with Feathered Movement

The color on this one is what some colorists call mushroom brunette. An ashy brown that sits somewhere between warm and cool and manages to look great for it. It’s a color that very suits women whose natural hair is beginning to go gray as the tone sits in that in-between area. The feathered layers delicately fan out at the ends and give a soft and airy shape that is the spitting image of what the cloud midi is meant to be.

Cool ash blonde midi cut with polished flipped layers

#13 Cool Ash Blonde with Polished Layers

This cloud midi is top-tier. This design would be on a news anchor or a classy lady at a gallery opening. The ashy blonde is so cool, very well-kept, no brassy tones and a smooth silky feel, that comes from either great genetics or a very good purple shampoo. The outward flips in the layers and all the shaping is clean and not too rigid. It is the perfect haircut for people to assume you have your life together.

Caramel highlighted midi cut with swooped side bangs

#14 Caramel Highlighted Cloud with Swooped Bangs

These swooped bangs are so lovely. They are not quite curtain bangs and not really side swept bangs, they are some mix of the two, falling diagonal over the forehead and merging into the face framing layers. The caramel highlights are where the light naturally hits the face, and the top layers around the face so it makes the whole haircut look warm and sunny. For someone who wants a little more personality in the front, this is a very wearable style of the cloud midi.

Before and after cloud midi cut with caramel highlights

#15 Warm Brunette Bounce with Caramel Ends

The before and after photos show her transformation perfectly. In the left photo, the length is doing nothing for her, just hanging there, weighing everything down. In contrast, the right photo shows the same length of hair looking so much lighter and giving her face an even better look. The light brown highlights at the ends create a brighter look and the light waves look much better. It finally looks like her hair is living up to its potential. If you have thick hair and are keeping your length out of habit, you will definitely want to take note of this.

Sandy blonde feathered midi cut with flipped layers

#16 Sandy Blonde Feathered Flip

This style has a retro vibe that I really love. The layers that move away from and toward the face, and the flipping at the ends speak to the best late seventies styles but don’t feel costumy. The sandy blonde color keeps the style modern. The layering starts high enough to give good movement at the sides. It would also look beautiful pulled back on one side with a simple clip.

Brunette midi cut with wispy bangs and soft layers

#17 Soft Brunette Layers with Wispy Bangs

The bangs on this style are gently diffused and almost disappear into the face framing strands, which is what works best for someone who is apprehensive about going for a full fringe. They rest delicately on the forehead, thin enough to show the brows, and integrate completely into the surrounding layers. The warm brunette shade has some golden highlights woven throughout to keep it from being too dense, and the overall shape is soft, round and flattering in an explained type of way.

Wavy blonde midi cut with dark root shadow

#18 Undone Blonde Waves with Root Shadow

The dark root shadow has two benefits; it gives the blonde some dimension and it extends the time between color appointments, which is more important than most stylists will admit. The waves are beautifully textured and uneven in the best way. Think of the type of waves you get from spraying a sea salt texturizing spray in your hair while it’s damp and letting it air dry. The whole look feels youthful while not trying to look young, which is important.

Warm chestnut midi blowout with flipped ends

#19 Warm Chestnut Blowout with Flipped Ends

The ends here flip outwards and round just like a round boar bristle brush would do when you blow dry, and it gives the entire cut a clean and full look without being stiff or over done. The warm chestnut color is rich and reflects the light beautifully, while the layers in the front are just right to frame your face without cutting through the cheeks. This is one of the more styled versions of the cloud midi which is for people who enjoy the process of doing their hair.

Cool brunette textured midi shag with movement

#20 Cool Brunette Textured Shag

This cut is a modern shag, with choppy ends and layers that kick out instead of curl. This look is best slightly messy, and after years of trying to get your hair to look perfect, that’s a liberating prospect. The color is an ashy and cool brunette, very on trend. This look is definitely effortless, in a way that either is or it isn’t, and this definitely is.

Natural curly midi cut with warm brown highlights

#21 Natural Curl Cloud at Shoulder Length

If you have curly hair, this version of the cloud mid coat will most likely suit you best. The layers are designed to allow curls to spring and not be forced into a silhouette that they don’t want to hold. The warm caramel pieces throughout the mids add dimension without disrupting the curl pattern. This type of haircut does take a stylist who knows how to cut curly hair dry, as the form can change significantly once it is dry. Cutting it wet is just a guess.

Dark chocolate wavy midi cut with fine highlights

#22 Dark Chocolate Waves with a Subtle Highlight

When you look at these highlights, they aren’t bold enough so they almost don’t look like highlights. Instead, you see the hair and the depth along with the movement that single-process color wouldn’t give you. The hair looks relaxed even though the cut is precise. The waves are complementary and show that the look is relaxed. Sometimes the best polished cloud midi looks like it took no effort at all.

Honey bronde midi cut with voluminous curls

#23 Honey Bronde Curls with Volume at the Crown

I am not sure what it is exactly, but it makes me happy. The honey bronde color here has a beautiful warm reflective quality and the curls are so generous and full, but not overwrought. The crown volume is essential for women over sixty whose hair has started to flatten at the roots, and these layers are so well stacked that she can have lift without having to backcomb or put a lot of product in. A volumizing root spray and a round brush blow dry would get you very close!

Cinnamon copper layered midi cut styled in salon

#24 Cinnamon Copper at the Salon Chair

This color does a lot of the work here. This is a true cinnamon copper – not red or too brown, just the right shade. The cut is fairly simple – a collarbone-length midi with face-framing layers that bend away from the cheeks. But, with that copper, it reads as being very thoughtful. A color depositing conditioner in copper will help you keep the richness until your next appointment.

Champagne blonde wavy midi cut with deep side part

#25 Champagne Blonde with a Deep Side Sweep

The first striking feature is the amazing asymmetry created by the deep side part. The hair is swooping over the forehead and the weight is all on one side. The blonde is sophisticated with an ashy, champagne quality that is not cool toned enough to wash someone out. The mid lengths have texture which keeps it from being overly polished and that is what is needed with a cloud midi. It should have that little bit of undone look.
