What Happens When Women Over 60 Add Bangs to a Layered Cut and Commit to It

A client’s most telling response is often given without words. It is the image they pull up on their phone. What has been most common lately among women over 50? Instead of one specific celebrity example or Pinterest-perfect style, I have noticed a change. More and more, I see dissimilar photos being brought in to show the same foundational structure. They may have completely different styles, but all have layers and bangs. They can be chin length or span to the shoulders, with anything from full fringe to wispy, and much more movement. Regardless of the details, the structure remains the same.

It’s fascinating how the conversation around adding layers and bangs to their hair has changed in this demographic. I remember when clients used to come in so timid and apologetic for wanting to get bangs over 50, like there was some rule against it. That’s disappeared, and not because someone told them it was okay. It changed organically, one good haircut at a time, spread word of mouth amongst friends, coworkers, even strangers in line at the grocery store. I had a client last month who said she had been complimented on her layered cut by someone in a parking garage, and that woman went on to give a very technical detailed description of what she liked from her cut, unlike what I get from most of my newer clients. Five years ago people were so less interested in hair cuts and how the hair moved. But now, people are requesting certain hair cuts that give me so much more motivation and excitement to work with them.
