Little Girl Haircuts to Match Their Personality

Finding the right haircut for your little girls and their personalities can be very important. Parents know how their kids are and if a more chic haircut or a sporty one would be more fitting. Most little girls can pull of short pixie haircuts and they are easy to style for school. Some girls prefer a little longer length and medium layers and bob haircuts are idea options. Bobs are always trendy and for younger girls blunt bobs might be a better match. For older girls, adding layers and razor cutting can add that updated touch. For girls wanting to keep longer locks, again layers help keep dullness away and there are tons of braiding options. The key is to find a haircut your daughters will love to wear all day long and for any places they go from school to an event with their friends.

Little Girls Long Layered Hair

Q&A with style creator, Claudia Castillo
Stylist / Colorist @ Cooper and Strop Hair Parlor in Victorville, CA

How would you describe this look?

This is a long layered cut. My favorite thing about it how the long layers add volume and hair becomes more flexible when styling it. This makes it easier to hold curls or blend more smoothly when straightened with a flat iron.

Any advice for someone considering it?

It’s a good idea to always use a leave-in conditioner when you have extra long length. This will keep the hair hydrated and also prevent the hair from breaking.

Stacked Bob Haircut

Q&A with style creator, Jessica Garnica
Hairdresser @ TONI&GUY The Galleria in Houston, TX

How would you describe this look?

This look is a stacked bob. My favorite thing about it is that it’s super easy to style and creates lots of volume. For clients with fine hair, it gives the illusion of thicker hair. It is a trendy kids hairstyles for all ages! If you are looking for haircuts for little girls, bobs are always an option for cuteness and ease of styling.

Any advice for someone considering it?

To blow dry, I recommend using the Catwalk Bodifying Spray or Catwalk Salt Spray at the crown area to give additional volume. This look is good for most hair types, but requires some styling to get the best out of it! If your hair is curly and coarse, it will require more time to smooth out. I like to use the S Factor Molding Wax to give the hair flexible hold, shine, texture, and definition.

Clients with oblong, oval, diamond, and heart shaped faces will look best with this cut because the length accentuates high cheekbones. A client with a round/short face may appear to have bigger cheeks!

Little Love

Q&A with style creator, Melanie Brown
Hairstylist @ Salon on the Ave in Provo, UT

How would you describe this look?

This is a perfect style for anyone wanting to add a little “love” into their style. My favorite thing about this is how subtle, soft, and simple it is.

Any advice for someone considering it?

I found curled hair worked well for us to make this style last through recesses and Valentine’s parties, but straight would also be beautiful.

Take a section of hair from each side and secure with an elastic. Then take another section of hair from each side and weave it under the previously secured pieces and under the new section, making a heart. Secure with another elastic and fan out the heart as needed for shape.

Unicorn Ombre Hairstyle

Q&A with style creator, Amber Glasgow
Vivid Color Specialist / Hairstylist @ Instyle Studio in Lafayette, IN

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as a unicorn ombre color. My favorite thing about this look is the transition from the purple to the pink. Plus, as the color fades it will still look awesome!

Any advice for someone considering it?

This is a high maintenance look, so if you do not want to keep up with your color every four to five weeks, I would stick to coloring just the underneath of the hair.

There great shampoos now that have color in them (like Viral Shampoo) so when the color starts to fade, you can freshen it up at home.

Manageable Bob

Manageable Bob hairstyle
Instagram @jilly_may

Q&A with style creator, Jill Plunkett
Senior Hairstylist @ First Impressions in Fort Wayne, IN

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as a classic bob with a slight angle in the front to keep it stylish and trendy for a girl her age. The thing I love about this look is how easy it is for her to style. Bob haircuts are great for little girls because they are cute and easy to style.

Any advice for someone considering it?

We cut off about 12 inches because she has super thick hair and she had a hard time even getting shampoo out of it. A cut like this is great for a girl her age because she can blow dry and go, or air dry if she has straight or wavy hair.

We took out most of her bulk through the interior with the razor so it lays beautifully without being too thick for the length. This is a great look for someone with thick, straight, or wavy hair. A great cut will style itself and most young girls are in need of a style they won’t have to fuss with. Clients are often scared of the razor because they think it will look harsh and choppy. If done properly, it gives a really beautiful, soft, light, and airy look with tons of movement.

I used Aveda’s Style Prep Smoother before blow drying for a heat protection and to keep the hair smooth while blow drying. Her hair is pretty straight, so I didn’t have to use a flat iron. I finished by using Aveda’s Light Elements Smoothing Fluid for a shiny, polished finish.

Manageable Long Layers

Q&A with style creator, Claudia Castillo
Stylist / Colorist @ Cooper and Strop Hair Parlor in Victorville, CA

How would you describe this look?

This is a long layered haircut. I added long layers to create shape and to make it more manageable.

My favorite thing about haircuts like this one is how they reduce the weight of thicker hair. The curls will also hold better, and the layers add volume while still having the length to play with.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Anyone can pull off this look and it goes well with all face shapes. If you’re trying to change your look but want to keep your length, this is the style for you. Long layered hair looks amazing and glamorous!

Long Layered Cut with a Soft Wavy Curl

Long Layered Cut with a Soft Wavy Curl hairstyle
Instagram @cassiecurl

Q&A with style creator, Cassandra Hernandez
Stylist @ Dean Allyn Salon in Fort Worth, TX

How would you describe this look?

This look is a long layered haircut with a soft wavy curl. My favorite thing about it is how beautifully it showcases her adorable little face!

Any advice for someone considering it?

Since she is only three years old, obviously she is not going to be styling her own hair, but I wanted to make it easy to manage for her mom. She has a natural curl, so on most days, she can use a product like Aquage Defining Gel to scrunch the hair and let it air dry.

On special days, she can blow dry and curl the hair like I did. I sprayed each section with Aquage Working Spray, curled with a 1 1/2-inch iron, and shook the curls loose. Kids hairstyles like this one will be pretty either way!

Waterfall Braid Pigtails

Q&A with style creator, Melanie Brown
Hairstylist @ Salon on the Ave in Provo, UT

How would you describe this look?

These are waterfall braid pigtails. My girls (I have three!) love pigtails and I get so bored with them, so this was my way of making them more interesting. Kid win, Mom win!

Any advice for someone considering it?

To create this style, I sectioned the waterfall rectangle and clipped it out of the way. I then parted the remaining hair into pigtails and secured them with a clear elastic. I went back to the rectangle I sectioned off and French braided it, leaving a section out on each side to give it that waterfall braid look. I never leave the entire third section of the braid out, just a piece so that it stays in better.

I find braided hairstyles are easier with damp hair and a little hairspray (I love Biolage Finishing Spritz). I finished the look by smoothing the pieces left out from the waterfall braid with a little water and hairspray and secured each with another clear elastic.

Evening Pony Style

Evening Pony Style hairstyle
Instagram @hairbyhenchy

Q&A with style creator, Henchy Indig
Hairstylist & Colorist @ Capelli Hair Salon in Brooklyn, NY

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this as an evening pony style. My favorite part is the subtle braid that gives it an extra “something”.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I used shine cream to define the curls while creating the style, and finished it off with a strong hairspray to keep it in place.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look can be for any type of client. I can be used for going out or just jazzing up an everyday look.

Cute Bob With Bangs

Q&A with style creator, Claudia Castillo
Stylist / Colorist @ Cooper and Strop Hair Parlor in Victorville, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a classic bob. It’s perfect for little girls because it’s so versatile. You can add a nice clip, make two ponytails, or just wear it down and it will be stylish and easy to manage no matter what. I added bangs for this beauty which made it even cuter.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

The only product I used and always recommend when dealing with little girls is a good leave-in conditioner. I used Enjoy Conditioning Spray to untangle her hair and make it shiny and manageable.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend these type of haircuts for girls with fine hair. It makes the hair look fuller and voluminous, plus it’s a classic. You can’t go wrong with this style!

Zig-Zag Dutch Braid

Q&A with style creator, Irene Erasmus
Owner / Stylist @ Fairytale Braids in Gauteng, South Africa

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

The style consists of a single zig-zag Dutch braid that is slightly structured to give a thicker, fuller look on the head. I love the uniqueness of the style and how it complements the model from the front and back simultaneously with a braid visible on the top then flowing down the back of the neck and ending in a beautiful long braid over the shoulder.

The style can be amended to end in a ponytail from the neck down which can be curled or braided in a different braiding technique. My favorite thing is the versatility of the style and that it can be done as a tight braid for the young at heart or active person which will last the whole day (or two or three). It can also be done as a thick romantic style for any occasion.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

A good bottle of hairspray and a few elastic bands will do the trick. I find that braiding on squeaky clean hair works best for me.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

In my salon I work mostly with girls ages three and up, but I have found that braided hairstyles, in general, are becoming more popular. I hope it stays that way! Braided styles are for everyone. There are plenty of braided hairstyles for girls.

French Braid Updo

Q&A with style creator, Rachelle Edrozo
Special Event & Wedding Hair Stylist @ Alante Hair Design in El Cajon, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as the perfect updo for anyone, especially if you want your hair to stay in place all day. A French braid in the bang area helps keep the hair out of their face.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I used Diamond Oil by Redken and Enjoy Leave-In conditioner. I use them as a cocktail to brush out my client’s hair if there are any tangles. I love to use the Diamond Oil to help eliminate frizz or flyways.

Last, I used bobby pins on the cute messy bun and Hard Head Hairspray to keep it in place. The messy bun is great for kids.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

On a hot summer day, this quick little bun updo always wins! If you have blonde hair, it definitely looks the best with lots of highlights. Even if you like to have bangs, this look can be recreated by leaving the bangs out and French braiding directly behind the bangs.

hairstyles for little girls
Style by Victoria Mines

How To Style:

  1. Start with clean dry hair and part to the side.
  2. Section up most of your hair so a small area of hair by the neck is dropped down.
  3. Use 1½-inch curling iron or slightly larger to just grab and flip out the tips of the hair.
  4. Continue dropping down hair sections and repeat the process of flipping out the ends.
  5. When hair is completely flipped grab a small one-inch by one-inch section of hair up at the part line and braid it down. Secure with a clear elastic tie.
  6. Add one or two more braids if you wish and accessorize as you please.

Recommended Products:

Use a light hold hairspray like Fekkai Sheer Hold Hair Spray. It has a featherweight feel and also helps to add some shine.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

The side part and longer layers make this a great option for all face shapes. Curlier haired girls will have a harder time recreating this look on their own, but straight to wavy textures will work wonderfully with any thickness.

Tip:

Some moms will say no to coloring for girls who are so young. If you have a relentless asking child, highlights are a great way to compromise. Keep the color just a few shades lighter for a nice and natural look that will make you both happy.

Sweetheart Susie

I love this sweet and simple updo. It’s the small details in this hairstyle that make it special. The twisted back bangs, the tousled ponytail, and the chic headband make this little girl hairstyle simply stunning.

How To Style:

  1. Take about a two inch-wide triangle section of hair on the top of the center of the head in the front and backcomb it slightly.
  2. Smooth the section back, twist it, then secure with a bobby pin on the top of the head.
  3. Pull all of the hair up into a ponytail just under the crown of the head.
  4. Hairspray the ponytail and backcomb slightly to add some wispy and gritty texture.
  5. Twist and pin some pieces of the ponytail to the head for a fun, shattered shape.
  6. Top it off with a cute headband or ribbon and you’re done!

Recommended Products:

Start with a great foundation in the shower. I love L’Oreal Paris Kids 2-in-1 Shampoo. It comes in a few fun scents and works great. Kids love it!

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

All little girls can pull this look off. Just make sure that she has long enough hair to pull it up.

Tip:

Don’t tie your little girl’s hair up every day or you could cause breakage on her fine hair.

Ballerina Bella

Only a tiny ballerina could pull off twisted buns on top of the head with huge white bows. Buns are an awesome way to bring up the sophistication of pigtails. They’re also a fabulous way to keep hair up and out of your child’s eyes and face. This sweet style would be perfect for a birthday party, church or other special occasion.

How To Style:

  1. To keep the look more soft and natural, use your fingers to part hair into two sections right down the middle of the head from front to back.
  2. Gather the hair up and into two elastics so you have two high ponytails.
  3. Spray the ponytail hair with some hairspray and then twist them tightly.
  4. Spiral the twists down and around the hair tie and secure with bobby pins.
  5. Spray the whole head with strong hold hairspray for add security.
  6. Accessorize with your favorite colored ribbons!

Recommended Products:

I love Goody’s Ouchless Mini Elastics in clear because they work great and won’t snag hair. The clear color is perfect for any hair color and won’t clash with any colored ribbon either. Also check out their bobby pins for ultimate security when pinning. Opt for a strong hold hairspray like Big Sexy Hair’s Spray and Stay when you have completed your look.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

Girls will need longer hair to be able to achieve the higher buns. Any type of texture or face shape would work great with this hairstyle.

Tip:

When securing the buns with bobbies, push the pins in sideways towards the center of the hair tie, not into the head. The result will be more secure and you also won’t hurt your little ballerina’s head.

Cute Caitlin

Who remembers having blunt bangs as a child? This timeless style is super cute on kids who want to add a little framing to their face. These classic bangs are kept in a thickness proportional to the amount of overall hair. They are also rounded out slightly towards the temples to make them appear soft.

hairstyle for little girl with bangs

How To Style:

  1. Spray a good detangling spray on towel dried hair.
  2. Comb out any tangles and comb bangs straight down. Let hair air dry or use a blow dryer to remove moisture.

Recommended Products:

Grab Paul Mitchell’s Lite Detangler spray for out of the shower combing time. The spray is super lightweight and also nourishes and conditions the hair as it’s absorbed. You can also spray it on dry hair when you’re in a pinch.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

Bangs look great on round, pear, and some heart shaped faces. Girls with curly hair will not be able to have short bangs around their face, so make sure your daughter has pretty straight hair that will lay down nicely. If your daughter has crazy cowlicks in the front you may not be able to get them to lay down, so always consult with a professional when cutting hair.

Tip:

Bangs are a great idea for girls who have a ton of hair and like to wear it down all the time. Instead of watching them struggle trying to put hair behind their ears all the time, chop in some bangs for a light and easy feel.

Beautiful Bailey

Do bobs get any more adorable than this? Chin length bob haircuts are to die for on little girls and this particular version is no exception. Side parts are perfect for this age. The style also and lends itself to sweet side clips and barrettes. Keep hair off your daughter’s face by doing two small French braids that are secured in the back for a delightful hairstyle.

chin length little girls hairstyles

How To Style:

  1. Start with clean dry hair that is tangle free. Use a wide toothed comb or a paddle brush to detangle easier.
  2. Grab a section of hair on the top of the head to either side of the part and French braid a diagonal section towards the ear.
  3. When you reach just behind the ear, secure with an elastic.
  4. Repeat on the opposite side of the part.

Recommended Products:

Healthy Sexy Hair’s Tri-Wheat Leave-In Conditioner Spray is awesome at detangling and hydrating hair. Apply a few sprays of the fine mist on hair out of the shower and comb through.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

This side-parted bob would look great on round, heart or square shaped faces. Thin to thick hair can achieve this style and add texture, too. Curly bobs are my absolute favorite on little girls!

Tip:

Fine toothed combs will snag and pull more, so always opt for one with wider spaced teeth. It will make the brushing a lot gentler for her and easier for you.

Ponytail Paige

Nothing is sweeter than your daughter’s beautiful face! Show it off by pulling hair up and out of her eyes and back into a fashion forward ponytail. Adding a section of hair at time to the ponytail creates a fun, caterpillar-like effect and is played up with colorful coordinating hair ties. This look is super cute for short or long hair and also great for all occasions.

ponytail for little girls

How To Style:

  1. Take a small square section of hair on the top of the head and secure it with a hair tie about one to two inches away from the front hairline. Leave the hair from the crown and down out of the ponytails.
  2. Grab another square section of hair to the right of the section you just tied and include the hair from the first ponytail into another secured elastic.
  3. Continue adding more sections until you have a row of about three to five hair tied sections. It should look kind of like a connected train.
  4. When hair is back behind the ear, grab all the remaining hair that was left down and pull it over to secure as the last ponytail.

Recommended Products:

If you are worried about flyaways or pieces falling out, you can choose to use a hairspray like JoiMist Medium Hairspray by Bel Air Beauty Joico.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

Ponytails look great on everyone. If your child’s hair is too thin or fine it may not be able to create all of the sections, so medium to thicker hair is best.

Tip:

This style is great for young girls who have lots of layers in their hair because the small, secured sections will keep the layers from falling out.

Hip Hayley

Here’s another fun take on the classic pigtail hairstyle. Leave hair down and only tie up the top two sections for a fabulous and full look. It’s a great hairstyle to get hair back and away from the face and still look sweet and chic. Use girly scrunchies or elastics and colorful ribbons to secure.

little girls wispy ponytail

How To Style:

  1. Start with clean dry hair.
  2. Use a comb to part hair down the middle, starting at the forehead and stopping about four inches back by the crown.
  3. Continue the section down behind the ear and gather that whole section of hair up into a ponytail.
  4. Secure the section with an elastic tie and repeat on the opposite side so you have two ponytails on top of the head.
  5. Use a ribbon or colored scrunchie on top of the elastic to add a fun pop.

Recommended Products:

Use some Gold Glimmer Shine Spray by Moroccan Oil on dry hair for a healthy glossy glow. Emi Jay Hair Ties are an excellent ribbon-like elastic hair tie that secures hair, but won’t leave ponytail kinks in the hair when taken out. They are perfect for all ages!

Tip:

Braid the ponytails for an added touch of interest.

Lovely Lucy

Incorporate your braiding skills into this beautiful side ponytail. The braided texture, soft sweeping part and girly accents all work together for a gorgeous overall look. Grab some ribbon to tie off the ponytail and you’re good to go!

little girls long brown braids hairstyle
Style Brianna Linert, Casal Aveda Institute, Youngstown, PA

How To Style:

  1. Start with clean dry hair that has been parted to the side.
  2. Starting at the front part, pull a medium-sized section of hair back and French braid it back at an angle to the opposite ear.
  3. When you reach the back area of hair behind the ear with your braid, gather up ALL remaining hair and secure it low to the neck into a ponytail.
  4. Add a ribbon for glitz!

Recommended Products:

Use a flexible hold hairspray like Alterna’s Caviar Hairspay on hair before you braid to add a little grit to your strands and make it stay in place a little easier.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

All face shapes can rock a side pony with a braid. Yay! Medium to thick hair is best and straight to curly hair types will work with this hairstyle.

Tip:

Short bangs won’t work too well with this loose side braid. The short pieces may stick out and look silly.
