Okay so can we talk about wavy shags for a second? Because I feel like this cut has been quietly having its MOMENT with my clients over 60 and honestly I’m here for every single one of them. There’s something about the way a shag works with natural texture instead of fighting it that just makes my heart happy. I had a client last month, she’d been getting the same blowout-dependent bob for like fifteen years, and when I finally talked her into a wavy shag she literally teared up in the chair because she said it was the first time her hair looked like HER in years. That’s the thing nobody tells you about this cut, it doesn’t try to make your hair into something it’s not, it just lets your waves and texture do their thing but like, BETTER.
And the range you can get with a wavy shag is honestly wild. I’ve done them super choppy and rock-and-roll, I’ve done them soft and romantic, I’ve done them with bold color and with gorgeous natural silver and every single version has its own personality. Whether your hair is fine and needs that illusion of fullness or thick and needs some weight taken out so it actually moves, there’s a wavy shag that’s going to work for you. So let me walk you through some of my favorites because I have a LOT of feelings about these looks.

#1: Tousled Layered Bob with Soft Texture
Okay I LOVE a good tousled bob situation like this and here’s why, it gives you that effortless “I just look this good naturally” vibe without actually being hard to pull off. The waves here are soft and loose, not overly styled, which is exactly what makes it feel so modern. And those layers are doing some serious heavy lifting when it comes to making finer hair look like there’s more of it. The little wispy bangs are such a nice touch too, they keep everything feeling youthful without being in-your-face about it. You could honestly scrunch in some sea salt spray and let this air dry on a good hair day and still look completely put together.

#2 Long Wavy Layers with Rich Auburn Color
Can we just appreciate how GORGEOUS this auburn color is with those long wavy layers? Because I am staring. That warmth in the color is doing everything for her complexion, it’s like an instant brightener and I wish more of my clients were brave enough to try it. The layers here are long and flowing which gives you tons of styling options, you can wear it down, pull half of it up, throw it in a loose braid, whatever you’re feeling. I will say that keeping longer hair looking this healthy and vibrant does take a little more commitment, but if you’re someone who actually enjoys your hair routine rather than dreading it, this is SO worth it.

#3 Bouncy Purple Wavy Shag with Defined Layers
OKAY the purple! I wasn’t expecting to love this as much as I do but the combination of that vibrant violet with the bouncy layered texture is giving me life. This is for the client who walks in and says “I want something FUN” and actually means it. The layers here are really well placed to create movement without making the hair look thin, which can be tricky with medium density hair. Now I’m going to be honest with you, a fashion color like this means you’re going to become very familiar with your colorist’s schedule because keeping purple this saturated takes regular maintenance. But if you’re the kind of person who loves a bold statement? Do it. Don’t even hesitate.

#4 Relaxed Wavy Texture with Light Layers
This is one of those cuts that looks SO simple but is actually really well thought out, and that’s what I love about it. The waves are relaxed and natural looking, nothing fussy, and the layers are light enough that they add body without making fine hair look stringy at the ends, which is always my concern. It’s the kind of cut where you can wash it, add a little lightweight mousse, scrunch, and go about your day. The shoulder length is also really forgiving because it works whether you’re wearing a crew neck sweater or a V-neck blouse, it just kind of falls right.

#5 Airy Wavy Shag with Face-Framing Pieces
The face-framing pieces on this one are doing ALL the work and I am obsessed. See how they sort of sweep around the cheekbones and jawline? That’s not an accident, that’s a really intentional cut and it makes such a difference. The rest of the hair has this lovely natural wave that gives it an airy, lived-in quality that I personally think is the most flattering texture for a shag. It’s not trying too hard, it’s just easy and pretty. If your hair naturally has even a little bit of wave to it, this is the kind of cut that’s going to make your morning routine feel almost suspiciously simple.

#6 Layered Wavy Shag with Subtle Balayage
Okay the balayage on this one is what I’d call “perfectly imperfect” because it’s not stripey or obvious, it just looks like your hair naturally has these gorgeous light and dark variations running through it. And THAT is what good balayage should look like, not like you just came from the salon but like you’ve always just had really interesting hair. The shag cut itself has great movement from the layers and the length is right in that sweet spot where it’s long enough to pull back but short enough that it doesn’t drag everything down. Really lovely for anyone who wants to look polished without spending forty minutes with a round brush every morning.

#7 Copper Wavy Shag with Cheekbone-Framing Bangs
I am such a sucker for a warm copper tone and this one paired with those cheekbone-framing bangs? Stunning. The bangs here aren’t heavy or blunt, they’re soft and piece-y which keeps the whole look from feeling too “done” if you know what I mean. And that copper is just radiating warmth, it’s the kind of color that makes people say “you look amazing, did you do something different?” without being able to pinpoint exactly what changed. I will give you the real talk though, bangs like these need a trim every 3 to 4 weeks or they start doing their own thing, and in humid weather you might want to keep a mini anti-frizz serum in your bag.

#8 Chocolate Brown Wavy Shag with Soft Bangs
There’s something about a rich chocolate brown that just feels LUXURIOUS to me, and on a wavy shag like this it gives the hair so much depth. You can really see how the color plays off the texture, the waves catch light differently depending on the angle and it creates this beautiful dimensional effect that a flat color just can’t do. The soft bangs here are really approachable too, they’re not committing you to a full heavy fringe, they’re more of a “let me just soften things up around your forehead” situation. This whole look has a really modern energy to it while still being totally wearable for everyday life.

#9 Warm Copper Shag with Mid-Length Layers
That copper tone is WARM warm, like autumn leaves and caramel and I am into it. What I really want you to notice here though is how the front layers are cut to fall right around the face in a way that adds dimension, it’s almost like built-in contouring but with hair. The waves give it energy and keep it from looking flat or boring, which is always a risk with mid-length cuts if they’re not layered properly. This is a great example of a cut where the color and the shape are really working together as a team, neither one is carrying the other, they’re both pulling their weight.

#10 Gentle Layered Wavy Shag with Soft Highlights
The highlights on this one are SO subtle and that’s exactly why they work so well. They’re placed to catch the light where it naturally hits your face, which gives the whole look this lit-from-within quality that I just can’t get enough of. The gentle layers create movement without being choppy, so it reads as soft and feminine, which is beautiful if that’s the energy you’re going for. The loose waves here could easily be achieved with a large barrel curling iron or honestly just some scrunching on naturally wavy hair, it’s not a high-effort style which is always a bonus in my book.

#11 Shoulder-Length Wavy Shag with Textured Bangs
Textured bangs are one of those things that can completely change the vibe of a haircut, and this is a perfect example. Without them this would be a nice wavy shag, WITH them it has this whole personality and attitude that I just love. They’re choppy and piece-y and a little bit undone, which keeps everything feeling modern rather than prim. The rest of the cut has that light airy quality that works so well for finer hair, and the layers are adding volume exactly where you need it most, at the crown and through the mid-lengths. If you’ve been thinking about bangs but you’re scared of going full commitment, this textured style is a really great way to test the waters.

#12 Red Wavy Shag with Bouncy Layers
Okay this red is RICH and I love how it makes the whole cut feel so vibrant and alive. There’s a real energy to this look, the layers have great bounce and the waves are soft enough to move but defined enough to have shape. The bangs are doing that beautiful thing where they blend into the face-framing layers so there’s no harsh line, it all just flows together. I always tell my clients who want red that it’s the most high-maintenance color family out there because it fades faster than basically anything else, so if you go this route make sure you invest in a good color-depositing shampoo to keep things vibrant between appointments.

#13 Soft Wavy Shag with Airy Volume
This is one of those cuts that just makes me want to run my fingers through it because it looks SO soft and touchable. The layers are doing a beautiful job of creating fullness without bulk, which is honestly an art form when you’re working with fine to medium hair. And can we talk about how the subtle highlights are adding just enough dimension to keep things interesting without going overboard? Because that restraint is actually harder to achieve than a big dramatic highlight and I appreciate it. If you’ve got thick hair though, just know this same cut would need to be approached differently with some internal layering to keep it from going triangle-shaped on you.

#14 Tousled Red Wavy Shag with Lively Movement
The slightly tousled finish on this one is giving me major “I just look this cool without trying” energy and I am HERE for it. That warm red tone paired with the chin-length cut is such a fun combination, it feels spirited and confident without being over the top. The layers are creating gorgeous movement and I love that the overall shape has this slight roundness to it that’s really flattering. Something about a chin-length shag just makes people look like they have their life together, I don’t make the rules, I just observe them from behind the chair.

#15 Shoulder-Length Wavy Shag with Soft Textured Bangs
You know what I love about this look? It’s not trying to be 25. It’s elegant and modern and age-appropriate in the BEST way, like it’s not pretending to be something it’s not, it’s just a really well-executed cut on beautiful hair. The natural wave is enhanced by the layering and the bangs are soft enough to push aside when you want them out of your face but present enough to add that extra something. For anyone with finer hair who’s been scared of a shag because they think it’ll look too thin, THIS is the version you show your stylist because it proves you can absolutely make it work.

#16 Golden Wavy Shag with Warmth and Movement
That golden color is just RADIATING warmth and I cannot stop looking at it. It’s the kind of tone that makes your skin look healthy and your eyes look brighter, which, let’s be honest, is the whole point of coloring your hair. The layers here are soft and blended so there are no harsh lines, everything just flows into everything else and creates this really lovely cascading effect when the hair moves. You will probably want to work with a wave-defining cream to keep the texture looking intentional rather than frizzy, especially on second or third day hair.

#17 Voluminous Layered Wavy Shag with Soft Body
This is what I’d call a “confidence cut” because every single client I’ve given a version of this to has walked out standing a little taller. The layers around the face are so flattering it’s almost unfair, and the way they blend into the longer lengths in the back gives you volume AND movement at the same time. I think what makes this particular version so good is that the layers aren’t overdone, they’re placed strategically to create body where fine hair tends to fall flat, mainly at the crown and around the ears. You’d be surprised how much of a difference that targeted approach makes versus just going layer-happy everywhere.

#18 Pastel Pink Wavy Shag with Soft Texture
Okay can we PLEASE talk about this pastel pink because it is DREAMY and I want it for myself honestly. There’s this idea that fashion colors are “only for young people” and I think that is absolute nonsense because LOOK at how beautiful this is. The soft pink paired with those textured waves gives the whole look this ethereal quality that I am completely in love with. Now here’s the thing, light pastel shades like this usually require lifting your hair to a very pale blonde first which is a process, and the color itself fades faster than your regular shades. But if you’re someone who’s up for a little extra salon time because you love expressing yourself through your hair? Go for it and don’t look back.

#19 Blue-Toned Wavy Shag with Textured Fringe
Oh this is FUN. This is the cut for the client who comes in and says “surprise me” and actually means it, and I LIVE for that client. The blue against the natural gray is such a cool contrast, it’s like she’s not hiding the gray at all, she’s just adding to it, and that attitude is everything. The textured fringe gives it so much character and personality, and the short to medium length keeps it manageable while still having plenty of movement from the layers. I won’t sugarcoat it though, vivid blues require more upkeep than probably any other fashion color because they can shift green if you’re not careful with your water temperature and products. Worth it? I think so. But go in knowing what you’re signing up for.

#20 Medium-Length Wavy Shag with Natural Texture
Sometimes the most beautiful cuts are the ones that look like you didn’t do anything at all, and this is one of those. The natural wave here is just being left to do its thing and the layers are there to support it, not compete with it. I really appreciate how the face-framing pieces are cut to fall right at the jaw because it draws your eye to the center of the face in a way that’s universally flattering. For anyone with naturally wavy hair who’s been straightening it or fighting it or just generally having a complicated relationship with it, I want you to look at this photo and consider that maybe your texture has been the answer all along and you just needed the right cut to show you.

#21 Chin-Length Wavy Shag with Playful Texture
A chin-length shag is one of those cuts that I think gets overlooked because people assume shorter means less versatile, but ACTUALLY it’s one of the most flattering lengths for showing off wave and texture. Everything here is working, the length hits right at the jaw which is incredibly flattering, the textured layers give it that effortless cool factor, and the waves add enough volume that fine hair looks like it has way more going on than it actually does. You could honestly style this in about five minutes with a little product and a diffuser, or just let it air dry and embrace whatever happens because the cut is forgiving enough to look good either way.

#22 Burgundy Wavy Shag with Dimension and Warmth
If you’ve been thinking about going red but you’re nervous about it being too bright, THIS burgundy is the answer and I will die on that hill. It’s deep and rich and sophisticated, it has all the warmth of a red without screaming “LOOK AT MY HAIR” from across the room, you know? The layering here is really smart too, it’s concentrated more around the face and through the top to create volume where it matters most while leaving enough weight in the lengths to keep things from getting wispy at the bottom. Burgundy does require touch-ups to keep it from fading to a muddy tone, but the in-between stages are honestly still really pretty so it’s more forgiving than a lot of reds.

#23 Fiery Wavy Shag with Playful Layered Movement
This fiery color is giving me ALL the good vibes and combined with these playful layers it’s just such an energetic look. I love that the waves aren’t perfectly uniform, some are tighter, some are looser, it looks like real hair that a real person would have and that’s always more attractive than something that looks too “done.” The shoulder length is that perfect Goldilocks zone where you can still put it up when you need to but it’s short enough that it doesn’t feel heavy or overwhelming. And that warmth in the color is seriously gorgeous against so many different skin tones, it’s one of those shades I’d call a “crowd pleaser” because it just WORKS on almost everyone.

#24 Breezy Wavy Shag with Longer Back Layers
I really like the shape of this one because the slightly longer back with the shorter front creates this nice cascading effect that gives you the best of both worlds, framing around the face AND length you can play with. The texture here is light and breezy and it’s the kind of hair that looks good when the wind catches it, which is NOT something you can say about every haircut. For fine hair that tends to go flat by noon, a volumizing mousse worked through the roots while it’s still damp is going to be your best friend with this cut, it’ll keep that airy bounce going all day.

#25 Curly Wavy Shag with Volume and Face-Framing Layers
This one makes me SO happy because it’s fully embracing the curl and letting it be the star of the show, which is exactly how it should be. The face-framing layers are cut to work WITH the curl pattern rather than against it, so everything falls naturally into place instead of poofing out where you don’t want it. There’s so much natural volume here that you really don’t need to do much styling at all, just make sure you’re keeping those curls hydrated because curly and wavy hair is naturally more prone to dryness. A good hydrating leave-in conditioner is going to make the difference between curls that look alive and bouncy versus curls that look like they’re having a rough day, trust me on this one.
