I speak to women over 40 every day, and I hear them say they are tired of battling with their hair every morning. I’ve been having this conversation for years, and I love that we can talk about what their hair wants to do instead of what they’ve been battling for a decade.
A recent client of mine blow-dried her naturally wavy hair to make it stick straight as a result, she had end length damage. She wept with joy when I cut her hair and styled it. Many people can assume this only happens once, thereby making it more valuable to them. I love what good wash-and-go hair represents. It does make you look polished, though there is a misconception that it represents a lack of effort. In fact, just the opposite is true. It’s a sign of an excellent cut. The hair looks good enough to be able to do absolutely nothing to it, and the cut is so perfect, level, and controlled so that as the hair falls, everything lands in an intentional way. It is easily the highest level of hair cutting. My discourse to my clients is totally unconditioned, and people love the 24 video cuts I create to demonstrate this.

#1: Sleek Graduated Bob That Actually Moves
What I love about this graduated bob is its weight distribution. The hair is neither stacked at the back nor at the sides. The softness of the graduation allows for movement, suggesting that it helps the bob feel more alive rather than helmet-y. Many women find it preferable for the length to sit just above their shoulders since it won’t get in the way of their collarbones or get snagged under their scarves or jacket collars. The volume in this case works to her advantage. There’s just the right amount to maintain the shape, but not enough for it to be triangular. If you wanted to extend this look even further, adding a few fine highlights would beautifully catch the light without having to colour the entire thing.

#2 Textured Pixie with Just Enough Length on Top
The person in this photo is clearly more important than the haircut itself, and the person is doing great work. The back and sides are cut closer, making the hair as a whole more spiky rather than all flat against the head. Personally, I am a fan of the gray hair. It makes the look seem intentional and not just grown out. The hair will look better with some time and some washes instead of when it is fresh and out of the shower, which is all you could want for a cut that is low effort. Having a trim every four to five weeks is recommended so that the hair keeps its shape, but in between appointments, it is pretty self sufficient, and most of the time the hair just takes care of itself.

#3 Silver Feathered Bob at Chin Length
The method applied for the feathering in this bob is to make sure the ends do not look too blunt or too heavy. This is particularly true when working with silver hair because that color shows every hard line. She is right about chin length, as it hits the jaw line to create an upward focus. Maintaining silver is a whole new service, so anyone considering this color should know. A good purple shampoo is necessary to keep it from getting brassy between appointments. Otherwise, the cut is as wash-and-go as it will get. The tousled textured look will do the work for you.

#4 Shoulder-Length Wavy Bob with Warm Highlights
This style is ideal for clients who want something that looks “done” but isn’t too overly styled. The waves that you see here aren’t something that were styled in, rather, they’re a result of a cut shaped to work with the hair’s natural movement. The highlights are strategically placed to enhance the wavy effect and adds some dimension to the hair, which is something a single-process color just won’t do. The hair type this will suit best is medium to thick, as there will be enough body to support the waves and not make it fall flat by noon. The length is also forgiving; long enough that you can do a low ponytail when needed, and short enough that air-drying the hair doesn’t take forever.

#5 Textured Bob with Soft Bangs That Frame Without Fussing
These bangs are a great example of the level of skill required in this haircut and how they can change the whole shape of the hairstyle without being too heavy. They are light and dont need daily brush work, but enough to alter the shape. The bob has lightness to it that comes from the layering done in the interior of the bob, rather than just cutting the length of the bob. This is often the difference between a bob that moves and a bob that just sits there. This technique especially for fine to medium hair, prevents the ends from feeling too wispy, while still feeling light. I do worry about the bangs growing out quickly, so be sure to plan for a bang trim between full appointments.

#6 Short Crop with Gentle Layers Just Above the Jaw
Thanks for the restraint on this cut. There is balance, the layers don’t look dramatic and choppy, but just enough movement is created so the hair does not look like it was cut with one length in mind. The highlights do look subtle, but they do more than just add color, they work more like texture giving the eye something to follow through the shape. It’s not only the cut that photographs nicely, it’s the type of cut that is nice to see when you just happen to catch your reflection in the store window, which honestly is the better test.

#7 Short Crop with Volume Through the Crown
I would like to emphasize how the volume is concentrated at the crown and then tapers beautifully down to the nape. This is an intentional cutting choice, and it gives a nice lifted quality to the shape which is very nice on more rounded face shapes. The soft texture rather than piecey texture stops it from going into an area that’s too young or too editorial. For those with hair that likes to lie flat, a light volumising mousse worked in at the roots while damp will give this shape its longevity until a wash is due. A subtle balayage in the top layers will give a bit more dimension without changing the overall feel.

#8 Shoulder-Length Layers with Warm Rich Tones
The cuts have been done expertly to not give a dated curtain bangs effect while opening up the cheekbone area. The slight wave in the mid-lengths gives the entire cut a relaxed vibe as if she didn’t really try and it just fell into place. The warm color is stunning for her skin tone, and warmth is brought forward more than any highlighter. For someone who has had long hair, this is a super good cut, especially when wanting to go a few inches shorter without it being a massive change.

#9 Auburn Short Crop with Textured Layers
I always notice a person’s hair color first and your rich auburn is a great choice. It’s not too costume-y and reflects the light beautifully to bring out the texture of the cut. The layers are great as they provide volume at the top and at the sides without being too bulky, which can be a tricky thing to do. I would recommend a nourishing hair serum on the ends so the damage from the cut is not too apparent, plus keeping the ends shiny will give the whole hairstyle a polished look. This cut is ideal for someone who enjoys being the center of attention because the style and color are bold, yet remain quiet.

#10 Curly Crop with Beautiful Defined Curl Pattern
I can tell that this stylist knows how to work with curly hair. For example, this cut is not stuck on the curls, it is designed around the curls so that each curl can fall as it pleases to create the overall shape. This length, just above the shoulders, is great for this density as it allows the curls to spring up without the cut becoming too short. All this cut needs is a good curled cream, applied to soaking wet hair, dried and left to do its thing. The framing around the face is beautiful, and the curls border her face in a way that no blunt cut could achieve.

#11 Textured Bob with Bangs and Warm Undertones
It’s almost like there is intention behind the way the bangs and bob length work together here. Bangs that touch the eyebrows combined with length that sits just above the shoulders creates a nice visual rhythm that accentuates the space around the cheekbones. Additionally, the warm undertones in the color provide richness that a cooler tone would not capture as well. The relaxation and effortlessness of the waviness is great, but let’s be honest, keeping hair that level of waved and defined usually means you’ve been consciously scrunching product in on wash days instead of letting it air-dry.

#12 Angular Bob with a Polished Edge
Of all the styles I have spoken about, this is the most structured and the structure is what makes it fantastic. The cut has a clean, intentional back-to-front sloping angle, and the subtle layering prevents the style from looking too corporately stiff. It is a bob that can be worn equally to a dinner reservation as well as a Saturday morning coffee run, which is a tricky balance to achieve. If your hair tends to wave or get frizzy, you might have to use a little smoothing cream to hold the line, but if your hair is straight, then this is a wash-and-go style.

#13 Shoulder-Length Waves with an Airy Quality
I find the best aspect of this haircut to be its almost weightless feeling. The finer hair has been cut to work with its texture, allowing beautiful, airy movement and a stunning light-reflecting effect. The face-framing layers are almost imperceptible, and quite a soft touch, but they serve to prevent the hair from curtain-ing on either side of her face. This is the haircut where technique shows the most after a few weeks of growth, where all the elements have fallen to their natural position and the layering is more evident.

#14 Blunt Bob with Soft Bangs and Clean Lines
Blunt bobs are simple and classy, and the same cannot be said of layered haircuts. The weight of the hair ends being all one length offers a thick, full appearance and bouncy look which can be more healthy looking, even if the hair isn’t that in reality. The soft bangs allow the overall look to have more versatility, offering softness when combined with the rigidity of the cut. I must be honest, this is one of the if not the most high maintenance cuts of all and that’s because of how often you need to go to the salon for touchups. You’ll notice a lot of growth quickly on the lines of your cut and the bangs will need frequent clipping. If you are willing to put in the effort though, there is a reason to these cuts being timeless.

#15 Gray Bob with Face-Framing Bangs and Gentle Layers
I see some good examples for transitioning to natural greys and some that need work, and this is a good example. The bangs soften what is often an abrupt transition from grey to the skin, and the shoulder length is an easy length to have a variety of options. The layering is removing the right amount of weight to allow movement without going too far, which is key for older hair as the texture tends to change. If you wanted to take this further a few low lights instead of highlights would add depth. Personally, I think it’s done.

#16 Curly Lob That Celebrates Natural Texture
This haircut is for someone who is unapologetically confident in their curl pattern, and that is a compliment! The soft layers break up curl clumping and enhance the natural waves. My guess is the person who cut this knows the difference between dry and wet curly hair. Length just above the shoulders is the sweet spot for many wavy to curly textures because it is long enough to have weight pulling the curls into elongation, but short enough that it doesn’t stretch out and lose definition. A subtle hair gloss treatment would enhance those warm tones without committing to full color.

#17 Textured Lob with Soft Movement and Dimension
This cut exemplifies what I would call “the haircut that works for everything.” I don’t use that description for many haircuts. It looks versatile, the length is at that super versatile sweet spot, there’s waves but they’ll not overly precious about themselves, and the highlights are of the more natural placement variety (meaning they catch the light where the hair normally would, not in uniform foil contrived patterns). It also looks low maintenance (which is a good thing). There’s no curl placed, no wave coaxed. It just looks like hair that was cut well and left to do its own thing. For naturally wavy hair, this is the blueprint.

#18 Short Pixie with Softly Defined Gray Layers
The gray tones blend into the personality of the cut rather than the cut working around them. The top is layered for direction, yet soft enough to blend as it grows which buys time between appointments. This is a pixie that sits close to the head without hugging it which is more important than some realize, that little bit of lift at the crown changes the whole proportion. This is especially true for heart shaped faces, the way this opens up the forehead while keeping softness around the temples is stunning.

#19 Short Shag with Wispy Bangs and Natural Texture
This shag cut looks really good! The shag layers create movement around the hair and looks better the less you try. The wispy bangs are nice and at this length they look better than full bangs would. Full bangs could make the hair feel really top heavy and compete with the rest of the hair. The length is just above the jaw which is a nice detail because even half an inch longer and this would look like a bob and those two really different vibes. Her natural hair texture makes this cut better than any blow dryer could.

#20 A-Line Bob with Rich Auburn Dimension
The more subtle A-line shape is more likely to be better for wash-and-go styling. A steeper A-line would need more precision styling to look intentional, but this steeper angle would look more natural as it air dries with the rest of the hair. The auburn highlights are brightening the complexion, especially around the face, and top layers do so nicely without needing an all-over color. This is the cut I would recommend to someone looking for something shorter as it still feels like there’s more length at the front, while the back gives that clean, lifted look that feels fresher to the overall cut.

#21 Silver Lob with Soft Body and Modern Shape
Mid-length silver is hitting a note that loads of women desire, but find difficult to verbalize. Sophisticated, but not matronly. Modern, but not try-hard. The volume throughout the mid-lengths comes from layering that’s been done softly enough to create body without those visible steps that cheaper layering can create. The length is clever as well; long enough to tuck behind the ears, but short enough that the silver shows as a style choice and not a grow-out situation. This is the type of style that makes people rethink covering their grey.

#22 Short Curly Crop with Beautiful Definition
Great curls mean that the cut is actually secondary to the texture, which is a good indicator that the cut was done properly. Everything about this shape is supporting the curl pattern as opposed to the opposite. They let the natural spring and volume do the work to create the outline. The subtle color change at the ends gives a more sun-kissed look, which is much better than a solid color on curly hair. This length is the sweet spot for medium to thick curly hair. It gives the most definition and with the least amount of work. On wash day, you just need a curl defining gel and then you can honestly leave it alone. That is the whole routine.

#23 Wavy Lob with Warm Face-Framing Highlights
I want to discuss specifically the placement of the highlights here because they are doing something particular. The lightest pieces go right at the front of the face frame and then fade into a more natural color towards the back. This gives a brightening effect to the complexion almost like good lighting. You look more awake and rested, and no one can really pinpoint why. The lob cut itself is layered in a way that promotes the wave without needing to. So if the hair dries straight it still has shape. If it waves up, it looks like it was done on purpose. This is especially a great way to create the illusion of more hair for finer hair.

#24 Defined Curly Crop with Natural Volume
I appreciate this hairstyle because it emphasizes the curls of the wearer. The overall shape is extremely flattering, with a lower and more compact volume on the sides and more height and volume through the top and crown. The curls have a balanced moisture level and are not crunchy or heavy with product. They are well defined and look amazing. I also love that this cut is not apologetic about how much space the hair takes up, the volume is obviously the focus. For anyone with this curl density, I would definitely recommend this picture if you’ve been holding on to your hair long out of fear about going short.
