I can see the type of commitment that goes into deciding to get a pixie cut. It shows that you are really waiting to go for it. I can tell how an undercut may be a bit of a hinderance to you. I understand there is a lot of concern with removing that much hair, but honestly, especially over 50, it can work wonders in shaping the structure of your face. I can assure you, it is a completely different look that simply removing the length will not give you.
Some years back, I had a retired female judge as my client. She was very polished and had a chin-length bob hairstyle that probably hadn’t changed in at least two decades. One day, she came into the salon and mentioned that she had seen a woman in the grocery store who was about her age, and she had a very striking, edgy pixie cut, with one side completely shaved. My client couldn’t stop thinking about the hairdo. After talking with her about it, I really hoped she would go for it. You never forget moments like that. I remember her saying that she felt she had truly transformed. It’s hard to explain what that feeling is like, so it was very satisfying to know that I fully grasped it. The undercut made the cut look very structured, and she walked out of the salon completely different. An undercut pixie captures that sweet spot of structure without looking overly done.

The waves give amazing movement with this cut! You won’t always get this look with a pixie. The layers create a nice illusion that you have more hair. It focuses on your face which is great. The waves soften the look so it isn’t too harsh. It’s low maintenance and easy to keep up with regular trims.
#2 Silver Undercut Pixie with That Modern Edge
This looks good due to the design of how the silver catches the light and the texture contrasts with light with the sides cropped shorter. The overall look is modern and up to date without trying too hard. If you have fine to medium length hair and have an oval or heart shaped face then you are in luck because this is practically made for you. The only thing I can say is that for silver hair to like this clean and bright you are going to have to book toner appointments every few weeks depending on your water, how fast things go brassy, and the speed at which things brassy. If you commit it will be worth it.
#3 Clean Tapered Pixie with Subtle Silver
The neatness and cleanliness of how it was tapered on the sides is great. The hair has a nice structure to it but isn’t overly hard or masculine, more soft. The silver highlights are great too. They brighten the hair without being too obvious which is a tricky balance to achieve. The top has nice volume and texture which is great considering it is fine hair. It will be interesting to see how it looks as it grows out. The sides will need some upkeep, once an undercut taper starts growing it can lose its shape quickly.
#4 High-Textured Pixie with a Shaved Side
In this look, the most prominent feature is the contrast, with a very short length on the sides, and more pronounced, textured hair on the top. I think this is a really cool haircut, and it’s very different, but it may not be for everyone. You need to be open to the attention this look will bring, and considering the maintenance needed, as the sides will be grown out, and make your haircut look unclean, unpolished, and unfinished. For people with this mindset and attitude towards this haircut, it will definitely bring a clean cut, bold finish, as it requires standing appointments every three to four weeks.
#5 Classic Silver Pixie with a Hint of Undercut
Here’s what I’d show someone considering an undercut but a little anxious about committing. There is an undercut, but it is discreet enough to stop the sides from puffing out, and to let the mass live where it should, on top. The silver is stunning and super natural, and the overall shape is classic enough to work for an event as fancy as a board meeting, and as casual as going to brunch. The best hair type for this is fine to medium because you want that top section to have some body without getting heavy. This style is low fuss and has high reward.
#6 Voluminous Cropped Pixie with Undercut Detail
With this cut, I can really feel the personality! The length on top allows for some play, meaning you can push them forward, slide them to the side, or even mess them up some more with texturizing paste. The longer top pieces look good in every position. All the length is balanced out by the cropped sides. Just like that, this look makes you very versatile if you want to change your look without doing anything. It even still works as is, but highlights would add a nice touch more to the look.
#7 Curly Undercut Pixie That Actually Works with Your Texture
I think it’s great to see people with pixie cuts. People tend to think they can’t pull it off, especially with curly hair. But short hair and curls can work so well together, just look at the example. The curls on top are free to do their thing while the undercut helps keep the hair from getting too wide on the sides. The main concern for pixie cuts is the risk of going too bushy. Use a good curl cream to keep your curls defined and controlled and don’t be afraid to use it to tame the frizz, especially in humid weather. The layering at the crown is what provides that effortlessly thick and voluminous look that is so different with natural curls.
#8 Soft Silver Pixie with Face-Framing Layers
This haircut looks great. There aren’t any extremes, which is just right for that feeling of confidence and sophistication. The face-framing layers are also working softly to frame and bring attention to the most beautiful features. The bright silver color is great because it doesn’t wash people out. This style is perfect for fine hair of average density and it is also really manageable and low-maintenance. You will need to keep up with the shape and do a good job on trims because once they lose it they’ll look straight to dull.
#9 Curly Top Undercut with All the Personality
This cut and the undercut go perfectly together, giving a wonderful silhouette. This style works really well with your hair and not against it, if you have thick, wavy or curly hair. It gives the round face more height and the short sides reduce the amount of hair competing for attention. A product to define the curls is all you need.
#10 Layered Textured Pixie with Movement
The layers are great here. They are keeping close where you don’t want volume and adding it where you do. While that seems easy, that is actually the whole technique of a great pixie cut. This is especially good for fine hair as the texturing makes it look like there is more hair. I also think this is a great cut for transitioning. If you have never gone this short, this is a safe place to start because it still maintains a feminine and put together feel while being super easy.
#11 Short Pixie with Soft Fringe
The small piece of fringe really elevates the cut from being just an ordinary short pixie. This softens the forehead in a flattering way, and creates a good focal point for the eyes. The sides are cut close which pushes the volume to the top. This is ideal if you have fine hair because all the volume needs to be at the top. With just a few pieces of highlights for depth would look great too, and then styling would be really low maintenance too which is hard to beat. I mean just a couple minutes in the morning is all it takes.
#12 Sleek Gray Undercut with Textured Crown
The contrast at the top is what sets it apart from the clean undercut. A square jaw is also a good reason as to why this works since the top volume draws the eye up. The gray is fully embraced, which I always respect, and the texture prevents it from being flat or one dimensional. You could absolutely take this to a bolder color direction further down the road if you chose to, but I think the natural gray with this much texture is really beautiful by itself.
#13 Lifted Textured Pixie with Edge
I love the addition of height as the lift at the crown provides a different look to most pixie cuts, and it appears very self-assured. The sides are short, and the top has a textured, piece-y look that is more intentional and less messy. Fine hair will probably require some volumizing powder to achieve that lift and texture without things going crunchy. This cut is not my favored on very rounded faces, but on oval and square shapes, it is really something.
#14 Bold Undercut Pixie with Crown Texture
This undercut is certainly bolder than the others on this list, but when it comes to undercuts, there really is no such thing as subtle. And that is exactly what this cut does. The volume and interest come from the texture on top, and the shaved sides make the whole thing feel intentional and a bit more daring. This cut probably looks like it would take a lot of time and effort to style, but in reality it just requires effort on your part to get the shape right. The more extreme the undercut the more maintenance you’re going to have to do, but I’m sure that’s something you already know.
#15 Voluminous Undercut Pixie with Warm Dimension
I like the warm colors and small detail in the color. The cut gives good volume on top, and the undercut keeps it from looking grown out. For fine or medium density hair, this shape is perfect since it gives the ideal fullness. With decent product and a round brush, it takes a minute or two to style, but once you do, it holds well.
#16 Asymmetrical Textured Pixie with Undercut
I would say a bit of attitude is nice. I like how the asymmetry is a tad artistic and the underside balances it. If it weren’t for that, it might just look like a grow out. For guys with wavy or curly hair this is a winner because it allows the longer top pieces to wave out and the shorter sides sort of control the wavy hair. I would say, this cut requires a little more thought than some of the other easier styles. You will have to work with the shape to get that messy look just right. It may take some time, but that will help get the right routine to pull it off.
#17 Highlighted Pixie with Vibrant Color Work
The highlights against the deeper base color of the hair do a lot of work, they create a beautiful contrast. The whole cut comes alive with the different hues. If you have any waves in your hair this color will pop because every wave and imperfection will reflect light differently. The framed face color looks soft and nice. The only real concern I would have is that short hair with bold highlights needs touch ups more often than you would think. There will always be visible grow out because there is nowhere for hair to grow out to hide it, however, once it is fresh the hair looks really beautiful.
#18 Gray Pixie with Root Contrast and Defined Layers
I like how the darker roots blend into the lighter ends. This adds some visual depth to the cut and really accentuates all the layers. This is smart if you’re going gray and want to embrace it without being completely uniform silver. The contrast keeps it youthful. The layers are well defined and are doing their job, which is to give movement and avoid the flat look. It is good for so many face shapes which is always a plus.
#19 Wavy Textured Pixie with Soft Definition
The waves in this sample seem both organized and not chaotic, lived in, or natural. The length on the sides is short enough to keep everything looking sleek and the top has enough length to give you that moving fluidity. I think this is a very wearable version of the textured pixie which doesn’t mean you look overly bold and also doesn’t take a lot of commitment. It just looks like good hair. Seaside salt spray would get you this texture with minimal effort and that would be all you’d need most days.
#20 Textured Layers on a Short Undercut
With how short the length is, I don’t think it’ll end up feeling helmet-y (because that is a concern when going this short). The layers provide an airy feeling, which I think is nice. The side undercuts provide decent contrast and structure, while the top remains soft and touchable. Fine hair looks its best in styles like this; movement is natural and effortless, and it won’t require any products. As the layers grow out, it is crucial to keep those layers maintained. They will grow out faster than expected, and the shape will end up looking messy.
#21 Silver Undercut Pixie with Volume and Texture
The metallic hue is complemented by the undercut and gives off a very contemporary and stylish look, which I believe suits mature ladies very nicely. The added height ensures that it doesn’t come off as too severe, and the wave in the texture adds an element of softness so it won’t be too rigid. This is a great style for people with oval or round face shapes. This style works best with fine to medium hair. If you have very thick hair, you could find the top section uncomfortably bulky, although this is something your stylist should be able to fix with thinning shears.
#22 Silver Pixie with Airy Layers
You can tell the style is expensive. Cuts with a lot of layers often tend to look fussy or busy, but this one keeps everything nice and clean. The silvery color is natural and looks like it’s meant to be. The back is 2 to 3 inches which gives it nice movement without lots of flipping. The overall silhouette is clean and not too dramatic. If you’re looking to grow out your natural silver, this is a good reference. I think it looks good just like this, but a little subtle balayage would add more dimension.
#23 Textured Pixie with Soft Undercut Framing
I love how the hair frames the face, and the undercut is subtle but gives a clean look at the sides and lets the texture on top be the focus. The highlights bring a lovely brightness to the whole look, creating a beautiful illuminated-from-within look that makes the texture more fascinating.
With the length right above the ears, you can either tuck one side behind your ear or let it fall forward, depending on your mood. The soft layers are just right for fine hair to create a nice shape without removing too much bulk.
#24 Tousled Silver Pixie with Bold Undercut
I really like how bold this look is. The layers give it the “I woke up and just rolled out of bed” look, but the neat undercut shows you’ve got your look down to a science. This will work best if you have fine hair and medium density because you want the top to have a lot of movement without adding a ton of weight, and the silver hair will reflect light and create so much texture. If you’ve been safe for a long time with your hair, this might be the look to push you over the edge.
#25 Highlighted Pixie with Dimension and Warmth
I really like what the highlights are doing, they bring brightness to everything and give the cut a flattering warmth against skin tones. The longer pieces in front and shorter in the back create a nice shape that moves well and doesn’t just sit there. For fine hair, I would suggest a light volumizing mousse worked through when damp to give those layers something to hold onto. I think this is a really elegant take on the pixie that feels current and not at all like you’re trying to look younger, it just naturally does that on its own.
#26 Platinum Textured Pixie with Easy Volume
Going platinum can be a big commitment – both for the color and the upkeep. When it comes to platinum hair, while it can look absolutely stunning, it can also look dull and lifeless. But it sure can be a showstopper like in this example. The hairstyle is soft and airy and the added texture creates the illusion of more volume, which is a breath of fresh air to see! This cut will look especially flattering on face shapes that are oval or heart-shaped. For those looking to take the plunge and try out a platinum color, be sure to have the means for consistent color maintenance.
