Every client who sits in my chair almost always says they want to “still look like themselves, just better”. I can visualize what this type of person looks like, and I see that as a pretty good goal. This feeling is what all of my hopes and dreams for this collection are riding on. I feel like I say something to the effect of “as the years go on, so too will your hair” every year. I can understand that there is something to be lost in the mental struggle, and that there is a definate upside to some changes. While sleek, shiny hair may be desired, there is something so much more intriguing about hair that is silver and its light. When it comes to cutting hair, fine hair is the easiest to cut as there is very little hair to resist the structure. The goal here is to make the most of what your hair is, not resist the changes.
A client of mine had been growing her hair to her shoulders for decades. When she asked me what I would do if I had the chance, I told her I would do a cropped pixie. I can’t believe how many times she touched her head. It was a new experience for her to have a haircut that felt like it belonged to her. It is always great to see the feeling and experience a good volumetric haircut can bring to a client, but is particularly rewarding to the clients that look older than they really are. This is exactly the result I am aiming for as I want to leave clients with hairstyles that are modern and effortless, because they will have a good haircut.
#1: A Little Pixie That Earns Its Keep
I love pixie haircuts that look a bit messy, especially when it’s the cut that accomplishes most of the look. This one has just the right amount of layering on top to create volume with the fine hair, but not so much that it looks overly done. The lightened ends provide a good “woken up” look and I like how it means no full color job, just some subtle and strategic highlights. The personality of the cut will mean you’ll need to do some maintenance every five weeks to keep it looking fresh, but the upkeep is minimal. Just a wash and go will do, and you can add a bit of styling wax if you want to!
#2 Cropped and Easy with a Soft Bang
Although I can’t explain it, I personally find short hair with bangs to be especially approachable. This particular cut is above the ears with a decent amount of texture added to the top, so it won’t fall flat by noon. Honestly, that is what most of my clients seem to care about the most. If your hair is a little straighter or has a slight wave to it, this particular haircut will be great for you. Styling this cut is easy. In fact, just finger drying is all you need to do. The downside is that it requires frequent trims. This is especially true if you want to keep the shape of the cut intact since it will begin to change once your hair grows out past your ears.
#3 A Bob That Doesn’t Take Itself Too Seriously
I often say that a soft bob haircut with a faint wave is a white t-shirt and great jeans; it just works and doesn’t have to shout. This cut is right above the shoulders which is the sweet spot. It’s long enough to be tucked behind the ears but short enough that you won’t be spending twenty minutes with a round brush every single morning. The waves are soft, not “I just left the salon” curls, but more like “I kind of scrunched it and let it be.” If your hair is finer, use a little volumizing mousse on damp hair and you’ll achieve this.
#4 The Pixie You Can Style in Your Sleep
Here, the gray hair is creating something truly beautiful. The light catches the individual strands and gives an almost pearlescent effect that you just can’t get with colored hair. The hair is also styled shorter, and the low maintenance cut with gentle layers also keeps the look from being too harsh. This is one of the biggest worries I think most people have about going this short. If your hair fine, this cut is going to be your best friend because the layers will create the look of more hair without you needing to use a ton of product. If you have thick hair, your stylist will just need to take out a little more weight through the crown so it doesn’t get too puffy.
#5 A Bob with Just Enough Going On
I love the way this haircut sits! The front layers are a bit longer and will sweep across the cheekbone. The layers in the back provide more movement to prevent the look of looking stiff or helmet-y (which I hate for bobs). The cut is above the shoulders so that means it will be low effort to style! If you’ve been meaning to grow out your natural color, this is the cut to do it, because it won’t look messy, just intentional! To keep the cut looking good, a trim every 6 weeks will do the trick.
#6 Clean Lines, No Fuss
I have a mixed relationship with blunt bobs as they can either look really chic or can look like “I want to speak to the manager” and the difference is in the details. This one nails it. The chin-length hits at a really flattering spot and there is just enough texture at the ends to keep it looking really nice. Straight hair or hair with a very slight wave here is perfect. If you want enough hair to hold the shape but without it being too heavy at the bottom, medium density is the sweet spot. If you are down for a color, an ash-blonde tone would be stunning with this.
#7 Silver Pixie with a Little Attitude
When I style people, I feel like they have something fun planned. Face framing layers will open up the face and elongate the look including the cheekbones. The entire look will give you so much confidence without the added fuss. The silver is beautiful and with shorter hair you won’t have to deal with blow dry battles for that smooth finish every day. I will be honest, you will need to get trimmed regularly, but it will be worth it with all the time you’ll save on styling. A little lightweight wax through the top layers will be all you need to tame it.
#8 Volume Where It Matters Most
What I like is that the volume is at the crown which is quite the area that flattens first as the hair gets finer. The construction of the layers is built from the top and then the sides are cut shorter so you get a nice lift without it getting round and old-school. That height on top is definitely working in your favor proportionally if you have a rounder face. The medium density here gives it nice lightness and that airy feel without the heaviness. The styling is really easy; just a root-lifting spray and a little finger styling and you are good to go.
#9 Softly Does It
If you don’t feel comfortable going very short with your hair, I’d suggest this kind of pixie because it’s not too extreme and still keeps a lot of beauty. The layered cut is soft and smooth (not choppy) which prevents your hair from looking messy and promotes an easy, flowing hairstyle. This pixie cut will work best with straight hair or hair that has a soft, loose wave. The face framing layers around your face soften the entire look and require very little maintenance. The best thing about this hairstyle is it looks so effortlessly natural, as if your hair decided on its own to do something beautiful.
#10 The “I Woke Up Like This” Pixie
Some short hairstyles might appear too extreme, but this one gives soft shapes at the temples and nape which makes it more relaxed and effortless. The texture on the top has enough lift to keep it from clinging to your head, which is crucial for pixie cuts on fine hair. I would recommend this to just about anyone who wants to stop worrying about their hair every morning, and wants to look put together with little effort. A tiny bit of smoothing cream on humid days is all that is needed.
#11 A Silver Bob That Knows What It’s Doing
I cannot recommend chin length bobs enough. When styled correctly, they truly look effortless and bring a level of elegance to the wearer. This bob is also long enough to keep some of the end layering which helps to avoid a flat, heavy, lifeless appearance. The silver color is gorgeous! Paired with the layers, this bob gets a rounded modern movement in the sides which helps to create that depth to the color that can sometimes be seen with balayage. For those wanting to go gray, this bob style really makes it look intentional, and to be honest, very pretty.
#12 Feathered and Light
The feathering in this hairstyle creates more softness and movement without losing bulk. I think that the platinum shade creates a more supremely luminous and abundant effect, ultimately thickening the appearance of fine hair. Here, the haircut and color are so well done, and if one were to be omitted, it would negatively affect the overall look. If you are not this light, you can discuss a cool-toned platinum toner with your colorist. It looks sophisticated and natural on silver or white hair as well.
#13 Crown Volume Without the Drama
When a client asks for a cut that sits between a bob and a pixie, I think about crops like this. This style keeps length short and manageable but gives a bit more to work with framing the face. The crown layer’s work is creating the fullness on top, turning fine hair into a thick looking mane. If you’re not ready for a full pixie cut, the chin length pieces in front are a nice touch to keep everything from feeling too exposed. With this style, keep your volumizing spray light to build product up gradually instead of weighing everything down all at once.
#14 Textured Crop with a Gentle Edge
This is one of those styles where a little bit of product can give you a huge result, but to be honest even with out product the style looks really good — just a little different which is nice because you get two looks for one cut! The added layers and dimension prevent fine hair from falling flat and the soft edges around the face keep it approachable. I appreciate the highlights here, they are very subtle, but also do just right enough to add a little depth so it doesn’t all read as one solid tone. Sometimes that’s all you need.
#15 Easy Lift, Easy Life
Crown volume is everything and is all built into the cut so you won’t have to rely on products and a blow dry to do this every morning. The face-framing layers are flattering, while not being too obvious. I actually really appreciate that type of layering. If you want some extra oomph on days where you have somewhere to be, then a texturizing spray is all you need to achieve the piece-y, lived-in look that makes it look like you put effort into your hair when you actually only spent about thirty seconds on it. This cut forgives a lot of the I didn’t feel like doing my hair today.
#16 Chin-Length and Quietly Flattering
Not every haircut can be great. As if by magic, the right ingredients fell into place to make this one shine, and it was the stylist’s layering technique. Layers help create movement, and with fine and straight hair, detailed layering breaks the weight of the hair just enough to create the appearance of increased thickness and body. The natural color here is the icing on the cake, but if you don’t like dealing with color appointments, this is a style that makes that choice look very intentional.
#17 Short Silver Pixie, Maximum Impact
This look is full of personality! The layers are wispy, but done really well as they add volume to fine hair where it’s needed most – at the top and crown. This style feels really modern and it’s not dated or matronly like some people think when they get a short style, and it has an airy feel which is fab. If your silver hair has warm undertones and cooler tones are more your vibe, then you can use a purple shampoo once a week to keep your hair looking fresh and clean without having to visit the salon for a color.
#18 Delicate Layers That Do the Talking
A hair cut should look good on all people who wear it, and it is nice that this one shows movement with wispier, lighter layers that do not require styling. This cut is great if you are all gray because it flaunts and does not hide your gray. Let’s be honest; this cut is low maintenance, but it will get out of shape and need frequent trims. A fresh cut looks really nice when the hair is the same length with good shape. If the shape is gone, it is not a good cut. You are going to want to get trims to keep the hair cut updated. With this cut, you get low maintenance hair but also the option to keep styling it.
#19 Short and Lively
The joy and liveliness in this hair cut is really apparent, and it really makes me feel joyful about the cut as well! The layers in this cut move and have more texture than the previous cuts I have reviewed and also give a sense of liveliness. The top being longer really adds some contrast to the sides being cut closer. Using a little bit of dry texture spray at the roots of the layers really helps if your hair lays really flat. This cut still looks really good when it has grown out a little, which is a total luxury!
#20 A Chin-Length Bob That Actually Behaves
While most people think that bobs are an easy hairstyle, fake bobs are troublesome; they flip in the back, go super flat, and hit that weird jawline angle. This looks very intentional because it is sitting where it was meant to, and the highlights are just right. They look natural and not worn, and give dimension, warmth and interest to the hair. The finer the hair, the better this look becomes, as the structure to the shape without the weight is even greater. In the case of thicker or curlier hair, the stylist will need to adjust the internal layers to create the smooth look desired.
#21 Soft Bob, Big Personality
What I like about this one is that it manages to look both polished and a little more relaxed. The chin length keeps it looking intentional and the soft layers give it enough texture so that it doesn’t go flat halfway through the day. Fine hair works to your advantage here because it allows for all those layers to create that nice, natural, airy movement. For thicker hair, that would be a lot more effort. If you wanted to add a little more interest, very fine highlights around the face would be beautiful. Honestly, it looks great as it is.
#22 Quick and Classic with a Fringe
I can’t think of a hairstyle that I like better than bobs and soft bangs. I usually tell people when I think a hairstyle isn’t for them, but I genuinely believe this hairstyle would suit everyone! The bangs I’m talking about are blended and soft without any blunt edges which help create the illusion of a shorter forehead but still frame your face so you don’t look like you’re hiding behind your hair. Bangs also help draw attention to your eyes. This is also the perfect length for easy styling because a quick blow dry (or even just air drying) is all you need to get the hair looking ready to go. If you’ve been thinking about getting bangs but are feeling unsure this is, without a doubt, the first one I would recommend. It looks great when you first get it and it looks good even when you’re growing it out so it’s super easy to grow out!
#23 Silver Bob with Perfectly Placed Layers
The layering on this piece is nice since it all looks like one solid movement and you don’t see it being cut into sections. The border around the face is also great as it brings attention to the eyes and cheekbones. It’s chin length, so in terms of effort to style and maintain, it’s a pretty manageable length. Although, most bobs with layering do require the odd trim every six weeks to keep the layering in shape. The silver looks stunning. I wouldn’t suggest adding highlights unless you really wanted that, since sometimes the natural tone is the whole point.
#24 Layers That Hug the Face Just Right
For this cut, the layers will sit at your cheekbone, giving a subtle lift and opening up your whole face! This cut looks so much nicer in person than in photos, but the compliments will be endless! You can just like stand in front of someone and see how bright and well rested they look and that is definitely a huge compliment to the cut! The natural color is gorgeous and since its fine to medium it textures and moves well with minimal product. A light hold hair spray will be the most you need in a day and it will stay in place.
#25 Shoulder-Length and Effortlessly Pretty
Not everyone has to go for a shorter hairstyle! With the right cut, even longer hair can be just as easy to manage as shorter hair. These layers prevent the hair from feeling heavy or shapeless, and with most people, the shoulder-length cut hangs at a very flattering length. This works beautifully with fine to medium hair because it has enough weight to keep the hair from flying away, but not so much that it drags the style down. One of the things that makes this work as an ‘over 70’ style is that the texture keeps the look current and not just like someone has been growing their hair out and hoping for the best. No judgment though because it’s something we have all been through!
