I’ll never forget my first experience of a tousled pixie bob making a huge change to a client’s energy. She had been my client for a while and had been keeping the same shoulder-length layered haircut for about twelve years. She came in and said that she wanted a change but couldn’t really describe it. I gave her a loose, travel-worn pixie bob, as if she had just returned from a trip to Bohemia. She shed a few tears, but that is actually a very common. It wasn’t a big emotional swing, nor was it super dramatic or edgy. It was a feeling of wearing the real you for the first time.
The beauty of this haircut is that it is really easy to wear, which means it can be totally put together or totally casual! It moves with you and along with the cut, it’s all about the texture. This style requires little to no effort to style, which is why it works for every hair type and face shape, regardless of age. I’ve done this haircut on women in their twenties, and I’ve done it on ladies in their seventies. It has been across all generations every single time. What changes? The color and layering. The foundation is always the same because I know the basics are sound.
It all hinges on how much weight you leave in and where you leave it.

#1: Textured Tousled Pixie Bob with Subtle Highlights
When you say your hair looks layered, it means your hair has the ability to move rather than looking thin. It looks good that the highlights aren’t fighting with the cut, they’re just softly contributing to the dimension, and catching light on the top layers where the eyes focus. In person, this photoshoot cut looks even better because you see the texture shift when she moves her head. This type of layering is especially good for hair that tends to hang flat.

#2 Chic Tousled Pixie Bob with Soft Waves
The hairstyle looks casual and effortless but in reality it looks like it took some time. The waves look very soft and the length of the hair does not fight with the waves. The hair hitting just above the jawline gives a nice clean look. For this hairstyle, a good return on minimal effort, about eighty percent of the look can be achieved with a little sea salt spray scrunched through damp hair.

#3 Rich Chestnut Tousled Pixie with Soft Textures
I like chestnut because it adds shape and definition to hair and allows for dimension in layers that would be lost with a solid single-process color. I appreciate the cut as well, the varying lengths seem intentional which is harder to achieve than most people think, poc, and it is especially the case with shorter hair. The stylist seemed to know how to create fullness through the crown without putting weight on the sides and that tells me she was competent.

#4 Platinum-Blonde Edgy Textured Pixie
This is a commitment cut in the most optimal way. The platinum will need real maintenance, but it also transforms the feel of those edgy layers into something almost architectural. On fine hair especially, this type of layering gives the illusion of more hair, and that effect is enhanced with the lighter color. I would recommend a good purple shampoo to keep the tone cool between appointments. The longer pieces on top offer flexibility which is nice when you want to style it or just sweep it to one side for an easy look.

#5 Voluminous Chestnut Windswept Pixie
I enjoy the movement in this style. The chestnut hair color is complimentary and not too overwhelming. Plus the color will not require you to come in every four weeks to maintain it. The way the hair is styled looks like she just walked through a crowded street and her hair moved with the environment. The layering in the crown adds a nice, natural volume which is always my preference when the hair is this textured.

#6 Chic Caramel Swirl Tousled Bob
The caramel in this piece reflects light so the waves look more multi-dimensional than what a single solid color would provide. I consider this a gateway cut for those thinking about going shorter. This length is short enough to feel like a big change but it’s also long enough that you probably won’t be stressed about it in the morning. If you have thin hair then the added volume will be nice. A small amount of lightweight mousse will help those waves stay defined throughout the afternoon.

#7 Brunette Whirlwind Tousled Pixie Bob
I really like how the movement looks like it almost spiraled around the face. It gives youthful energy without being childish. The lightened tips are a good choice because they create the illusion of more volume at the ends. That is usually where fine hair needs help the most, so it’s nice to see that taken into consideration. It’s one of those hair cuts that relies a lot on the scissor skills of the stylist because the shape will need to be precise enough to look carelessly imprecise.

#8 Brunette Cascade with Voluminous Waves
These big waves make it seem like there’s been some heavy lifting done to draw attention upwards, i.e. lifting the eyes, while the rest of the style reads more casual. With medium to thick hair, the gradual layering allows you to avoid bulk while maintaining that fullness. This is the sort of cut that I always think of when I consider a style that will look good growing out. Not every short style will age well at six to eight weeks, but the graduated layers here offer the flexibility for it to transform.

#9 Stylish Ash Blonde Tapered Pixie with Feathered Layers
The construction of the feathering is done really well. It looks great how it adds volume to the crown without adding bulk to the sides, and the taper nape keeps it all looking clean. The ash blonde looks especially good for cold skin tones, and brings a modern, even editorial look to the whole cut. The style is super low effort after it’s been cut, which I like. I think it’s possible to get away with just a quick tousle, and maybe a bit of texturizing paste in the top layers, and that would be it. The downside is that there’s not much you can do in terms of styling, but for a lot of women, that’s a feature, not a drawback.

#10 Refined Brunette Wavy Pixie with Subtle Highlights
The way chocolate brown and soft caramel work together looks classy every time. I love the look because it works on such a wide variety of people. One thing I’ve noticed is the subtle asymmetry really draws the eye and helps the whole style stand out compared to something more uniform. The extra wave makes it look a little more interesting without adding too much extra effort and the length is forgiving. You’ll be able to hold off on the trim for longer than you’d think even if you’re busy!

#11 Subtle Chestnut Waves with Graduated Texture
This cut has layered back which helps it maintain its shape. To me, that’s a sign of great architectural design. The warm front highlights create a personally flattering and bright effect. A style finishing just above the jaw is universally flattering and perfect. This really requires little to no adjustment. Enjoy this style and be sure to book regular five to six week appointments to keep those back layers fresh.

#12 Chic Chestnut Whirls in a Breezy Pixie Bob
I appreciate the softness of the asymmetry. I know softness is often difficult due to the hard and soft balance. I appreciate the work. Decking chestnut adds depth to the texture, and, with the colour, construction seems nearly visible in the cut. The construction seems almost writeable in the layered cut. This effect is particularly true with medium to thick hair, because with layered cut there is enough weight to hold the cut positioned throughout the day. This effect is particularly true with medium to thick hair, because layered cut uses enough weight to hold the cut positioned throughout the day. This creates that tousled volume without constant restyling.

#13 Rustic Copper Casual Wave Pixie
I love that the auburn brown tones are coming through, warming up the entire face, and are very natural, like a sun kiss of your own color. I like the choppy waves, it gives the whole look a lived-in feel that an overly uniform wave pattern wouldn’t achieve. I find the cheekbone area very flattering for heart shaped faces. If there is a hair manipulator essential, this is it. You may want to keep a curl refresher spray on hand for second day hair.

#14 Vibrant Ebony Tousled Pixie with Playful Fringe
The fringe completes this haircut. Other styles of pixies may look good without a fringe, but this one is clearly designed to feature a fringe. The way the bangs soften the forehead really pulls the whole look together. It’s a style that I think works for a lot of different ages. The contrast between the messy top and the shorter cut sides is nice, and a darker color works better here than a lighter one would. If you are considering going for very short hair, this is a great image to bring to your stylist.

#15 Bright Blonde Textured Pixie with Layered Bangs
Crown volume makes this cut sell. With bright blonde color, it encourages the eye to go up and lengthen the face, which is particularly good for round face shapes. Bangs that are layered offer some versatility, and can be worn in two different ways: forward to make it softer, and back to make things a little more defined. I will say that this color may not be low maintenance. The fresh look will be striking, but be prepared for it to demand your attention every 4-5 weeks. Textured layers help, but single-length hair will catch the light up to a point.

#16 Effortlessly Chic Tousled Pixie Bob
I don’t use the word effortless often, but this one deserves it. Most “effortless” cuts usually take more effort than anyone admits, but these textured layers have just the right amount of length variation to create movement on their own. If you have fine to medium density hair, this also means less work is needed with a round brush or an iron. The shape around the face is clean but not too harsh, and I can see this looking just as good on a Tuesday morning errand run as it would at a dinner out.

#17 Breezy Chestnut Tousled Bob with Dynamic Waves
I really like the soft chestnut color and the natural waves and how effortless it looks. The waves feel perfect, as they are styled, but not so structured that it feels fussy. With hair that is thinner, the waves create an illusion of volume, and the length of the style really allows the waves to move. A little anti-frizz cream on the ends will help define everything while keeping that natural feel!

#18 Charming Auburn Waves with Natural Body
I really like the color of the hair. It looks nice and natural, which is better than some of the other brighter, more unnatural colors I have seen. It also goes really well with your skintone as it bring some nice warmth to your overall look. The way they have done the cut with layered waves is nice as it looks like it goes well with the natural body of your hair, rather than creating a false look. The framing layers look nice around the cheekbones, and the overall length is enough to keep the style really manageable in the morning, while also allowing for some different looks if you wanted to style it a little differently.

#19 Golden Blonde Layered Pixie with Soft Waves
Here, the use of color is, in my opinion, understatedly genius. The golden blonde has the right amount of tonal variation to give the impression of thickness, even in fine hair. The subtle shifts in color create an illusion of depth and dimension. I like that layering has been kept to a minimum. It is a common case that less is more with the light colors that have a lot of visual interest. Jaw length is flattering on most people and tends to be the sweet spot where you get the ease of short hair without being too exposed.

#20 Rich Espresso Voluminous Pixie with Natural Curls
If you’ve been working with finger waves, look here. The espresso color really helps to enhance the definition of the curl pattern and volume, which is something that a flat iron and product cannot replicate. For rounder faces, the height at the crown helps to balance out proportions, which is an added benefit. This cut does require a bit more from you in terms of curl cream and knowing how your curl pattern works when it’s shorter, but once you get the hang of it, this is extremely rewarding style to wear.

#21 Silver Layered Pixie with Soft Waves
I adore silver hair, and this is a gorgeous example of silver done right. The transition from dark roots to light ends looks watercolory in the best way, and prevents the color from looking washed out. The ends are the most airy with medium and fine hair, and the face framing waves look soft and not overly styled. If you are thinking about leaning into your gray, this is a fabulous example. Keeping this shade of silver will definitely require a lot of commitment in terms of using toning shampoo as it will most likely become yellow, but the modern, natural look makes the effort worth it.

#22 Playful Copper Tousled Pixie with Voluminous Waves
I love the copper color. It’s very bold and catches the light when showing the dimensions of the waves. The flares widen the frame of the face in a flattering way, and the layered back creates enough volume that thinner hair looks full and healthy. Copper is a high-maintenance color, but it’s fresh and has an energy that more toned-down colors don’t have. If you’ve been thinking of going warmer, this is the type of result that makes the maintenance worth it.

#23 Textured Cinnamon Pixie Bob with Soft Undercut
An undercut is functional and structural by cutting the bulk at the nape allowing the top layers to sit better. When paired with medium-density hair, the undercut is a good choice as it helps in maintaining a clean overall silhouette without making anything look thin. The grounding and warm tone of cinnamon is soft paired with the top layers and that tousled like I-just-ran-my-fingers-through-my-hair-and-walked-out-the-door-messiness look is perfection. And honestly, with this cut, is all you would have to do.

#24 Softly Tousled Blonde Pixie with Natural Texture
First, I would like to mention that I see a lot of volume achieved through just layering and not using any product or heat. This tells me that there is a lot of good construction done with this cut, because styling is much easier than the actual cut. On fine hair, this type of soft layering will create a natural fullness that doesn’t look overly constructed, and the blonde contributes to that lightness. A light volumizing spray at the roots would enhance what is already there, without weighing anything down.

#25 Deep Chocolate Wavy Pixie with Asymmetrical Bangs
The type of bangs shown here define this haircut and add some dimension. Without bangs, we’d achieve a nice wavy pixie. With bangs, it gives it real direction. The rich chocolate colour really catches the light and shows some warm undertones that are delightful to discover with movement. This length on wavy to curly hair is very satisfying because the hair does most of the work. A diffuse dry or even air dry will get you really close to the style shown.

#26 Dynamic Chestnut Textured Pixie with Natural Highlights
The highlights have been deliberately added to enhance the texture of the hair without taking away from the focus of the haircut. This takes a lot of restraint from the colorist. Having height at the crown and a soft taper around the front of the face gives a look that is youthful but also sophisticated and would look appropriate in a boardroom just as much as a weekend farmers market. On fine to medium hair, the texturized layers give an amount of volume to the hair that the hair would not have otherwise, and that is the goal of good layering. Just a bit of texturizing spray and you are good to go.

#27 Sun-Kissed Blonde Layered Pixie with Soft Waves
I take this cut as a compliment! It has that vacation hair feel that gives off an “easy-breezy” vibe, and tells you to stop overthinking it. The sunkissed blonde is great for covering greys, which is a practical plus that often goes unmentioned. The nice, flowing, uneven waves create ideal volume for thinner hair and look like the stylist really cut with movement and not just a blocky shape.

#28 Textured Tousled Pixie Bob with Lush Layers
The balayage in this haircut contributes a nice, warm depth which helps the layers stand out. I appreciate the texture. It’s just the right amount, and is tousled without being messy. That is a balance that takes skill. The length provides some versatility. The low density fine hair works to the advantage here as the layers create an airy, light, and free feeling that thicker hair would not produce. This is a haircut that knows what it is, and doesn’t try to be anything more.

#29 Textured Tousled Pixie Bob with Natural Highlights
I really like how blended your highlights are. They look so natural, almost like your real color just catching the light in different places. Definitely a good sign of color work. The length right above the jawline is universally good, and the soft layering gives more texture and body to fine hair without it looking wispy, so I like the ease of this cut. It doesn’t take much to explain because it’s doing something really simple and straightforward so well.

#30 Stylish Wavy Pixie Bob with Rich Highlights
The curls in this hairstyle provide an energetic and lively feel to the overall look. The highlights are meant to accentuate the movement of the curls. As the hair moves, the highlighted pieces reflect light in different places. This is an effect best seen in person because the details are easily lost in photos. With fine to medium hair, curls provide the most volume and presence, which is something that is almost impossible to achieve otherwise. A lightweight curl cream would help define all the curls without looking too styled. Just scrunch a little through the damp hair, and you’re good to go!

#31 Softly Tousled Pixie Bob with Subtle Waves
I like the softness to this cut. The waves are not overly done, but do add some movement, and keep it dynamic. The layers are soft enough so that the shape is fluid and not rigid. The highlights combine nicely with the base color, so the sum effect is soft dimension with no edgy lines. I would recommend this type of cut to someone who has never gone for a short cut, as it is very easy and practical to wear from day one.

#32 Chic Textured Pixie Bob with Warm Highlights
The warm highlights around the face draw the eye in and give a nice glow to the skin. It looks like the layers are cut with a light hand which allows the movement to be more natural than choppy. This much layering on fine to medium hair gives just enough dimension without compromising any density. The overall shape also gently softens the jawline and adds some interest to the crown of the head on heart shapes. For this much texture, just a touch of mousse worked into the mid-lengths before drying will do.

#33 Choppy Textured Pixie Bob with Rich Undertones
There is a reason for the choppy layers. They help add volume to fine hair that usually falls flat, and the soft waves around the face help soften extremely angular features without masking them. The rich undertone coloring adds warmth and depth, making the whole cut feel more substantial and like the color is giving the hair weight that it doesn’t have. I think this cut and color is very smart, and each is amplifying the other.

#34 Modern Textured Pixie Bob with Effortless Volume
The volume naturally resting on the cut is super satisfying. It truly makes the cut look like it took a lot longer than 20 minutes to round brush it. The lift from the cut makes it look like the layers are working to their full potential. The tousled texture is interesting enough that you could leave off your accessories and feel finished. The medium length gives you just enough coverage to flatter most face shapes, with no specific adjustments required.

#35 Textured Caramel Pixie Bob with Lively Layers
The caramel tones of this cut are warm and charming and are lively without going overboard, and paired with the layered texture, means the light will reflect in a way that creates a dynamic change. The length, resting just above the shoulders, is quite generous for a pixie bob, so if you’re wanting to keep the vibe of a short cut while having a touch of comfort, this is a fantastic choice!. The layered waves add lovely gentleness and I feel it would suit and work with ease for all hair types and ages.

#36 Effortless Tousled Pixie Bob with Textured Layers
Mixing short and mid lengths creates an effortless spent texture. It is actually harder to do than you may think. For wavy hair of medium density, this type of layering is ideal because of how it works with the hair’s natural strengths and allows it to do what it wants, which is always my preference. With just a bit of scrunching and sea salt spray it is all that is needed to achieve this. The face framing is flattering and not over-structured and the whole look gives off the ideal ‘I look good but I didn’t spend all morning getting ready’ kind of vibe.

#37 Chic Textured Pixie Bob with Soft Volume
The different layers allow for a dimensional feel even with fine hair textures. The hair feels nice and the soft waves help to keep the cut from feeling too manufactured. The length is ideal as well and gives a nice free feeling. It isn’t too long and creates a nice change from longer styles. My clients find cuts that can easily transition from season to season without too much maintenance the most practical and this one is perfect for that.

#38 Textured Wavy Pixie Bob with Lively Volume
The waves add buoyancy to the whole cut. With medium to thick hair, this type of texture can be a bit tricky because one needs to remove enough weight for the waves to move, and whoever cut this got the balance spot on. With everything being modern, the jawline length and volume look more natural and less like they’ve been styled. It’s one of those cuts where it just works, no complex explanations, no weird techniques to teach. Most importantly, it’s just good haircutting that lets the texture do the talking.

#39 Textured Wavy Pixie Bob with Rich Chocolate Undertones
I like how warm and pretty this chocolate color looks on the face. The shade is deep enough to be used to refine and polish up a look but is still natural which is less obviously synthetic. The natural wave in the hair means the soft finish will do the styling for you. The overall shape of the hair wins without needing sharp lines so there’s a lot to like about this. It definitely gives the high visual payoff for low effort cut that I’d want for anyone looking to streamline their routine without feeling like they’ve sacrificed anything.

#40 Chic Layered Tousled Pixie Bob with Soft Highlights
Your blended highlights are awesome! They look very good! They compliment your hair very well, giving nice dimensions without using streaky or chunky highlights that can take away from the natural look. On thicker hair that is naturally wavy, the tousled layers really work with the hair, and the length right above the jaw creates a nice flattering frame that isn’t too much. I love how it looks like the cut and color are working together instead of competing for attention.

#41 Textured Asymmetrical Pixie Bob with Warm Caramel Highlights
I appreciate that this cut’s asymmetry adds personality without being too dramatic. I have also had concerns with some asymmetrical cuts as they may look good from only one angle. The warm caramel highlights on the rich base add intriguing depth and draw the eye to the texture. The length is perfect to eliminate the fullness, if it is medium to fine hair, this construction adds fullness where it is most needed and also keeps the shape clean and intentional

#42 Textured Wavy Pixie Bob with Soft Layers
Chin-length cuts are great for this style because they create enough room for the waves to form and not weigh them down. The color and highlights are bright enough to keep the style fresh overall. The layers are soft enough to give a messy look without a lot of effort. Fine hair gives the illusion of more volume and sizes the many underrated victories provided by great haircutting.

#43 Softly Tousled Pixie Bob with Subtle Layers
My favorite part about this haircut is how soft all the layers are. The extensions are not too choppy or textured, and the length difference to create lightness and movement is perfect. The soft highlights keep the color natural and work well for the dimension. The length, being above the shoulders, is also versatile. I can see this looking nice on someone changing from long hair. It is a good cut in the best sense of the word. Good meaning dependable and nice, not boring.

#44 Textured Tousled Pixie Bob with Light Brown Highlights
The light brown highlights are placed so skillfully that they create the illusion of movement in the hair, even when it’s not moving. The length that sits just above the jawline is both practical and flattering. With medium to fine hair, the tousled texture is visually interesting enough on its own, making additional elements unnecessary. This is a smart, fuss-free cut that honors both the hair and the person, which is all one can really hope for.

#45 Textured Wavy Pixie Bob with Soft Highlights
This style is effective due to how the layers bring in movement and volume, and achieving a look like this while maintaining a clean and polished appearance isn’t always easy. The subtle highlights brighten the face and harmonize well with the rest of the texture. The outcome on fine to medium hair will feel and look airy and light without feeling sparse. The length will be very comfortable and easy to wear, the type of hair cut you won’t think about after the first few days because it will simply blend in with your look.

#46 Chic Textured Pixie Bob with Soft Lavender Tones
Lavender is such a nice color! You’ve done it in a way that it doesn’t overwhelm the majority of the look and allows it to be usable for day to day life. The layers and texture compliment the color and give it a place to go when it isn’t pulled back. With fine to medium hair the cut does a good job of creating volume. The waves are youthful which is a plus no matter the age. Fashion shades fade and that is the reality of the color, but the journey from lavender to a soft lived pastel is a process and is really pretty if you allow it to happen.

#47 Textured Wavy Pixie Bob with Subtle Layers
This haircut is layered and gives the appearance of being complex, but the jawline length creates an effect that is simple and easy to maintain. The best part about this style is that it works perfectly with natural waves in your hair; the waves will do the styling for you. A good messy finish is the goal, but not too messy. Just enough to make it look like you did a lot of work. This style is reliable and very versatile, and that is exactly what a lot of different people need.

#48 Textured Tousled Pixie Bob with Natural Movement
What drew me to this cut the most was the effortless movement. A soft wave has been allowed to do what it wants which is a nice change from the typical forced styling. The gentle layers provide soft volume at the crown, and the jawline hitting length is perfect for oval and heart shaped faces. The structure here adds just the right amount of density for finer hair while still keeping it light and easy to manage. This cut would also take highlights well if you wanted to add a contrast, but honestly it’s good just like this.

#49 Chic Tousled Bob with Defined Curls
The curls give this hairstyle a liveliness straight hair cannot match. The warm auburn tones are a great compliment to the skin and the dimension of the curls is enhanced as they reflect different shades of light. For medium to thick hair and a big curl, a length just above the shoulders is a sweet spot where the curl springs up without getting heavy, and the overall shape softens the face’s angles. To keep your curls from getting frizzy throughout the day, try a defining gel on wet hair.

#50 Chic Tousled Pixie Bob with Subtle Dimension
The soft crown texture is my favorite part of this cut because it adds a youthful quality. The subtle highlights through the layers provide just the right amount of dimension to keep the style dynamic without getting busy. The layers create volume in the right spots on fine to medium hair, and the jawline length is flattering for framing. You really are ready to go with just a bit of texturizing spray and a quick tousle. Short cuts often make that promise, but this one really delivers.
