Let’s talk about straight hair. It is often associated with a stigma, particularly one that revolves around it being “boring” or too “easy” to manage. As with straight hair, other people who don’t have it may be wondering, Have you seen what you can do with it? Take one of my clients from last week. She told me that she had been sporting the same look of long, straight hair for as long as she could remember because she couldn’t think of anything to do with it. Well we spent twenty minutes coming up with ideas, and she settled on a sharp dimensional lob. She nearly cried when she saw the final result.
Despite popular opinion, straight hair is, in fact, most high-maintenance hair type. Straight hair shows exactly how much effort has gone into the cut. The angles, layers, and endless lengths are all to be found straight hair. None of the details can hide under the hair. Straight hair is a lot like a good suit, you just feel better with it. If you’re toying with the idea of a big chop, or would simply like some inspiration for your hair, I’m full of ideas and have seen tons of looks that I like. So let’s get into it!

#1: Long Straight Hair with Subtle Layers
This haircut has long, straight layers that add movement and dimension. The model’s thick hair type looks especially luscious, and straight hair smoothly frames almost all face shapes, especially oval and heart shapes. If you want to keep the look, you may want to get a smoothing serum to help with shine and manageability. This haircut is easy to style in lots of different ways, so it’s a great option for all occasions.

#2: Sleek Long Hair with Blunt Bangs
If you want a finished look, long, straight hair with blunt bangs is a great way to go. It works best with straight hair and offers a nice modern clean look. The bangs are a great touch as they highlight your entire face and are great with all face shapes, especially oval and heart shapes. The best part is that this hairstyle needs very little effort as just a flat iron is needed to create the desired look. This hairstyle is great for anyone wanting something pretty and low maintenance. The combination of color and shine takes this hairstyle to the next level.

#3: Sleek Blunt Cut with Face-Framing Layers
This style features a clean blunt shoulder cut, ideal for adding density to fine to medium hair types. Straight hair is complemented beautifully by the natural shine, while soft face framing layers add texture and movement to the style. With a polished look to the finish required with a flat iron, this modern, easy-care style is perfect for those wanting hair that is adaptable enough to suit both casual and more formal looks.

#4: That “I Woke Up This Polished” Long Layer Situation
Your hair will inspire other people in the grocery store to stop you and ask what products you use in it. If it’s long, sleek, and has cute little barely there layers that gives it that perfect movement so it doesn’t look like a curtain, you’re on the right track. The best part about this cut is how it looks super complicated and time consuming while in reality it’s very simple. If you have medium to thick hair, this cut is going to be your best friend. The density of your hair will give a shine that is impossible to fake. Just hit it with a flat iron and a little serum and you’re good to go.

#5: The Brunette “I Mean Business” Layers
I enjoy a nice brunette moment and I am loving this one. The layers look soft and look like they are adding some movement and making the look more expensive. I think this hair type looks just as good in a pony as it does down, which is the ultimate test for a good cut. If you’re gonna use hot tools, make sure to grab a heat protectant so you can keep that shine going strong. Otherwise? Low effort, high reward, my favorite combo.

#6: The “She Definitely Has a Skincare Routine Too” Cut
This look is basically like a little sister to that first look, but something about the way the layers sit here feels a touch more intentional, a little more “I have a dermatologist and a stylist and I see both of them on the reg.” The sleekness on this is WILD and healthy straight hair just reflects light like crazy. With this type of cut I always advise my clients to keep a smoothing serum in their bag because a tiny bit used mid-day on dry hair keeps it looking fresh. Works for literally any occasion too, date night or Tuesday morning Target run, same energy.

#7: That Perfect “Just Below the Shoulders” Length with a Little Somethin’ Extra
Some good lengths to get is a nice medium length. Everything does not need to be super long or a bob, and this is proof. The highlights look extremely natural, and when the sun hits it, it looks like the sun did it. With this cut, fine and medium hair will do so well because it won’t weigh it down. You’ll also be able to style it really easily, and a good smoothing serum with your fingers will do the job.

#8: The Bob That Doesn’t Need to Try Hard
I have to admit that I’m really into bobs that are slightly fuller at the bottom. I don’t mean bouncy or flipped out; I mean that subtle thickness that gives the hair that naturally perfect look. The ends are perfectly cut in layers, and that is what I think a lot of people miss with bobs. It is not only about the length; it is about where the weight sits. This one sits PERFECTLY. The combo of a serum and a flat iron will have people thinking you just stepped out of the salon every day.

#9: Burgundy Long Layers That I’m Still Thinking About
This color deserves a shoutout. The stunning long layered burgundy with some face framing pieces? I gasped. I see A LOT of hair and do not say that lightly. The face framing pieces are really doing their job, pulling focus to the face, but not in an obvious way. Plus, the burgundy color creates so much depth that you almost don’t need the layers for dimension, but you’ve got them anyway and it’s just, chef’s kiss. If you want to go red-adjacent, this is the version I would steer you towards.

#10: The Blunt Bob That Means It
Nothing beats the look of a bob where every hair is perfectly in place with that crisp blunt cut! This one hits just above the shoulders which is the perfect length to tuck behind the ears but still feel long and flexible. The rich deep brown color is warm and not too brassy. The color paired with the straight texture provides a modern look that we’re all wanting right now. This look is best with medium to thick hair since you need enough weight to hold the line.

#11: Blonde Layers That Actually Look Natural
You know what drives me wild? When people get blonde layers and they end up looking stripey. THIS is how you do blonde layers. The flow on these is stunning and the fine to medium density allows for movement without clumping or feeling heavy. Also, a good texturizing spray would make this EVEN MORE amazing. Just a little through the roots and mid-lengths and you’ve got that effortless volume look like you were born with perfect hair. I’m super into this one if you couldn’t tell.

#12: The Long and Subtle “I Didn’t Do Much But It Works” Look
This style is the equivalent of a white t-shirt and some nice jeans. It really works because it doesn’t try to do anything fancy! The subtle layers give the hair a nice flow rather than the risk of it just being a long straight cut, and the movement feels very natural. If you have medium to thick hair and want to feel good about your hair without taking the plunge, this is the style for you. Remember to use a good leave-in conditioner as it will give your hair that healthy and shiny look.

#13: Clean Lines and a Little Light Magic
I love blunt cuts with highlights. The highlights add interest to the frame created by the blunt cut. You want both parts like hanging a painting. The shoulder length is very forgiving as it suits so many different people and it’s that length where you can still throw it up if you need to. All you really need for that polished finish is a round brush and a blow dryer and then you’re out the door.

#14: The Sleek Long Cut That Photographs Like a Dream
When I see this haircut, I can’t help but appreciate its beauty from every angle. The subtle layers give the hair some dimension. It is so different from the long straight hair photos that look ‘amazing’ but the hair actually looks kinda dead and flat. You absolutely need layers like this. Natural shine of the hair is helping a lot too so if you want to achieve this look, get a nourishing serum because that glossy finish is really what does it.

#15 Soft Layers That Feel Like a Hug for Your Face
Some of you may think this is silly but hear me out. When people break bones, and get a cast, who doesn’t think it’s cute and soft to look in the mirror? That is what these soft layers on a shoulder-length bob do! They are soft and not choppy and just great! This haircut is a great option for medium to fine hair. The layers will give the illusion of thicker hair without the need for more. To keep the layers looking fresh, you will need to get trims, but it’s worth it! Looking good is always a good thing.

#16 The A-Line Bob That I Keep Recommending to Everyone
No joke, I have recommended this style to about four clients this month alone. The A-line does this amazing thing that elongates the neck and defines the jaw. And those caramel highlights bring so much life to the hair at a medium density without being “done” if you know what I mean. All I will say is that A-line bobs need their trims because once they grow out just a little, you lose that angle and the whole thing just falls apart. But when it’s fresh? It’s STUNNING!

#17 The Medium Cut That Looks Way More Expensive Than It Is
A clean medium-length cut with some gentle balayage says “I have my life together,” and isn’t that the dream for all of us? Face framing layers here are so soft that they almost melt away, yet they do offer some nice movement around the cheekbones. Now for my real talk moment. Straight hair at this length can show frizz and texture inconsistencies more than you think. So, keeping this looking polished will be a non-negotiable smoothing serum. Overall, I think that this is a modern and smart choice.

#18 The Textured Bob for the Mom Who Still Wants to Look Cool
I’m giving you my honest opinion because I am *that* mom too, and the chin-grazing bob with some highlighting is saying, “I care about my appearance but I have 17 other things to do today.” Bob hairstyles with some texture are great because they look effortless and the highlighted pieces are just enough to prevent the need for extra styling. Realistically, if you have fine hair, this can look flat by lunchtime, especially if you don’t have volumizing product, but with the right volumizing and styling products, this hairstyle is going to have a great payoff in complimenting your effort.

#19 Balayage That Knows When to Stop
I love a subtle balayage. I’m thinking of that time when all my friends were getting thick stripy balayages and I wanted to scream. However, this one is perfect. It adds dimension and the light layering at the ends avoids the flat blunt look that medium length cuts can get. You’ll definitely want to keep up with color touch ups, but the cut is pretty forgiving as it grows.

#20 Warm Highlights on Long Straight Hair, a.k.a. My Happy Place
I could admire straight hair with warm highlights all day. It makes me happy to see how light catches subtle warm highlights at the end of a smooth cut. This style is a little below the shoulders which is a good length, and the highlights are enough so it doesn’t look one dimensional. If you have medium or thick hair the will look great because with this density, those color variations will be very beautiful. Just be careful because straight styles will be damaged more than curly or wavy ones.

#21 The Mid-Length That Makes You Look Like You Just Got Back From Somewhere Warm
I’m getting European vacation vibes from the soft warm balayage and soft layers and I’m not mad at all! The softness of the layers framing the face looks like they just fell into place, which is the ultimate goal and the hardest thing to achieve from a haircut, that effortless look. I always recommend this color because it works so well with so many different skin tones. I think in a few months the balayage will need to be touched up since it can get muddy, but other than that, once you have it, the cut is low maintenance.

#22 The Red Lob That Makes Me Want to Go Red Again
My red phase was about about six years ago, and seeing gorgeous red lobs like this makes me want to do it again. The bright red and caramel undertones give off warmth and are SO flattering, and the straight lob cut keeps it really modern and clean. This looks really good on fine to medium hair because the sleekness is the focus, so you don’t want a lot of volume. Red tones also fade super quickly so I recommend color safe shampoo, and maybe a color depositing treatment to stay vibrant in between appointments.

#23 Long Layers with Warmth That Just Won’t Quit
This haircut looks fantastic especially with the warmer tones throughout, they look like they are your color but a little better. Like someone just cranked the saturation on your natural hair by 15% and suddenly everything looks amazing. The layers add so much movement to the hair, this is important for longer hair because without the layers you could end up with the flat against the body look that nobody wants! This cut looks particularly good on fine to medium hair because it added so much body without needing a ton of product, and be mindful that longer hair does require a little more upkeep. Keeping up with your trims and using a good deep conditioner will make sure it looks just as good at month three as it did on day one!

#24 The Long Layered Cut That Makes You Look 5 Years Younger
I’m not meant to have favorites but… The way these layers are combined is incredible, and the highlights are catching the light in all the right places! It really takes years off, I’ve seen it happen in my chair a hundred times. If you have medium to thick hair, it works super well as the layers help to remove some bulk without losing fullness which is a perfect balance that is really hard to achieve but when you do it’s everything. The highlights are also placed beautifully, they brighten the face and give everything this soft glow which is so lovely.

#25 The Textured Bob That Works Harder Than It Looks
The construction looks simple, but honestly, that just makes it more impressive. Everything from details of the color and subtle texture, construction to placement just sitting above the shoulders are great. The highlights are just enough to give some depth so you don’t look like a solid color blob. The length is quite versatile, and if your hair is fine to medium, this is one of the best options. This will be less work than a lot of layering. But with the internal texture, you don’t have to worry about it going flat. Any bob that’s worth having will need to be regularly trimmed to keep up the shape, and this one is no different.

#26 The Blunt Bob with Bangs-Adjacent Layers That I’m Very Into
Technically these are classified as face-framing layers, but I personally think they give just a hint of bang energy which I think is super fun! The blunt cut gives a clean, sharp, base to the cut and the face-framing layers soften it up so it’s not too harsh. For someone who thinks they want bangs but isn’t ready to go for it, this is a great haircut because you get a similar vibe without the weird grow-out period. If you have finer hair, I would suggest a volumizing mousse before blow-drying to help keep everything from falling flat, especially around the crown of your head.

#27 Caramel Highlights on Long Hair, Done RIGHT
On straight hair, there is certainly a wrong way to do caramel highlights, and then, there’s THIS, which is right. The highlights are woven in so seamlessly that it looks like natural dimension, which is definitely not easy to do. So if this is the kind of look that you’re bringing to your colorist, please make sure that they know what they’re doing. The highlights hitting every single highlight on straight hair means placement is EVERYTHING. A tip I always give my clients with this type of color is to get a nice conditioner, because straight hair shows damage more than other textures, and dry highlighted hair is not cute.

#28 The Copper A-Line That I Wish More People Would Try
Each time I do a copper undertone, people seem surprised at how much it brightens their whole face, and they tell me how nice it looks on them. I love doing copper tones because they get a lot of compliments and, in my opinion, they don’t get enough love. An A-line bob is a great canvas for a copper tone because when the hair is straight, the copper undertone gets to shine. The length is manageable at slightly above shoulder length, and the A-line angle gives it just the right amount of added interest to make it more than just a basic bob. The copper will look great, but it’ll take a little bit of commitment because it’ll fade and you’ll have to keep going to the salon to maintain it. I promise you, this color will be worth all the upkeep!

#29: Warm Highlights with Soft Layers That I Want to Run My Fingers Through
Want to know what I think? I think it is a beautiful combination of softness and warmth and looks so good with that natural glow. It looks SO touchable, and I can just tell that all of the layers are going to keep warmth and shine in the hair. The highlights are really going to move with the hair and catch the light, and that is the whole point of having layered hair with highlights. You want the highlights to peek out, and then disappear then peek out again. It is stunning how you chose to keep the whole shade warmer but lighter. The clients with longer hair always say that it is important to keep the length in order to add movement, and that is what the layers will do. You will need to keep up with the gloss treatments to maintain the look.

#30 The Textured Bob That Looks Different Every Time You Style It
I love this cut because it will never look the same any two days. Some days layers will fall one way and other days they will flip in the opposite direction to how they were the last time you saw the cut. Even layers falling in unintended ways looks great. The face framing layers are cut nicely so that they help improve the look of the cut overall without being an obvious focal point. The classic bob length that looks best is right above the shoulders and this cut is at exactly that length which means that it will have plenty of movement but it will still maintain that sleek and polished bob shape. Regular trims will help keep the style feeling fresh and clean but honestly even when it grows out a little it always looks nice which is the sign of a good cut.

#31 The Blunt Bob That Says “I Know Exactly Who I Am”
I really appreciate the confidence a blunt bob carries. A lot of the time when a client walks in and says, “I want it blunt. I want it clean. I want it to my jaw.” I can already feel the type of energy and motivation they are bringing and I appreciate it a lot. The front curtain face layers are just the right amount of softness to the look to make it not feel too harsh, while still keeping that really deliberate and intentional vibe. I personally like to recommend a shine serum to really get that blunt cut shine that takes the look from, “I just got my hair done,” to “where did you get your hair done?” And that’s the blunt cut glow up! And remember to get your ends trimmed regularly, about every 6 weeks, because blunt cuts will show growth a lot quicker than anything else.

#32 Long and Sleek with Bangs That Actually Behave
How soft are these bangs? There are bangs that just sit on the forehead and look like a helmet and then there are bangs that relax and sweep across the forehead like they don’t care at all and these are definitely the latter. The long sleek hair and soft bangs is a classic look and I’m honestly happy that it never really goes out of fashion. This look is especially nice on oval and heart shaped faces. I will say though, if you don’t like to put in work on your hair everyday, then the straight look might seem like a bit of a chore because you’ll probably be reaching for your flat iron every morning. Seriously, a good heat protectant is essential, like non-negotiable.

#33 The Medium Blunt Cut That Graphic Designers Probably Have
I can’t pinpoint exactly what about this cut gives me that feeling, but I know what I’m feeling. It’s about that clear thin outline framing the face that sits really close to the collar bone, that sort of says, “I work in a creative field and I drink oat milk” and I mean this in the best way possible. The gloss pull is giving life and with the right products, the hair will shine like crazy. If you possess magical strands that fall into the medium to thick category, this is going to be one of those haircuts that will have you absolutely glowing the moment you step out of that salon. This is why and also a big factor for the regular trims, not because they get tangled but because they will lose their impact as the ends get uneven, but when it’s fresh? so good.

#34 The Choppy Bob for People Who Are Bored with Their Hair
Are you tired of the same old boring style every morning? Look no further; we have the perfect solution. You need these haircut choppy layers to set your look apart from the crowd. You’re going to turn heads and get looks from every direction. You’ll leave the salon looking like you made a crazy decision, but don’t worry, it won’t be anything too wild. The ends of your hair will be much more playful and fun to look at, and that’s my personal favorite! These layers are best for people with fine to medium thick hair. If your hair is super thick you will lose a lot of choppy pieces because it will be too layered. There is some maintenance on your end to keep the layers looking good. It would be disappointing if you waited too long between appointments because then your hair would look like a basic bob, and we don’t want to settle for that.

#35 The Silver-Toned Lob for the Modern Cool Girl
I have been getting lots of requests for cool-toned silvers and greys which is really exciting! This blunt lob is super on trend, and the subtle silver highlights make it that much better. The silver highlights add an unexpected pop of dimension to the lob, while the blunt ends add a lot of structure to the style. This look is best for fine to medium hair as we want that blunt line to be super defined. To maintain that sharp look, regular trims every 6 to 8 weeks is required, but since there isn’t a lot of styling that needs to be done, I think it balances out.

#36 Caramel Highlights That Make Medium Hair Look Incredible
These warm tones and dimensions will look great on you and offer a more subtle look. Mid-length highlights show best with a straightened outfit. This looks classy and simple at the same time. This means you don’t need to change your outfit or your everyday hair routine. However, it will give a more sraight and sleeker look. If you don’t have a set routine or straight hair, you will want to with a look like this. With that being said, it is enhanced even more with the straight effect.

#37 The Textured Lob That Keeps Things Interesting
For clients that want a different style, but not too different, I recommend this style. It changes straight hair and adds enough texture and movement to feel fresh without making a drastic change. The layers will create fake movement so it looks like your hair just does that, which is always the goal. The balayage also provides warmth and dimension without being too in your face like, “I JUST GOT MY HAIR COLORED.” This cut will be easy to maintain day to day if you have medium density hair. You’ll want to keep up with your trimming appointments because the ends will start to look messy and not on purpose.

#38 The Textured Bob with Balayage That I’d Give My Best Friend
That I’m complimenting a haircut is something worth noticing. The length is flattering hitting at the collarbone, and the soft layers add so much movement. The layers are not bulky, and the balayage adds the right amount of dimension. This cut can be textured wash and go for straight to wavy hair. Just be prepared for a color touch up because as your hair gets shorter the balayage will grow out and look less intentional.

#39 Long and Polished with Highlights That Glow
It’s likely that you’ve seen this style and thought “her hair looks great!” While you may not be able to articulate exactly what it is that’s so great about it, there are several features that really elevate this look. The hair highlights add amazing dimensions, but are subtle enough to not be too distracting. The length that falls just below the shoulders is perfect, and the straight, sleek finish accentuates the potential of this style. This look is great on medium to thick hair because the highlights look even better on that texture. To really get the most out of this hairstyle, use an anti-frizz serum so the few flyaways don’t detract from the overall polished look, and this style is about as polished as it can be.
