A lot of women feel that layers are protective, and they gradually take layers down because they feel that they have to. By her second appointment, when we really went into pixie cut territory, she looked at herself and said, “Oh, there I am.” I will always remember this comment. A soft pixie cut is not just about going short, it’s not about just going short; it’s about getting rid of everything that doesn’t work for you. With a soft pixie, the distractions are minimal and all the features of the face, the bone structure, and the neck can be appreciated without any obstruction.
A softer pixie cut is not the same as a sculpted pixie cut, and the difference is in the cut and how it is styled. This will suit oval and heart-shaped faces best, along with straight or with a slight wave. It’s a style that will pair well with hoops or statement glasses since there’s nothing else distracting. There is a slight cowlick at the crown that will need extra attention while cutting, such as point cutting and scissor over comb to manage it. It has a graduated crown and some scissor over comb work, and the micro-fringe is short enough to show the forehead but not feel over exposed. This cut suits fine to medium straight best. The crown lift gives a nice, natural volume to the hair in all the right places, and the ear grazing temple pieces also soften the profile beautifully. The trade off is that both the fringe and tapered back show growth pretty quickly, so if you’re looking for something that will need less maintenance, this probably isn’t the cut for you. If you don’t mind the maintenance cycle, this cut definitely provides a nice finished shape.

This sweep looks really nice and clean. The top is a little longer than most pixies here. It’s about two or three inches longer and all directed to one side with a good amount of volume at the crown. I’d go with a number two at the nape and then point cut on top to keep it nice an light.
This cut is best for round to oval faces and straight hair that’s somewhere between fine and medium. It’s likely that strong cowlicks or coarser textures will push the hair in unflattering directions though. Because of the short length, hair regrowth will be become visible very quickly. But while it stays fresh, this cut is really striking!
#12: Platinum Pixie That Plays Well with Glasses
Hair dyed platinum looks sculptural at this length, nearly as if the hair becomes an accessory rather than something managed. This cut is relatively short with a point cut textured top and a soft tapered perimeter that tucks nicely under chunky black frames. She has a small forward cowlick at the crown that I would work with point cutting and some light razor texturizing, rather than trying to flatten it. The color is a level 10 platinum with a violet toner and I would absolutely recommend a bond-builder throughout the process. This is a color that is high reward and high maintenance. You will need frequent toning and then careful upkeep. Glasses can sometimes flatten the side profile with a cut this short, so that may be worth considering depending on your frames.

This color brings me so much joy! The pastels are so pretty! The shadow root really anchors it and keeps it looking more classy than costume. I’m picturing a clean, cropped pixie, maybe an inch or two on top, ear grazing sides, and a tapered nape. The way this style sits on fine to medium straight hair is just so easy. It so beautifully highlights the structure of the face and it looks amazing with bold earrings too. I appreciate that the volume in this style is completely natural. There is no backcombing or product doing the heavy lifting; instead, the volume is created by hidden interior crown layers that ‘lift’ from the structure of the cut itself. And that is honestly the best way to get volume that lasts and doesn’t look forced. The side lengths are ear length, the nape is tapered and the whole thing is softened with point cutting. Warm chestnut tonal layering adds richness but will need a gloss periodically to keep it that vibrant. This style works beautifully on fine to medium density straight hair and oval or heart shaped faces. This is not the style for very coarse or tightly spiraled hair, and you will want a daily texturizing product to avoid a clean look and to attain a more lived-in appearance.

While the color grabs attention (and rightly so), let’s not forget the value of the underlying structure. There’s a crown cowlick that’s been left out on purpose to add some natural lift, and that’s exactly what I would have done. Think low heat and high impact.

Those silvers are going to affect how you layer tho and there’s a subtle crown cowlick so it’s going to need some careful handling. A bit of a crown control is going to be needed to manage the bulk at the crown without losing the shape so we cannot lose shape there. This is one of those cuts that really exposes head shape, so it’s good to have a chat with your stylist about that before going ahead. It’s great on oval or heart faces and for this shape, it holds its shape with very little product.

I keep getting drawn back due to the color again and again. It is a rose-ash gloss which has a cool dusty quality similar to faded photographs and it happens to mask grey very well. This is cut into a short pixie which is about an inch or two on top and tapers to a quarter of an inch at the nape, with a soft crown graduation. The beveled temple fringe shapes the face to emphasize the cheekbones. Lift is created with point cut layers and internal graduation without the need for heavy texturizing. My hair is fine to medium, medium density, and straight. This color is on the more expensive side due to the lightening plus glossing, and of course shorter styling options are more limited at this length, however if you are already committed to short hair and are looking for something that is a little special, this color service is definitely for you.

I love the pixie mullet because it takes care of the most frequent concern I receive about shorter cuts, which is that hair growing out looks awkward. With this style, the length at the nape allows you to grow into a shaggier, more textured shape instead of that awkward mushroom phase. The longer crown is great for volume and texture, the micro bangs will be wispy and soft, and the nape disconnected for some good piece-y movement. The small wave and subtle crown cowlick in her hair will work with the cut to encourage volume in the right places. The hair type is medium fine and straight with slight waves. The crown cowlick clockwise and is naturally giving some lift even without product. This is sheer luck, not skill, and in this case, it is smart to leave it. The fringe can draw attention to any forehead asymmetry, and daily paste is going to be needed to maintain definition. This is not ideal for coarse curls.

The outward flick on this style at the occipital bone really creates a nice effect. The rest of the cut is a short choppy pixie with micro-fringe, a little crown graduation, and point-razor cutting, which creates lift and separation throughout. What I find the most interesting is the benefit of the pronounced crown whorl, as I think it will help the hair seem more elevated and give it some motion, which I would argue would be more difficult to accomplish with someone with a more subtle crown whorl. To me, it feels like with this haircut, she has a cut that is above the ears with a micro fringe, and she also has her crown point cut with little overdirection, and because of that, her hair growth pattern is also going to benefit from this, and I think that is a positive. To me, she has medium fine hair with medium density, and I would say the shape of her face is oval or maybe heart which I feel means that everything is very well balanced. Light razor texturizing is an appropriate finishing technique in my opinion because this is going to grow out fairly quickly. Essentially, because there isn’t a lot of length to absorb the growth, and with hair like this you need a crisp perimeter to maintain the shape, it also means you should plan for more frequent appointments. The most low commitment way to wear this hairstyle is to do it with a low heat hair styling method, and it is a hairstyle that provides instant volume.

I think the reduction in daily styling time definitely makes it worth the effort to maintain the shorter length with more frequent visits. Itu2019s a little difficult to describe the sort of freedom that comes with this length of hair and it can really only be understood fully once experienced.
