You might think that it would take a long time to find a shoulder-length haircut that meets all of your specifications and doesn’t feel like a compromise. One of my clients from last year had just turned 72, and had been wearing the exact same long layered hairstyle, because she was under the impression that going shorter would make her “give up.” I hear that phrase too often, and it always makes me a bit disheartened. We decided to take her to shoulder-length hair and added some soft face framing layers. It was low impact, but she was emotional because it finally felt like her. Most clients looking for a change.
Many are surprised to hear how great that shoulder length hair can be. It provides all the versatility of longer hair, but no the length to drag everything down, which becomes more and more important as hair ages. Shoulder length hair is also recommend if your hair is starting to feel fine and a bit dry due to silvering. If that is the case, you will find yourself fighting less with your hair in the morning. I can’t promise all of these cuts will work for all, but I do believe there is something in this collection for you. Keep scrolling and find what you like.

#1: Golden Amber Waves with a Lightweight Layer Structure
The color really brightens up your entire face. It looks like you’re just always in great lighting! The look is super simple with just shoulder length hair and gentle layers. You want to avoid big, tight, overdone curls. Try to make your hair look like you just did a light scrunch with heat protectant and let it dry most of the way before going in with a blow dryer. If your hair is a lot straighter than mine, you’ll probably want to use a big barrel curling iron to get those curls. I think this cut is great because when the layers are added for volume, it looks good even if you aren’t as thick as you used to be so your hair still looks really healthy. You want hair like this to look just as good on day three as it does on day one right? Well this style absolutely does that.

#2 Silvery Shoulder-Length Layers with Those Perfect Subtle Bangs
This is a stunning effect due to the cut where the layers fall in seamlessly enough to create movement without fine hair becoming wispy, with the bangs being a suggestion, more than a statement. I often explain going silver is not ditching color but opting for a much more high-maintenance hue, as keeping silver fresh and bright is a task. She won’t need to do much major purple shampoo treatments as she is staying a few weeks to avoid brassiness. The overall look is extremely polished while retaining a softness which is not as easily achieved as most people would assume.

#3 A Clean Blunt Bob That Just Sits Right
One of my top choices for hairstyles is a blunt bob. It’s such a clean cut when done right. It sits just right on the shoulders and moves nicely without flipping out. I like that the ends are soft and not severe like I often see with blunt cuts. When cuts go too blunt, they can make you look older in the wrong ways, which is not the goal. This haircut works best on fine to medium hair because it creates an illusion of thickness with the hair being one solid length. No layers which steal your density. But you do need to be honest with yourself about trims. You have to get trims every six weeks or else it will lose it’s shape. This cut is pretty precise so that is the price you pay.

#4 Textured Bob with Layers That Actually Frame Your Face
I filmed an edited version of this last month and one of the clients keeps sending me photos of herself which is the best form of feedback! The layers are not meant to be overly dramatic, just doing the job of quietly opening up space around the cheekbones and jaw so you look more lifted and elongated. If fine hair is your thing, this is going to be your best friend because the texture gives you body where you need it most! A tiny bit of styling cream mixed into damp hair and you’re basically done, maybe five minutes with a dryer if you want to be fancy. The cool tone on this version is gorgeous too, that icy neutral looks fresh on the skin.

#5 Strawberry Blonde Waves That Catch the Light
This color really goes well with this cut! Strawberry blonde on shoulder length waves has a warmth that is perfect for all occasions. It looks good in all types of lighting, even at home. The layered texture gives the right amount of volume without any added bulk which is a must when your hair starts to change. Wavy hairstyles can be a bit of a morning hassle since you have to curl the pieces in the front, but the loose waves mean you don’t have to do that every day. It’s probably the combination of color and movement that makes it special. The lighter strands reflect light and give amazing dimension. This flat color just wouldn’t give you the same effect.

#6 Silver Blunt Cut with Just Enough Softness Around the Face
I’ll be honest, I think the blunt cuts with face framing layers are a bit overdone, but when it looks this good, who am I to complain? It’s all in the finishing touches. The silver is very well done here. It’s not too flat or yellowish; it has that pearlescent finish that people ask if it’s your natural color or not, which is exactly where you want to be. The blunt ends give you thickness that fine hair really benefits from. and the pieces around the face break it up so it doesn’t look like a helmet. Keep up with your trims on this one. A blunt cut with scraggly ends defeats the whole point.

#7 Sleek Silver Straight Cut with Bangs That Whisper
The bangs on this look so delicate that they are practically invisible, and that is exactly how this look achieves it’s goal. I see a lot of ladies who end up getting bangs and then get something far too heavy that closes off their face, but these grazes the forehead and softens everything without concealing too much. The straight and smooth finish is gorgeous if your hair is naturally straight, however, any wave at all and your flat iron will be getting more use than you’d like. A light texturizing spray would be my suggestion here just to keep it from looking too flat against your head so you want sleek, not plastered.

#8 Copper Curls with Bounce to Spare
I appreciate your color choice as it shows confidence. Copper hair at 70 really is a statement, in a good way, as it draws people over to you and makes them wonder why. You have amazing curl definition, and the layers are really good as they keep the shape from getting too triangular, which happens with curly hair when it’s not layered. For the curls, use a good cream to keep them defined without being crunchy. Copper colored hair does require a lot of maintenance because it fades quickly, but fresh copper is totally worth it!

#9 Strawberry Blonde Waves That Age Backwards
The color I want to highlight is warming up the skin without washing it out, which is a line that a lot of blonde shades can’t walk at this age. They can be too ashy and you look tired, too golden and it reads as trying too hard. But this strawberry tone is sitting right in the middle where it just makes you look healthy and rested. The waves are soft and the layers start right around the chin which is smart because that’s where you want the movement, framing the jaw and keeping everything looking lifted. This is a style that would look good air dried with some product or blown out, it goes either way, which makes it genuinely easy to live with.

#10 Warm Blonde Waves with Texture That Moves
I love warm tones more than anything, and this range of lengths is where they truly shine, especially when your skin has lightened over the years as warm tones add something to the face that cooler shades can miss out on. I really like this warm blonde as well because of the dimension; it’s not flat as the waves and their texture really show off the tonal differences. The layers are subtle, minimal and not choppy or obvious, they just let the hair move freely without losing shape. This is the kind of cut that gets better as the weeks go on, it doesn’t have that big styled gap and just always looks like a good amount of effort was put in.

#11 Ash Blonde Rounded Bob That Frames Everything
A rounded bob suits so many people so well. The rounded edges compliment the natural curves of the jaw and neck and gives an overall polished and clean appearance. The ash blonde color is polished without being overly done, and the rounded ends are much better than a 1995 style blowout. We all know the kind of blowout I’m talking about. This shape bob is great for fine hair especially because the back is all one length, and that little extra weight keeps the style from going limp. With a little practice, achieving a good blow dry really just takes a good round brush.

#12 Sleek Blunt Bob with Textured Ends That Keep It Modern
I do this cut all the time but the unique details are what makes it interesting for me. The ends being textured will allow your cut to not look dated and give it a more modern feel. Everything’s shape is blunt and clean, but still gives you that solid line and makes your hair look more full. Because the very ends are point cut, they don’t feel rigid, and add some movement which modernizes it. If your hair is straight, then this is a wash and go cut. Throw on a little gloss treatment every couple of weeks to keep the shine up. Just keep in mind that blunt cuts will show damage more rapidly than layered styles, so if your ends are splitting, a blunt cut will make that very obvious.

#13 Textured Curls That Frame Without Fussing
My eyes are immediately drawn to the curls at the jawline which open up around the face, coincidentally where the layers start. The person who cut this has a lot of skill. These textured curls create an illusion of added volume, which can happen when the right layers are used on finer hair. The shoulder length is crucial here as it allows the curls to sit freely without being weighed down, and if you have even a slight natural wave you are already halfway to this look. The goal with this hairstyle is to have lots of curls, and this is easily achievable with a good diffuser. The trick is to not touch the curls, so once you get the right look just leave them as they are.

#14 Copper Layers That Catch Every Bit of Light
Let’s talk about how stunning this copper color is. Depending on the lighting, the color can range from auburn to a more bright penny, which makes the hair look incredibly vibrant! The face frame has very soft and blended layers. They aren’t chunky or obvious, they just gently pull back the area around her eyes and cheekbones. For fine hair types, this gives a lot of lift and volume without that over-layered look which is where the ends look stringy, and that’s my pet peeve for sure. I think it’s really common when stylists are too scissor happy with layers on fine hair, and then it leaves nothing on the bottom. As for the copper, it will fade because that’s the nature of red tones, so you will need a color-depositing conditioner to stretch the time between color appointments.

#15 Playful Curls That Don’t Take Themselves Too Seriously
She has done an amazing job here, and you can tell how much confidence this look gives her. The curls are just a bit tousled, but that just highlights the look as an intentional choice. The warm color is rich and looks great, but not too much. She looks like she just walked out of the house and looks good without taking 45 minutes to do her hair. The softer layers add volume to the hair without weighing it down and give every curl the opportunity to shine. The framing curls are less done and natural, and let the hair be free. This look requires little effort if you have naturally curly hair, as long as you have the right products to keep your curls bouncy and not crunchy. The added warm color makes the curls look alive instead of a solid color.

#16 Bouncy Curls with Warmth and Body
With true volume, the curls also possess an ideal level of bounciness that shows all the right moisture has been applied because dry curls are sad and lack bounce. The layered cuts are smart; they are graduated so that the shape is kept rounded instead of being wide at the bottom, which is particularly important when carrying any width in the face so that the hair doesn’t echo the same shape. The warm hues blend beautifully with the curl’s different textures. Each curl reflects light in a unique way and together they create a rich gradient effect. This will especially be great for finer hair as it will provide the illusion of the density that you may not have had since your forties, which is a nice thing to have from a haircut.

#17 Silver Blunt Cut with Ends That Have Just a Little Life
The silver here is an excellent cool tone and doesn’t give off an unfinished hair dyeing job vibe. Blunt lengths really do anchor the whole style and give it polish. The ends are textured which I appreciate because it makes the hair look stiffer. There’s actually quite a bit of movement at the bottom, and it makes the whole cut much more relaxed than you’d get with a true blunt line. The shape will maximize what you have if your hair is fine to medium, and you’re not losing any density to layers, but you’re still getting some softness. If you like to look put together with minimal effort in the mornings, this style is great. Just smooth it out with a hair dryer, and you’re good to go.

#18 Silver Layers with Wispy Bangs That Open Up Your Face
Wisp bangs tend to suit some people more than others, but these cuts work best as the bangs are wispy enough to show a small amount of forehead and not look uneven. The lengths also add a lot of layers which means so much movement. Movement is super important when it comes to silver hair, as without movement it can look flat and one-dimensional. The way the hair is sitting down here looks relaxed, and this is typically down to the specific type of cutting. I’d say those bangs will need to be trimmed every three to four weeks, I know it sounds excessive, but letting them grow too long can cause them to part at random angles, and no one wants to be pushing them back and start to wonder why they got bangs in the first place. The whole cut is really flattering, it has a lot of lightness to it, and it doesn’t look super weighed down or heavy, it just kind of floats a little.

#19 Copper Curls with Real Definition
I just want to know what products she uses to keep her curls looking so effortless and so defined. They look amazing! The warmth in her copper shade is also beautiful and difficult to get without looking brassy. If that is the direction you want to go, then just make sure your colorist is clear about that. For medium to thick hair, this length is perfect for curls as it provides enough space for the curls to spring up without getting too short. The texture is totally from the natural volume of the hair, and not from anything added. I think what really makes this look different is the way the curls frame her face. It also helps that the curls vary in size so some are tighter and some are looser, so it looks real instead of looking like a curling iron did all the work.

#20 Warm Copper Bob with Bangs That Soften Everything
I like this style because the bangs do a great job of softening the forehead and drawing attention to the eyes and cheeks without looking like a big curtain. The blunt bob shape is just above the shoulder and is really easy to manage. It won’t flip out at the ends or get stuck in your collar. It will sit clean and neat. The copper color is warm and flattering. It even adds liveliness to the look that something closer to the neutral shade wouldn’t give you. Warm copper tones do need touch ups about every five to six weeks to keep them looking rich. With some mousse in your damp hair before you dry it, you’ve got all the texture and body you need. So don’t overthink it.

#21 Copper Waves with Warmth That Glows
I find the combination of a coppery hair color and gentle waves to be particularly striking. The color of the hair shimmering and shifting with movement is beautiful, and at shoulder length, there’s a lot of movement. The texture of the waves isn’t soft and beachy, but more defined. The waves look as if they were made by wrapping large sections of hair around a big barrel curling iron, and then brushed out to keep it blended. This cut gives good crown volumization with the added face-framing volume and without creating bulk at the ends on medium density hair. The color suits this style a lot. With a more neutral tone at the ends, it wouldn’t have the same warmth, which makes the copper look gorgeous!

#22 Silver Layers with Wispy Bangs and Easy Movement
What I really respond to is the softness of this look, layered soft styling where it is blended so there’s no choppy texture, and the finer wispy bangs so they move with her rather than sit like a block. The silver tones are brightening everything beautifully for her complexion and without being stark. The shoulder length is youthful without trying too hard. For fine to medium hair this layering approach gives dimension and movement without sacrificing the density at the ends, which is where a lot of layered cuts go wrong. Most layered cuts take too much out of the bottom and you’re left with nothing. If your hair is very fine just make sure you’re using a good volumizing shampoo to keep things from falling flat between washes.

#23 Silver Shoulder-Length Layers That Fall Just Right
The hairstyle looks amazing and is built with intention. There is elegant graduated layering that starts at the chin and creates a gorgeous natural taper. For fine hair, this is exactly how volume is created for those who don’t have thick strands. The silver is gorgeous and, in fact, super clean and bright silver is one of the most expensive colors to achieve. If this is your natural growing in, you’re lucky. This style is super low maintenance, with no bangs to keep, no difficult layers that have to be blown out in some specific way, you can simply dry this with a round brush, or you can even let it air dry, and it’s going to fall into that shape because the cut does all the work. Maintenance is limited to trims every six weeks to prevent it from going shapeless and that’s all there is to it!

#24 Layered Shoulder-Length Cut That Just Works
This style shows us that a simpler approach can be just as stunning as something more complicated. She has good layering that gives her volume at the top and movement at the mid-lengths. The subtle layers also help highlight the framing pieces, but they give a more soft touch. What I enjoy about this style on gray hair is that this layering helps to create a tonal variation that is beautiful, even with a single color. Going to different lengths and angles creates dimension so you really don’t have to do much. The soft highlights look understated and modern, and like the gray is meant to be there, which I always like for people in that transition stage.

#25 Polished Shoulder-Length Cut with a Soft Color Melt
Let’s start with the hair color. The roots being darker and the ends being lighter is a smart idea. It looks like the color transition is seamless. This is good color work because the color is subtle, and the cut is pretty blunt but there is some internal layering so the hair doesn’t look flat. The hair looks polished but not stiff. If the hair is straight this will be low maintenance, all that has to be done is wash, and then dry it smooth to make it look like this. It probably won’t take more than 10 minutes. Because the ends are lighter a trim will be needed more often, especially because damage will show quickly. The clean look is worth the low maintenance.

#26 Textured Cut with Soft Bangs and a Lot of Quiet Detail
The care taken in cutting the bangs shows in how they are not straight across They’re a bit longer at the sides so they integrate into the rest of the hair rather than sit on top like a bad wig. The layered texture throughout the length gives body and movement to the cut with the right amount of weight and on fine to medium hair that balance is everything. I think if you have wanted bangs but are nervous about fully committing, this is a great option as these are soft enough that as they grow out you will just have face-framing layers and will never hit that awkward stage. Overall the look is polished but not stiff and she looks like she cares about her appearance but didn’t spend an hour getting ready. Most of my clients are going for that to be honest.

#27 Light Blonde Layers That Keep Things Bright and Easy
This beautiful shade of light blonde hair will give the impression that you just came back from a tropical vacation! It will brighten your complexion, and your eyes and entire face will look more vibrant. The length and layering give the hair great fullness and will add lift and volume to hair that is finer. The way this look softens the area around the cheeks is very natural. However, I want to mention that if your natural color is significantly darker than this shade, you may find it a bit difficult to keep the look fresh as you will have to visit the salon every 4-5 weeks. Roots tend to show a lot at this length. If your starting point is lighter or grayer, the blonde is ideal for almost every occasion, be it grabbing coffee or going to a fancy dinner.

#28 Rich Auburn Waves That Move Like They Mean It
Auburn is a beautiful hair color that looks great with maturing skin compared to trendy blonds or silvers! Auburn hair adds liveliness to the entire face and provides a gorgeous warm glow. These waves are nice and soft and a lot of that comes from good layering. Weight has been removed in the right spots so the hair is free to curl and move as opposed to just hanging there, and that can make a significant difference on medium density hair. Shoulder length hair is ideal in this case because it leaves room for the waves to open up without going stringy at the ends. I will say, if you’re not careful with your products, auburn can shift tones. A sulfate free shampoo is non-negotiable because if you’re not careful, you’ll watch that beautiful richness fade out in a few weeks.

#29 Tawny Waves with Natural Highlights That Look Like Sunlight
This hue feels authentically beachy, like she spent her summers at the ocean and her hair just did this on its own. The appeal of this color is how effortless it looks. The waves are soft and a little messy. It’s definitely not a spiral or even a uniform set of waves. It’s the type of wave you get when you braid your hair when it’s damp and let it dry, or if you wrap a couple of sections around the curling iron. Achieving this style is easy for naturally wavy hair since you’re mostly just enhancing what’s already there. The tawny highlights are brightening around the face, warming up the overall look and adding a lovely glow without looking stripey or dated.

#30 Caramel Layers with Gentle Waves and an Easy Feel
I enjoy working with the Soft Caramel shade because it flatters and complements all skin tones, warm and cool. It also gives hair a healthy and glossy look. I prefer these layers that begin just below the chin and go down because it keeps the volume at the face and lets the tapering be done at the ends. Soft waves help achieve a fresh and youthful appearance. With fine to medium hair, the right mix of layers and texture makes the hair appear more voluminous than it actually is, which is the objective. You achieve the low maintenance look with just a bit of wave spray and a quick pass with the iron, and that’s how it should be.
