28 Fantastic Short Wavy Haircuts That Look Good On Anyone

I want to talk about the wavy short hair trend that seems to be all over the place. I get that *everyone’s* asking for it, but it’s not one specific thing. There’s a huge difference between a wavy lob and a pixie cut. The hair you have will determine the way you should go. One of my clients had been straightening her hair for 15 years because one of her friends in high school said that waves were “messy.” 15 years! I cut off around 4 inches and showed her how to scrunch with just a little bit of product and she started crying in my chair. Waves should not be fixed, they are the personality of the cut, not something to be ignored.

I have gathered a lot of variety for you, and of course not every option will suit your needs, and that is the point. Because some are my favorites, I’ll let you know as we go along, because that is what I’m here for. When you look through, try to think about your hair as it actually is, not what you wish your hair was like, and you’ll end up with something realistic.

Chic Textured Wavy Bob

#1: Textured Wavy Bob That Actually Does Something

What stood out to me for this cut is how effortless it looks while still having great execution to back it up. The length is great for that adjustment, it’s just above the shoulders so it still gives some great swing without having anything that’s going to weigh down the waves. The layering is quiet and not overly done, and that is what makes it read as natural instead of ‘I curled some random sections with a one inch barrel’. If your hair is finer, this is definitely something to take to your stylist. The movement that it creates is doing all the heavy lifting for volume.

Chic Short Wavy Cut with Soft Layers

#2 Silver Wavy Crop That’s Giving Me Life

This silver situation is amazing! I don’t know why people are scared to go gray because it can look this good! The cut is amazing! The layers are soft and are not fighting the wave, they are just letting it do its thing, which is what you want when you start to get that natural texture. This is one of those cuts that you can wash, apply wave cream, scrunch, and go. The shape is better than most short styles, just don’t skip your trims completely of you’ll lose that whole intentional vibe.

Modern Textured Wavy Lob with Subtle Layers

#3 Collarbone-Length Wavy Lob with Sneaky Good Layers

The best haircut to suggest to clients who say “I want to go shorter but I’m scared” is one that is short enough to feel like a change but long enough so you aren’t having 2 am panic attacks. The layers here may not be super obvious, but they are working a lot, particularly the ones that frame the face and catch the light at the cheekbone level. If your waves are the type that go flat by noon, this haircut will change everything for you, especially with a salt spray at the roots before diffusing.

Effortlessly Chic Short Wavy Cut with Layers

#4 Jaw-Length Wavy Cut That Punches Above Its Weight

Honestly, the highlights are doing more than the haircut itself. The highlights accentuate the waves, giving the haircut great depth that a single-process color can never give. For finer hair, this is an excellent option because even on days when your hair isn’t being cooperative in the volume department, you’ll still get a fullness from the color. My styling recommendation is volumizing mousse and a diffuse on medium heat, but if you’d rather air dry and leave it that way, I won’t judge you because it’s forgiving enough.

Charming Soft Wavy Cut with Face-Framing Layers

#5 Shoulder-Length Waves with Layers That Frame Without Trying Too Hard

It’s easy to underestimate how versatile this is. You can blow it out smooth for something polished, or you can let it air dry into that tousled situation, and both versions look completely intentional. The face-framing layers are generous, but not aggressive. They aren’t poking you in the eye, they’re just balancing your whole face out. If your hair leans frizzy (which a lot of wavy hair does), a leave-in conditioner needs to be in your rotation. Moisture is the difference between “beachy” and “neglected.”

Textured Short Wavy Cut with Soft Volume

#6 Short Wavy Cut with the Kind of Volume You Can’t Fake

These cushioned loops at the jawline look good, and I think it’s because whoever did the cut put the shortest layers in the right spot to achieve that lift without the whole thing going poofy. That’s the danger with short, wavy cuts on finer hair: you either get volume or you get a triangle shape, and there’s a very small window between those two outcomes. This one definitely stays on the good side of the window. Not all wave patterns will achieve this look so if the hair has more of a soft bend than a real curl, lower your expectations.

Playful Short Wavy Cut with Subtle Volume

#7 Above-the-Shoulder Wavy Cut for Fine Hair That Doesn’t Look Thin

This haircut definitely goes with the hair rather than over complicating it with layers, cutting and all those types of things. This haircut says confidence and says “I have good hair and good haircut”. If you fine hair and push out your wash days the hair can get stringy with this haircut. Clients with heart shaped faces will find that this haircut will soften the look around the jaw with the waves of the haircut.

Chic Short Wavy Cut with Soft Volume

#8 Wavy Bob with a Quiet Confidence

For this cut, my advice would be to say, “don’t think about it too much.” The charm, here, is in how simple it is. The layers add some movement, while still avoiding that frizz look that so many stylists struggle to achieve. This cut will suit all hair densities, and to be totally honest that’s a huge compliment to my picky nature, but I reckon I can see it suiting about 70% of my clients. The cut will look better after some refreshing every couple of months, but it definitely won’t fall apart when it grows out!

Playful Textured Wavy Cut with Soft Curls

#9 Auburn Wavy Cut with Curls That Have Personality

That is what I’m talking about! I have a weakness for deep auburn hair with a wavy or curly texture. With curls, the dimension is insane. Every curl reflects light differently, creating a multi-toned effect. It looks like you spent $400 on your color when you really didn’t. This picture is obviously for someone with some actual body to their hair, so for the fine-haired folks, this isn’t your reference picture and that’s totally fine. However, if you have the density to carry this off, the move is a curl defining cream on soaking wet hair. Scrunch it in and do not touch it until it is completely dry.

Textured Wavy Cut with Soft Layers

#10 Wavy Layers That Look Like You Woke Up in a French Movie

When people ask me to describe effortless when it comes to haircuts, this is it. The balayage is so subtle that it is sun kissed and not a stark contrast to the base colour. The waves look like she twisted her hair into a damp bun and let it down. I give all my clients that styling trick and I’m glad it’s working so well. The layers are cut perfectly to fall into place. There is no effort in this look and that’s what makes it so exceptional.

Textured Wavy Short Cut with Soft Bangs

#11 Textured Short Cut with Bangs That Actually Work

Every week, I am asked about bangs on wavy hair at least three times, and I always say, “It depends on YOUR waves.” Here we have an example of it working, and as we can see, it works because the bangs are soft and piece-y as opposed to blunt, so they flow with the wave instead of against it. If your waves are more on the chaotic side, bangs can become a full time job of blowdrying and flat-ironing just that one section, which nobody wants. But if your waves behave more like this, soft and consistent, then absolutely go for it.

Chic Textured Wavy Bob with Soft Movement

#12 Silver Wavy Bob That Makes Me Want to Go Gray Tomorrow

Every time I see silver bob this good, I almost want to get in touch with clients who cover their grey hair and tell them “what are we DOING?” I can see the face framing layers and I can tell they are super contoured and mid length so the silver is like flat and uh??? almost verge so luminous that if you styled the hair straight it would totally lose that shiny and silvery look overall. The silver looks so good if you are contemplating going grey, do it.

Chic Textured Wavy Bob with Face-Framing Layers

#13 Wavy Bob with Highlights That Actually Enhance the Cut

Some highlights might look like they’re being wasted on this cut but these are more intentional. These are more concentrated where the wave has the most movement so every time it catches light you get this stunning depth that a solid color would lack. The face framing layers are doing their job too giving a lift to the cheekbones without being so short that they flip out funny when you sleep on them. It’s a really good choice if you want something that will look good in photos and will look great when you’re running errands on a Saturday.

Chic Layered Wavy Bob with Soft Curls

#14 Jawline Bob with Curls That Know What They’re Doing

There’s something about bobs with soft curls that hit at the jawline that just works. Perhaps it’s that with this type of wave, the curls have enough room to form, but not so much length that they get weighed down. A lightweight oil applied to the ends will keep those curls looking hydrated and bouncy without weighing them down. If you’re considering adding balayage to a cut like this, keep it subtle because the curl pattern will give you all the visual interest you need.

Softly Textured Wavy Pixie with Subtle Highlights

#15 Wavy Pixie That Proves Short Hair Can Be Soft

I understand concern about a pixie coming off too harsh or too masculine. This is the cut I show them and look how soft this is. The wave at the top creates movement that you just can’t achieve with a pixie worn straight, and the subtle highlights add an *lit-from-within* quality that I love! The layering around the face softens everything, and that ditches the look of growing out which is a trap a lot of pixie cuts fall into after about 4 weeks. If you have been contemplating going this short, this is the one to take to your stylist!

Textured Short Wavy Cut with Natural Highlights

#16 Wavy Cut with Natural Highlights Doing All the Work

This cut is one of those times when it’s fine to step back and let your hair do its thing. The way the waves reflect the light is amazing and the highlights look really good because they haven’t been damaged by over-processing. The waves are sun-kissed and look thick and healthy. The cut is a wash-and-go style and is ideal for a person with naturally wavy texture. If that’s you, consider yourself fortunate, because this takes very little styling time and gives the appearance that a lot of time was invested in it.

Textured Wavy Bob with Soft Bangs

#17 Wavy Bob with Soft Bangs and a Side of Personality

The bangs here look nice and in the best way possible, remind me of the seventies. They are soft curtain bangs. Instead of heavy bangs, which is what you want with a wavy texture because they move with you instead of sitting there like a helmet. The waves in the rest of the bob help it from looking too ‘done’, and I think that’s the whole point of this style of cut. If you’re going to do this, get a good moisturizing shampoo because wavy bangs that are dried out turn into frizzy bangs, and that’s a whole other look than what we want to achieve here.

Chic Short Wavy Cut with Natural Texture

#18 Natural Texture Wavy Cut That Doesn’t Fight Your Hair

For a haircut to be considered optimal, it must work with what the client has rather than attempt to do otherwise, and this is a cutting philosophy I try to embody with this example. Here, the waves are clearly the hair’s natural pattern; the cut is designed to showcase that pattern rather than cut against it. If your hair is fine and you’ve been trying to style it in ways that are meant for coarse hair, then stop that and consider doing something like this instead. A shine serum will give this the polished finish it needs without weighing anything down.

Softly Textured Wavy Crop with Face-Framing Highlights

#19 Shoulder-Length Wavy Crop That’s Easy Without Being Boring

There is a clear distinction between ‘easy’ and ‘basic,’ and this haircut most certainly falls on the former. It has soft layers that won’t create any weird flippy pieces in a few weeks, and the highlights are designed to look like your natural color and not come across as highlighted. This is the type of cut I would say, ‘You could go to the gym and then to dinner, and nobody would know the difference,’ which may sound like a backhanded compliment, but I assure you, it is the biggest compliment I can give to a haircut. It works all the time and in every scenario.

Charming Soft Wavy Crop with Natural Movement

#20 Wavy Crop with Natural Movement and Zero Fuss

I would say this is one of my top three “default recommendations” for someone coming in asking for a short wavy cut with no specific inspo. The length is appropriate and the waves are enhanced but not overdone, and the overall shape is great for all face shapes. The highlights add the right amount of warmth to keep it from looking flat, especially indoors where the waves can lose their dimension. Those with fine hair may need a little root lifting spray to keep the crown from going flat, but that’s a small price to pay for an otherwise very easy to style cut.

Chic Short Wavy Cut with Textured Volume

#21 Chocolate Wavy Cut with Highlights That Actually Make Sense

It’s the color that’s really stopping me. The way the rich chocolate base is paired with gorgeous warm highlights is so beautifully done it really makes the waves look three dimensional. Most people do not realize how much their color choice impacts the readability of their wave pattern, and here we have a masterclass example of getting it right. The cut itself is solid – good layers, nice movement, flattering length – but it is the color that is taking it from “nice haircut” to “tell me everything about your hair.” And to achieve that, I’d recommend a texturizing paste, especially in the mid-lengths and ends to keep those waves separated and defined.

Playful Curly Wavy Bob with Soft Layers

#22 Curly Wavy Bob for Hair That Has Its Own Agenda

I have the opportunity to style one of my client’s hair, and instead of straightening it to show its beauty, I will be highlighting its natural beauty. When the hair is cut in layers, each ringlet can fully develop which creates lift and movement instead of forming a huge frizzy ‘do. It is actually quite bold to go for a jaw length cut with tighter curls and waves because it can create a lot of volume, but this looks very well balanced. If your hair is naturally like this, thank you for not fighting it. Make sure you keep it moisturized. The base of your entire hair styling routine should be a good deep conditioner that you use once a week, so start there.

Charming Soft Wavy Cut with Natural Movement

#23 Shoulder-Length Waves with Layers That Know Their Place

Most wavy medium-length cuts can be considered uniform, but this style has intentional layering. With layers added in the middle rather than the bottom, this cut creates movement where it’s needed without the poofy appearance that bottom-heavy cuts can create. A cut like this works especially well on medium to thick hair that tends to become triangular. The layers are designed to keep some volume at the top, but with the right amount of bulk leaves it to gravity to hold everything in place. Fine hair can still work with this style; however, it is advisable to have less layering and a more uniform look with only some frame layers cut in at the front.

Textured Wavy Bob with Natural Highlights

#24 Textured Bob Embracing Natural Gray with Zero Apologies

I appreciate the new addition of the gray. The mix of natural tones and darker base hair creates a unique salt-and-pepper look with the waves. The gray will definitely add more dimension. Each bend in the hair will reflect a different shade. The cut is doing what it set out to do. It gives enough structure to look intentional without making a big statement like, “I just left the salon.” For those wanting to grow out their color and embrace the grays, a cut like this with waves is one of the best options to help get through the transition. The waves will help disguise that “demarcation” line that most people find so frustrating during the grow-out phase.

Softly Textured Wavy Bob with Face-Framing Layers

#25 Golden-Toned Wavy Bob That Warms Up Everything

This bob haircut with warm golden highlights is beautiful with the client’s skin tone, and that’s the level of detail I wish more people considered when selecting a hair color. The haircut is super classic with some face-framing layers and a straight across base that’s shoulder length. It’s nothing new, but the warm color and wavy hair adds a a level of glow to the overall look that is really nice and special. I’ve done this haircut on hundreds of people and every single time, when the skin tone highlights are right, the clients say, “I look healthier,” which is the best compliment because it means the color is perfect. If you have cooler skin tones, don’t do this color. Make sure your stylist finds the right warmth for you.

Textured Short Wavy Cut with Side-Swept Volume

#26 Side-Swept Wavy Cut with Volume in All the Right Spots

I love added volume at the crown and the asymmetrical flattering look when hair is waved to one side. For this hair length, I recommend velcro rollers to achieve this texture and volume at the crown for that lift to last all day. It literally takes 5 minutes or less to roll your hair and I think it’s a tool that everyone should have in their arsenal. This type of lift is an absolute must. I also think the highlights are super well-placed and help to really show the contrast in the areas with volume.

Chic Softly Textured Wavy Bob

#27 Softly Waved Bob with Balayage That Earns Its Keep

While some balayages may appear as uneven streaks across someone’s head, this is different. It has an amazing blend with the base color, and the way it looks like it naturally grew from the client’s head is amazing. For a wavy texture, a good balayage design is unrivaled. The waves provide natural breaks which allow the color to blend seamlessly and look more realistic. The cut is simple and easy, just shoulder length with some soft layers. This was the best option since the color and texture are more than enough. Sometimes not doing too much is a stylist’s best decision.

Modern Short Wavy Cut with Subtle Layers

#28 Jaw-Length Wavy Cut with Layers That Frame Beautifully

I like this part the most. I like the detail on the layering that is cut to frame the face at the cheekbone level, That’s the detail that turns a good haircut into a great one. The jawline length works for this waviness, because it’s short enough to keep the waves active without stretching out under their own weight. If your waves tend to loosen as your hair gets longer, this length will probably bring back the curl definition you forgot you had. You’ll be happy to see the cut every time you see your reflection and honestly that’s the whole point.
