A woman in her sixties said that she has been growing her hair for the last two years because she thought that having short hair would make her look like she has given up. I do hear this often and it does break my heart a little because it’s quite the opposite. In my experience, the most alive and most at ease women, are the ones who realize that not having hair actually brings them more. More structure, more movement, and more of their face in the way it should be.
What I’ve seen over the years is that for women over 60, going shorter is not about following a rule or playing it safe. It’s about finding the hairstyle that helps you stop fussing and really start living. There are some fantastic possibilities to consider. From soft hairstyles to some with a little attitude, and others that’ll get you compliments from your friends before you even sit down at the table. That’s the sweet spot! I have put together 15 of my favorite hairstyles and I’ll give you my honest reviews on each one.

#1: A Clean Blunt Bob That Still Feels Easy
I like how this cut looks intentional, but still not rigid. There is structure in the blunt line, but the softer face framing layers add a more easy going look. On straight hair, this bob is practically self styling with just a round brush and five minutes. You’ll get tons of compliments with this cut for hair that just needs a wash and dry to look amazing.

#2 Frosted Pixie with Just Enough Texture
The soft frosted look will help your hair catch the light and brighten the overall look of the cut. If you are already planning to go lighter, I would recommend trying a soft frost. It helps to make the look more intentional rather than like you are trying to fight it. I would suggest having a good purple shampoo to prevent your hair from getting warmer in between appointments.

#3 A Lob with Layers That Actually Do Something
While I understand that many women reach this length and feel a bit lost, there is a lot of merit to the layering here. The face framing pieces give it a purpose so it doesn’t just sit there. For those of you who have finer hair, this layering technique will give you the illusion of more fullness without sacrificing too much volume. I recommend that you get your ends cleaned up every six to seven weeks to maintain the shape of the style.

#4 Short Pixie with Volume That Doesn’t Try Too Hard
This haircut totally gives an effortless chic vibe. You don’t have to put much thought into it, and it even looks like you did some styling! The layers add body, and the hair looks good in a don’t care type of way. I think this style would mostly work on hair that just moves naturally/more. Coarse hair might be a little resistant to the style.

#5 Ash Blonde Layers Sitting Just Right
I really love the ash tone on this. The best part is it does not look like it is trying to be twenty years younger. It is just a nice blonde that looks clean. The layers are thin enough to give it some movement without making it look thin on the ends. If you decide to do this, you have to be honest with your colorist about how regular you are with getting your hair done, because the ash tones can fade and look warm before your next visit.

#6 Silver Bob with Movement Built In
I really like the subtle and quiet elegance that the cut shows. Nothing about the cut is showy. There are no layers trying to prove anything: the cut is just good. The silver layers are intentional and add movement to the hair rather than having it just sit there. If you are thinking about coloring your hair and letting your natural gray show, this would be a good option as it gives the transition some structure to lean on.

#7 A Warm Auburn Pixie with Bangs That Have Personality
The first thing that caught my attention was the color. The warm auburn shade against the skin is so lively. The bangs are layered and cut so that it feels a bit playful, but not so much that it will be a challenge to maintain. This cut is perfect for someone who wants to make a really bold statement but still wants to be able to do their hair in ten minutes. The cut is going to need regular maintenance though… every four to five weeks because pixies grow out really fast and lose their shape quickly.

#8 Silver Layers with a Polished Feel
I can see the gray shades on this one. It has a flat silver, but the other colors have depth and make it less plain. The layers look soft and a bit intentional in a way that has movement. If you have time and patience for some round brush work and blow drying, this will pay off. Of course, without this step it is still nice, just a little less polished.

#9 Gray Bob with Highlights That Add Dimension
This is a great haircut and the best type because of its versatility. The light highlights throughout the gray work to keep the cut bright and stop it from looking washed out. Gray can easily wash out in indoor lighting but these highlights work to avoid this. The length is great and the texture makes it even more interesting. I could see this on many different women and it would work every time for slightly different reasons.

#10 Short Bob with Bangs That Soften Everything
The best part about these bangs is that they provide framing without hiding. Since these bangs are so soft, they avoid the harsh lines that some bangs create. Plus, they blend into the bob beautifully. I will say that if you’ve never had bangs before, they do require some commitment since you will be trimming them more than the rest of the cut. Most likely every three weeks to maintain the look. However, for the right person, that tradeoff is definitely worth it. Bangs also significantly alter the overall look of your face.

#11 A Chin-Length Silver Bob That Feels Effortless
This color is incredible! The shine is amazing, and the multidimensional color makes it look much better than flat, single-process color. The elegant look of the chin-length cut is super versatile and can be worn in a younger, more fun style or more sophisticated. What makes this cut unique is the effortless look it gives, and the clean layering is what really does it. It looks so laid-back that people might think you just rolled out of bed and didn’t even touch it!

#12 Warm Curly Cut with Real Bounce
If you have any natural curl or wave, the warm highlights will bring energy to your face, and will look soft and defined because the stylist really knew what they were doing. If you apply a good curl defining cream to damp hair and use a low heat diffuser afterwards, you might get a similar result. I have seen a pattern where women over 60 with curly hair have their hair straightened, but honestly they just need to find the right cut and the right products.

#13 Curly Bob with Bangs That Really Work
I won’t lie, curly bangs are not the easiest choice. They can shrink up a lot shorter than you’d like, plus if you live in a humid climate, get ready for them to change A LOT throughout the day. That being said, when bangs are cut well like in the photo, they can be super easy to wear. The texture created in this bob provides all the volume and fullness finer hair can lack, so you’ll want to use your diffuser or curling wand to create this look on purpose. All in all this style is super fun and playful. Not everyone will pull it off, but it can really shine on the right person.

#14 Tousled Warm Bob with a Side Sweep
I think the hairstyle is classy, but not over the top for a formal event. I like the warmth of the color, it goes with her and the natural lived in look is better than a very blunt and obvious color job. It’s more flattering than what I think most people were expecting. I also like the forgiving texture of the tousled look. It means you don’t have to do precise styling every morning for it to look good, which is great. I think this is the kind of cut that actually looks good and better as it grows out between appointments, and that’s probably the most underrated thing a haircut can do.

#15 Layered Cut with Highlights That Keep Things Interesting
You can trust this haircut. It’s not boring, just there are cuts that work, and you don’t have to think about it too much. The color is more dimensional and not flat because the highlights break it up. The layers offer shape without having to style on the reg. If you want to look put together but don’t want hair to be the focus of your morning, this is a great option.
