A woman over 60 sporting a great short haircut emanates self-assurance. She has managed to figure out what people think and for once is doing what she wants. A few years ago, I had the privilege of working with a retired professor who had the same hair length for decades. She expressed the desire to feel like herself again, and not the version she had been keeping up with out of some sense of obligation. We decided to get some bangs. When she looked at her reflection for the first time, I felt I had rediscovered my mission. It felt to her like she had just removed a coat that she had been carrying but didn’t even realize it was there.nnFrom what I have seen, and short hair on women over 60 is not an act of desperation to try and look younger, but rather a sign that this woman has finally discovered a cut that is in alignment with her current bone structure and hair texture, and overall attitude. The haircuts I plan to show you are exactly what describes these qualities. Some are softer and some are edgier. I have created all of these looks on my clients and they have all walked out feeling like a million bucks. Let’s go!

#1: Soft-Layered Pixie That Just Falls Right
Some of the cuts create the illusion of a mirror behind the person, and then they fall silent for a moment. Candid moments like these feel super authentic, like it was meant to be that way. The layers are structured well enough to offer some definition around the jaw. For finer to medium hair, you get tons of volume without any extra effort. The lightening is also done to brighten and keep everything super fresh. To be honest, you could get away without product here, but maybe a little texturizing spray, if you want to enhance it, would be a good idea.

#2 Cool Silver Pixie with Just Enough Movement
This cut is great for those wanting to embrace silver hair and have it look intentional and almost glowing! The layerng is soft and not too choppy so it lifts the hair without going overboard. The cool tone brightens the complexion and does great things. And that length is about as low maintenance as it gets for morning routines, which I know is a huge plus. You will want to come in pretty regularly to maintain the shape because once a pixie starts growing out uneven, it loses that polished look really quickly!

#3 Tawny Textured Crop for the Wash-and-Go Crowd
Check out this style that plays with volume! This tawny textured crop is fabulous for fine hair, featuring layers that create maximum volume. The length is perfect for a wash-and-go method which is dreamy at any age. Textured and lively looks might take some extra styling but is totally worth it those extra minutes in the morning! All you need to do is put some lightweight mousse in damp hair, tussle it around and you’re all set! If you have thick hair, it might not lay as easily.

#4 Tapered Silver Pixie with That Long, Sweeping Bang
The bangs are the nicest part of this look. They have a nice personality, as they are not too over the top, but help create some nice frameing around the face, while the rest of the hair is kept clean and tapered. Worn this way, silver hair also kept a nice, soft, natural glow and is low maintenance root touch ups and coloring, which is a huge plus. This is a really nice cut for fine hair, as the shape gives an illusion of volume. Just remember that the bangs are going to require a bit more maintenance as they are the first part to lose their shape. Once that happens, it can change the whole haircut, so keep on top of trim appointments.

#5 Tousled Bob with a Little Depth from Highlights
This style suggests that you have amazing hair (without putting in the effort) which is not entirely true. The layers give added volume, and the highlights give added thickness and dimension without being too distracting. It’s a great option if you like to keep your hair on the longer side but want something new and easier to style. Plan on at least five minutes for wash and go type of styling, and make sure to use a color-safe shampoo to maintain your highlights. Blow dry and scrunch to add volume. This will help a lot!

#6 Silver Textured Pixie with Real Structure
I’ve used this style on many clients with silver hair, and it always looks great! The sides are short and there’s enough length on top that can be styled sleek and polished or a bit more piece-y and casual. This is really great for fine hair because of the layers that help to redistribute the volume making it look a lot thicker. This is great for all face shapes as the proportions are quite balanced. A little bit of texture paste through the fingers and onto the top and you’re good to go!

#7 Caramel Tousled Bob with Volume at the Roots
The lift at the roots is what makes this haircut really great. If your hair has been getting finer over the years and you have been missing that feeling of fullness, this is a good way to get it back. The length is just above the shoulders, this is that sweet spot where it is short enough to be easy but long enough to feel like you have enough hair to move around. The warm caramel color is flattering on a number of different skin tones. It gives a soft glow that looks healthy and alive. I won’t pretend that the tousled texture maintains itself, because you will have to style it, and the color will need refreshing to keep it from going flat.

#8 Silver A-Line Bob with Some Edge to It
I like this style. It offers a really nice clean line because it graduates from back to front, and the ends being textured so it doesn’t become too harsh. It can be really tough to strike a combination of being sophisticated and interesting, and this one does it! The silver here is beautiful, really lovely and captures the light well with a sort of ethereal glow. If you have finer to medium hair this is a good style for you. It’s low maintenance, though you may want to use a light hold product to keep the shape you want. This looks like it took a lot of effort because of how it’s cut, but it really looks great!

#9 Chestnut Waves with Bangs That Frame Everything
It is a good and smart choice as these bangs soften and frame your face and make it look nice unlike other styles that are more harsh and unflattering. The added body is great for this style that might otherwise be lacking from finer or thinning hair. It’s warm chestnut hue. It really warms you up and I love that with this style. I’ll be honest this looks like it will take more daily maintenance than other shorter styles. It’s a more intentional style than one you’d just let air dry. If you prefer to round brush while blow drying, then it is worth it for the final look.

#10 Feathered Silver Crop, Clean and Light
Feathering adds extra volume to fine hair, and the short sides make the look clean and polished. I like that this gives the option to keep it sleek one day and then switch it to a more textured look the next day. The only thing to note with really bright silver hair is that over time it can start looking yellow. However, it can be kept looking fresh with a clarifying purple shampoo used once a week. I think this style does a great job of softening the look.

#11 Feathered Silver Pixie with Natural Texture
The crown layering in this style is nice because it provides fullness in the right spots without being too poofy. This is the sort of cut that goes with the hair’s natural movement so it will need very little styling to achieve that nice, effortless look. The stacked layers here cover the thinning on top issue very well, and although it is a short cut, it still has lots of personality and a softness to it. Because of the details that really make these types of cuts special, you will lose the detail quickly so you will need to come in often to keep the shape.

#12 Chestnut Layered Crop with Some Warmth
The haircut is nice and has movement. The layers create bounce and volume at the crown. The chestnut color will warm and brighten the skin tone. The length is practical and the layers make it styled and easy to manage. The root lift will be flattering for round face shapes. The color will need upkeep to stay vibrant, but the cut will be low maintenance as it grows.

#13 Refined Silver Crop with Delicate Feathering
This cut is beautifully understated. It is neat and very cohesive. The thinning and feathering add the perfect amount of dimension to avoid flatness, and the layering around the face frames and enhances the bone structure. Personally, I think this kind of cut looks best when the fight with colour is abandoned to let the silver shine through. With that, you will probably want to get a product for silver hair to maintain the brightness and overall health of the tone, but other than that, this is as low maintenance as stylish cuts get.

#14 Auburn Tapered Pixie with Life on Top
The shade of auburn is warm and alive and does beautiful things for the complexion. The cut is sharp: clean on the sides and tapered on the top to create volume and energy. This works especially good for thin to medium hair, as the differing lengths in layers create fullness, without adding weight. It is a low-maintenance style in terms of daily effort, but you do need to keep up with trims because the tapered shape softens pretty quickly as it grows. A small sacrifice for a style that looks this good.

#15 Silver Bob with Highlighted Contours
This bob cut is gorgeous! Her chin-length cut highlights placed to contour the face soften areas where softness is needed and add definition where it matters. The fine texture catches the light which creates a lovely subtle shimmer to the hair. People will notice that you look good, but they won’t be able to figure out what it is. The cut is going to be low maintenance, and silver highlights are easy to care for as long as the right products are used.

#16 Golden Layered Bob with Bangs That Soften Everything
The side-swept bangs create more dimension than a typical layered bob. They help to soften the forehead while keeping the eye as the main focal point. They also create the perfect blend and seamless integration with the layers. For anyone wishing to boost their warmth and enhance their skin tone, a lovely golden colour is most appropriate. This gold colour is particularly suited to fine and medium hair. Golden tones create the illusion of fullness and body, where it is often lacking in fine hair. This style will look stunning as it is on oval or heart-shaped faces. On rounder faces, I would soften the layering a bit. I would extend the length around the jaw to create a more balanced structural look. Overall the structure of this cut is excellent. It’s also very low-maintenance, and will continue to look great between appointments.
