15 Chic Short Grey Hair Styles With Modern Attitude

Some women do not like the idea of silver hair, but short hair has a silver lining. It is a positive thing and instead of thinking of it as something to deal with, it can be celebrated. Many of my previous customers have gone from struggling with grey hair and having to dye their hair every two weeks to letting the dye grow out, and the ultimate transformation came in the form of a haircut. I enjoy physical transformations when hundreds of my customers start with a slouch and then gain the confidence to stare at themselves in the mirror.

One of my longest customers waited more than 25 years to have her hair lightened to a medium brown so that we could finally start to transition her. As soon as she reached that point, we put in some gradual highlights and lowlights, and she said, “just cut it, I’m ready.” When I turned the chair around she gasped as she revealed so much beautiful silver hair. This is why I do this. Hair that has begun to show silver or is fully silver will give you confidence to show it off, not to cover it up.

Sophisticated Silver Textured Crop with Defined Contours

#1: Okay THIS Silver Textured Crop Is Giving Me Everything

I adore this cut!! If you came to my chair, I would be so excited if we got to do this, It would be amazing! The texturing is in this cut is so nice! It’s got lots of movement and dimension without looking like someone went over board with the thinning shears. And how it hugs the jawline. The contouring on that side is doing some seriously nice work! It really makes your bone structure POP. This is going to be your best friend if you have fine to medium hair because the volume from the added layers will be so much easier to handle! This isn’t a let it grow out for three months type of cut so you will have to come see me a lot to keep all those layers sharp.

#2: This Tousled Grey Bob Has That “I Woke Up Like This” Energy

I LOVE a great tousled bob and this one is nailing it. It looks wild, like she just ran her fingers through it and walked out the door. But there is actually smart cutting going on with the subtle layers that build body and movement. The color is what really gets me though the gray is blended with these natural undertones that catch the light in such a pretty and dimensional way. It looks flat with gray which is honestly the number one thing people worry about with it. A little light styling mousse and you are literally done, out the door, looking incredible. This is one of those cuts where people will ask you “who does your hair?” And that is my favorite compliment to hear secondhand.

Edgy Textured Pixie Cut for Silver Hair

#3: If You Want Edgy But Still YOU, This Silver Pixie Is It

The pixie haircut shows the right amount of edge and professionalism, and it looks effortless. The textured layers offer volume on top, and the tapered sides and back are very clean and modern. The silver tone combined with all that texture looks amazing and contemporary. One of the downfalls of such a great cut is how often you’ll have to come back to my chair to keep that silhouette sharp. It will be lost the moment your hair grows out even just a little. Honestly, every time? It’s worth it.

#4: This Layered Silver Bob Is Quietly Doing A LOT of Work

A simple design does not mean a simple cut. This one frames the face beautifully because it is placed exactly at the jawline. Also, I’m nerding out over the light darkenings around the crown that create some depth and make the hair look denser. This is the cut for you if you have thinning hair and want something polished that is going to require minimal upkeep. Just keep up with your trims to make sure the lines stay clean.

#5: These Face-Framing Highlights on Silver Hair Are SO Smart

The color and cutting technique used here really work together. The lighter pieces near the face? They create a nice contouring effect on the cheekbones and it’s like you’re wearing a no-makeup look. However, hair that is finer gets more volume and wiggles due to body without all the heaviness. Honestly, if you are going from darker colour shades to grey, you might have to come in for toning more often. But the cut? You will spend MINUTES styling it in the morning.

Voluminous Silver Pixie with Textured Waves

#6: Textured Silver Pixie with Waves That Actually Hold

Adding waves to a pixie cut really takes it to another level, and this one is doing it beautifully. The asymmetrical layers soften the face in a flattering way, and the texture allows for volume without much product. If you have fine to medium hair and are worried about it being flat, this is the kind of cut that actually works WITH your hair instead of against it. The only downside is that you will have to get your hair trimmed regularly to keep the waves from looking “grown out weird.” There is a difference, and we’ve all been there.

#7: Feathered Silver Pixie That Your Friends Are Going to Ask About

I love this pixie style! Feathers really add some height to the crown, and I think this style would be good for women who have some thinning at the crown. The tapered neck also showcases that this style is clean and intentional. You won’t have to go to the salon for color, and your gray is growing out fabulously. This style looks great on rounder face shapes especially as it completely opens up the face. With this style, your maintenance will be minimal outside of trims to keep the shape of the style tight.

#8: This Natural Textured Silver Pixie Has Such Good Energy

Have you decided to let your natural grey come in and don’t know what to do? CHECK THIS OUT. The soft taper keeps the sides neat while leaving plenty of stunning volume on top. The natural wave gives an effortless look that curling iron waves will never replicate. It will show off your cheekbones beautifully and it will look like you have amazing hair naturally which you do. If your hair is wavy or curly, you might have to style it a little more to keep it from going wild, but that is a small sacrifice for looking this good.

Chic Salt-and-Pepper Wave with Side-Swept Bangs

#9: Salt-and-Pepper Waves with the Prettiest Side-Swept Bangs

I love this look with the grey hair. It makes me want to show it off to all my clients who are thinking about going natural. The wispy bangs are nice and I think they really suit the cut. The hair has great wave and volume. This is great if the hair is thin but, if you live in a humid area, you might struggle with the waves. A little light mousse and some hairspray should do the trick to keep it under control. If you want to, that is. You’re golden. Oh, I mean silver.

#10: Soft Textured Silver Crop That Frames Your Face Like a Dream

The cut’s textured edges are working some magic around the face; it’s almost as if the hair is designed to highlight her cheekbones. And it very well could be, as a good stylist takes that into account! This is one of those shorter styles that will be a dream come true because you will literally be ready to leave in less than five minutes every morning. It is ideal for fine to medium straight to wavy hair as the layers add just the right amount of movement to keep it fun. You may need to stay on top of your maintenance trims to keep the edges looking good, but it’s a worthy payoff to a cut that looks like you put in a lot of effort, but you didn’t!

Stylish Silver Swirls with Dynamic Layering

#11: These Silver Swirls Have the Coolest Movement I’ve Seen in a While

It is important to mention the subtle undercut around the ear – this is such a cool detail. It removes weight just enough to allow for some beautiful flowing movement with the rest of the hair, without creating a ‘thin’ look. And the swirly layers? They reflect light in such a way where even grey hair looks luminous. If you’ve got thicker hair and have always thought short hair cuts looked way too bulky on you, then this is for you. It skims just above the shoulders so you retain some length, particularly to make a big change feel a bit more manageable. Just remember that those ends being lighter and wispier will need to be trimmed regularly to keep them looking good.

Contemporary Silver Rounded Bob with Weighted Outline

#12: This Rounded Silver Bob Is Giving Very Chic, Very Polished

The shape is so satisfying. The outline is clean and the shape is weighted. It’s almost architectural. The darker roots transition to silver tips seamlessly. The color gives it dimension that is effortless. The subtle layering adds texture without losing volume. This is HUGE for grey hair because it can lay flat and lifeless if you don’t cut it right so it’s great that it can be cut like this. If you plan on coming in every five to six weeks to maintain that silhouette, you will look this polished all year round.

#13: Easy Breezy Silver Crop for When You Want Zero Fuss

This is one of those cuts that you can just tell she doesn’t spend more than a couple minutes on her hair yet it still looks amazing which is honestly the goal right? The tapered edges soften the frame of the face and the angled cutting technique is great if you have a rounder face shape because it creates a nice lengthening effect. The grey with maturing skin tones looks very elegant and natural here, there’s no trying happening here, it just IS. Short crops like this do require more regular cuts to maintain the shape, but it saves you so much time every morning that it evens out.

Chic Spiky Silver Pixie with Lilac Undertones

#14: Spiky Silver Pixie with Lilac Undertones, Yes You Read That Right

Let’s all give a round of applause for those lilac undertones! Adding just the slightest touch of color to silver hair is something I relish and the results are clear. The undertones are not a bold purple, but a more cool tone wash that enhances the silver. The spikiness creates height and volume, and is super low maintenance. We’re talking a bit of texturizing paste and finger combed. You’re going to need trims quite regularly to keep the post-apocalyptic look off those spiky bits and if you want a look that means business with no daily maintenance, this is it!

#15: Soft Silver Waves That Let Your Natural Texture Do the Talking

The haircut I suggest for clients who want to look sophisticated while also wanting to stop fighting with the texture of their hair is the one above! Why fight it? Those waves are all her, the cut simply makes what is already there better. The layers increase volume for fine hair without the obvious look of “layering” if you know what I mean. It’s invisible. And that silver hair is so elegant and intentional. This is as good as it gets for low maintenance hairstyles. You will want to have regular shaping appointments to maintain defined waves so they don’t end up shapeless, but you actually look like you put in a lot of effort when really, you are just being efficient.
