Somewhere around the third or fourth time a client showed me a Pinterest board full of what I can only describe as “hair that looks like it belongs on a woman walking through Copenhagen in a wool coat,” I realized this was becoming a thing, and not just a passing mood board trend. Scandi layers are genuinely the cut people keep circling back to, and I think the reason is almost annoyingly simple: they make hair look like it has more of everything, more movement, more body, more dimension, without actually looking like you tried that hard. The layering is softer than what we’re used to seeing with traditional American layering, which tends to be more aggressive and starts higher up. These sit lower, blend more gradually, and the whole shape of the cut feels rounder somehow, like the hair just naturally falls into place even though it definitely took some thought to get there.
I had a client a few months ago who came in after growing out a pretty blunt lob for over a year, and she was so frustrated because it just hung there, no life in it at all. She didn’t want anything dramatic, didn’t want to lose length, she just wanted it to look like she had good hair again. She looks really happy and I totally understand why, it’s a nice haircut. The platinum color is bright, but not too icy. It looks warm and the layers flip out and create a really fun and bouncy look. I decided to finish with this one because it is a side by side that really captures what this cut can do for someone. The before is still nice hair, but it’s long and shapeless and kind of heavy looking, just falling straight down with no direction. The after is so much better! There are layers that begin at the jaw line and create a beautiful frame around her face, the color looks so much better with some brighter pieces through the front, and the whole look has movement and life. This is the type of result I think most people envision when asking for Scandi layers, and it’s an honest example of the difference a good cut and well-placed layers can create.

I know some people don’t like lots of curls or waves in their hair so I think this is a good example of minimalistic Scandi layers. Here we see some soft layers that frame the face and fall back from the cheekbone, and some slight graduation at the ends to avoid a blunt look. The sandy blonde color is warm and natural. It looks like this might be the color she had as a kid and simply kept it going. It’s a really pretty and simple look.
#5: Peach-Toned Blonde with Vintage Curled Layers
The blonde hair and tight vintage style curls at the ends have a certain peachy warmth that really appeals to me. The lower curls leave the top layer smooth and flat against the head. This is a particular style and probably not what one would wear for errands, but as a reference for how one could dress-up Scandi layers, this is really beautiful. The tighter curl pattern here was probably achieved with a smaller barrel iron, about 1 inch, and then brushed out a bit to loosen the curls.

Changing the tone of your hair with a side part creates a lot of movement with the hair and makes the cut look completely different by focusing all the weight to that side of the head and creating a bold sweep of hair across the forehead. The bright champagne blonde color is very stunning and this hairstyle has a lot of movement because the waves are large and soft. With this style it is very important to use some flexible hold hairspray to keep the waves in place because soft wave bends tend to drop out and lose shape really easily.

Here’s a clean, no frills version that lots of people will probably end up wearing most days, even if the wavier styles are the ones that grab their attention on insta. The layers here are non existent, and the hair is kept incredibly straight with a very slight bump inward at the tips, which achieves a nice polished effect. The dark blonde with a touch warmer root is the sort of colour that can go months and months between appointments and not look overly grown out, which is a huge selling feature for most people.

The shape is very satisfying, especially how all the layers create a rounded silhouette that flicks out at the bottom. It’s a really nice length cut that sits between the chin and shoulders and the warm medium blonde is really natural and a lot more low maintenance than some of the lighter options here. If you like to use a volumizing mousse to blow dry your hair, this is the type of cut that will really show that.
#9: Honey Blonde Curtain Curls
The curls at the ends of this haircut are larger and more defined than most of the looks in this post which pushes it just about into classic blowout territory. The layering remains however still very Scandi. Everything falls from a deep side part and the longest layers hit just at the collarbone and then flare out. That warm honey color is lovely here and should catch the light beautifully in person. This is an excellent reference photo to bring to a stylist in case you want something that is just a bit more polished for a special event while still being based on a cut that you can wear in a more casual way.

These layers are super Scandi, and since the hair is mostly worn straight, the layers create these nice soft feathered tips that just taper off the ends rather than creating any distinct shape. The root depth is blended nicely into the ash blonde, and the whole look is just really clean and low maintenance. I think this version is particularly good for people with naturally straight hair who don’t want to have to curl or wave it every day but still want a cut that has some more detail to it.

Long layered hair can appear to have been thinned out too much, though this cut avoids that completely because the layers are focused toward the bottom half so that the weight and fullness remain in the top and middle sections. On this tone, I love how silvery it looks in the light, almost providing a moodier, more editorial look than the warmer blonde options in this post. With the layers, it creates some good volume in the mid-section and the ends have that nice brush style flip. This shade takes an incredibly skilled colorist because silver tones can go wrong very easily, especially if the underlying pigment isn’t lifted enough, and can skew the finish to grey or lavender. But when it is done correctly, it is perfect.

This color is challenging to achieve due to its placement in between warm tones and ash tones. If a colorist isn’t careful when formulating this color, the results could be muddy or flat. However, when successfully done, the even layers create a natural color variation that looks deep as opposed to highlighted, from subtle reflections of their layered placement and light interaction. The gentle wave through the mid length and the Scandi aesthetic is that rumpled yet controlled look that creates the wave and mid length helps too, gives it that quality which I think is the whole point of.

A lob with these layers is an easy recommendation as it works on almost everyone and grows out beautifully, which is something I think people don’t think about enough when deciding on a style. The roots are kept darker so you don’t have to chase regrowth every few weeks, and the blonde gradually dips. The waves are loose and slightly messy which is my honest opinion, the whole vibe of this trend.
#16: Sleek Ash Blonde with Minimal Layering
All scandi layers can come across the same. This is an example of a unique take where the layers are almost indistinguishable yet smooth. The hair is straight and almost seamlessly turns at the ends. The only layering she has is internal texture. This let’s the hair not feel heavy at the bottom. The ash blonde tone is really natural looking, like this could genuinely be her real color, which is always the goal when you are working with Scandinavian-inspired tones.
#17: Honey-Kissed Long Layers with a Side Fringe
I’m getting such 70s vibes with the curtain fringe swept aside and the super long layers that curl under at the ends! The color is so gorgeous and has this beautiful honey quality where it stays darker at the root and brightens and warms up through the lengths! It takes a certain amount of thickness in the hair to really pull off layers this long without looking stringy, so if your hair is on the finer side, you might want to go a bit shorter to get the same effect. The blowout was clearly done with a large barrel round brush to get those smooth, turned under ends.
#18: Cool Champagne Blonde with Polished Waves
It?s nice and bright blonde and it is just the right blonde color for photos and for warmth/cool balance. The back is a little longer and feels slightly more sophisticated. It displays that this hair would look nice either worn down or up in a simple low bun. That versatility of style is something I always think about when making cuts.

The money piece brightens up the whole look and draws attention to the center of her face. It also contrasts the warm bronde color. The layers mid-length and give a nice vintage softer set curve at the end. I think this is a great look for someone with a natural medium brown color who wants to try a Scandinavian look without going too blonde.
#20: Creamy Vanilla Bob with Loose Bends
I appreciate the length, probably the most forgiving version of the scandi layers for those who don’t want to put in a lot of effort into styling. The waves are so casual that it looks like she slept on a braid and just shook it out, which may actually be the case. The colour is a really nice vanilla blonde that in some lights looks warm and in others looks cool, which indicates it is well toned. This is one of those cuts that honestly looks good air dried with just a bit of texturing spray scrunched in.
#21: Icy Platinum with a Soft Shoulder Length Cut
This is a nice example of Scandi layers on a shorter length, where the hair just touches the shoulders and the layers are really subtle, more about creating a slight bend and movement rather than any sort of dramatic shape. The platinum is very cool and clean, which takes some maintenance to maintain. On hair this light and fine, a heat protectant spray is non-negotiable every single time you use a hot tool.
#22: Warm Golden Waves with Curtain Framing
This look gives me old Hollywood vibes but in a super chill way. The waves are nice and the golden tone is warm and creamy, which gives it a classy look, likely the best a color can get. The layers begin near the collarbone and fall beautifully, giving the look a lot of volume. This is hair I could admire for a long time.
#23: Cool-Toned Brunette with Face-Framing Highlights
What I enjoy about this example is that it illustrates Scandi layers need not be a blonde thing. This base is a natural cool brown and features lighter pieces around the face and slightly less concentrated pieces throughout. These layers are starting around the chin. This cut looks great for someone not quite ready to go blonde, but wants movement and softness. The ends have that flip you get from a round brush which makes it super easy to achieve that at home.
#24: Polished Platinum Bouncy Blowout
This is definitely a salon blowout situation and I will be honest, this level of polished looks pretty unrealistic for a Tuesday morning before work. Now, the cut underneath is doing so much of the heavy lifting here. You can see how the layers create that curtain effect that flips out at the ends. The platinum is gorgeous but costly in terms of upkeep. We’re talking toner every 4-6 weeks at a minimum, but the payoff is so worth it if you’re committed!
#25: Bright Butter Blonde with Beachy Texture
The way each layer is long enough to blend in so that you don’t notice them until the hair moves is awesome. When the hair moves you see the whole shape come alive. The blonde in the front and middle sections is bright, but at the roots gives the illusion of depth. If you go this light a good purple shampoo will be your friend to keep it from getting brassy until your next appointment.
