The French bob style is one that has come in and out of fashion and with each rise in popularity, a different person seems to use it to showcase their individuality. It is perhaps the most popular hairstyle requested in the salon and what makes it particularly interesting is how this style seems to vary so much in one person to the next. Just the other month, a client of mine who had spent three years growing her hair out came in with a picture of Léa Seydoux ready to jump out of a plane. Twenty minutes later, she was in the wind and laughing. That is what most people tend to overlook about this haircut, it seems like a big step, but in reality, you will be left wondering why you did not do it sooner.
One more thing that I like about the French bob is that it is one of the rare cuts that actually follows through with the promise it offers, unlike most of the ‘effort’ styles we see today. This style manages to look very much like it was deliberate. While this cut won’t suit everyone and many of the styles will require some level of maintenance, I have curated a collection of 28 particular styles that I think will be worth the effort.

#1: Dark Bob with Soft Blunt Bangs
Chin-length hairstyles usually look good in photos and in person, which isn’t always true for certain styles. This chin-length hairstyle looks so neat because it features blunt bangs that are soft enough to not look like they’ve been cut with a ruler. French bobs are known for being high maintenance, but if you have fine straight hair, this style will be way easier to manage since the hair does all the work. The dark color also adds a lot to the overall style since it looks sharper than if there was a lighter shade. Keep in mind that if you want the bangs to look like this with the same fringe length, you will need to get bangs trimmed every 3-4 weeks, so consider this before going for it.

#2 Textured Bob with Face-Framing Layers
The purpose of these layers is to pull focus toward the middle of the face while still leaving it open, which is a skill that not every stylist has. This is a great cut for someone who wants a bob but doesn’t want to lose all of their length since it still has some movement past the jaw. With finer hair, a texture spray will probably definitely be necessary to keep the layers from collapsing by the afternoon. The warm brunette color adds depth to the layers in a way that a single-process color wouldn’t, so if this is the look you’re after, expect to pay almost as much for the color as you will for the cut.

#3 Textured Bob with Soft Fluffy Waves
In the playful vs polished dichotomy, I think there’s more playful, which I think is more appealing. The waves look soft and a little ‘undone’. The type of waves where you’d grab some mousse, scrunch and go, rather than taking time at the mirror to do some curling. It’s unrefined, but in a good way. There’s a younger audience here and that’s an elusive goal. With medium to thick hair that has some waves, this will work to your advantage because the texture means less work for you. If your hair is very straight and fine, you’ll have to fight for this look every morning and I’m not sure that it is going to be worth it.

#4 Textured Bob with Bangs
I prefer the back of this a lot more than the front. This bob has some layering at the nape which feels weightless, and makes it feel a lot less heavy overall. The bangs, of course, soften and hide the forehead, but they also help to round off the look. The back and sides have more movement which is nice. For anyone that likes wearing their hair behind their ears, this kind of cut is perfect because the back layers remain styled and won’t get in the way. Also just a heads up, it’s a bit different having bangs while it’s growing out, especially if you’re going for that blended look.

#5 Classic French Bob with Blunt Bangs
This is about as traditional as a French bob gets, and sometimes, that is all you need. No gimmicks, no over-styled layers, just a clean cut that sits above the shoulders with a fringe that sits just where you want it. I would direct this to someone who has straight hair and wants a low maintenance style. For the right hair type, it’s a “brush it and go” kind of cut. The first thing I always mention with blunt bangs like this is the shape of the forehead. If someone has a very short forehead, a fully blunt bang can make the face feel squished. Clip in bangs are great so it is worth a shot before you go for it.

#6 Silvery Textured Bob with Soft Layers
This one is all about color! That fully committed silver/gray blend is stunning. It’s the sort of thing you’ve just got to go for — no half measures. I’ve had clients who’ve been battling their gray for years, and the look of relief when they finally let me take them silver was so satisfying. The cut is simple and straight forward — soft layers at a nice manageable length — but the color brings it to something really purposeful. When going silver, be prepared for multiple sessions to get the look, and stock up on purple shampoo to keep any brassy tones at bay.

#7 French Bob with Soft Curves
The way the layers curve around the face shape is great. They make your chin look as though it extends the lower part of your face. It’s a small detail, but with heart shaped faces, it makes a difference. It adds the perfect amount of visual weight under the cheekbones. The chocolate color is a nice touch too. It’s warm without a red tint which I appreciate because a lot of brunette shades turn coppery under salon lights and then change again in daylight. I’d suggest this cut to someone wanting to look really nice for a brunch without doing anything extra that day.

#8 Textured French Bob with Soft Bangs
A good option for a majority of individuals is a chin length cut with believable bangs, and this is a good case. The light finish texture is just right, and is what you get by using some texturizing spray and letting your hair dry on its own. Once it’s correctly cut, it’s really low effort. The bangs are soft enough to not look crazy, and I can say this is more some heavier fringe looks, if you happen to skip a wash day.

#9 Sleek Bob with Blunt Bangs
This bob has an editorial style. It looks like it could be in a magazine spread, but it is also realistic and easy to wear. Blunt bangs are the main feature of this bob and provide a strong sense of definition to the style. If you like a messy look then this bob is not for you as it very polished. It stays in shape nicely with fine to medium hair. The ends are cut enough to avoid a helmet head look. There is a risk with having a bob and blunt bangs, and that risk is the look being too polished. Get ready to trim those bangs every few weeks.

#10 Textured French Bob with Wispy Bangs
This length sits right at the jawline, which is a very precise and complimentary spot for a certain type of face shape. If you have a more structured jaw, this haircut will really highlight that for you. The wispy bangs create even more softness and the overall layering gives it that French bob effect that really gives the beach look most are trying to achieve with this cut. It works so beautifully with naturally beachy hair. On very fine and straight hair, you might just have to coax some movement into it, but hopefully that won’t be too much of a task.

#11 Textured French Bob with Soft Layers
To be fair, this style doesn’t stand out on its own, and it is also much like a few other styles on this list. The bob hit right at the jaw and has layers and light texture making it easy to wear. If this is the picture and you are saying to yourself, “this is what I want,” then you are absolutely correct. This is the kind of look that requires minimal effort and a couple of the right styling products to help with the layering. This look is not an all day production kind of look, it is literally a thirty second style.

#12 Curly Bob with Bouncy Layers
Please provide a description of the text you would like to explain to us in a more personalized manner without listing any names.

#13 Textured Bob with Soft Bangs
There is a gentle piece-y quality to these bangs that prevents them from being overly chunky, and the soft wave throughout the lengths of the hair adds a lovely touch of being lived-in. I would direct this to a person with a round or heart shaped face since the length and the breaking of the bangs will provide some nice angles where you may want them. This will work best on fine to medium hair, but if you are on the very fine side, the bangs may go limp quicker than you would like. A dry shampoo at the roots will help with this.

#14 Curly Bob with Soft Bangs
While some hairstyles may look easy to achieve, this is not always the case. Certain cuts require an extensive knowledge of the various curl types, as well as a need to manage client expectations. The tousled texture is stunning, and the bangs elongate and add a classy touch to the look. You are lucky if your hair does something close to this, because it means you will spend almost no time styling. If your starting point is straight hair and you are hoping to achieve this look by curling your hair every single day, I would probably advise you against that. For this look, sea salt spray is a good option, but if your waves are more relaxed, you may need to enhance those waves more.

#15 Textured Bob with Curtain Bangs
Curtain bangs paired with a French bob are still popular because they balance out the style instead of adding to it. In this example, the bangs are cut to a length between the chin and shoulders, creating more options as some sections can be pulled back. Light texturing and layering make this style easier to wear if you like to change from a smooth style to a more messy one, and back again. Depending on your preference, this style can be really annoying or just right. With thin hair, the curtain bangs will probably move and show the forehead.

#16 Classic French Bob with Blunt Fringe and Highlights
This bob haircut is done nicely, and the highlights do what they are supposed to do, which is add dimension while keeping color looking natural. The blunt bangs are very defined and that definition is what gives the haircut an expensive look. But let’s be honest, bangs like this are high maintenance. If you are prone to pushing your appointments, it will start to look very grown out compared to the rest of the haircut. The clean lines of the haircut also mean that any imperfections will be very obvious, so go to a stylist that is really good at doing blunt cuts like a razor, and not someone who just uses a razor.

#17 Curly Bob with Subtle Layers
A French bob with soft curls is epic, as it breaks the notion that this haircut only works with straight hair. The layers are just right, enhancing the curl pattern instead of disrupting it. If you live somewhere humid, you know that curls have a mind of their own, so this is the type of haircut that will look different every day and you will need to be okay with that. A lightweight moisturizing product will keep everything defined without adding weight to the look. Moisturizing product will help define curls without adding weight.

#18 Modern French Bob with Side-Swept Layers
Hair of medium thickness or more can be intimidating when considering a French bob, but this cut proves the opposite is true. The layers strategically remove enough weight that the cut doesn’t go boxy. A blunt cut can’t provide the same movement at the ends that layered hair can, which is particularly important for thick hair. The square line at chin length is excellent for defining the jaw. One of the best qualities of this style is that it grows out beautifully. While it may need to be smoothed during humid weather, this style requires very little other maintenance.

#19 Layered Bob with Face-Framing Bangs
Face-framing layers hit cheekbone and this is done for a reason. It emphasizes the center of the face, and works really well for strong features and bone structure. The natural wave is relaxed and prevents it from looking too polished. This bob is the kind that will look even better on day 2, to give it that low maintenance ethos. The bangs will need some upkeep every few weeks, but the rest of the cut will have more growth before needing another trim.

#20 French Bob with Soft Blunt Bangs
The precision in this cut is immaculate. Everything is very clean, and the bangs are perfection. The subtle layering at the ends adds movement instead of making the ends stiff. The cut is above chin length, which gives the cut the true French bob proportion. Straight hair, and a little bit of shine looks effortless, yet polished. If your hair doesn’t have that natural shine, a gloss treatment at the salon will be necessary. I’ve noted on previous looks that blunt bangs require a lot of upkeep, and I suppose that is true here, but the rest of the cut is very forgiving about how much time you leave between appointments.

#21 French Bob with Feathered Ends
The ends of the hair being softer in comparison to blunt cuts means that this style is a good compromise for those who believe a bob style might be a bit too extreme. The length is above the shoulders which is practical for day to day activities and the hairstyle has a nice movement to it. It won’t be flat and lifeless by the end of the day. The finish also has a certain shine to it which suggests healthy hair and either a decent salon treatment or a combination of the two. Achieving that shine might be a bit more challenging for those with dry hair and some type of shine-enhancing product will probably be necessary. The good news is that the cut itself is pretty simple to look after and regular trims will keep it that way.

#22 Curly Bob with Textured Layers
This is a good look for someone with a touch of natural wave or curl, and is after a bob that really embraces that and won’t smooth it out. The way these layers are cut promotes movement and the little fringe keeps it feeling youthful, without going too young. If your hair is medium to thick, this is going to feel so much lighter than it has in a long time and that is one of the best things about going shorter! With fine hair, you can have something similar, but you may need to put in a bit more effort to get volume. A volume enhancing mousse at the roots will help you with that.

#23 Soft Layered Bob with Highlights
This haircut is for sure a crowd-pleaser and not in a bad way. It is not trying to be avant-garde or make a political statement. It is a well balanced bob that has enough layers to create movement, and enough highlights to create dimension. It is also suitable for round faces due to the vertical movement the layers add. It does great things for the face that a one length bob simply cannot do. If you want something a little more conservative but still modern and classy, this is a great option. Not every haircut has to change the world. Sometimes you just want to leave looking great and this will do it.

#24 French Bob with Textured Ends
In my opinion, this polished textured jaw length bob is one of the most universally flattering bob styles I offer. The soft layering here is perfect to avoid the ends looking too blunt or too heavy. The shape keeps a nice roundness to both showcase and contour the opened face shape. The shine and health of the hair shows that the owner of this cut cares about the health of their hair, which contributes much more than most people realize. It doesn’t matter how good a haircut is, if the ends are broken and split, it just looks like damaged hair.

#25 Textured Bob with Wispy Bangs
If you’re wondering what bangs require the least commitment, wispy bangs are probably the best option. On a French bob such as this one, they provide the perfect amount of softness at the front, and there is no maintenance associated with a full fringe. The relaxed layers and overall texture are low effort. If your hair is fine, this really is a good one because the cut isn’t trying to create volume that isn’t there; it’s working with what you’ve got. On days that may feel a little flat, all you will need is some texture powder at the roots.

#26 Rounded Bob with Subtle Texture
This bob helps with the thickness and bulkiness you can get at the nape of your neck when you have more hair back there. The nape will feel thick and ends up looking cocoon-like. What is often more frustrating is that you can’t see the problem in most cuts, but the problem is easily solved with this one. The dark color with a rounded silhouette is simple and timeless. With this cut, you won’t be screaming for the attention, but quietly, people will notice and it will give you a classy vibe.

#27 Textured French Bob with Highlights
Here we have a dependable French bob. It’s got highlights to keep it fun and a bit of texture to stop the cut from looking flat. While I normally prefer a French bob to be a little shorter, this shoulder-length cut gives you more versatility if you want to pull it back or pin sections up. Some people really do appreciate that. This length and layering combination is very oval face friendly. This may not be the most exciting style, but there is a lot of value in a look that you know you won’t feel self conscious about.

#28 Textured Bob with Soft Volume
The manipulating that makes this one work is the volume at the crown, which is achieved through the layering rather than a ton of product or blow-dry sit means it’s easily repeatable at home. The dark base with soft highlights gives it depth and the chin-length line is flattering on most face shapes. I would suggest this to someone wanting a bob that’s polished but not stiff, modern but not trendy. It’s the sort of cut that grows, so you can space your appointments out longer than you could with a lot of the more structured bob options on this list.
