Most people have no idea that the “face frame” rules most salons abide by have been outdated for years. A 44-year old client of mine, sat in my chair, and while I was styling her hair, she pulled out her phone. She wanted to show me multiple haircuts that she had previously chosen, but she got writer’s block and ended up convincing herself out of all of them. She told me she read an article that said she “couldn’t” have that haircut with her face shape. Out of all the haircuts she was supposed to have, we actually did one of the over 10 that she was supposed to have and she was in tears when I turned her to see the haircut. I don’t boast to say that, but I say it to show you that the industry has changed and most people haven’t realized it.
I’ve noticed a trend where haircuts start forming shapes around your face, which is something I used to find really strange. A lot of rounded faces have really soft and beautiful cheekbones, and it seems like a lot of styles just ignore them and try to cover them up instead of showing them off. The styles that I enjoy and am doing the most are the ones that are really popular right now and I am excited to share them with you on here. I have a few that I am really looking forward to, and I’ll be giving my honest opinions on some of these if I feel like it is necessary. Let’s go.

#1: Beige Blonde Wavy Chin-Length Bob
All the love for this look! It clearly gives off that bed head vibe and that’s the point! The chin length waves create movement so the cut doesn’t just sit there. Then that beige blonde? It works! It’s the ideal “I was born with this” color. Hit it with a good sea salt spray and honestly you’re done! This is one of those styles where doing less gives you more and I’m here for it!

#2 Voluminous Burgundy Bob with Side-Swept Bangs
Burgundy hair is an amazing color choice and provides great dimension with all its brilliant layers. There is so much depth to this color, it is almost unbelievable. The bangs are great because they help divert attention away from the roundness of the face, which is ideal. Burgundy is undoubtedly one of those colors that begins to fade right as you walk out of the salon. I recommend you make friends with color-depositing shampoos, or you’ll find yourself back in my chair sooner than you’d like. If your hair is medium to thick, this will be phenomenal because it is that density that allows such great volume to be created with this shape.

#3 Soft Layered Waves for Thick Hair
The long layered look is perfect for someone who wants to change things up but wants to keep things very similar to how they are now. Length really helps with the “she cut a lot of hair off and now I look like a different person” vibe. The cutting and arranging of the layers really softens the feeling of thick hair while also helping it achieve the effortless beauty look. It does a lot of work to get hair from overwhelming to that gorgeous hair. The layers do a lot of work to fall just right, they change the whole look of the hair without having to be voluminous. The great thing is that most styles work with this cut so no matter what you’re feeling, you can just adjust it to feel sleek or wavy or however you want. You might want to skip condition. If the hair isn’t conditioned, it’s going to get dry and crunchy and then we’re going to have a bad time.

#4 Textured Layered Bob with Fringe
This bob style with bangs looks amazing! The playful layers are the right amount of fun. The bangs will help divide the look. They will help take away from the “I just got back from vacation” face. The hair length is great because the hair goes a little over the shoulder. This length will still allow hair to be tied back if necessary. But it will look intentional when the hair is down. The placement of the layers looks great for adding movement. The layers will help add texture, and also remove the bulk from areas that you do not want. Bangs will need to be trimmed every 3-4 weeks or it will be poking you in the eye. You will do that annoying face blow thing. But will it be worth it? Yes!

#5 Breezy Tousled Bob for Medium Density Hair
This hairstyle is one of the few that looks great both in real life and in pictures. The angled front bangs emphasize your eyes and cheekbones, while the soft flowing layers around the jaw area are very flattering for round face shapes. In terms of maintenance, you really just need some mousse and a blow dryer. For those with medium thickness hair, root lift spray might be needed for adequate volume, but if your hair is closer to the thin end of medium, you might need to put in more effort. And for the sake of my sanity, please use a heat protectant.

#6 Dynamic Chestnut Waves with Subtle Highlights
The waves and highlights create a beautiful sun-kissed effect, as well as, a nice beachy vibe. I picture the waves being done naturally. Finished waves create a more relaxed vibe, and highlights that are done well keep things light and bright without being overly done. For double chins or rounder face shapes, waves are excellent because the gives length to the face, which is subtle but nice. Mousse is a great holding product and flexible enough to keep the waves in shape all day. If you’re doing waves, work a bit of damp hair into the mousse and you’re set to go!

#7 Chic Chestnut Bob with Full Bangs
This is the cut that gets me irrationally hyped because its doing so much with so little and that’s when you know a haircut is really good. That blunt line ending just below the cheeks is so clean and purposeful, not to mention the full straight bangs are giving this whole mysterious vibe that I live for. Here’s what most people don’t understand about full bangs on a round face, they actually really do the trick because they create a horizontal line that makes everything below look more angular. And the solid chestnut hue? No highlights to touch up, no balayage growing out weird, just one gorgeous warm color. You will need to do regular bang trims, that is non negotiable, but the rest of this cut is going to be as low maintenance as it gets.

#8 Warm Caramel Balayage on Loose Curls
If you’ve been thinking of getting a balayage, then this is your sign! It is one of the most low maintenance color services, as it grows out naturally, so you won’t have to spend a ton of time in the chair. That means more taco money in your pocket! If you have thick hair, a warm caramel balayage paired with soft, loose curls will provide you with a more elevated and luxurious look. The color adds a much-needed depth and dimension to your strands. You’ll love the way the layers are cut to accentuate your natural curls, and that detail is what really sets this style apart. This is the type of haircut that sparks the biggest compliments, “You look fabulous! What have you done different?” That’s the type of praise we’re all hoping for.

#9 Modern Soft Copper Shag with Bangs
This shag look is one of my favorites. With a shag cut on thinner hair, you get the illusion of having way more hair, which is a nice perk to get. Plus, the copper color is a great choice. I always think this shade looks the most flattering on everyone! Also the color just makes everyone’s complexion look so much healthier, it’s crazy. I love how customizable bangs are because you can style your bangs so many different ways. You can go for a side part, full on curtain bangs, look and even tuck them behind your ears. Just as a warning though, copper is one of the colors that fades the fastest but honestly it’s probably fine to have a softer strawberry color as your hair might look nice anyway!

#10 Vibrant Auburn Tousled Bob with Subtle Highlights
The volume on the top of the head is excellent for round face shapes because it draws the eye up, creating an elongation effect for the face, even if you don’t notice it consciously, your brain will. The auburn color with highlights captures the beauty of the multi-dimensional color so well that it appears as if the hair has ten different shades which adds to the thickness and interest of the hair as opposed to a single-process color. The shoulder-length hair that sits right at the shoulders with a small inward curl is absolutely lovely as it brings a beautiful frame around the jaw. The hair will also require a bit of work as some maintenance will be needed to keep that messy look, a quick scrunch and some product should be enough, however, this is not a wash and go hairstyle.

#11 Bouncy Cinnamon Bob with Soft Bangs
I just did my hair last week but I’m already considering going again since I love this cinnamon color! The best part about this hairstyle has to be the soft bangs. I love that they’re not blunt and they still show some skin, makes it look more open. The layering is so well done too. This look would suit you if your hair gets finer as time goes on (which it does for all of us). With this kind of style, to keep the bangs and layers looking fresh, expect to be in the salon every 6-8 weeks. But I think it’s so worth it!

#12 Rich Auburn Cascade with Glamorous Waves
THIS is what I have an appointment for hair for and I am OBSESSED. Thick hair? Been wearing it all one length? Do yourself a favor and look at this. This is rich auburn and it is warming up the skin in the most flattering way. Thick hair with layers goes from looking like a wall to looking like a commercial. And yes, those waves do not just happen. You are going to need a larger barrel curling iron and a light hairspray to keep the bounce. But once the technique is mastered, the time spent is SO worth it.

#13 Sleek Caramel Lob with Gentle Waves
I am always recommending lobs, and this caramel one is a great example of how it works on everyone! You get to keep some length but not so much that it is dragging your features down. That is the round face trick. The way it is layered is so beautiful and gives the illusion of youth. The caramel tones also give it a beautiful, lit-from-within look that I think takes years off. These soft waves give it a little ‘done’ look and keep it from looking dull. I do think you have to style this one regularly because lobs that have been left untreated can start looking like a bad grow out, and we don’t want that.

#14 Chic Textured Pixie with Swept Bangs
Each time I give this style, I feel as if the mood of the entire place changes. I think it’s because there is something about a short cut that always seems to elevate someone’s confidence, and I love seeing it. This pixie is particularly nice because the texture keeps it more soft instead of harsh. The jagged ends look like they create a lot of movement so the cut stays more approachable/fun rather than edgy-scary. The cut here has side bangs which are super helpful for round faces because they help create that diagonal line and add more angles where they are needed. For those with hair of medium density who is looking to create some more volume, this cut will become your best friend. Just know that the bangs will require maintenance to keep that look intentional.

#15 Effortless Brunette Waves with Soft Bangs
Many people look at this style and want to have “carefree” hair like this. This style does take some effort. The soft bangs and flowing waves give this style a nice balance to round shaped faces. The bangs give nice coverage to the forehead without looking too heavy, and the waves add width and length in the right places. This cut works best with medium to thick hair since there will be more volume with the waves. Wavy hair and humidity don\’t mix well. So if you live in a humid place and you don\’t want to go for a “cute poodle” look, you might want to buy some anti humidity spray. It\’s nice that with this style you don\’t have to use a lot of heat tools to create the waves.

#16 Effortless Tawny Textured Bob for Vibrant Polish
This is a tawny bob haircut. The quiet confidence look. This will get noticed but won’t scream for attention. The bob layered texture creates volume and movement. This helps with hair that has lost some ooomph over the years without looking like you trying too hard. Also the color! Tawny warm shade goes with just about any skin tone and brightens and livens and up the complexion. This style sits just above the shoulders so it isn’t getting in your way and the minimal styling is, I know some of you are celebrating, a win. The color will need some maintenance but the cut low maintenance demands is a combo I love recommending.
