When you came up to me and told me you wanted to get red hair and bangs, I had to stop myself from applauding. That look is definitely going to suit you!! It’s probably true that most people talk themselves out of getting looks like that because they don’t have the confidence to pull it off. One of my clients came in and literally whispered while looking around, “I’ve always wanted to try red.” It sounded like she was confessing to some crime. I was very pleased with the change she made, leaving my salon with the hair that matched the image of herself. What nobody tells you about having red hair and bangs is that with each different hairstyle you get done, and depending on how ‘dirty’ you are willing to let it get, there are like forty different looks. Last year I had a woman come in and ask for an “auburn” hair color. She left with a striking cherry red bob and curtain bangs. When we were picking out hair dye colors, she discovered that “subtle” was not the description she wanted. That’s exactly what red is about, it gives you permission to be loud!
There are a few more things I want to say before I get into the 25 different looks. First, I must say that choosing a red shade is a huge commitment, but this depends on the exact shade you decide on.
Different colors will give you different maintenance expectations—if you decide on deep burgundy, your maintenance will be totally different than if you picked bright copper, so your reality when it comes to maintenance will be determined by your color choice. Also, bangs are a commitment as well, because they require trimming every few weeks, and if you don’t, they’ll start to go rogue, but not in a good way. However, when you have the right color, the perfect cut, and you’re current with all the maintenance, there’s nothing like it. I’ve put together a list of my favorite combinations of red hair with bangs, and I definitely have some strong opinions about each.

#1: That Perfect Red Bob You’ve Been Manifesting
It’s red AND HAS BANGS! Love it! The bright red hue is giving advertising board energy! Also, thank the hair god for bangs because otherwise it would be a wild and messy color. But the bangs really bring it together and create a whole look. The layers in the bob add so much movement, like wow. If your hair is thick, this cut is for you. It looks effortless and laid-back but in reality you definitely put in a ton of effort. It was designed for volume, and so you’ll need to refresh the color often because color this vivid wont be low maintenance and I won’t pretend otherwise.

#2 Long, Straight, and Unapologetically Red
I don’t know why, but I feel like the main character, no offense. The blunt bangs, long, and straight hair is a very complete and polished vibe. I feel like the deep red is a bold and intentional statement. I like this hair version because the bangs are at brow level which is the ideal length to be face framing but not overly so. For this to look good, you’re definitely going to need a good flat iron because at this length, with a look this straight, you really don’t want any bends or frizz and that’s just the reality of long straight hair.

#3 The Shoulder-Length Red That Actually Works in Real Life
This one provides a workable example of red hair with bangs that does not necessitate a full alteration of your morning routine each time you replicate this style. The light bangs contribute to a more relaxed appearance and the shoulder length is great because it avoids all that hair fading unevenly. I wish more individuals considered that before committing to a bright color at a length that hits the waist. This cut is ideal for people who want to have the appearance of a fully developed aesthetic when in reality she has only twelve minutes to work with in the morning.

#4 Long Red Waves That Actually Have Personality
We love the texture and look of this style! For example, thick hair that has a subtle natural wave is gorgeous as a warm red color adds a lot of dimension . Instead of a flat color on straight hair, waves in the hair reflect light at different angles adding more depth to the style. The color looks multidimensional without any highlights or balayage that can complicate the color process and is perfect for someone who prefers to keep the color process simple. The bangs are soft enough to blend into the rest of the style, and while that can give you options, if your hair is fine you will need to use a volumizing mousse to achieve the same fullness so keep that in mind.

#5 The Choppy Bob for When You’re Done Being Predictable
I think of this as the haircut equivalent of quitting a job you hate. It’s messy and disorganized. Wispy bangs are a “I woke up like this, and I’m not talking” statement. The red hair color completes the rebellious look. I especially like this look on fine hair because the choppiness creates the appearance of thickness without needing a blowout, and the model’s natural wave is perfect. This cut is one of those that looks better the less you touch it. The less you style it, the more it shows. That’s the style I really enjoy giving the most, because it means you’re really going to appreciate having it, instead of having to hate it by week 2.

#6 Textured Red Bob with a Fringe That Means Business
The star is definitely the bob and fringe combo. It helps that the body of the bob has enough texture to look lived-in and the fringe offers shape so you get a nice balance between polished and effortless. The red is a good choice because it’s deep enough to not wash out in three shampoos. If you have medium density hair you will find this style zero effort after the first cut. You will need regular trims because bobs get a lot of straggly pieces once they pass the sweet spot.

#7 Burgundy With Blunt Bangs, a.k.a. the Power Move
If you think regular red feels like a big jump, I suggest trying burgundy first, and here’s why. It is still bold and expressive but has a refinement that a brighter red may not have as easily. The mix of blunt bangs and long sleek hair is totally my vibe and will also fit your patience. The look comes with an ultra high gloss finish, which is also necessary to elevate the look to expensive. A gloss treatment like this consistent with your color service appointments will keep your hair looking salon fresh and is worth the investment because dull burgundy is a different and sadder thing.

#8 Burgundy Bob with Bangs That Have Texture and Opinions
Textured bangs are great and I appreciate how they are framed and have features that a blunt cut wouldn’t show. I feel like they are longer than a typical bob, and that particular burgundy tone with some piecy bangs makes the look more approachable. It’s the type of fun look that could still be stylish enough for a nice dinner. Any hair that hits right at or above the shoulders is the ideal length for a softer look you might want to style, but still looks best just down. This is a great cut for fine hair too because it really enhances the look of a round brush blowout and the burgundy will give the visual density that your natural color doesn’t.

#9 Side-Swept Bangs and Red Waves, Because Why Not Both
Side-swept bangs are forming a great diagonal across the face, making the overall look very lively, even before we get to the waves. I wouldn’t recommend getting side-swept bangs all the time because, if the rest of the hairstyle isn’t very well done, they can look retro. However, with the shoulder-length, textured waves, they look really modern. The red is a warm, bright color that will alter your skintone for better or worse depending on your undertones. If you’re considering this, please bring an example of what you want, and make sure you also have a photo of yourself in natural light. This color is really bright, and it’ll determine how much you need this as a color.

#10 Long Layers and Soft Bangs in a Red That Doesn’t Quit
I can honestly say this is the red hair with bangs style that other red hair with bangs styles look up to. The layering is done very well also because the layers start low enough that you get movement without losing any density up top, which is a mistake I see all the time with layered cuts where people go too short too fast and suddenly you’ve got see-through sections near the crown. The soft bangs frame well without being overwhelming, and the red is rich enough to carry through the bottom without looking thin at the ends. If you have medium to thick hair then this is an obvious choice, but if you’re on the thinner side I’d probably steer you toward something with a bit less length because gravity is not your friend when it comes to keeping the illusion of fullness.

#11 Medium-Length Red Waves That Don’t Take Themselves Too Seriously
I enjoy how this style looks light and fun instead of being overly dramatic. Most red styles with bangs can look very harsh, but this one has a very soft and lived in wave. The bangs are also soft and of an easy length, which creates a result where she looks really beautiful, but not like she is trying too hard. Honestly, that is the goal we all want to achieve most of the time whether we want to admit it or not. This is a style that can be worn for a range of occasions, from a Tuesday morning coffee run to a Saturday night out, which is more valuable than most people realize. The cut also makes for an easy maintenance style, which makes it easier to keep those bright red colours looking good.

#12 Long Red Layers with Fringe for the Committed
When I say ‘committed’, I mean to the color. This red shade at this length is a lifestyle choice, and it’s something I respect enormously. The layer definition is editorial and moves like it’s being photographed, even if you’re just walking to the car, and the fringe finishes the whole outfit off so it doesn’t stray into costume. This look does demand real hair care though, and that is said with love. It’s a crime for long red hair to look unkempt because it is so obvious, especially when the ends go copper and brassy, but the roots are still rich which immediately creates that two-tone situation. You are going to love a good color-depositing shampoo.

#13 A Textured Red Bob That’s Just Really, Really Good
I think the most simple style is also the most powerful and this is it. The relaxed bangs and slight tousled texture is a style that suits everyone but, especially those with ‘the right hair.’ If you have that hair, let me provide you this cut! It’s ideal for medium to fine hair because the layers create interest without the excessive weight cutting the length. You’ll be able to keep this style with only a texturizing spray, and I know I say that with almost every cut, but this time I mean it.

#14 Burgundy Bob with Wispy Bangs, for the Quietly Bold
Not everyone wants to make a statement by shouting, and this look is for those people. The burgundy color is rich and interesting, and the ethereal bangs soften the look, creating a nice contrast, and keeping the style from being too severe like a blunt fringe. What I like most about this version is that it looks expensive. It looks like you spent more than you definitely did, and that comes down to the depth of bng the color and quality of cut. The waves are a nice touch, providing ideal movement to ensure it doesn’t look stiff or helmet-y, which is the silent killer of bobs everywhere. If you have an oval face, this bob is basically meant for you, but I have also seen it look phenomenal on rounder faces where the wispy fringe just elongates everything.

#15 Red Bob with Soft Bangs and Just the Right Amount of Wave
The design is very nice. There is great attention to detail with the cutting and choice of colors. The red color is very bold, but it isn’t too aggressive because of the loose waves and soft bangs. I would give this style to someone in a creative profession that has to go to meetings. It is both professional and stylish. We would say the hair is fine to medium, which is suitable for the style. If the hair is heavy and thick, the bob would puff out in the wrong areas. So if you’ve always thought your thinner hair felt like a disadvantage, this is your moment.

#16 Blunt Bangs with Red Waves, for When Subtlety Has Left the Building
Blunt bangs combined with textured waves is an unusual hairstyle that might break some rules. This hairstyle brings together chaos and order in a way that works better than expected. There’s a striking difference between the sharp blunt cut bangs and the rest of the hair which is free to get messy and go in wild directions. The beautiful red color of the hair also adds to the fire. This look will take some commitment because bangs have to be kept short. Bangs that have started to grow out look slightly unintentional and will give off the wrong vibe to the whole look.

#17 Layered Red with Soft Bangs, Done Exactly Right
I clearly do this cut on a lot of people, and there is a good reason why: you don’t need a sophisticated styling routine at home, and this cut suits every hair type! The movement is soft and the bangs can be styled differently and pushed to the side if you want a different look without doing a full on change. The red color brings out all the layers and gives more dimension than a solid brown or blonde color. Maintenance is easy if you can get to the salon every 6-8 weeks. If you haven’t been, let’s talk about your priorities!

#18 Ruby Red Blunt Bob, No Apologies Necessary
This is a huge compliment, but I’m seriously considering canceling my appointment just to take yours right now! That ruby red color is so stock photo quality, and the blunt bob is going to be so awesome in photos. I know that might not be important to some of you, and I’m not saying anything negative about it. The wispy bangs on an otherwise strong look are doing the most because without them it could go costume. If your hair is fine to medium this bob will hold its shape beautifully, and that shorter length means your color is going to be nice and concentrated rather than stretched thin over a lot of length.

#19 Copper Curls with Blunt Bangs, for the Fearless
I have a deep appreciation for Copper; it has a remarkable charm when paired with non-surfboard curls, and it also looks great with the rest of the red tones. The blunt bang and curly hairstyle combination is a tricky one, and some hairdressers might be right to exercise that caution because bangs sit above the curl line and require a good understanding of what they are doing, given how high the curl pattern will be at that particular length. This looks especially beautiful when it is executed perfectly, and it is gorgeous when it looks as good as it does in this photo. The life that this styling adds is refreshing at so many levels. Unfortunately, Copper is one of the colors that fades the fastest. Therefore, expect to start using a color-depositing conditioner to maintain that vivid look before your next appointment.

#20 Layered Red with Bangs That Frame Like They Were Custom-Built
These bangs give an almost custom fit to this face, which is great as this is how bangs should look, but so often do not – most clients tend to come in with pictures of people with totally different face shapes and expect the same result. The red shade in the hair is very vivid, but is counteracted by the softness of the layered waves, and the mid-length is just right as it is long enough to be substantial, but not so long that it pulls everything down. Once washed, this hairstyle will sort itself out if your hair is naturally wavy like this. If it’s not, you should be prepared to spend around ten minutes on a large barrel to get those curls.

#21 Red Waves with Blunt Bangs That Mean Something
Blunt bangs are one of the most impactful changes you can make to a hairstyle. There is something about blunt bangs on red hair that evokes a modern and vintage look. The loose waves here help to counter the bangs and keep the entire look from becoming too harsh, which is what you want to achieve when getting bangs and waves. The warm to cool color transitions throughout the lengths of the hair is what makes this look more than just red hair and bangs. This is the type of look where you will get unsolicited compliments from strangers; I am not exaggerating.

#22 Curly Red with Blunt Bangs, the Brave Version
The previously discussed copper curls were a fun choice, but this one is the crazy choice. The red here is a darker, much more rich color. Combined with thick curly hair and blunt bangs, it makes for a look that commands presence. I know many of you either want that type of presence or fear it, and both sides are reasonable. Thick curly hair tends to take color better. This is because the curls create depth and shadow so that the color gives a richer effect compared to straight hair. So, from a single color, you get more contrast than you would with straight hair. Curls this thick will mean you have to get more trims than you would think because they won’t just grow longer, they’ll grow wider. Before you know it, your bangs will have consumed your entire forehead.

#23 Long Red Waves That Look Like They Cost More Than They Did
This look has a lot of various components, and while it may appear especially intricate, the structure of the cut is refined enough to let the color take center stage, which is a lot of great haircutting. The combination of warm and cool tones in this red gives the impression of having depth and dimension, and although this may seem to take forever to achieve, it is very well worth the time. This is the kind of color that changes depending on the light and more often than not, it looks good. The blunt bangs finish off this look and stop it from going into the unstructured bohemian realm, providing a touch more edge to the look, which is nice. This kind of look is very achievable on finer to medium hair, and the waves won’t get weighed down by a lot of hair, so what you see here is realistic if your hair behaves as you would like it to.

#24 Flirty Layered Red, Because You Deserve Something Fun
Hair that catches the light can improve your mood and make your energy feel better overall. I believe certain hair styles with bright colors and bouncy movement can make people happy. I have also noticed that these styles tend to bring out a positive energy from those wearing them. An example of this style is one that has lots of layers, meaning the style has a lot of movement from the hair. It also looks like there is a lot of volume from the density at the crown of the head. Soft bangs can enhance a positive look on a person’s face if they frame the face and improve the shape of the face, but aren’t a big distraction. In brighter colors, this is especially true, and I say this from personal experience. Reds do fade, and as we all know, this shade of red will fade to a copper color. It will still look good, but the look will be different from what you originally desired. If you want your hair to look like this, then plan on getting your colors done every five weeks! It will be worth it!

#25 Glossy Red Bob, Sharp Bangs, Zero Messing Around
This look is the simplest and maybe even the best. It shows how effective a well executed concept is. Glossy bob + bold red + straight bangs = perfection. Knowing when to stop is a clear sign of an understanding of good design and that is what is happening here. The gloss is what sells this look and comes down to hair care, the right products, and some help from the light. If you have fine hair, this will be the easiest to maintain. Just keep on top of the color as a faded red bob will be very obvious when you need to touch it up.
