While getting a pixie cut done, the clients and I have the most honest conversations. It is such a special moment when, after years and years of the same shoulder length style, a woman finally decides to make the cut. I have had clients say things like `I want to feel like myself again` which is a stark contrast to the expected answer of wanting to appear younger or more trendy. One of my favorite clients (and a grandmother of four!) said she had been thinking about a shorter cut for over a decade. She had never done it because she thought a pixie cut would be too `bold` for her age. When I finally cut it, she sat in silence for a while and then asked, `Why did I wait so long?` I hear some version of that question almost every week and it always stays with me.
I also find it fascinating that older women with pixie cuts often find that their hair texture is also very helpful. Gray hair has a lot more “body and texture” which means it gives a lot of natural structure in a short hairstyle without requiring much effort. The thinning hair that older women often worry about also becomes less of a concern in a pixie cut, since you aren’t fighting the gravity that comes with longer hair. The work in this collection is from real women and you can see that the cuts are all different lengths. That is kind of the point.

#1: Ash Blonde Voluminous Feathered Cut
So much volume and it totally works! The feathered layers are stacked beautifully at the crown, then taper into soft wispy pieces around the ears. The ash blonde with some darker roots coming through adds nice dimension and fullness to the style. This cut will look great with a round brush and a blow dryer for about three minutes and then you’re set!

#2 The Big Chop: Textured Ash Blonde Pixie Transformation
This is my favorite kind of transformation. The long hair on the left looks tired and thin, like it’s been hanging on just out of habit. But on the right, it’s all different. The pixie cut is full of life, movement, and volume, not to mention the ash blonde toning adds a brightness that was completely buried before. What I love the most is her expression in both pics. In both of them, she looks amazing, but in the second one, there’s a new lightness to her face that was missing before. That’s what the right hair cut can do, and no amount of long layers was ever going to give her that.

#3: Deep Plum Sleek Pixie
I admire how the deep plum color choice is not afraid to take risks. It is warm enough to be flattering against her skin, yet still deep and rich rather than overly bold and distracting. The cut of the hair is simple, showing off her side-swept bangs and part of her forehead. There is a deliberate choice behind that bold clash, and I often think of it as a lesson. When hair is cut above the shoulders, it is often thought of as a safe choice, but plum hair and short cuts can be a bold choice at any age, especially so in your sixties and seventies.

#4: Warm Chestnut Side-Swept Pixie
I also like this length. It is a nice in-between a true pixie and a baby bob. It is also a nice comfortable transition cut for someone who isn’t ready to go fully cropped. The warm chestnut color feels intentional, but not overly so. I also love how the longer pieces in the front sweep across the forehead because it adds movement to the style. This style will also grow out well, something a lot more short hairstyle clients don’t consider.

#5: Soft Mousey Blonde Grown-Out Pixie
I like how it looks a bit grown out. The gray and mousey blonde combo looks very natural and the length is at the spot where it could definitely go either way, grow it out a bit more or get it cut. The in-between length often gets a bad reputation, but with her it looks very intentional and laid back. The side part keeps it polished and gives it just enough shape.

#6: Soft Ash Blonde Tapered Pixie
This is a good cut that is very easy to wear. The ash blonde colour is nice and it is not too cool toned to her skin. The taper from top to sides is gentle enough to avoid harsh lines. This is the type of pixie that you could describe to most stylists and they would have a good idea of what to do. It might sound small, but it actually makes it an excellent reference photo to take to the salon.

#7: Espresso Piecey Fringe Pixie
This piece is cut with fringe, which looks piece-y with uneven layers in a modern way rather than sloppy. The color of the hair is a very deep, shiny espresso, which means it is in really good condition. Plus, it looks like the colorist actually put some thought into the health of the hair instead of just the color. The turtleneck goes really well with this cut, and I think it’s worth noting for anyone considering a short haircut. When you have short hair, the hair around your face really frames your features, so the collars and necklines of your tops become more noticeable.

#8: Warm Auburn Wavy Pixie with Highlights
The warmth in this cut is very inviting. The base is auburn with some copper highlights pulled through. The cut has waves all over to add fullness and life, as well as a flat and straight version of the same shape would Lack. The length on top is generous enough to create that movement, while the sides and nape. It’s a beautiful balance.

#9: Dark Chocolate Layered Pixie
The dark chocolate color adds a lot of richness to this style, and the layers do a great job of keeping the shape interesting without looking overdone. There are some wispy pieces at the nape that keep it from ending too abruptly, and this is a detail that makes a big difference in how a pixie cuts sits against the neck. It’s a really easy, effortless look that you could wear to anything and not think about twice.

#10: Polished Gray Side-Swept Pixie
The volume looks great! It seems that it was done with a blow dryer and a round brush, nothing more involved. The gray hair looks great with natural dimension and the darker pieces underneath anchor the lighter strands on top. The side sweep is lifted in a great way and not over done. This is one of those hair cuts that looks good in photos but even better in person with the way it captures the light.

#11: Wavy Ash Blonde Tousled Pixie
The undone look is amazing, the ash-blonde and gray combination is very nice and the waves look great on their own. It has a windswept, natural quality, and this pixie cut is going to look amazing with a wash and scrunch, you’re going to air dry it and whatever happens JOY is going to style it how it wants. Not every cut can pull that off, but this one definitely can.

#12: Lavender Silver Bowl-Cut Pixie
You can appreciate the level of intention in this look, especially with its lavender-silver modern vibe, clean graphic bowl-cut structure, and cohesive red lip. It really is super artful. The styling reminds me of a gallery opening but not in an artsy way. It makes the wearer look like they have a really good eye. The blunt heavy fringe is going to require really regular trims to stay this sharp, probably every three to four weeks.

#13: Classic Blonde Fringe Pixie
This is a subtle classic look with a soft fringe falling across the forehead. The blonde is gently transitioning to silver from the faded roots, and the stylist made the right choice to not fight that transition. Sometimes snd letting the grow out happen is the style. It’s clear she is in a natural space and the light shining through different tones suggests this hair is likely to look a little different every hour.

#14: Ash Blonde Soft Crop with Natural Movement
The cool ash blonde works perfectly with her natural silver rather than against it. The sides are cut very short and there’s just enough length on top to allow for some natural movement. It’s probably a little wave that she doesn’t have to think about. You can tell from the photo that this was taken right after the cut, and even freshly done it already looks relaxed rather than stiff.

#15: Brunette Micro Textured Crop
The length is close to the shortest a pixie cut can be before it starts to look like a buzz cut. The brown color is natural looking and the texture on top is a little spiky which keeps it from looking uniform. The statement earrings go well here and to be honest, that’s one of the real perks about going this short. Your accessories get to join in on the fun in a way they couldn’t before. Low effort, high reward.

#16: Soft Auburn Bowl-Cut Pixie
The style looks so good with her glasses. The bangs sit right at the brow line so they give a good frame to her face without hiding it. The warm auburn color really livens up her skin tone. The smile was great and I can tell she’s been wearing this style for a while. To me that’s the best endorsement a cut can get.

#17: Silver Close-Cropped Classic
Haircuts that appear to have taken five minutes to style are actually that easy to style in the mornings. The silver is entirely natural and the short tapered sides are clean. The cut gives a lot of direction to the hair and the forward sweep prevents the style from being too bold. This pixie cut will look good with gold earrings and will suit an effortless, confident style.

#18: Golden Curly Pixie
Curly pixies stand apart from the rest, and this one is a great example. Curls create both volume and shape without adding any extra styling. The golden blonde color is warm and flattering. It is important to note that dry cuts are required at this length for curly hair, as only a skilled dry cutter will understand how each curl will spring up. Wet cutting can lead to some surprises you didn’t ask for.

#19: Steel Gray Precision Pixie
This one is so nice. The steel grey color looks amazing and so does the cut. The fringe is choppy and cut above the eyebrows, and the sides are cut even tighter around the ears. There is something European about it. A confidence in keeping it sharp and unadorned. I love the contrast of the bold lip color and the grey hair.

#20: Feathered Gray Layered Pixie
This back view really shows the way thoughtful layers can create movement. The nape feathered pieces provide movement without added bulk and crown layers create a lovely ark from front to back. When hair has a mixture of dark and silver tones, layers are very important to let light reflect off the colors differently at each level. This creates a subtle elegance.

#21: Honey Highlighted Textured Crop
The subtle highlights with honey blonde woven into the darker base create dimension, but not such an obvious color job. The cut has nice texture through the crown and then tapers around the ears. This is the kind of pixie cut that I really appreciate because it looks awesome on day one and is still looking good on day four. A touch of texturizing paste and some finger combing is about all you’d need.

#22: Strawberry Blonde Micro Pixie
Short and simple and she seems happy with it. The strawberry blonde is a warm and natural looking color and the cut itself is as low maintenance as it gets. There isn’t much to say technically about this one but what I see is the confidence that comes through her smile. That is usually the best sign that a cut is right for someone.

#23: Platinum Piecey Crop
The platinum finish gives the hair a very natural look, especially with her skin tone. The way the hair is styled gives it a lived-in feel, which is something a lot of people try doing, but they usually don’t pull it off as well as this. The texture here gives this look a lot of character as well. It’s not too smooth, and everything is styled into place. It’s more of a deliberate piecey look with some rough strands creating a unique and interesting touch. It’s nice to see how everything compliments her hair, tattoos, and jewelry. A decent haircut should blend in to some extent, and the way this one blends in is great.

#24: Platinum Blonde Side-Part with Tapered Nape
A very clean and polished look. The structure comes from the side part, and the tapered nape keeps everything tidy around the neck, something a lot of women mention wanting when they go short for the first time. She is clearly keeping up with her appointments as the well-maintained and even platinum blonde is due for a touch up. With blonde pixies this short, a good toning conditioner between salon visits makes a noticeable difference.

#25: Salt and Pepper Swept-Back Pixie
The salt and pepper pattern adds depth so this cut will not require any color work. The sides are shorter and the top is long enough to be swept back and to the side. You can see how the darker pieces underneath give the silver strands on top an almost highlighted effect. This is one of those cuts where the gray is really doing something, and the stylist was clever enough to let it.

#26: Blush Pink Tousled Pixie
Here day is a blush pink with, what seems to be, a white or super light gray base. It appears soft and intentional, not abrasive. The grey, and pale pink skimming color wash looks simple. The hair on the top is tousled and has a sense of comfort. It makes it look as if she woke up, and it just looked so good. If grey and color curious, then a pastel wash like this is a perfect medium. It is super easy and calm. The pink may go muddy after a while, but a purple shampoo will keep it from going muddy up between touch-ups.

#27: Wispy Silver Textured Crop
Her outfit is really short and really textured which suits her beautifully. The cat-eye glasses have a touch of style, but so does the haircut. I also think there’s a nice disarray to the top layers that precludes it looking too polished, which seems perfect for someone with a more playful personality. Look at the wild pattern on her blouse, this is a woman who knows that short hair and personality are not mutually exclusive.
