The last time a client asked for ‘pencil straight’ hair I remember watching her scroll through the 1997s on Instagram. Believe it or not, the photo was better than most of the inspo photos I get today. Thin/clean lines, juxtaposed with a confident woman is a phenomenon. No amount of layering or texturing will give better results. These types of cuts are supposed to be bold, which is also why they work so well on women in their 50s, because by then, you’ve stopped apologizing and started owning it.
A couple of years ago, I had a client who was a retired architect. I say ‘was’ because I haven’t seen her since the pandemic, sadly. She would come in every 6 weeks and have a blunt bob. It got to a point where it felt like she could draft a blueprint with her bob. She told me that in her 30s she tried to add some volume, then in her 40s she tried to add some movement. And then in her 50s, she realised that her hair had been trying to lie flat and behave the entire time, and that she should have just let it. Hair that is straight and cut well has a sophistication that is effortless. If you sat in my chair today, these are the 25 cuts I would recommend.
#1: Clean Blunt Cut That Actually Moves
While this hairstyle may seem easy to achieve, it does come with a fair amount of difficulty. The cut gives fine to medium hair the visual weight that it is often lacking, and also provides lift without creating a helmet effect. The chin length cut will enhance your jawline if you have an oval or heart shaped face and it will do this without you having to do anything. My only suggestion is to keep a smoothing serum in your bathroom as that length tends to fray easily and the blunt ends will be very noticeable.
#2 Warm Brown Bob with Just Enough Layer
Your hair will be a warm brown color and about shoulder length. In regard to layers, there will be a few layers added, but this isn’t going to be the typical layered haircut where a ton of layers get added. This is the haircut I like to give to clients who say they want to look like themselves, just better. It’s honestly the biggest compliment a haircut can receive. The layers will be pretty minimal. Their purpose is to break up the ends so they don’t look like a curtain. If you want it to look grown out, you’ll need to come in for a trim every six to eight weeks.
#3 Straight Bob with Bangs That Don’t Overwhelm
The bangs are doing nothing less than what bangs are expected to do. They soften the forehead and add some completeness to the look. It’s a mid-length, just above the shoulders and the golden highlights look nice and warm up the complexion without screaming “I just colored my hair!” It’s also a really good choice if you want to look a bit brighter with the season change coming up. The straight finish will also show every split end you own so don’t skip your standing appointments, that ones a must.

I like the softer, rounded styles, and the way the bangs are done here looks very friendly and inviting. It doesn’t feel generic or boring at all. I also like how the gentle wave of the model’s hair adds texture. If your hair is stick straight, it will look different, so keep that in mind. Heart-shaped faces will have an easier time with this style. The fullness the style adds will balance their chin, especially if it’s narrow. The bangs will definitely need a trim every 3-4 weeks, and I know that is not something people like to hear, but hair grows so it is something that everyone has to deal with.

I admire this style for its simplicity and elegance, refusing to try to be anything more than a good haircut. The subtle layers will allow you to blow it out straight or air dry it if you have that sort of texture. This will be versatile. The length sits just above the shoulders. That is the length I find most women end up going back to. It’s long enough to pull back but short enough to feel like a real style. This will need regular trims to keep it from becoming shapeless, but that’s the same with pretty much everything worth having.
#11 Glossy Straight Bob with Soft Layers
This haircut is great because the shine on your hair attracts most people’s attention. Straight bobs with minimal layering may appear to be low effort, but they are deceptively challenging to pull off. The hair has to look healthy for the haircut to look expensive, chic, and editorial instead of unremarkable. If you know your hair is naturally not going to be shiny enough, then you probably will want to be doing a gloss treatment to maintain that editorial look to the hair. This style is a great example of how all those factors come together, and people over 50 are going to really struggle to pull off this look without a gloss treatment.

These layers shown here are designed to fall just under the chin and highlight the cheekbones, which is the difference between an average haircut and a good haircut. A fully blunt edge with no softness can be quite severe though. This sits best with medium density straight hair. Also, keep in mind to trim often as a blunt cut that has grown out a quarter of an inch is no longer a blunt cut. It’s just hair that needs to be cut.
