I remember my first client who asked for “just a few highlights”… Little do they know, strategically placed halves can do a lot. As I sat in front of them and separated the hair, I always loved the way the base color came alive. It’s the same for all brunettes, with a little potential to show some of the deepest base elements.
My favorite thing about partial highlights on brown hair is there’s no such thing as a full foil, so you won’t have to spend 5 hours in the chair, and you won’t leave feeling like a different person. You’ll feel like a more sophisticated you. A few years back I had a lawyer client who was terrified of looking done. We started off, in my opinion, with what was eight foils around the face, and then she went for a few in the crown. We shed some (a little) happy tears, because it was painfully obvious that her hair had transformed. That’s the goal of this technique, and the fifteen looks showcased below are all in that ballpark. Each one is different, depending on the hair and what it needs, ranging from subtle to a little more.

#1: Luxurious Brunette Balayage with Subtle Dimension
It’s wonderful to see all the elements working together so seamlessly here. The balayage highlights are placed beneath the top layers of hair, and with the finer texture, the effect is super light and airy. The layers help the color shift and offer great dimension. What I really love most about this look is the restraint. No one went overboard, and the hair really does look like it’s been on a fabulous vacation. Maintaining this look does require some effort, and clients will need to sit back in the chair for toning treatments every few months, but for this look, it’s really a small price to pay.

#2: Rich Chestnut Waves with Seamless Layers
I like the color very much, particularly the dark chestnut. It has nice warmth so it doesn’t appear flat in any lighting. The layers give the shape more movement, and are cut to allow the hair to swing without losing volume. If you have medium to thick hair and it’s currently all one length, you can start to get some idea of the difference good layering can make. Of course, those waves won’t be happening on their own so you just have to grab a curling iron and a bend-holding tool to get the same look. Lastly, the angled cut does a nice job of creating a face frame, and while it’s not super obvious, it definitely contributes to the polished look.

#3: Softly Layered Brunette Waves with Subtle Highlights
Like Great Lengths Hair Extensions, this hairstyle tends to be really easy to wear. It has a fresh look & gives the impression of being casual & effortless. The mid-length style is perfect because it is long enough to give some movement, but not too long so that it becomes heavy and lifeless. The face framing pieces of hair are well placed and the highlights are ideal. They are light, giving just enough texture so that the hair looks good when the light reflects off of it. The most important thing is that these types of layers need to be styled so if you don’t enjoy spending a lot of time on your hair, you may need to invest in a round brush more often than you think.

#4: Modern Brunette Waves with Subtle Dimension
The warm and cool tones work well together, and sit perfectly in the middle. This means they suit more skin tones than you’d expect. The waves are soft and the color seems to flow. The contrast isn’t massive against her natural color, but it’s intentional; it’s dimension without disruption. The only downside is that this kind of balancing act in color shifts and fades so you’ll have to keep up with appointments to maintain that fresh look.

#5: Subtle Dimensional Highlights for Effortless Brunette Waves
Thank you for the placement on this. It is easy to see the thought that went into how her hair falls naturally because the lighter pieces hit right where the wave opens which adds more depth and looks less like it was painted. This is the type of result that makes people say “your hair looks amazing” without knowing what was done, and that is truly the best compliment to receive on a client’s behalf. The brunette base is also rich enough to stand on its own, but that will be something to consider because a color-depositing conditioner in between visits will help everything feel more saturated and intentional.

#6: Chic Bronde Waves with Detailed Highlights
Bronde may sound like a made-up marketing term but once you see it done correctly, you understand why it deserves its own name. This is in that realm where you really can’t tell if she is a brunette or a blonde. The detailed highlights throughout the mid-lengths give it so much texture and interest. The waves also prevent it from feeling too “color appointment” and more like “this is just how my hair is”. It’s a medium dense head of hair that is cooperating with the style so everything sits nicely. I’d say this is about as low maintenance as highlighted hair gets, although freshening up the tone every eight weeks will keep it from drifting too warm or too brassy.

#7: Warm Brunette Waves with Luminous Highlights
I keep returning to this look. There is a radiance that captivates me. Highlights appear to be so naturally lit from inside due to the soft balayage. The color transitions are so smooth that you can’t see where the color goes. It is even more important to have that smooth blend because you can’t cover harsh lines with the lower density. The look is very sun-kissed and gives an impression of someone who has been spending weekends outdoors, which is a lovely vibe for the summer. The color grow out is very forgiving. This is why I recommend clients to get a balayage to avoid feeling restricted to six-week appointments.

#8: Stylish Brunette Waves with Dimensional Highlights
This is what you call hair that has earned its length! The highlights placed throughout the middle and ends of the hair create that cascading colour effect. The layering at the bottom prevents it from looking too heavy or too blunt and the wave pattern is loose enough to have that relaxed feel without looking too undone. What works so well for this look is that it doesn’t try to do too much. The base being dark, the highlights warm, and the cut being simple, but well thought out is perfection. Sometimes, that is all you need. The ends will probably need to be restructured if excessive styling is happening. Waving this with a tool regularly will require a good heat protectant but otherwise it is not too difficult to live with.

#9: Dimensional Brunette Layers with Subtle Highlights
I notice the health and softness of the hair especially more than the color technique and standing up in style while looking up close. The highlights have been placed in such a way that adds dimension to the layers without pulling focus to them, and the waves are created to give enough motion to the hair so that it doesn’t look flat. This is the kind of hair that is easy enough to throw up in a ponytail, down, and stays looking clean and nice even good on day three. Most of my clients really want this kind of versatility in their hair even if they don’t say it. If you have fine hair this will mean the definition you get from the layers will fall out quicker than you are hoping but on medium and thick hair this is going to be a super stunning low maintenance style.

#10: Elegant Brunette Waves with Subtle Dimensional Highlights
The highlights create an illusion when it comes to light and shadows almost like hair is talking to the light. The layered waves in the hair are flattering, and make the hair look easy to manage. The hair at this volume feels good and the waves are cut to provide balance to the hair, without the layers looking obvious. The untouched, darker, brunette highlights in the hair look natural, take the focus off of the highlights, and make the highlights look muted. From afar the hair looks beautiful and comprehensive and it is not common to see this without looking at the highlights. The colorist nailed it.

#11: Soft Brunette Waves with Subtle Dimensional Highlights
First-time highlight clients often get this look. It’s not going to alarm anyone at work on Monday, and it gives you a taste of what a little dimension can do without committing in any direction. The waves are soft and the highlights are warm and sun-kissed, bringing life to brown hair. The body and movement should be excellent, especially with medium to thick hair. Just a note that the face framing pieces are the first to change colors, so using a sulfate-free shampoo will help to extend that.

#12: Glamorous Brunette Layers with Bold Bangs
This style is a big commitment and I can tell it will pay off! It’s the bangs that really make the difference though. Not just any bangs, these will change the whole vibe of the look from a simple long layered brunette to something truly stand out. And the highlights throughout the layers add such great movement so that the cut does not feel heavy. She has thick wavy hair and it really does this cut justice. But let me be honest, this look will take a lot of maintenance. Bangs will require upkeep, and if thick wavy hair needs some guidance. So if you like an air dry and go, then this is not the best route. If you’re willing to spend about 15 minutes with a blow dry and some brushes, then this will definitely pay off! I love the drama this style adds!

#13: Warm Brunette Waves with Subtle Golden Highlights
The golden tones in this brunette are beautiful. The highlights are warm enough to possibly be considered caramel, but they stay on the good side of that line. The haircut enhances the overall look with good layering and shape. The mid-lengths are also lifted, leaving nothing weighed down so the hair has a beautiful, healthy glow. This look is also very seasonal versatile and can be worn in both January and July. The golden highlights will fade quickly in the summer and will shift first if not cared for, but that is a downside to this look.

#14: Chic Brunette Waves with Textured Highlights
This one stands out due to how highlights are placed. They almost look woven in instead of painted which gives it an almost tactile quality that you can see as well as touch. The mid-length cut is doing her a lot of favors because it is long enough for the waves to develop but not so long that the ends start to look thin or scraggly. I think this would look amazing on someone with a natural wave already because then you’re enhancing what’s already happening instead of fighting for a shape. The lighter pieces will need some maintenance as they grow, but the grow-out pattern on something like this tends to be pretty graceful.

#15: Layered Brunette Curls with Soft Caramel Highlights
I love curls, and these curls are done perfectly! Every layer has been cut to spring up individually instead of in groups, so it adds a lot of life and movement to the style. The caramel highlights are situated to catch the light at the top of the curls, which is very important for curly hair because color looks different when hair is curled versus straightened. For those with brown hair and looking to add some warmth without losing depth, this is the kind of caramel highlight placement you want. Just make sure to keep those curls hydrated with leave in conditioner and they’ll look just as good between cuts!
