Way back when I was still pretty new to hair styling, like only 3 or 4 years experience, one lady came in to my salon with an old picture of herself with a really big round afro that her aunt did. She said all her aunt did to create the afro was pick it out and use some coconut oil. The lady wanted to recreate the image again, but since that photo, she had done a lot of things to her hair. These things included relaxers, hair dye, years of heat straightening, and she was just beginning her natural hair journey. For that first appointment, we spent about 2 hours talking about what was realistic and what her hair could do at that moment. I remember thinking to myself, nobody talks about this part of the job, having to speak to a client before doing any part of the hair service, or as we say in the industry, “the cut.”
There’s a lot you can do with natural hair, but it’s important to remember that having options doesn’t mean that every silhouette will be a good fit for every person. I have had clients come in with the same reference photo. Because of a million reasons, such as their curl pattern or even the shape of their head, they left with completely different looks. That is not a failure. That is simply how it is. The styles I’m showing here are ones that I’ve done, studied closely, or ones that I’ve obsessed over from a distance at some point. Honestly, I have more thoughts on some styles than others.
#1: Rounded Layered Chin-Length Curly Bob with Curtain Ringlet Bangs
This is a chin-length rounded bob with curtain ringlet bangs. These coily bangs look like tight 3C/4A coils. The bangs curtain out to the sides. The interior layers are point cut shorter, which gives a halo effect, and creates a nice shape around heart and oval face shapes. To keep those bangs in place, you should use a strong curl clumping gel. The challenge, however, is the shrinkage is very real. This will require daily maintenance to keep the bangs clumped, to keep the product from building up, and your stylist really will need to do some strategic thinning to avoid it getting boxy too quickly.
#2: Sleek Side-to-Side Flat Twists into a Full Low Puff
There’s a lot of thought behind this design because it might look simple at first. The style features a polished side-to-side flat twist crown that feeds into a short to mid nape puff. It’s also great for coily 4A-4B hair with high density. I appreciate the natural silver strands and that little baby curl tucked by the ear. Those details make it feel personal. It’s a great protective style and the best thing is that you won’t have to battle with it each morning. You’ll need medium-hold gel to keep the twists defined, and please keep the tension on the edges low because that’s where I see the most damage from styles.
#3: High Puff with a Scarf Band and Laid Edges
Use this style to get the high puff effect. The only difference is you will have that soft scarf band pulling everything up and back and is also good for edges to be laid nice and neat. It works for short and mid-length 4A through 4C coils with thick density. On this heart-shaped face, it just works. The volume you get is instant and really showcases your texture with minimal manipulation. Just a word of caution about the band; if you wrap it too tight, you’re going to stress those edges and over time, that becomes a problem. Position it about an inch behind the hairline. Use light gel for the baby hairs and finger-coil the puff to the shape you want. It is important to keep moisture in the coils because this type of coil dries out fast when it’s all exposed like that.
#4: Sculpted Coily Knot Updo with Cowrie Shell and Beaded Braids
I could literally look at this forever. This is short-to-mid length 4B/4C hair style into uniform two-strand rope knots over tiny cornrows, with two beaded braided tendrils, and a cowrie shell right in the center. The whole thing looks pretty ceremonial as if it has a purpose beyond just looking good which it does look amazing, It’s protective and low-heat which I appreciate and on an oval face it really beautifully frames everything. Now, the reality is this requires a lot of knowledge with tensioning because if those knots are too tight at the base then you’re gonna get stress breakage, and having the knots be uniform takes a lot. They also tend to frizz at the base once you take them out. If you’re using pre stretched synthetic hair for the wraps and a lightweight edge oil, that helps with both the shine and uniformity.
#5: Asymmetrical Micro-Loc Angled Bob with Little Metallic Beads
This look is a chin to shoulder asymmetrical angled bob with micro-locs a little longer on the left, and a soft nape taper with smoothed out edges. This shape is also very flattering for an oval face. The daily styling is dream as nothing is required, and there are light styling options to pin it up or twist it back for a change. The tiny cute metallic beads pose a snagging problem, and will make chemical or color changes a lot trickier if you go that route. I recommend some internal deweighting and a blunt perimeter so that the angle stays sharp and intentional.
#6: Mid-Length Defined Ringlets with Caramel Balayage
I really like this! It’s grazing the shoulder with a softly graduated cut 3B-3C defined ringlets, medium to high density with subtle face-framing layers and everything falls into place perfectly. It’s probably styled with low-tension twist outs and good curl clumping products to get that much definition. The natural crown lift from the alternating coil pattern is gorgeous and provides rounded shape without the work. The caramel balayage is pretty and the lift is nice, but it may raise your ends’ porosity and you’ll likely need some bond repair treatments to keep it from getting crunchy. Moisture and protein balancing must be done with the color and it can add a bit of weight, elongating the coils more than you might expect.
#7: Voluminous Rounded Coil Cut with Face-Framing Tendrils
This style features medium rounded coils with some longer pieces in the face framing area. The tendrils beautifully drape down. On an oval face, they give a nice fullness with the really dense 3B/3C spirals. The secret is the dry curl-by-curl layering which will help with the rounding and keeping the curl clumps defined. You will get the fullness and soft framing and great volume, but keep in mind there will be noticeable shrinkage and daily styling will be needed to maintain that definition. When you sit in the chair, ask for perimeter weight release and shaped tailored curls.
#8: Structured Rounded Coil Afro with Soft Graduation Around the Face
This haircut might look easy, however a lot of precision goes into it. It’s a rounded-coil afro, with soft chin-length face-framing layering. This particular afro is dense, coily, and roughly a level 4, and is on an oval face. The edge is blunt and dry, with a little point cutting, along with a subtle taper in the front to keep the edges down. The coils are very well-formed, and the silhouette is bold and round. This is the kind of afro that you can part in a lot of different ways. However, this hair is thirsty. It will need a good amount of shrinkage control to make sure it puffs up evenly. I see a slight elongation in the inner crown that adds some forward weight. If you want to achieve that look, selective stretching with a diffuser is exactly what you need.
#9: Rounded Shoulder-Length Coil Cut with an Eye-Grazing Fringe
This is naturally styled without any blow-drying. The fringe is super close to the eyes and it actually looks nice. This looks great on oval! This is an example of a rounded shoulder length cut on a pretty dense 3C-4A coil hair type with a lot of density. I would cut this dry to shape it curl-by-curl, with long layers and a graduation. I would point cut to remove bulk from the sides while ensuring you have the volume where you want it. You’ll have a nice framed effect and a manageable fringe which does require some daily curl defining product and an occasional wet set shaper to stop the fringe from going everywhere.
#10: Rounded Defined-Coil Bob with a Deep Diagonal Part
This style is a chin-length rounded coil bob with a deep diagonal part, tapered nape, and dense 3B-3C tight curls. I find the root-sculpting along the part particularly interesting. It gives hair lift in a way that is even healthier for the hair than teasing or backcombing. The volume is big and looks natural. They designed the face framing for oval and heart shapes. To keep the curls separated, you will have to shingle, or put a good curl cream in. The cut has to be very precise. In addition to a good point cut, you should use slide cutting in the interior to remove bulk without damaging the coil definition. It’s almost a wash-and-go-and-forget-about-it bob, but not quite.
#11 Warm Copper Curly Taper with Sculpted Side Flat-Twists
This one has personality! It’s a cropped taper with about 1.5-3 inches on top, tight 4A/4B coils of medium to high density, plus three sculpted flat-twists forming a crescent scalp contour that’s super interesting and really wearable. It’s super flattering on an oval face. The lift is nice, the curl is definitely there, and it feels lightweight (which a lot of my clients love). But that vibrant copper is going to fade, so you’ll need to gloss it regularly and use color-safe products. The defined coils will also require a holding cream or custard to manage frizz and control shrinkage. I would recommend a soft interior taper, micro-part contouring, and root-shadow glaze to stretch the time between color appointments.
#12: High Puff with Sleek Laid Edges
I have a high puff that’s elevated and on 4C coils. It’s about 3-4 inches when shrunken, so about 7-8 inches when stretched. I also have extreme density and an oval face. The positioning of the puff gives really good vertical lift and even lengthens the overall look of the hair. The style is quick to do and super protective while showing off the definition of coils and styled baby hairs, and it looks polished. You need firm edge control and if you do this style often, you need to be careful with the tension because of the risk of breakage around the hairline. Moisture is also important. I like to place the puff slightly forward, above the crown and not directly in the center, and that’s the detail that really makes it pop.
#13: Sculpted Rounded Afro with a Soft Halo
The coils are very thick, rounded, and dense 4A/4B coils. The face is oval. The shape is nice and clean, with a small taper on the sides that softens into a halo, and is best achieved with a pick or with dry point cuts. What I appreciate about this is that there is no waiting. The frame, the volume, and the daily styling is minimal. The cons are that shrinkage can be heavy, the washing and detangling can take longer than you think, and if you are thinking about high lift color, I suggest glazing or low lift tones because this texture does not lighten well.
#14: Short Tapered Pixie with Defined Mini Coils
This style is adorable! A short pixie with an inch and half to two inches of tightly coiled 4A/4B hair on top, clipped to a two or three at the nape. The density is pretty high and even with this length, you still get that full rounded shape. This style is great for oval face shapes, and it’s lightweight, with great curl definition, and a quick wash and go. Expect a lot of shrinkage. Clumping with a curl custard or gel and low-heat diffusing is a must. There’s an elongated spiral at the hairline that creates a soft point and I love that detail, it keeps the style from looking too uniform.
#15: Shoulder-Length Curly Shag with Wispy Finger-Coiled Fringe
Curly finger coils with a light bang fringe look great, particularly on oval hair shapes. This person’s hair is 3B-3C with a medium to high density. Perimeter point-cutting, light internal underlayer, dry twist cut shaping for ringlets, and subtle caramel micro lights for depth (not super obvious) were done. This type of cut gives that frame and lift that so many people desire. The tradeoff is that the styling is very high maintenance (you’ll need a diffuser) and the foils will go brassy unless they get glossed regularly.
#16: Voluminous Burgundy High Puff with Wrapped Frontal Band
So much drama and I love it! This is a high burgundy puff style wig, and at the front, it has a wrapped band made of 4B/4C coils that are dense and roughly six to eight inches when stretched. The flat-twist wrap gives a faux side bang look, and two face-framing tendrils help soften and frame an oval face. It’s very dramatic and gives a lot of lift, so also low manipulation and protective. The definition in the coils is very strong. Here’s the reality though, single-process burgundy on porous coils fade faster than most people expect, and you’ll also need some targeted hydration to keep everything from drying out. The wrap will loosen over time so it will need to be retightened periodically.
#17: Rounded Chin-Length Natural Curls with a Soft Fringe
For dense 4A-4B coils in an oval face shape, I suggest a chin-length rounded cut with a soft, natural fringe. It will be dry cut curl by curl with subtle internal layering, with neither too many or too few layers, that is to be executed with great care. The end result is a great wash-and-go style with a nice shape, and a single center curl that sits like a mini bang which I think is super cute. Because there is a lot of coil shrinkage, the sides will look bulky if they aren’t tapered, so strategic moisture and some thinning are key to improving this.
#18 Rounded Finger-Coiled Short Afro with Defined Ringlets
This style has ear-length hair, tight finger coils, and ringlets, with a side-sweep at the elevation of the crown. On an oval face with 3c/4a texture and a high density, it certainly gives plenty of volume as well as nicely defined clump curls. I really like the Denman brush and finger-coil work that creates this level of definition, and the cheekbone framing is cool. However, there is definitely shrinkage, and you may need to do some targeted moisture and cast removal to soften things up after styling.
#19 Rounded Layered Afro with a Face-Framing Spiral
Chin-to-shoulder length rounded afro with a striking face-framing spiral curl that mesmerizes, on tight 3C-4A coils with Extremely High Density. Best cut on dry hair with tapered interior layers and contouring at the perimeter to manage bulk, and help the curls clump the way they prefer. You get instantaneous framing, excellent volume, and defined curl shape without much effort. Shrinkage is very noticeable; so, stick to lightweight, moisture-based products because anything heavier will weigh the curls down, and you’ll lose all that bounciness.
#20 Forward-Weighted Side-Part Shoulder-Length Natural Curls
This shoulder-length hairstyle features soft internal layers with a deep side part that pulls weight to the front. On an oval face and high-density 4A/4B coils, this look is quite flattering. This hairstyle gives you volume, a face frame, and no heat is required. To do this, you need internal layers, curl-clumping gel, and to diffuse at a low heat. This hair could be worn in any style, but it will most likely need daily maintenance, and a heavier serum will be required to hold it. If you’re looking for something that you can literally just “wake up and go,” this is not the one.
#21: Twisted Updo with Braided Sides
The fun part of this style is having big spiral curls on top for volume and fun, and then some neat braids on the sides for structure and to keep everything in place. It also looks great on shoulder length and thick hair. For oval and round faces, the lifted top and flatter sides your these types of curls really as well. You could wear these curls to brunch or even a wedding! Try using a curling cream for the twisted braids to help define the curls and keep everything moisturized.
#22: Sleek Asymmetrical Bob with Side-Swept Bangs
Even though I have my issues with uneven bobs, since they often detract from the overall visual impact of the hair, I would say this is an exception. I love how refined this cut is, as well as how lovely the effect is having the cut go to the shoulders, plus the side bangs help with the overall movement, and they complement rather than contradict the hair’s natural texture. Given that this particular look is quite light reflective (as is the texture of the hair), along with the extra dimension from the side part, I would say it works better on oval and heart face shapes than on round or square face shapes. I think the finishing of the cut looks to be the most important part of the style because once you have this cut, I’m sure that not much else is needed other than perhaps a nice smoothing serum.
#23: Twisted Bob with Defined Curls
This bob haircut mid-length, defining the face with cute vibes and end curls, gives a nice look. Fine to medium density works best for this style as it doesn’t overwhelm and enhances the hair. Creating a small asymmetric look, the side-part is a nice touch. Twists take a long time to install, but they last a long time, and the end result is worth it. If you don’t mind sitting for a bit, the time it takes will pay off.
#24: Layered Natural Curls with Volume
These curls are mid-length with layers for added volume and movement. The natural texture looks enhanced with some product, although not overloaded. This cut frames nicely for round or oval faces, and the layers help control the density. This way, the hair doesn’t just puff out into one shape. You actually get dimension. I won’t lie, but maintenance for this style does take real dedication to moisturizing and defining products. You can’t just wash and hope for the best. However, the result is genuinely gorgeous if you are willing to put the time in.
#25: Curly Afro with Subtle Highlights
The first thing I noticed was the highlights. They add depth to the tight curls without saying, “I just got my hair colored.” The medium length gives you options; you can wear it down or pull it back, and the thickness makes it look full and healthy. I want to say that color-treated curls need extra attention. Most people expect going in, but the maintenance to keep it looking vibrant and feeling soft is more than that. But if you’re up for it, the effect is beautiful. It gives the curls warmth that looks good.
#26: Twisted Braids Styled into a Half-Up Ponytail
I really like the design. The neat, braided sections make a nice pattern against the scalp, and then it goes into a half-up ponytail that shows the nice curly texture. The thickness means you get proper volume in the ponytail section. This style has the bonus of lasting several weeks (as long as you keep the braids looking fresh. That said, you will probably have to touch up the braids to keep them from looking fuzzy at the base. But with a style that gives you a sophisticated look and so much durability, this is really good!
#27: Short Tapered Cut with a Clean Side Part
This short, tapered cut with a defined side part is a great example of how a haircut can create a neat and professional look. The hair is cut close so it shows fine to medium density which gives a sleek and comfortable finish. Longer styles don’t highlight facial features like this cut does, and it adds contrast to the overall look, which is especially dominant on oval or heart face shapes. This hairstyle is easier to maintain because you only need to get regular trims to keep the style. Hair at this length grows out quickly so you should be ready for frequent trips to the salon. A shine serum will give a polished look without looking greasy.
#28: Twisted Updo with Braided Detail and a Structured Bun
This hairstyle features a unique bun with twists that adds an extra touch of style and elegance and also some practicality. The updo is particularly lovely with medium length hair because you can see the most curls with the hair up. This style works well for oval or heart shaped faces because it creates a nice elongated look. The braids also provide some detail without making the style too busy. There is some extra time added onto doing the hairstyle, but for the amount of sophistication it gives and the added protection it provides to the hair, I would say it is worth the time.
#29: Textured Curly Mohawk with Tapered Sides
Of course, I enjoy a good mohawk, and this one’s nice. The coils on top are nice and lively, and the tapered sides contrast well. The design is like a whole outfit. Length is medium, curls are medium, and the density is medium so it has body without being too much. For oval or heart-shaped face structures, the emphasis on the center of the head with the exposed temples is super flattering. While I do think it looks nice, it must be said that keeping those curls looking nice requires a good amount of maintenance.
#30: Braided Mohawk with Twisted Curls on Top
The cousin of the textured mohawk is this one. The side braids with the twisted curls on top create a great variety of textures. This is medium length with medium to thick density. It is both playful and structured, and has a great deal of contrast. While the braids on one side provide a clean graphic edge against the scalp, the curls bring in the softness. In terms of maintenance, the curls need to be defined and will require more attention while the braids just hold up. For people looking to make a statement with their natural texture, this is a bold choice.
#31: Curly Bob with Rich Auburn and Golden Highlights
My fave thing is the coloring on this rich auburn with gold highlights that are arranged to follow the curl pattern. The way the coils move makes the color shift so the whole thing really pops. I also love the defined curls at medium length, with thicker hair, and the bob shape keeps it all contained while still being full. The way the color placement describes the shape of each curl is super awesome. This color does take maintenance, but it’s week once it’s fresh.
#32: Braided Twists with Curly Ends
Neat face-framing braided twists finished with defined curls at the ends on coily hair of medium to high density. It shows the natural curl pattern at the ends of the hair where the curl pattern is visible. The neat twists and curly ends are playful and soften the entire look. With time you will notice some frizz, and maintenance is part of the deal. If you want a low maintenance style that embraces your texture, look no further because this is the one.
#33: Bantu Knots on Natural Hair
Bantu knots are always different and exciting which is why I love them. They look great and are very protective. They look great when done correctly, I mean look at this set! It is done on thick, medium length, healthy hair, and a healthy scalp. The knots are firm but not too tight. They give you lots of options and reduce heat damage. You can rock the knots for a finished look, or take them out for a pretty knot-out. Just know, the installation time is a big commitment. If you sleep without a satin bonnet, expect the knots to loosen a lot!
#34: Tapered Cut with Braided Accents
The tapered style is nice because it frames the face while letting the natural curls and braided accents shine, plus it keeps the hair in place on busier days. It works really well with medium length hair, and even more so with body, texture, and volume to create a fully finished look ideal for oval or heart-shaped faces. The braids are a nice functional detail, rather than just for decoration. It does require a bit more maintenance in terms of the shape of the cut, but the daily styling is pretty manageable which I always appreciate in a cut.
#35: High Puff with Braided Accents
The high puff look with braids is both casual and polished, and the braids are a nice touch that elevates the look. It suits people with medium to thick hair density and is great for round or oval face shapes. The puff is relatively low maintenance, whereas the braids take a bit more upkeep to look good. For definition and moisture, I recommend a light curl cream on the puff to keep those curls looking good.
#36: Twisted Updo Showcasing Defined Curls
I find the sections of hair to be particularly interesting. The design that is made with the twisted medium length sections is quite visible and adds to the volume and texture of the updo. The thicker the hair is the fuller the look, and the twists are what elevate the style from just “hair pulled up.” This style also complements oval and heart-shaped faces. Lots of maintenance is required to keep the twists neat and defined, so it’s not a style you can just leave for weeks, but it’s such a waste to let it go when the craftsmanship is so beautiful when it is freshly done.
#37: Twisted Lob with Defined Texture
The defined twists will create dimension and texture without following a curl pattern naturally fighting the way. It’s manageable density medium, with a full look that is nothing weighted and is full nothing woven. For oval heart-shaped faces the silhouette is flattering elongated soft but still kind of. The twists once they’re in low-maintenance relatively are though defining the hold some styling product to because over time loosen up they can. There technique real even though effortless it is a style that feels behind.
#38: Braided Updo with Beaded Accents
These different styles of cornrows and the added beads really helps bring these styles to life. These styles are complimented by hair of medium length and styled very tight. On a different note, I would like to mention that this style may not fit everyone since some people’s hair is finer or if their scalp is more sensitive. Nonetheless, if this style is suitable for your hair, the contrast of the beads and braids is amazing and this style is great for any special occasion or honestly, whenever you would like.
#39: High Ponytail with Twisted Locks
The high ponytail has some intentional twisting and the color from dark to light adds some dimension which can be easily overlooked. The hair is medium thick, and there are side braids of a pretty design under the ponytail. This is a nice way to show off the natural texture while giving an up-done and out-of-the-way look. I won’t pretend that it is a lot of upkeep to keep the twists looking defined and fresh. For oval or round shaped faces, this style provides more height and a more flattering structure.
#40: Voluminous Curly Afro with Defined Texture
This full, fuzzy, curly afro has a lot of energy! The most important thing is that the curls are healthy and well-defined. It gives a youthful, open look for round and oval face shapes, and you can even dress it up or down. Those curls are super high-maintenance, and a good curling cream will help with the definition but won’t weigh your hair down. The result is a look that says you just rolled out of bed and styled your hair, but you knew you actually spent a lot of time on it!
#41: Curly Mohawk with Undercut Design
A mohawk with an undercut is super bold. The sides are shaved and there are hair designs cut into them. The hair designs will get a lot of attention! All the curls will create a great focus and finish off the dramatic look of the cut. A thick, medium length is required for the hair on top, as the curls will help to give the mohawk shape with out looking thin. The undercut will need touch ups every 2 to 3 weeks to keep the look sharp. This may be annoying. If you want a dramatic look and style, and don’t mind frequently maintaining the cut, it will be great.
#42: Textured Tapered Cut with Defined Curls on Top
The curls on the top of the tapered cut are soft and nicely shaped which makes the cut look softer, especially compared to the cropped sides which makes for a good contrast. Natural curls like this can be medium-dense, highly voluminous, and even manageable, and are very tight. This style can look very youthful and clean on oval and heart shaped faces. Regular use of styling products will be necessary to keep the curls defined and clumping will not happen naturally without help. The shape of the cut is strong, and if you keep up with it, the result will always be polished.
#43: Long Curly Layers with Warm Highlights
I really love how the highlights give the curls more depth. The highlights look great, and the curls frame the face perfectly. They are soft and playful at the perfect length. It is a face framing, layered haircut that looks playful and fun. The maintenance is moderate as those curls will require some moisturizing, especially the ends that are lighter, to keep them from getting dry. For oval or heart-shaped faces, it really is one of those styles where the color and the cut are so intertwined that they really can’t be separated.
#44: Tapered Cut with a Braided Undercut
I like the braided undercut detail and how it adds to the cut. I like the thought that goes into small and unique details like that. Ideally, hair is of the thicker density and longer length for added versatility. This works for round and oval face shapes because the tapered sides slim everything down while the top adds height. Overall maintenance is on the lower end but the braids will need upkeep more frequently than the cut itself. This style adds a touch of the unexpected without going too far.
#45: Twisted Bob with Defined Curls
This medium-length bob is extra bonus for framing the face, especially if you have cheekbones to show off! It also gives a fun, bouncy look to the style but with coarser hair they will get easy and the natural texture won’t be messed with. Maintenance will be needed for sharp curls but this style will look great on every face shape. If you’re thinking of adding some color to the style, I would actually encourage it because the dimension it creates through the twisted sections. It is really pretty!
#46: Textured Updo with Defined Curls Gathered into a Bun
I like this updo because it keeps some of the texture, and I think the way it has some of the curls visible is great. The volume and the curl pattern show through, which is really nice. This works well for medium length hair and round or oval face shapes. This style does take some time to get it to look this polished, and you want to keep those curls defined while they’re up, a moisturizing spray or serum will work. It really shows how much effort you put into this look. It shows that you tried while also looking really effortless.
#47: Twisted Bun with Braided Accents
The clean parts, defined twists, and braid accents make this style shine. It looks great, and your ends are protective tucked away. It’ll work for medium/thick hair density. I love styles that work for different situations. You don’t want to do all that work for it to only be wearable to one place. If you have fine hair, this style may not give you the volume you want, as it relies on density to fill out the bun. A hair accessory can add a little something if you want to dress it up more.
#48: Braided Top into a Curly Ponytail
The first thing I notice are the braids on the sides. The detail here is impressive! The braids lead into a beautiful curly ponytail that showcases its natural texture. The hair length can be medium/long or even short and the braids can be tighter. The ponytail has real volume and fullness on medium to high density hair. The braids do require upkeep to stay fresh looking, that’s the trade off with a style this detailed, but the effect is playful and versatile. It lets you embrace your natural curls while having some structure on top!
#49: Long Twisted Rope Braids with Curly Ends
