While the name may sound strange, when you see mushroom blonde in real life, you might want to stop everything and head to the salon. As a color, it’s a pleasant, warm blend: not too much brown or too much blonde. There’s enough warm to, as most people say, “not wash anybody out,” but enough ash to be a cool blend. It never fails that I will have a client talk for 20 minutes explaining what they want, and with a lightbulb go off and describe, “mushroom blonde,” and realize, they didn’t even know what they were talking about.
Having a color that looks *that good*, but still looks like you made no effort, is incredibly rare. A while ago I had a client show me an old picture of herself from college. She was trying to go back to her natural color, and when I matched it, it was mushroom blonde. You could tell she had been chasing the color she naturally had. What I really love, and I mean not just “oh that’s nice” love, is this tone. It really imitates a lot of people’s natural hair that glows in the light. Even though it may look effortless, it actually takes a lot of technique. There’s a lot of toning that goes in to it, and the formulation is super important. But the payoff is worth it, being left with a color that’s just like you, only even better.

#1: Textured Waves with That Perfect In-Between Dimension
I really love this result so much that I want to text my coworkers a photo haha. The wave pattern does a lot of the work here because it lets that mushroom tone shift and catch the light in a way flat hair just won’t replicate. If your hair is finer like this, a volumizing spray/ texturizing spray will be your best friend for achieving that kind of body and volume without the crunch. I keep staring at the color depth where the cooler ash tones are layered over something warm underneath. From a distance it looks like one color but up close there’s a whole conversation.

#2: Beachy Mushroom Blonde with a Natural Root Melt
Here at the salon we love working with roots! That bit of a deeper base melts with the mushroom blonde and avoids it feeling flat or one-dimensional and honestly it’s also what’s going to save you money because you aren’t going to be racing back to the salon every four weeks. The layers are cut to move, not just sit there, and the beachy wave gives it that ‘I woke up near an ocean’ vibe even if you woke up near a highway. This works really well on medium to thick hair because there’s enough density to support the movement without the layers going stringy.

#3: A Lob That Actually Lives Up to the Hype
I may be a bit biased towards lobs, but they are one of the most universally flattering lengths, and this mushroom blonde example really drives that home. The shoulder skimming length hits that sweet spot where you can still pull it back, but it looks intentional if it’s down, too. What really stands out to me here is the way the colorist blended the warm and cool tones so that neither one is too much. If you have finer hair, a gloss treatment is a good idea every few weeks to keep this looking glassy instead of dull.

#4: Long and Flowing with That Effortless Color Blend
This hair is going to make coffee shop customers do double takes and feel awkward about it. The length is stunning, and the soft waves are just enough to let the color take center stage. The secret to making any color look natural is that the mushroom blonde works with her natural undertones, rather than against them. If you want to take this look even further, some balayage pieces through the mid-lengths would add movement without changing the overall vibe.

#5: Relaxed Elegance with Subtle Highlighted Pieces
I like how peaceful this style is. It stands out without being overly dramatic. The highlights look super natural and are placed within the perfect sections. Hair is straight with gentle waves to keep the length. It creates a lot of room for styling. Not much else needs to be changed here. This might be the best compliment I can give.

#6: Long Layers That Actually Have a Point
Although some layers may not be needed, these layers are doing their job well. Movement is created at the ends, and the soft wave makes the mushroom blonde color look almost liquid, and shifts as it moves. The style works well for a Tuesday morning meeting and a Saturday night dinner without having to restyle, which, if you’re anything like me, is the dream. This cut will give the most volume to thicker hair types.

#7: Soft and Airy with a Low-Key Polish
It’s hard to find fault in this hairstyle, and I think some of this is due to the color choice. When toned correctly, mushroom blonde reflects the light really well and gives the illusion of being very healthy and shiny. The barely there waves help keep it from being too flat, and the length feels long enough to be luxurious, without being heavy. If you want something to style without too much thought, this is a really good template.

#8: Medium Layers That Feel Light and Lived-In
At first, I almost missed the highlights on this mushroom blonde hair color, which is a highlight compliment. They brighten the hair color without announcing I just got highlights. That’s not something every colorist can do. The combination of soft layers and medium length hair is probably the most universally flattering. I’m not being dramatic. It works on so many people. The fine to medium hair density here gives a nice weightless feel.

#9: Textured Waves with Cool-Warm Balance
I love the vibe of this cut! The way the texture has been done looks intentional, and not over-done. It looks like someone put a couple of curls in, ran their fingers through it, and walked out the door. The balayage looks nice here, adding just enough tonal variation to create some interest, and without making the mushroom blonde look stripey or highlighted in that 2000’s way. I really appreciate that the colorist kept a depth at the roots, and how the lighter pieces ease in.

#10: A Bob That Gets the Mushroom Tone Exactly Right
Now letu2019s discuss this bob for a second. The length is fun, the movement is there and the color is that perfect mushroom blonde where you could honestly not tell if itu2019s naturally that cool or if someone super talented did it. That ambiguity is the goal. The medium density fills out the shape nicely so it doesnu2019t look thin or wispy at the ends, which is always my concern with bobs on finer hair. If you go this way, just keep in mind that lighter shades do tend to show regrowth a bit quicker, so plan your appointments accordingly.

#11: Lived-In Waves That Look Like They Styled Themselves
I think of this hair as someone who looks great in a t-shirt and jeans. Everything is understated, and the waves are built and relaxed. The mushroom blonde is also very nice as the tonal depth with the warms and cools are married perfectly. These are the results that get people asking, ‘did you do something different?’ but they can’t put their finger on what it is. The ash will be kept balanced with a toning shampoo every now and then, but this is as low effort as colored hair gets.

#12: Sleek Long Layers with Gentle Face-Framing Light
I was immediately drawn in by the sleekness of the style. It has a smoothness about it without being flat, and the layers are graduated enough to create movement as she turns. The face framing lighter pieces are well placed, brightening everything up without a contrast too harsh to the rest of the hair. For this one, I would recommend an anti-brass conditioner because the cool tones are doing a lot, and you want to preserve them.

#13: A Soft-Fringed Bob That Feels Fresh
I’ve been liking this bob cut with a fringe. It looks good because the fringe is blended with the whole haircut and looks like part of the bob and not some random style choice. The length is good, and with fine straight hair it gives a clean look with a sort of French girl vibe. It’s worth noting that a fringe will require maintenance, as it will need to be cut every 3 to 4 weeks. If you let it grow too long, it will sit against your eyelashes and you may find it really annoying.

#14 Cool-Toned Textured Bob with Real Movement
This cut stood out for many reasons aside from just the angle of the photo; it is original in concept and executed beautifully. The added texture gives plenty of volume and interest to the bob without looking messy or unkempt. I think the cool, ashy undertones of the mushroom blonde work really well with the short length and keep it modern. If you’re used to having longer hair, I know this feels like a big jump and it is, but it’s the kind of big jump that will leave you regretting not doing it years ago.

#15 Jaw-Length Bob with Soft Curls and Depth
This bob length is very flattering. Loose curls will open the shape more than a straight bob would at this length. The hair has good dimension with layers that don’t feel choppy, and the highlights are just enough to keep it from looking too mushroom blonde. The color and layering combination is amazing. This is an ideal ‘I want to change, but don’t want to panic’ haircut. It doesn’t look like too big of a change, but is different enough to feel good about your choice. If your hair doesn’t wave naturally, you will need lightweight curl cream to encourage the curls. The styling time is still really low, and you will love the overall look.

#16 Shoulder-Length Texture with a Shadow Root That Works
I love the shadow roots on this — they really help to add depth at the crown which helps the mushroom blonde look much more dimensional through the mid-lengths and ends. The texture is made to look effortless, although it always takes more effort than people think, and the shoulder length is that ideal spot where it moves freely without getting caught in everything. If you have finer hair like the model here, the texture really is your best friend in creating fullness, so don’t skip the styling here.

#17 Face-Framing Layers with a Warm, Bouncy Finish
The layers are very pretty. They draw focus to the face in a nice way, and the soft, bouncy curls finish off the look and invite the touch. The mushroom blonde is just a bit warmer than the rest, making it even more radiant. The cut and color balance nicely and neither one is trying to be the focal point.

#18 Long Textured Waves That Feel Easy and Polished
This style looks perfect for the days when you want to look good without trying too hard, which, let’s face it, is most days. The extra-long layers give movement without the ends looking too thin. The mushroom blonde is also toned just right to appear both natural and intentional. If your ends do tend to get dry, I recommend using a hydrating hair oil to keep the ends as glossy as the photo, especially in between washes.

#19 A Textured Lob with Natural Root Contrast
Natural roots and mushroom blonde are a great color combination. It adds dimension to the hair and takes away that grown out look. It’s a great trick to keep in mind for future color. The beachy waves on a long bob are a look I will always promote and for good reason. It works. With fine hair, this is especially true because the waves aren’t pulled as they are with longer and heavier hair.

#20 Half-Up Styling That Shows Off the Color Beautifully
One of the smartest ways to show off the dimension of the hair is to pull the mushroom blonde hair color half up because you can see the full tonal range from the color of the roots to the ends. The soft, smooth waves make the hair style romantic, and the half up style gives it just the right amount of structure so that it doesn’t look like you gave up halfway through doing your hair, which, let’s be honest, is a real concern with half up styles. It’s great for events when you want to look put together, but not like you tried too hard to look put together.

#21 Long Sleek Layers with a Quiet Shine
This hair shines! It’s so long and sleek with layers that maintain the smoothness of the style. This is mushroom blonde at its most polished. It is warm without the color being so warm that it is flat or pushes it into warm blonde territory. If this is the finish you’re looking for, a boar bristle round brush while blowdrying is going to give you the smooth, light-catching result.

#22 Soft-Layered Length with an Easy Root Transition
The darker roots and lighter mushroom blonde color blend well together. The color and the time in-between appointments look intentional, and the growout looks intentional. The soft layers frame the face and are not too defined, and the length overall gives an I take care of my hair, but I don’t obsess over it look, which I think a lot of people want even though they don’t say that when they sit in my chair.

#23 Wavy Layers That Catch Light in All the Right Places
As the hair flows, the waves give the perfect positioning to blend highlights to catch the light. This is one of the many things that showcases a great colorist. The natural texture and medium density offer just the right amount of body to the style so that not a huge amount of product is needed for a voluminous look, which is always a plus. The waves look and are loose and natural, similar to the waves you would get by a braid of damp hair sleep on, or from a large barrel curling iron and not too much fussing.

#24 A Clean Bob with Quiet Sophistication
I’ve got mad respect for this bob! It’s not being loud or trying to be edgy. Just a nice cut and a great color. The soft layers at the end stop it from looking blunt, and the ‘mushroom blonde’ has a lovely neutral quality to it. Depending on the light, it can look warm or cool, and that is beautiful! The face-framing layers are really flattering. There is just enough extra texture to keep it from looking basic, and to me, that strikes the perfect balance. All bobs should.

#25 Bouncy Curls in a Rich Mushroom Blonde
These curls are amazing! They have such nice bounce, staggered layering, and wondeful variety in the sizes and shapes of each individual curl. With how the mushroom blonde is balanced between light and dark colors, it also beautifully shifts as the curls spiral. The hairstyle is awesome for those with natural texture, and, medium to thick hair will get this volume with little effort. Humid weather can be even wilder, so carrying an anti-frizz serum can be worth it, but otherwise just let the curls do their thing!
