The thing with the mixie shag is that it solves a problem that a lot of people wouldn’t consider a problem. For middle-aged women, the struggle was to decide to either go super short and “age-appropriate” or keep their length, which definitely was not favorable. The mixie shag allows you to keep a longer length while still being fresh and modern. Years ago, I had a client who had been wearing the same layered bob for maybe a decade. Just like all those hours you’re going to have to spend getting your hair kept up, expect loads of commitment to salon brands like K18 and your newly formed best friend, Mr. Purple Shampoo. You are going to need to ensure that your extensions are not brassy right where your roots are. If all of this sounds exhausting, it’s probably not worth it.
#3 Chocolate Crop with Chestnut Dimension
I do feel eager for haircuts like this one because of how the technique used with color is being clever! The chestnut pieces woven through the chocolate base aren’t highlights in any traditional stripey sense, rather, they are just pockets of warmth that reflect light in different ways depending on the layers. This truly does make the whole look very expensive and rich in comparison to a single process. The crop length keeps everything feeling really sharp and intentional, and for oval and heart shaped faces, the way it opens around the temples can be super flattering!
#4 Silver Pixie with Quietly Asymmetric Layers
I suggest this type of haircut for people that want to look good and also want a haircut that only requires, five minutes max, of styling in the morning. I believe them, this haircut does the job. The subtle asymmetry is noticeable, and adds some spice to the classic short hair look. The natural gray looks beautiful!! This haircut is ideal if you don’t want to worry about looking messy when your hair starts growing back, since it will be in perfect harmony with your regrowth. It’s nice to not have a ticking time bomb between hair appointments. For hair around this length, shape is everything and I can see you wanting to come in for trims every four to six weeks.
#5 Copper Tousled Pixie with Built-In Warmth
I love the copper color of this one. It always makes the skin look warmer and gives a glow. With this color hair, I would suggest this type of layering for medium to thick hair. There is enough weight to create good shape, and the touseled texture keeps it from looking helmeted. I call it the “didn’t really do much, but looks great” cut (which is definitely a compliment!). Once you have some texturizing spray and scrunch it in when it’s damp, you are good to go.
#6 Salt-and-Pepper Textured Shag with Natural Dimension
It seems that a lot of my clients think salt-and-pepper hair is something to just manage. That’s not the case. This cut shows it off. The natural transitioning between gray to white creates depth that no color comes close to, and the textured layers really lean into it. Shag cuts compliment your hair’s natural wave, so that’s half the battle won. The lived-in feel comes from soft layers around the face, a rougher texture in the back and sides, and softer textures around the face. I always prefer something like this over anything too polished. If your hair has a natural movement, this will hardly take any work. Actual minimal work. Just wash your hair, scrunch some product in, and let it do its thing. You’re done. The silver is the cherry on top.
#9 Feathered Waves with Soft, Breezy Layers
What I like about this look is the way I can feel vintage influences in it. It has a modern take on a late seventies feathered cut and is soft and gentle. Though, it is not the most enjoyable, I do take time to talk about it. With the embraced silvers here, she isn’t fighting it or apologizing, and that color confidence is what truly makes it work. A lot of structure will come from quick regular trims.

This is also great with a variety of skin tones. I will say that this is not really a wash and go style and the tousled look is styled and not accidental. If you like the styled look then you will like this cut 5 minutes is not too long to spend at the mirror. This is a cut that looks different with ever style you give it.
#12 Salt-and-Pepper Textured Shag with Effortless Shape
I recommend this haircut to all my clients with heart-shaped faces because the layers falling around the cheekbones is the real gold for me, and almost feels like cheating. The length is in that ideal zone where it’s short enough to not weigh down fine hair, but long enough to have movement and personality. The salt and pepper color is doing its own thing here and in the best way possible, you get all this built in contrast without any color work. The effort to style this is nice and low, but you’ll need to keep up with shaping appointments because as the layers start growing out it loses that crisp, textured quality.
