30 Low-Maintenance Haircuts for Older Women

Let us be straightforward. I do not mean haircuts that “are easy” and come with round brushes and blow driers and 10 step styling routines. I mean REALLY low maintenance cuts. I have had clients come to me and ask for hair styles that they can wash, run their fingers through, and walk out the door looking styled. And frankly, that’s not asking too much! The trick is finding a style that works WITH the hair instead of battling it every morning.

Some years back, I had a client who blow dried her hair pin straight every day for twenty years. She considered her natural texture to be “messy”. I finally managed to persuade her to have her hair cut in a manner that went with the waves and when the hair was left to dry naturally, she was so surprised that she started crying. These are the types of styles I want to show others and this is the reason for them. The styles are for real life, real women with real lives that do NOT have 45 minutes to spend styling their hair every single day. Some of these styles are among my absolute favorites and I will tell you how I feel because that’s how we roll.

Chic Sapphire Pixie with Tapered Nape

#1: Deep Sapphire Pixie That’s Giving Me LIFE

Let’s appreciate this bold choice of deep sapphire color on the pixie. I suppose that deserves a slow clap. When the nape is tapered, it gives the look a very clean and modern silhouette. Finer hair benefits from the layered texture on top because it promotes volume. The blue-black color is the perfect level of edgy, without crossing the line into costume territory. Let’s get real though. That dark color is going to fade quickly and without a color depositing shampoo, it will wash out even quicker. As far as the cut goes, it’s going to a wash and go style every time as well!

Warm Chestnut Layers with Soft Fringe

#2 Warm Chestnut Layers That Basically Style Themselves

This is one of those cuts that I find myself recommending ALL the time because it just works on so many people. The soft fringe is doing something really beautiful here, it’s not heavy or blunt, it’s just there, swept across the forehead in a way that gives the whole face a softer look. And the layers sitting just past the shoulders give you that sweet spot where you can still throw it up in a clip if you want to or let it hang and look intentional either way. The warm chestnut tone is giving this gorgeous natural glow that I am very into. You are going to need to get those layers trimmed up every 6-8 weeks, otherwise they start blending into each other and you lose that whole shape, but day to day this is a “let it air dry and go” situation.

Chic Tousled Layered Cut with Natural Waves

#3 That Effortless Tousled Layer Situation With the Gray Blend

First, let me give you a pat on the back for describing this transition to gray so well. They have done soft blends of silver and gray, and brown and silver, and it seems like you won’t have to be in the salon every four weeks worrying about your roots. The lighter pieces create movement and give the illusion of more density, which is great if your hair is on the thinner side and tends to sit still. The length will sit above your shoulders, which is the ideal length to achieve that effortless vibe. This is going to be the cut for you if your hair is naturally straight and fine, as the layers will help create that texture.

Sleek Espresso Bob with Glossy Finish

#4 Glossy Espresso Bob That Looks Way More High-Maintenance Than It Is

I LOVE a gorgeous glossy bob, and this one is so impressive! The espresso color is so dimensional, it looks reflective. That perfect for straight to medium hair. The layers are subtle, and do not look choppy or overdone. They frame the face, giving a polished look. Can I also say; this color is great for covering greys? The richness absolutely swallows them. The cut itself takes five minutes to style, if you even do it. Just keep those ends trimmed, because a bob with scraggly ends is NOT the vibe.

Sleek Mid-Length Chestnut Waves with Lightweight Movement

#5 Chestnut Waves With That Perfect Lightweight Bounce

MY favorite part is that IT MOVES! You can actually see the hair SWINGING when she walks because of the subtle layers and her natural wave pattern. The mid-length is really versatile as well. Its short enough that she isn’t having to wrestle with it every single morning, but long enough to feel like she still has “hair”. With that rich chestnut color there is some serious dimension, which makes the texture really pop. I’d recommend a color enhancing conditioner to keep that depth and shine in between appointments because a color like that is really going to look its best. The face framing graduation is one of those small details that makes a REALLY big difference.

Graceful Grey Mid-Length Cut with Gentle Layers

#6 Going Silver and Looking GORGEOUS Doing It

I admire people who wholeheartedly accept their gray hair and get a cut that EMPOWERS their look. This photo is an example. The smooth layered mid-length cut works because it gives the silver hair enough space to highlight the different tones. The right cut can reveal numerous shades of gray and white that can be surprising. The soft face framing layers provide just enough to create the look without hiding behind the hair. I won’t lie, this length of hair is more effort than a pixie cut, but it definitely still falls into the “easy morning” category. The hair may require some purple shampoo to keep the silver bright and to prevent it from looking yellow.

Classic Brunette Short Layer with Natural Wave

#7 Brunette Layers With That Natural Wave Doing All the Work

This is one of those haircuts where your own texture becomes the style. Short layers create a beautiful wave pattern, and they add volume right where you need it, avoiding the dreaded triangle head situation. I love how manageable the length is. It’s short enough that you’re not going to be spending ages styling, but it’s also long enough to give you some movement. You’ll want a little curl defining cream to keep those waves from going rogue in the humidity (we’re talking a dime sized amount). Scrunch it in, and that’s your whole routine. I’d gladly do this haircut on anyone who said they want to spend three minutes or less on their hair, and still look put together.

Dynamic Copper Textured Pixie with Voluminous Top

#8 THIS Copper Pixie Though

I absolutely adore this! The warm copper color gives off so much glow that people will think you’ve just come back from an amazing vacation! If you have thinning hair, crown volume is vital, as those layered textures create more of an illusion than what is actually there. A vivid copper like this will demand strong upkeep, as you will have to return to the salon a lot to maintain that brightness. The cut is really low maintenance, so it depends on what you are willing to trade. The outcome is gorgeous!

Vibrant Chestnut Pixie with Contoured Layers

#9 Chestnut Pixie That Warms Up EVERYTHING

I keep coming back to this one because the contouring on the layering is super precise. It looks like whoever cut this really knew where to place the shorter pieces to draw the eye in all the right directions. The chestnut shade is warm without being brassy and it’s doing something really pretty against her eye color. If you have green eyes? Look because this is YOUR color. It’s a pixie so you already know the daily styling is minimal, maybe a little styling wax to piece out the top layers and that’s it. The color will need refreshing every few weeks to stay this vibrant, but the cut itself grows out really gracefully which is something I always think about when I’m recommending a pixie.

Silky Silver Layered Bob for Timeless Appeal

#10 Silver Layered Bob That Just Feels RIGHT

What makes jaw length silver bobs so great? Most people would assume you look classy on purpose, but that’s not the case. The layers here give a lot of fullness, and is not bulky. That is the ideal situation for medium density hair. The design of the layers falling around her face is perfection. None of those layers are thrown in there, they are extremely well placed and angled to make the jaw and cheekbones stand out, and very flattering. It is one of those hairstyles that is easily casual and formal. A round brush is not a requirement to keep that nice and smooth, and with just natural waves, it would look great air dried.

Subtle Chestnut Waves with Natural Highlights

#11 Chestnut Waves With Those Sneaky Sun-Kissed Streaks

I really appreciate how the lighter streaks are placed for subtle sun-kissed highlights. With the low-maintenance grow out color and high maintenance style, I think the streaks will be how your hair lightens in the sun, so when you grow them out, it won’t be obvious because they look grown out already. The soft waves will give your hair so much more body (probably) than it actually has. I love the subtle layers around the face because with them, she doesn’t have to touch it to keep the look full and nice. If they just sit there, you will probably need to use a wave spray to keep them defined. Most likely you wouldn’t have to touch it very much because it was made to just be left alone.

Silver Chic Textured Pixie With Natural Highlights

#12 Silver Textured Pixie That Embraces Every Single Gray

What I love about this hairstyle is how it shifts the mindset of ‘going gray’ into something more intentional. The layers create volume and fullness to otherwise thin hair; the added texture on top gives it a youthful look and a more relaxed feel to the overall style. This hairstyle is also a great compliment for round face shapes, as it draws attention to the eyes and cheeks rather than making the overall face appear wider. The gray tones give the hair a nice added dimension, making it look multi-toned rather than flat and one-dimensional. The only drawback I have for this hairstyle is that with shorter styles, they require more regular trims to maintain the sharp looks. But I mean, what’s the worst that can happen? You can just wake up and go, and it looks good in between trims!

Soft Brunette Layers with Wispy Bangs

#13 Wispy Bangs and Soft Layers, My Favorite Combo

I want to tell you a little secret wispy bangs are an option that not a lot of stylists seem to think of. They are light and not blunt and just softly graze the forehead and make it look like EVERYONE is having a fantastic hair day! And with these shoulder length layers? This is the kind of cut it stops people in the street and asks who does your hair. The subtle volume at the crown is really important here because it gives lift that counterbalances any thinning that occurs up there and does so in a really natural subtle way. But bangs are definitely a commitment and that is because you will have to get them trimmed every couple of weeks otherwise they will end up poking you in the eyeballs and that is not cute at all! The rest of the style does however requires very little maintenance.

Classic Brunette Wavy Lob with Soft Bangs

#14 Wavy Lob With Bangs That Hides ALL the Secrets

Let me tell you what I love about this hairstyle for people who have thinning hair right at the crown. The soft bangs and layered textures give a great illusion of hair fullness. And nobody, I mean NOBODY, has to know the truth. The waves look great and you even get the bonus of not having to use a curling iron every single morning. If you have even a little bit of natural wave, this becomes a super easy hairstyle because all you have to do is scrunch it! The length is also perfect because you can easily pull it back into a low pony, and it won’t drag anything down if it’s short enough to give some volume. Dyeing hair with a box dye is so easy because it is at the drugstore, but a rich brown like this needs to be done by a professional to get that depth and shine. Don’t come for me, but I stand by all of this.

Modern Textured Tousle for Mature Confidence

#15 Textured Tousle That’s Got PERSONALITY

I love the personality this haircut has, maybe I should name it! The effortless coolness is achieved with layered texture, and the style gives the impression of looking laid back and relaxed, even though you didn’t really- technically, wake up like this. The elevation at the crown does important work as it brings height and lift, which opens the whole face. This is the perfect hairstyle if you feel like you’ve lost the battle against gravity. For an event, you can style your hair like this and keep it polished and smooth; otherwise, with some texturizing paste you can make it more casual and finger tussle your hair. It does need regular shaping to keep that structure, especially when your hair is really fine or straight naturally, because without that shape, the hair could easily go limp. When the haircut is fresh, it looks absolutely amazing!

Effortless Light Blonde Shag for Mature Women

#16 Light Blonde Shag That’s Giving Vintage Cool

It has often been thought that shag cuts are targeted at younger people, but they are incredibly versatile and can compliment people of every age, young and old. This beautiful lady shows that perfectly. Thanks to the staggered layers in her cut, volume and movement have been added to her thin hair, and it won’t look heavy or weighed down. The light and airy shade of blonde also adds an ethereal touch to her look. The maintenance for this look is just as easy as the layers do all of the styling for you. As the layers can quickly lose their definition, you will need to schedule regular appointments to keep the shape. Frankly, I love this look, and I would give it to half of my clients if they would let me.

Effervescent Espresso Tousled Bob

#17 Tousled Espresso Bob With All That ATTITUDE

No, really, look at the little flicks at the ends! They add so much movement, life, and almost do the work for you (that is the goal). These warm, espresso tones are perfect for blending and working with the natural grey undertones instead of covering them up. The longer, choppier layers on top give you more options for volume, and the shorter layers at the nape keep everything modern and clean. This is a great choice for fine to medium density hair because the choppiness will create the illusion of more hair. You may need to tousle it with some product in the mornings, but it will take you about 60 seconds and shouldn’t take a whole production.

Charming Honeyed Chestnut Swirl

#18 Honeyed Chestnut That’s Effortlessly Put Together

While I can appreciate the small asymmetries you may have noticed in the cut, I find that they are a small detail that creates a big impact. It’s not overly dramatic, but asymmetry is just enough to add a modern touch. It works particularly well for balancing out rounder face shapes. I also love the chestnut color, and the highlights are so natural looking. They create a warm dimension without saying, “I just left the salon.” That’s the goal for most of my clients. They want to look good, but they don’t want to be obvious about the effort that went into it. And the cut delivers! The shape will do most of the work for you, and that cut promises a lot. You will be putting in the least amount of effort to achieve the look, which is another way of saying you can just run your hands through it and touch it up however you want, and it’s going to look great like that, any way.

Silver Elegance Swept-back Layered Cut

#19 Swept-Back Silver That Looks Like a Million Bucks

Her pushed back hair accentuates her facial features, something that a front falling style couldn’t do as effectively. I love the silver, and I actually think going lighter as you go gray decreases the maintenance compared to keeping a dark color, which I feel like no one mentions! The extra weight from the layers at the back helps with that annoying thinning, and a shorter back layer is ideal for keeping the hair off the neck in summer, which is a really practical consideration that not everyone thinks of. If your hair is straighter, you might need to use a round brush to get it into that shape during the blow dry, but people with wavy hair will have no problems with this.

Classic Chestnut Layered Bob with Bangs

#20 Chestnut Layered Bob With Bangs That WORK

I consider this a reliable classic, and by that, I do not mean boring. This style cut never lets you down, and the rich, chestnut color adds so much warmth and depth that it enhances every single layer. The face framing sweeping bangs do just the right amount of face framing without being overwhelming. I think this would work with so many different face shapes, and I honestly don’t say that very often because I tend to be quite specific about that. The layered texture and length give it body and structure, and together they create a silhouette that is polished enough to wear anywhere and nice enough to wear every single day. Both bangs and layers need shape, so do plan on regular appointments to keep them looking nice. Your morning routine will be that easy.

Vibrant Auburn Textured Top Cut

#21 Auburn Textured Top That Packs a PUNCH

The BOLD color is amazing! Radiant auburn is so lively and energetic, while bringing out the warmth in everyone’s skin tone. The top-textured layers create movement without the need to blow dry and style. That is what we love to see for low-maintenance! It’s cut in such a way that it is elongating to the face, which looks nice and is pretty flattering to round features. However, to be honest, a vivid auburn will need color touch ups a lot more frequently than a more natural color. It’s just the cons that come with these nice, bold, red and copper colors. Still, I think a trade-off like that is worth it, especially since the cut is probably the most low-maintenance style you’ll have!

Vibrant Espresso Tousled Pixie

#22 Espresso Tousled Pixie With ENERGY

I love how this style utilizes choppy layers to add volume to thinner hair. That’s the beauty of layered pixie cuts. This color looks so good with all the textures because the way the espresso brown reflects the light is stunning. It’s kinda flat and one-dimensional, and the length does all the talking. Your morning routine is basically just “existing,” and you look amazing. You wake up, run your fingers through it, and maybe you don’t even do that. It’s probably not true, but you could get away with it. The shorter back definitely needs regular shaping to look crispy and intentional, so maintain that salon relationship. This cut just lives and looks great doing it.

Soft Tousled Caramel Tussle for Mature Styles

#23 Caramel Tousle That’s Practically Foolproof

This look is very nice! The color caramel is really warm and flattering. The melted texture is cute and matches. This look has a lot of body. If your hair is fine or thin, a cut like this is ideal. I’ve seen the soft asymmetry around the face and it is cute and really brings out the cheekbones. This one is really simple to style, just a mousse and go! There is a lot of texture in this haircut which is great, it will probably be frizzy in humid weather which is a good thing! More frizz will look more tousled which is a win!

Refined Auburn Pixie with Textured Top

#24 Auburn Pixie With Feathery Layers I Can’t Stop Looking At

Those feathery layers on the pixie hairstyle look super soft and light! They really draw attention to the eyes and cheekbones, which is always the goal with short hairstyles. This is an excellent option for you if you have thinner hair, since the layering technique adds the appearance of thickness and fullness to the hair without the need for any heavy products or complex styles. The light auburn color really seems to give the skin a warm glow and brings a healthy and vibrant look to you, especially with light skin tones! For the defined feathers, light texture spray will work well, and you’ll need to keep up with trims every few weeks. Overall, you won’t need to spend a lot of time on this hairstyle!

Sunkissed Beige Wavy Bob for Effortless Charm

#25 Sunkissed Beige Bob With a Sneaky Little Detail

I have to point out the hidden undercut on this because it is such a clever detail and most people will probably not notice it from the street. The undercut removes bulk from the top layers so that the top layers fall nicely and it creates that effortless volume without it being heavy or poofy. The sunkissed beige color is soft and pretty and gives the whole look a chilled cali vibe which I love. The bob length is very adaptable to different face shapes which is a plus. One honest comment is a lighter color like this CAN go brassy if you’re not super on top of maintenance so have a good toning shampoo in your shower rotation. The cut is really easy to maintain.

Chic Platinum Pixie with Soft Texturing

#26 Platinum Pixie That’s Clean and CRISP

Platinum blonde hair paired with a pixie cut is an expensive and classy look, and this example showcases it perfectly. The color adds brightness to the face and offers a fresh look. The crown layers help with volume, and make it visually more appealing. The balance from all sides is pretty well done. If your hair is straight, this is the easiest hairstyle you’ll ever have, because it falls perfectly in place as if someone had styled it. The platinum shade will need regular touch-ups, since the roots will be very visible. Because of this, plan for color appointments. If you are willing to do this, upkeep for the cut is practically none.

Textured Feathered Pixie Cut for Graceful Aging

#27 Feathered Pixie That Looks Good on Literally Everyone

I know I probably shouldnt take it this far, but this cut is incredibly flattering. The feathered ends really soften the look as a lot of people worry about how pixies can look too harsh. Blending natural grays and blondes is gorgeous, and I appreciate the honesty and style of that pick. The texture on top creates movement and volume that works with straight, wavy, or anything in between hair. Daily styling is a breeze because all you need is something with light hold to create that messy look. You probably won’t be able to go too long without booking a trim to keep the cut pixie defined because it can look kinda funky really fast once it starts to grow out, but looking this good every day is worth the effort!

Dynamic Textured Pixie for Mature Skin

#28 Textured Pixie With Highlights That Brighten Everything Up

Light blonde highlights through the pixie cut are helping brighten the face while adding dimension to the cut. That can be tough to achieve with short hair as there is less area to work with, so to do it well is appreciated. Textured layers help create more volume on finer hair and give the hair more to work with even though the cut is quite short. With styling, in just a few minutes, you can apply a texturizing product to accentuate the layers and you’ll be all set. To retain that well defined shape, you will need regular trims as this style will definitely look fresh for a short period and will become less desired as it grows out.

Brunette Waves with Soft Highlights

#29 Brunette Waves With Caramel Highlights That Grow Out BEAUTIFULLY

completely and still look great.

Sleek Platinum Bob with Soft Texture

#30 Platinum Bob That Does ALL the Work For You

If maintaining a polished appearance is a priority for you, a platinum bob is a good option. It is very low maintenance, but makes it look like you have spent a ton of time on your style. The relaxed blunt ends are also nice, making the cut feel more chill. Length is just above the shoulders which is also pretty flattering. A nice long bob can frame your face nicely and not add a ton of volume. This cut is also going to work best on fine hair as it gives the most volume and movement without the weight of thicker hair. And, the good news is that it is a style that doesn’t require a ton of product. I do have to commend you for your commitment. Going to the salon often to keep your platinum hair freshly dyed is a big commitment. If that is something you are willing to do, then you will appreciate this cut because it requires little effort.
