As a stylist, I look at people in their fifties who come to me saying, “I want something easy,” and think, “What do you consider easy?” Easy is such a subjective concept. For example, many women think wash-and-go means showering, air-drying, and walking out. For others, they want to grab a round brush, so a blowout isn’t on the table, and they don’t want to spend 40 minutes. When it comes to hair, these distinctions are more helpful for me than any Pinterest board I’ve ever made for my clients.
I used to have a client, a professor, who came in every six weeks like clockwork near the end of the semester with pictures of celebrity bob haircuts. She disliked all of them, but it took her a dozen attempts to admit it. Ultimately, she did not want to do any blow-drying ever. She was so shocked after we gave her a short, textured cut that she could just run her hands through, and nobody had asked her what “easy” really meant before. This is what I mean when I say low-maintenance cuts; they only work when they actually fit your lifestyle, not the life you think you should be living.
With my clients, these are the styles and cuts I keep going back to when they want to look great, and I’ll be straight with you on which ones deserve the “easy” label and which ones may require a bit more from you than you think.

#1: Rounded Bob with Soft Interior Layers
I really like this style because the cut does most of the work! The hair is all cut to an average length, with the layers built into the cut. The style offers a rounded, full silhouette, so there won’t be a ton of layering visible on the outside. Fine to medium hair textures will make it look like there is more hair, which is always a nice bonus. The warm color is doing a lot for the overall polished look. If this style speaks to you, check if your color is doing a lot of work too. You’ll need trims every five to six weeks to keep the shape, but the styling is a breeze!

#2 Textured Bob with Soft Wispy Bangs
This style is ideal for someone who wants a touch of personality and charm in their haircut but doesn’t want to spend a lot of time styling it every day. The bangs are very wispy, and they will not give a boxed-in feeling like more solid, blunt bangs do. They grow out into the rest of the haircut, avoiding that awkward stage that people regret bangs for. The cut is a bit above the shoulders, and for finer hair like in this example, the texture holds some volume and keeps the hair from looking too flat. If you are starting to go gray and want to let it happen in a natural and gradual way, this hairstyle will allow the grays to integrate instead of just sitting there like a poof. The bangs are low maintenance, although you may need to do some finger combing to get them in place and a bit of texturizing spray in the morning, but that’s about it.

#3 Textured Lob Blending Natural Gray with Highlights
This is a great choice if you are starting to go gray and do not want to look unkempt. The length is a little more than chin length, which is a good compromise between having enough hair to feel like there is a good amount, and not having it be annoying. The highlights are done in such a way to blend in and look like they are growing out, as opposed to being dyed. The highlights are the most considered part of this hairstyle because the cut lacks any real skill. This cut will look really good when air dried, assuming the person has straight, medium density hair. To achieve a more lived-in look you will want to give it a little ruffle as it dries.

#4 Jaw-Length Bob with Warm Face-Framing Pieces
Many people can wear bobs that hit right at the jawline, and this example doesn’t complicate things. The face-framing layers are soft and blended without any choppiness or over-styling, and the warm brown highlights are just enough to add dimension so that it doesn’t read as a flat, one-block color. If you have fine hair, this kind of cut is forgiving because the jawline length creates the illusion of density, and you won’t sacrifice anything. The only thing I’d flag is that this length shows its shape quickly when it grows, so you’ll want to stay on top of your trims.

#5 Textured Pixie with Soft Movement
Be honest with yourself. Pixie cuts aren’t for everyone. It’s a lot more maintenance than most people think. Say goodbye to long salon visits but be prepared to go back to get it shaped up more often. That said, when a pixie cut works, it really works, and this one is no exception. The soft layered texture softens it all and prevents the cut from looking too severe. The grey color is more modern and purposeful and less like a color that just happened to you. In the end, the nice structure of the cut is what it’s all about. If you have fine hair and have been considering growing it out, this is a good example to keep in mind.

#6 Soft Waves with Feathered Face-Framing Bangs
I don’t say this often, but bangs really make this hairstyle. They’re soft enough to provide a gentle touch to the whole face and not weigh down on the forehead, and the wavy hair makes it look more natural. Round face? This is your style. It creates a nice vertical line down the center that is very slimming. You might have to put in some lightweight mousse to hold the waves, but honestly you could let it air-dry straight and it would look good. Overall, keep trimming the bangs every few weeks so that they don’t fall in your eyes.

#7 Textured Bob with Wispy Bangs and Soft Layers
This is a hairstyle that looks great in real life, and in photos which isn’t always the case. The face-framing layers are just enough to keep the cut from looking too blunt and heavy, while the wispy bangs finish the look. If you have fine hair, you’ll definitely want to use something like a volumizing powder at the roots or the crown will go flat by mid afternoon. It’s what my clients mean when they describe a hairstyle as low maintenance. It’s day to night ready without needing to be restyled.

#8 Layered Textured Bob with Dimensional Highlights
The different thing about this style from an average bob is where the highlights are placed. The purpose of the layers is to catch the light and create movement. They shouldn’t be stiff. This layered look will give you a lot of texture to work with if you have fine hair and don’t want to spend time with a curling iron every single day. The length will also be versatile enough that you can tuck it behind your ears without it being a hassle. To keep the layers from growing into each other, it will be enough to have a trim every six weeks.

#9 Cropped Pixie with Wispy Textured Layers
If you look this example up on Google, you’ll find it pretty easily. It will be more of a value style cut. You can wear it straight, but I’d suggest using a product. A matte paste works best for this sort of thing. It’ll take you less than five minutes to style. The first thing that will take the most time is actually applying the product. The texture will be amazing. The wispy layers keep it from looking close cropped and masculine, and brightens the face. It’s also a great cut for any oval face shape and heart shapes too, just be sure to leave a bit of length around the temples.

#10 Side-Swept Bob with Subtle Dimension
I like these kinds of haircuts because they solve a problem without having to point it out. The side sweep offers natural volume at the crown where a lot of women start to thin out, and the highlights blend to give depth without looking too done. The layering is kept back just enough to bring movement without the ends looking too thin, which is a fault I see too often. This kind of cut looks good when it’s pushed behind one ear with sunnies on the head, and sometimes, that’s all a hairstyle needs to be.

#11 Silver Textured Bob with Gentle Layering
Silver hair has a distinct texture, and this haircut enhances that texture. The waves and layers that frame the face are soft, and the length is easy to pin back, so you can add a clip if you want to do something with it. If you’re thinking of a bob, this is the perfect example if you have naturally silvery hair. It really shows off how beautifully the color and cut work together. The only maintenance I would recommend is using a little purple shampoo to keep the silver from yellowing.

#12 Short Textured Pixie in Natural Gray
The mix of gray and white looks great with the rest of the cut. It really creates the illusion of being deeper than it actually is. The cut being this length, gives the most volume right at the top of the head. The shape is really nice, and it also does not look too boxy. I will be honest, shorter pixie cuts like this do accentuate certain features, particularly around your jaw and neck, so it is very important to have a good talk with your stylist before going for it. But when it works for you, nothing else is so free.

#13 Textured Gray Bob with Soft Side-Swept Bangs
The bangs add to the effect of a fuller, more balanced face shape without making it look too heavy, or distracting from the overall look. The cut is hitting right at the jawline, which is a length I keep coming back to, because it’s so versatile and suits so many face shapes, plus it’s pretty low maintenance. The layering throughout gives it movement so it doesn’t look super stiff or helmet-y, which can be a risk with bobs that are cut too blunt. If your hair is fine to medium, this shape will be super easy to work with.

#14 A-Line Bob with Soft Layered Texture
The A-Line Bob is a true classic hairstyle. The longer pieces in the front are great at face framing, and the back is shorter, cleaner, and fresher. Gentle layers that create the A-Line Bob shape without creating a hard edge are softer and more flattering. This style grows out more compliantly than most layered cuts. The sides leave plenty of fullness and volume to the style. It is super easy to maintain up until the next appointment, but as a heads up, you will lose the A-frame shape around the 8-week mark.

#15 Curly Crop with Natural Bounce
If you have natural curls, you should definitely get to know this cut, as it is designed to let your curls do their thing. The length just above the jaw is the sweet spot for where curls will spring up and not be weighed down, and the overall shape will flatter oval and heart-shaped faces the most. I always tell my curly clients that a good cut will matter more than any of the products you will buy, and this is a good example of that. That said, a good curl cream will make the difference between clearly defined spirals and a frizz, especially when the humidity is high.

#16 Wispy Layered Cut Just Above the Shoulders
This is one of those cuts that might not look like much from a still image but in person it feels amazing due to how it moves. The layers are light and airy and cut to create movement without taking out bulk. With fine straight hair like this, layers give that effortlessly slightly undone look which is harder to achieve with thick hair. The length gives versatility without asking much from you in the mornings. If you want to add a bit of texture to the ends a quick scrunch with some sea salt spray while it’s damp will do the trick.

#17 Sleek Inverted Bob with Angle and Shine
Cutting inverted bobs is always a firm favourite, and this one is especially well done. The back is always my favourite angle as is makes a strong, clear line with a back to front graduation that is subtle enough to be modern, not old, and the sleek finish really does hair shine! For fine to medium hair, this type of polish requires a light serum, and as long as it has been smoothed through the mid-length and ends, then it is perfect! This cut is truly perfect for looking like you have put a lot of time and effort into it, when in fact you haven’t, which is the holy grail! The angled front pieces are great for creating a soft frame, and this look is particularly good on oval and heart-shaped faces.

#18 Cropped Pixie with Feathered Texture
You will definitely enjoy this haircut and the time you’ll spend in the salon will be worth it. It will be easy to style once you come in for upkeep every four weeks. A little hair product and some wispy layers will do the trick. And, just like that, you’ll have the volume and texture you need to keep the look from being flat! Unlike most pixie cuts, this one is unique because the soft layers won’t fall too stiff and you won’t have to worry about being done in no time. It will look good and intentional so you can let the trade-off do the talking. Overall, this hairstyle is a great way to really simplify your mornings!

#19 Layered Shoulder-Length Cut with Face-Framing Highlights
This haircut has some layered movement towards the end, giving the hair some length without allowing it to hang straight. This cut also draws attention to the face by creating an inward frame, which is very flattering. Due to medium to thick hair density, this cut can be most defined with the layers. The soft wave here is from a large barrel curling iron. For a more polished look, you can use a large barrel curling iron, or let your hair air-dry to achieve a straighter, more casual look.

#20 Short Feathered Pixie with Light Bangs
The bangs will soften the look and should grow out fairly well. I like bangs that will grow out well. The light blonde is pretty but if you aren’t naturally that color, it will require a lot of upkeep and regular appointments to maintain it. If you want something low maintenance, keep that in mind. The cut is really easy. It styles and dries quickly. Unlike other shorter cuts that fall apart in a few weeks, this one ages nicely between trims.

#21 Chin-Length Textured Bob with Silver Blending
If you look closely you can see small details that set this chin length bob apart from the others. The blend of silver and natural tones adds depth, making the hair look livelier and thicker than it really is. The length of the hair provides the perfect amount of balance between structure and movement for Fine to medium hair. Whether the cut is worn tucked behind the ear or down it will look great and will easily switch between the two styles with no extra styling needed.

#22 Soft Layered Mid-Length with Blended Highlights
This is the cut I explain the least because it is the most straightforward. It works for most clients, which is why the explanation goes the fastest. It has soft layers, the highlights are placed to add warmth and dimension without the drama, and the length is practical and not boring. You look polished with a round brush blow dry, but it will look good if you just air dry. The layers add volume without making the ends look see-through, which is a sign a cut is over-layered. A lot of cuts go wrong here, but you won’t be disappointed if your hair is fine.

#23 Softly Layered Gray Bob at Shoulder Length
If you’re trying to let your natural gray hair grow out and want a cut that shows that off, this is a great example. A shoulder cut has enough weight to let the hair fall nicely while the soft layers provide enough dimension to avoid the style looking flat. For fine hair that may fall flat at this length, a root volumizing spray is a must to keep it looking airy. The softer jaw layers really work to give a more visually appealing soft look. I wouldn’t call it a wild haircut and I say that in the best way possible. Some people want a haircut to look nice and be low maintenance and this style fits the bill perfectly.

#24 Pixie with Soft Lavender Tones
I like this standard pixie because the lavender highlights add a touch of color without being distracting. Also, the highlights look like cool-toned ones, so the color is great for more professional settings. The layered texture gives the pixie a lot of volume, and because of the short length, styling is pretty much required daily. However, any pastel tones on lighter colors will require some upkeep if you want it to look fresh. Be prepared for that, whether you choose to use a color depositing conditioner at home or go to the salon.

#25 Short Textured Crop with Subtle Dimension
This look is clearly modern and effortless. While there aren’t too many layers, the ones that are there are well-placed, offering structure just enough so that it doesn’t look too plain or uniform. The light grey color is fresh and modern. For the wearer, this style is also incredibly easy and will take them at most two minutes. The most time-consuming step will be using any styling product to define the look. This style still looks sharp and is also a good option for people with fine to medium hair. I don’t have much more to say about this one as it’s really pretty straightforward to the point, and does what it promises.

#26 Textured Crop with Tousled Volume
My favorite look is the untamed style. I like the way it looks like you just ran your fingers through your hair and kept going. Layers are great for adding height. Keeping it free and natural is important so it doesn’t get stuffed. If your hair is fine, you may want to use a small amount of product to hold on to that untamed look. Not too much, just a little. This is a great cut for people who have had their hair long for a long time and want to change it to shorter hair without going all the way to a pixie cut.

#27 Soft Pixie with Textured Crown and Tapered Sides
This pixie really captures the right balance of structure and softness throughout the crown. There’s enough texture to ensure the short hair doesn’t feel stiff. The tapered sides keep everything looking neat, and the whole silhouette frames the face just right. The gray looking healthy is actually a result of the hair’s condition. So, maintaining good hair really does come down to a good hydrating mask. If this length is what you are leaning toward, just remember that the cut will age quickly, so expect to visit the salon every 4-5 weeks to keep it looking intentional.
