I gave a shag for the first time to a woman in her seventies. She told me the last time she felt like herself in a haircut was over a decade ago. She had been getting the same boring bob every six weeks because someone told her that was what women her age were “supposed” to do. We took out weight. I added some movement around her face, and she laughed in the mirror. That reaction is the most honest and the best.
The rule for hair after 70 is there are none! The best haircuts that look great and are in style are not about looking younger or following a rulebook. The best haircuts find the version of the style that is you. The haircuts that work with your texture, your life, and the haircuts that don’t make you fight with it every morning. Some haircuts are wash-and-go simple and some do require a bit more to style. I organized this collection of haircuts because they are all incredible and they all have something worth noticing.

#1: Textured Bob with Soft Layers That Actually Move
This hairstyle really shows off the cut and layers. It is easy and simple to style and is around shoulder length. You don’t have to worry about moving it to the right place each day. What I like the most is the lift; a bob can cause thin hair to lay really flat, but this style looks like it has a lot of volume and breathing room. The color also has a nice subtle shift that livens the overall look. If your hair is long and plain, these layers can be an amazing change!

#2 Silver Curly Crop with Some Personality
A short curly crop on silver hair is the ultimate in effortless styles. The short layers on this cut enable the curls to fully expand, which is ideal. Hair like this is easy, just towel dry, scrunch a bit of curl cream in, and walk out the door. The cut looks done, as in, done on purpose, not just messy. There is a big difference, and this cut nails it.

#3 Chin-Length Silver Bob with Quiet Layers
This is a beautiful cut. The layers may seem subtle, but they do a lot to prevent the ends from looking heavy and blunt. They also soften the look around the jawline. This bob will look good sleek and styled or even on day two hair. I would grab this for clients who want something more polished, but don’t want to have to fuss about styling it every morning.

#4 Silver Pixie with Texture That Feels Effortless
Pixie cuts can go either way when it comes to fine hair, and fortunately, this one hits. The built-in texture of the cut allows for visual interest without any product. The silver color looks great and how it opens around the eyes and cheekbones is flattering, in that natural, effortless way. It may be a simple cut, but it doesn’t seem plain and that is harder to achieve than people think.

#5 Jaw-Length Silver Bob with a Natural Shine
Hair that glistens like silver? Awesome! The style itself shows off the shine o the hair best, and the shine combined with the jawline is beautiful. It cleanly frames the face and keeps length in the neck. With the back lengthened to avoid a stiff look, the layers are kept to a minimum. Very little needs to be said about this beautiful haircut.

#6 Short Layered Bob with Easy Volume
It sits slightly above the shoulders, giving you the short style ease while still leaving enough length for you to do some styling. The layers help create some movement, which fine hair really loves, and to be honest, it’s a really practical cut and sometimes that is all you want. Not every haircut needs to be a statement piece, sometimes it just needs to look good and stay out of your way.

#7 Below-the-Chin Bob with Gentle Waves
The wave in this cut is really working. While I styled the waves, I think they look gorgeous when settled like this as well. It creates a really breezy vibe which I love, which is so true for this shorter chin length. It is really forgiving and the silvery color is soft and pairs well with the movement. I will note that for finer hair, a bit of volumizing mousse at the roots is a great way to keep it looking full throughout the day without any change to the feel.

#8 Silver Bob with Face-Framing Layers That Earn Their Keep
It is clear that face-framing layers can be hit or miss. These layers hit the mark. They do a good job of softening the look around the temples and cheekbone area without creating a wispy thin look that bad face-framing layers can give. The medium length is easy to keep up with and the subtle wave adds just the right amount of volume. Overall a great haircut.

#9 Short Pixie with a Bit of Asymmetry
Pixie cuts with asymmetry are my favs! The asymmetry here adds a uniqueness that doesn’t look accidental. The way the texture is layered works great on finer hair because it creates the illusion of more volume with less product. This really is a wash and go cut, it’s about a five minute shape with your fingers in the morning and you’re done!

#10 Curly Bob with a Soft Bounce
Hair curls that fall slightly below the chin are a great option for framing the face. They remain controlled and keep their shape without being too heavy. The pattern of the curls offers the most volume, without any cutting trick to make it look that way. Because of this, it will look just the same on the second and third days. Straighteners have a tendency to hide natural waves and curls. If you have been straightening your hair a lot, then this may be a good consideration for you.

#11 Silver Pixie with Soft Angles
The angles on this pixie are certainly feminine and soft, but have enough structure to remain polished. This cut sits just above the ears, a length that looks polished without much effort. There is great lift at the top. This is one of those cuts that looks pretty much the same whether you’ve put in effort or not. That is the true mark of a great short haircut.

#12 Silver Curly Crop, Natural and Simple
This is about allowing your natural curls to exist at a length that can be easier to manage. The crop showcases the natural curl pattern beautifully without going against it and that silver shade is lovely! If you have natural curls and are tired of the maintenance that comes with long hair, this can feel very freeing. A light gel is probably all you would need for some curl definition.

#13 Silver Pixie with Edgy Layers
We love how you’ve embraced a more modern look. The layers on this particular cut give it energy, as they are a bit more refined and intentional than some of the previous examples. The silver is great for this as it enhances the reflection at each layer. This is a very confident cut, and I think it speaks more to the type of self-possession it demands than the cut itself.

#14 Silver Shag with Face-Framing That Actually Flatters
Shag hairstyles have become popular lately, especially with silver hair. Shorter layers bring volume to the top, while the longer layers around the front soften the look. This particular style looks good at being messy but organized at the same time. For a more lived-in look, I would recommend a texturizing spray to help separate the layers, but even without it the hair would still look nice.

#15 Short Silver Pixie with Airy Layers
The layers in this pixie give a light and breezy feel. The cut is close, but not too severe, and that is a balance that is very important in a pixie as you can tip too far either way quite easily. On fine to medium hair this would style itself, and that’s something I don’t say often. It’s a subtle cut, but it’s done so well and it would look great on so many different people.

#16 Textured Bob with Wispy Bangs
I love how wispy bangs on this type of bob change the entire vibe of the cut. Without the bangs, it’s just a jaw-length bob, which is nice, but a little boring. Bangs make the cut stand out a lot more in a positive way. The bangs in this hairstyle are soft enough that she won’t have to style them every day, and they won’t get heavy or greasy like thick bangs can. This style softens the forehead and makes the eyes pop a little which is a small detail, but it creates a noticeably different look.

#17 Grey Pixie with Lift and Texture
In this case, the classic pixie cut structure is appropriate because of the length and movement through the top and the overall balance of the cut. The more modern aspect comes from the shorter sides, while the texture on top keeps it lively. For maintenance, I would definetely recommend using a small amount of matte paste through the top to help define those textural pieces. That’s all you should need!

#18 Delicate Layered Pixie with Soft Texture
There is a lot to be said for the goodwill of this style. It offers a layered cut, and the soft, airy layers offer a natural, touseled look. The hair color is light and bounces the light in a way that has a lot of depth to it. Highlights and lowlights aren’t even necessary. This is a lovely cut and lovely is the right word to describe it.

#19 Short Pixie with a Hint of Balayage
The coloration is very subtle, but I can see it gives some nice dimension. A single tone on all the hair would not capture the depth, especially at this shorter length, where every little variation shows. The layers fall just at the cheekbone and the overall shape is soft and not at all heavy. This is the type of cut where shape and color work together really well.

#20 Short Textured Bob with Quiet Confidence
This bob is shorter and the soft layers create volume while avoiding a round or puffy look—which is a common problem for shorter bobs with fine hair. The tousled look gives a relaxed vibe while the light highlights keep it warm and add more dimension. It’s an ideal haircut for everyday wear and is the type you forget you’re wearing it because it suits you so well.

#21 Silver Pixie That Lets Your Natural Color Shine
What I appreciate about this style is the way it is designed to showcase the natural silver rather than fight against it. I love that there’s no color correction, no toning, just a cut that brings out all the beauty. The gentle layering creates just enough movement to make it interesting, and the length helps the silver appear intentional and modern rather than grown out. If you have been thinking about letting your color go natural, a cut like this will make the change feel like a new upgrade instead of a burden.

#22 Silver Bob with Gentle Waves and Easy Elegance
The light movement of the bob gives it a flexible look which is important for a jaw-length cut because it can look helmet-like without movement. The color and shine are stunning, and the bob shows a finished look without being too much. This is the type of cut I would recommend for anyone with some events coming up, but who also wants to look nice getting a coffee.

#23 Blunt Gray Bob with Just Enough Softness
A great blunt cut looks stunning on gray hair, and this example looks fantastic. The cut is very clean, and the edges are sharp, but the layers stop it from looking too severe. Some blunt bobs can get stuck in that look. The gray here is very soft and dove-like which works with her skin tone the way warm colors don’t. This is a simple cut, but it achieves great things.

#24 Silver Curly Bob with Relaxed Movement
Shoulder length curls are stunning. This style gives the curls an opportunity to have all the fun without any extra complications. Curls naturally frame the face, and at the right length, they can form beautifully without being too weighed down. For those with more prominent angular features on the face, a side part can soften the look, but lets be real, the curls are doing the flattering work. I would keep product to a minimum. Perhaps a leave-in conditioner to provide enough moisture and definition, but that is all. Let the style do the work.

#25 Layered Silver Waves with Effortless Texture
This style is incredibly simple to wear. With the added layers, fine hair won’t lie flat and waves create a loose, tousled shag look great both clean and dirty. The length is a perfect above or below the shoulder cut that allows you to do an easy updo. You can just pin it up and leave it not down and the think about it style will show through. It’s not the wildest cut in the collection, but it is one of the most functional which is saying something.
