A woman sat in my chair recently and told me her daughter said she was “too old” for long hair. I could feel my eye twitch. I’ve been hearing that [opinion] my entire career, and guess what? It’ll always be wrong. Why is it acceptable for people to give their unsolicited opinions about women’s hair once they hit a certain age? It’s ridiculous.
One of the best things I see behind my chair is that older women tend to have long hair that looks better than when they were younger. They’ve matured from following the latest trends and imitating hairstyles from magazines. Instead of wearing their hair to fit in, the women seem to know what suits them best. Although the aging process brings about textural and color changes, including silvers that can be striking and beautiful, many women seem to have the instinct to chop their long hair at some arbitrary length. I recall a 62-year-old client from a few years back. After decades of bobs, she grew her hair long for the first time and cried the first time it touched her shoulders. It was such a pleasure to see her overwhelming joy. So, cheers to all the long hair styles I especially love, on women who have earned every bit of their hair, and who have no plans to let it go.

#1: Long Silver Hair with Soft Layers
This lovely long silver hair has soft layers that frame the models face and features and even take away years! The silky feel and thick silky texture adds more versatility to any face shape. Using a round brush the tangles will be gone and the length will provide many options for updos and loose waves. This hair style showcases your natural beauty and is a welcome change for those who want to break free from long hair.

#2 Mahogany Waves That Do the Work for You
Mahogany-plum color is beautiful! No patchiness or banding is evident, which is typical for this length of hair, regardless of how long it is. The gentle waves that begin around the mid-length are certainly super sleek and really add a lot of movement at the ends. Her strong center part frames her face quite nicely and allows the hair to fall forward so that she has a face frame but doesn’t close off the entire look. I love the long hair look as it can be worn down or put up in a ponytail and for hair of this length, that is super important! The layers in the hair are so subtle it would be difficult to notice, but if there were no layers, the bottom would be blunt and super heavy, which would drag everything down and make the waves disappear.

#3 Polished Blonde Layers That Know Exactly What They’re Doing
I appreciate this image for many reasons. I appreciate how it shows us that longer hair on older women can be achieved without looking bohemian, or wild, or grey, or whatever other stigmas people attach to it. It’s possible to have longer hair on older women that is polished, and maintained, and salon-visited; hair that someone takes seriously. This mature woman’s hair is a warm blonde color, with soft, flattering highlights that brighten her face and are placed strategically to avoid washing her out. The highlights are layered to create a classic look with the bottom layer starting at her chin. The hair flows from full to sparse, is styled with volume and ends in soft curls suggesting that she has had a professional blow dry, which likely took 10-15 minutes with a large barrel brush to style it. The result is chic but not overdone. I have a long-time client in her early sixties who has this hairstyle and every time she sits in my chair she says the same thing: people keep asking her if she’s considering going short. She hasn’t. With that hair, why would she?

#4 Sun-Warmed Blonde with a Center Part That Works Overtime
Having a center part is a divisive opinion. It is understandable why people may have center parts styled in a way that may make their face appear too symmetrical or even make their face look longer. When it comes to the center part on her face, the center part creates a frame around the face and does not expose the forehead like a side part would. Her blonde hair is a nice warm buttery blonde that has been sun lightened naturally over the years of exposure instead of just a few hours in a salon chair. The slightly darker roots also help to ground the color. The soft ends of the waves and the mid length waves give the hair a nice sleek silhouette on top and then a more relaxed silhouette at the bottom. This is the color that women bring in pictures of and ask for “natural highlights”, but what they don’t know is that this color takes a lot of skill to do and can only be achieved after two appointments to really get the dimension in the hair. Women with this blonde hair naturally don’t realize how lucky they are.

#5 Chestnut Hair That Reaches Past What Anyone Expected
This hair extends past the shoulders with thick, healthy ends which demonstrates that she is doing well at taking care of her hair. It’s chestnut-brown with some light reflecting warm reddish tones. The side view shows how the hair falls in a straight sheet with no breakage or thinning. Over the years, I have observed that women who manage to grow their hair this long do not appear to use heat styling, wash their hair at most three times a week, and have a good hair oil that they apply religiously to the ends. This isn’t fancy advice, but the difference between waist length hair looking intentional vs neglected is consistency and small habits. The slight layering around her face is the only visible cut work, and it’s just enough so the front doesn’t look too much like a curtain.

#6 Sleek Dark Brunette with Nothing to Prove
At times, when I see hair, I am more inclined to think about what has actually been done to it. It was too perfectly straight, center parted, and brunette to the point that I feel boredom has become a personality trait for a decent amount of my clients. The color is rich, and as I tell my clients, that typically means she has a natural brunette base. Demi’s burn the color the hair; as opposed to flat and opaque box permanents, so I knew she was using those. The part is clean, and the rest are strong columns of hair that are healthy to the ends. The balance of the column is clean, and the way it holds is true to the line. I once told a client the toughest haircut to achieve is the one where you can’t see there are cuts, and I somehow feel this is the kind of thing that helps me feel more constructive.

#7 Auburn That Deepens Where It Matters
Auburn is a color category with lots of range. This particular color has a dark and cool leaning tone with just a hint of reddish brown. This shade might look warm and bright in the sun, but in low light it will look almost brunette. The ability to change color in different conditions is a great quality in a good auburn shade. Her hair is long and mostly one length, naturally parted, without a lot of visible layers. I think it is the type of hair that would look different in every photo setting and I think that is the beauty in it. There may be a slight wave or bend from the hair being tucked behind her shoulder, but it gives the ends some life that a perfectly straight look would not have. It’s not a complex style, and it doesn’t need to be, and that restraint is what makes it work.

#8 Strawberry Waves Caught in Golden Hour
Some people may not benefit from golden hour, but my hair definitely won’t benefit from the hour. My hair is a natural strawberry copper, which means it is more copper than red, and my waves are thick, not coarse, but thick enough to hold shape without being weighed down. It’s obvious that there is volume, and that there is volume at the root. It is noticeable regardless of how long it is, which means that she either has really thick hair, or there is very little product used that keeps everything from being deflated. The hair texture near the crown is smoother and wavier towards the ends, which is typical for long hair because the weight from the top pulls the waves down. She hasn’t gone too far in the ‘make the waves’ look thing, and that variability is a large part of what makes it appear so natural. The biggest problem with copper and strawberry tones is not fading, but the even more serious threat of brassiness. The colorist should explain the difference to you at EVERY appointment.

#9 Lived-In Ash Blonde with Volume That Comes from Nowhere
I see a lot of volume at the roots, I like to know if it’s from backcombing or real textured roots. The ash blonde, cool but not icy, is so flattering to women with a natural color that’s starting to shift. There are throughout but they’re messy in the best way. She looks like she ran her fingers through them once after they dried and walked out the door. The length is a good six inches past her shoulder, and the ends are naturally tapered from not blunt cutting her hair. This hair is special, and I wouldn’t touch it with a flat iron.

#10 Straight Dark Hair with a Side Part and No Apologies
I have a lot of customers, so when I see someone come in with hair like this and ask me what I would do differently, I have to stop and take a close look at them. Sometimes I actualy have to say that the answer is nothing at all and this is one of those situations. This customer has very long, very dark hair that is so straight and thick that it can hold all of the weight of the hair and not fall limp. The side part is done just so enough to create some volume on the fuller side of the part to keep things interesting. I think the hair color is close to her actual color which helps her not get the pressure of going lighter or adding dimension as you get older. I have always liked long straight hair on older women. The ends of her hair look like they have been cut blunt and even, which is very important on straight hair like this. You can see all the imperfections and even the lines, and whoever is maintaining this hair has been very precise with their work.

#11 Warm Blonde Layers That Live Between the Salon and Real Life
Many women want to achieve a style that’s done but also looks like it’s been lived in. This hairstyle hits the sweet spot. The warm blonde with darker pieces adds dimension rather than looking flat. The side-swept bangs break up this assymetric style so that while it adds some interest, it also means no extra maintenance. The soft bend around her face from the longer, blended layers, and rounded edges, is pretty. The style might look naturally done, but it may be better than freshly done hair. It can look lived-in, without looking freshly styled. The right dry texture spray works magic, and along with the hair’s natural texture, it might even look perfectly done. To extend that ‘lived-in’ look, the spray may even push the style through another day before it’s due for a wash. Practical advice like this applies to someone who lives in the real world, and this is the hair they would have.

#12 Hip-Length Straight Hair Worn Simply Because She Can
People tend to think that having waist-length hair means a person has been growing it out for years. The style looks simple enough, yet it makes for a classic look. Hair that is dark brown, straight, and tucked behind the ears looks polished, while layering and highlights add dimension to the overall hairstyle. I had an example in my interpersonal field, as one of my clients had hair that I considered functional to reach down to her waist, and she told me she had not cut it in six years. When I asked her why she said she had just forgotten. While she was joking, I think there is some truth to that. When someone stops fixating on their hairstyle, hair can really do some surprising things. Long hair that is lacking in volume at the ends can look very flat, and she avoids that by having clean roots that provide good natural lift.

#13 Long Wavy Brunette Hair in Its Most Unedited Form
I keep coming back to this example because there is something I try to get my clients to do, and most of them don’t, which is to just let the hair do what it is going to do. The wave pattern is apparently her natural texture, and it appears she hasn’t made any attempts to either tame or amplify it. She just washed it and let it dry and this is what she got. There is a wildness to the hair that I find beautiful precisely because it is not controlled, and the volume of the hair is very evenly distributed, which is what happens when you don’t section the hair and blow it out piece by piece. The color is a medium warm brown with a little bit of lighter pieces around the face which could be some very subtle highlights or just the way her hair reacts to light. The length is past her collarbone, possibly mid back, and I can see healthy ends which tells me she’s trimming regularly, even though she’s not fussing with the styling. That combination of care and carelessness is incredibly hard to teach someone.

#14 Long Auburn Layers with a Curtain Bang That Knows Its Place
I really like these bangs! They actually do what most curtain bangs don’t do, which is sit right on the cheekbone and have enough weight to sit still. Most curtain bangs on fine hair open up and show wayyy to much forehead, but these look full enough to hold the sweep all day. The auburn color is very pretty and looks freshly done! You can tell because the tone is consistent from root to tip, no fading, and no warmth shifts at the mid lengths. The layers are really nice, you can tell they are long and internal as it keeps the perimeter full and the insides to move. The result is hair that looks thick and healthy without being one note. She’s got a lot of volume through the crown area and I think that comes from the bangs. They look like they are blending backwards to create that lift which is one of the under appreciated benefits of a well cut bang.

#15 Brunette Layers That Move Like They’re in on the Secret
When women request that I put in more layers to their hairstyle, I interpret that to mean they want their hairstyle to have more interesting elements. This stylist clearly understands, as the layers that begin around the cheekbone area create a wonderful face-frame, accentuating the eyes, and transforming the overall shape to nice purposeful dimensions while remaining understated. With this sort of layering, you can tell the stylist has cut the hair dry. The progression from short to long is consistent with good flow as opposed to the choppy staircase wet-cut look that other stylists who rush their work give. The warm chocolate base colour is lovely, and the subtle mid-length contrasts look naturally sun-kissed and not overly highlighted. This colour is only going to improve with age. I used to have a client with almost the same hair structure, and every eight weeks she’d come begging for more layers. I would remove a quartz piece from the weight and she’d leave as if I had performed a metamorphosis. You could tell she loved her hair. Sometimes a hairstyle that requires little maintenance is ideal.

#16 Natural Red That’s Lived a Full Life
Finding a genuine natural redhead is unusual, and even more unusual is finding one that has kept their natural hair color as they age. As for redheads that I do know, they seem to do everything possible to maintain their hair color, which is understandable. She has such a unique copper-ginger tone, and her highlights could be the beginnings of a gray transition or simply a natural color shift. The roots are a bit puffy at the top for some nice volume, and the length is all one length to just above her shoulders which is perfect because the color speaks for itself. This will most likely sound bad, but I actually think that as natural red hair grows older and the color fades less vibrant, I think it looks better overall because the developed muted tones are so much more interesting to look at. The only things I would watch for is hydration as redheads typically have a finer hair texture that can dry out quite easily and at this length, that may result in the ends looking a bit thin.

#17 Sun-Lightened Waves with Mediterranean Energy
This hair color occurs when a natural brunette has spent years in the sunshine and her hair gets self-highlights (no colorist required). There is a warm golden highlight, that is mixed in with a darker base, and this look is more natural than any balayage trend because it is an organic color, and the contrast with the brunette base is perfect. The waves look like the hair has just been washed and maybe scrunched and left alone. The hair goes all the way past her shoulders and the weight pulls the wave out just enough to keep it from looking too even. I once had a client who wanted to show me a picture of hair like this, and she kept asking for the technique, and I told her that the technique was just living by the ocean for thirty years. You can get sort of the same result with sea salt spray, but in reality, this look is much softer than any product.

#18 Dark Naturally Textured Hair Worn Long and Unapologetic
I focused on this one for a while because the actual form was especially interesting. The hair is neither straight, nor wavy, but sort of crinkly and crimped. The sort of texture that some women spend their whole lives trying to get rid of. Worn long like this, it gives a volume and body that women with finer hair would trade their first born for. The colour is her natural dark brown, possibly with a very slight warm shift from sun exposure, and it suits her beautifully. The hair has to have that relaxed, almost messy, look that says I know my hair is gorgeous and I don’t care if you appreciate it. There are no traditional layers but I know the texture is natural. This is hair that would look amazing pulled together in a low loose bun on the days she doesn’t want to think about it, which is exactly the sort of versatility long hair gives you.

#19 Strawberry Blonde Layers with Curtain Bangs That Open the Face
Curtain bangs are popular, but people over fifty can’t pull them off. The bangs are too short, too blunt, and sit on your forehead like a shelf. A better alternative could be longer bangs that can be swept to the side and blended into some face-framing layers. It gives the illusion of evenness at the bottom of the bangs and the ends of the layers feels ambiguous. Her skin tone is very flattering and this warmer strawberry blonde shade is too. The longer layers also help to maintain youthful movement without going overboard, especially with this polished blowout. You can tell the ends have been curled under with a round brush, but the added volume at the roots in the crown suggests that a round brush was also used to blow out the crown. If you don’t want to tussle with a blow dryer, this look can also be achieved with a few velcro rollers and some patience to help the blowout be as high as the crown.

#20 Warm Brunette That Hasn’t Seen a Blowout and Doesn’t Need One
Long hair that someone has had for decades and understands how it behaves looks like this. It’s warm chestnut in color but it’s graying, and it’s consistent in color from root to end. It’s more difficult to maintain this length than it seems when it comes to doing color touch ups. I appreciate how she has put in little to no effort for a styled look. The hair is air dried and the ends are slightly bent. The shape is healthy hair that is falling in a natural way due to gravity. I don’t need to analyze the technical merit and I can simply tell you this woman has clearly had consistency and trust the system. That is the true secret behind healthy hair at this length.

#21 The Kind of Blonde That Barely Tries and Wins Anyway
This look is relaxing and stunning! The color looks intentional, the roots are grown out beautifully, and the soft waves are a rare find in most hair types. You will be giving off the impression that you put time and effort into styling your hair, when in fact, it’s all done naturally. Most women are expected to have hair like this, and it is nice to see hair that isn’t over styled. This is the hair I envision on most clients, and I like to tell them my job is to do as little as possible, and the more confident clientele agree.

#22 Silver-Black Curls Pulled Gently to One Side
Her hair is multi-dimensional with deeper shades underneath and metallic strands rushing in from the temples and throughout, creating a depth that single-process color will never achieve. She wears it st of center which is one of those subtle differences that completely alters the the vibe of long curly hair from i didn’t do anything with it to i aboslutely did this on purpose. The spiral is delightful and quite diverse; some sections are more tightly coiled while others are more loosely crimped and it all adds a nice organicness to the whole. I would guess she is growing out color rather than covering gris, and she is at a stafe where the blend has become the look itself. Most women find that phase of growing color out to be particularly brutal, but those who endure it are rewarded with goals like this. A mature hair curl cream will define the pattern while adding the moister that fraying curls need.

#23 Long Curly Red Hair That Belongs Near the Ocean
Some hair looks like it should have salt air in it. That’s what this hair looks like for me. The way the curls are done, it looks like no product is needed to keep the curls in their form; the natural frizz halo at the crown of the head that comes when curly hair meets humidity is there, and instead of looking messy, it looks alive. I hope this girl never changes this hairstyle because of the length and color of the hair, she won’t be able to find curly hair like that. The hair looks mostly natural and still very vibrant. I want to focus on the volume distribution, it’s even from root to end instead of just at the bottom, which means the layers are perfectly placed and the volume is well distributed from the roots to the ends. If you have curls like these, never let anyone thin them out with thinning shears because it creates frizz that takes years to grow out. I have watched it happen too many times to mention.

#24 Copper That Warms Everything It Touches
It is copper, and the choice was good, and the warmth of the tone against her skin is the kind of match that makes you appreciate color theory, and when it is done right, it changes how a person looks in a way that is not about the cut. The waves are relaxed and unfussed, which is how long copper hair should be worn, because the color itself is doing plenty. This is not an extreme change which would be against the suggestion of ends trimmed a bit more than she might want to hear, because copper tones tend to look their worst on dry, split ends, which is where the color oxidizes differently. The length is substantial without being heavy, and whatever minimal layering is in there is keeping the shape from going triangular, which is the real enemy of long hair on anyone at any age.

#25 Gray Waves with Texture That Tells a Story
The hair’s texture is the most important characteristic. It is wiry and rough in a way that many women will fight against, but she has chosen to embrace her hair’s grays. The natural volume at her roots is amazing, and as the hair goes down the waves become softer and more gentle. The look is breathtaking and heat styling will never achieve it. I’ve spent an hour trying to achieve this exact look with a younger client who had straight hair, but we both knew it was going to be different because that kind of movement is something that has to be earned. There is really no way to recreate this with styling products and tools. Once your hair turns wiry with grays, the worst thing you can do is over condition your hair. What’s most important is to apply a light leave in conditioner to damp hair and then scrunch it. It’s important that the conditioner is lightweight so that it doesn’t weigh down your hair too much. This will help to show the natural texture in your hair without being too heavy.

#26 Salt and Silver Worn All the Way Down
Letting hair grow to a longer length especially when it is silver can be difficult for people to understand. Family, friends, or co-workers might suggest trimming it at some point during the journey. The natural color variation of silver, pewter, and darker strands creates a depth and dimension that a colorist cannot replicate. Gray hair is the only hair that has a built in depth and dimension. The waves from mid shaft down give the appearance of natural texture, or like she braided her hair. This is an excellent overnight trick for hair like this. Once you get past the natural waves, it is the hair texture and volume that creates the illusion of it being braided. Of all the things that stand out, healthy and taken care of ends suggests that this is a more conscious decision. It shows that the owner has taken the time to care for it, meaning to trim their hair. It is the regular trims, even just a half inch every few months that creates this look.

#27 Deep Plum Length That Refuses to Play It Safe
People at the consultation might be nervous with this choice, but it’ll be worth it once they see it in the mirror. For lengths this big, deep burgundy-plum comes with class and costs, as well as commitment for upkeep. But the confidence of the wearer says a lot about it. She’s also blessed with a nice length. Waist length with subtle waves in the bottom half add some weight to it, but not so much that it feels too heavy. Most people shy away from it, but I’d like to draw attention to it. Keeping a fashion shade like this on mature hair is a thing people try to avoid as it grabs pigments unevenly and erratically. There are ways to keep this from happening, but they are not applied too generously. It may seem crazy to keep a balanced look on mature strands, but that is the reality when working with them, especially when the strands are on the coarser and drier side. Between salon visits, a color-depositing conditioner will keep this from fading into that muddy region that snaps people out of their dark hair ventures.

#28 Long Layers with a Soft Bang That Actually Behaves
All the elements came together for this cut, and that’s rare. Long enough layers were cut to provide some movement without the straggly effect that occurs when too much razor work is done. It has good layering as her hair is finer and the layers provide some volume rather than having it lie flat like it has given up. The highlights also add some subtle dimension plus create movement by capturing the light. The bangs, I have to say, soft bangs like this are a bit more work just because they can dry funny if they aren’t styled but if you spend 30 seconds round brushing them up in the morning, they are very nice to have.

#29 Silver Waves You Don’t Fight, You Just Let Happen
It’s nice to see the full commitment to the style, and the waves look nice and classy, and are effortless, not overly done to the point where it flies off with a curling iron. Silver hair can look dry and dull. She takes care of her hair, and it shows! The shine of her hair shows the love and care that she has put into it. Length that hits mid back is a bold choice, and I love it! I looks so good! WIth finer hair, some soft internal layers would give the same movement without losing length. The only real upkeep is a good purple shampoo, which is great with keeping it from going brassy or yellow.

#30 Warm Layers and Bangs That Make You Look Like You Just Came Back from Somewhere Nice
Thanks to the stylist for making this look so warm and inviting! The combination of colors and cuts is outstanding and the styling really makes her glow. If you’re looking for bangs that will be kind to day-two hair, then you’ll want them soft and piecey like this. She has just the right amount of layering to create the illusion of volume, and the warm brown color with highlights has amazing depth without being too much. I would do this type of haircut for someone who says, “I want to look like myself, just better,” and that is one of the best briefs I could want. The bangs will need a trim every few weeks, but that’s literally like a five-minute appointment.

#31 Long Silver Waves That Belong in a European Film
I may be biased towards these silver waves, but seriously look at these waves, they fall so effortlessly and with a romantic look, and she has fine hair which makes the waves look light and not heavy. The layering is very subtle and almost unnoticeable, but it really does help to keep the ends from looking blunt and weighed down. This is low-fuss hair. Once you have the cut down, you could air dry it, and it would still look stunning. You do flag lighter hair, like this, it gets a lot of benefits from color-safe conditioner to keep it from drying out. Other than that, let it do what it wants.

#32 Face-Framing Silver Layers That Soften Everything Perfectly
The design of this cut’s front layer is quite purposeful. It draws more attention to her face than the rest of her body. The design of the cut gives the illusion of more length to the hair than what actually exists. The natural softness of the hair is a compliment to the silver color. From all angles, this cut will look good anywhere. It suits anyone with medium to fine hair. You will need to visit the salon for trims to the front layers that will be required to be done in the past 2 months. It is defrintely low maintenance.

#33 Soft Waves with Highlights That Blend Into Gray Like They Were Always There
The highlights in the hairstyle work particularly well because, rather than fighting against the grey, they choose to blend with the grey for a seamless transition from the colorist’s work to the grey hair. That takes a lot of confidence and few people would be able to pull it off this well as the stylist did. This kind of soft, undone texture looks as though she had her hair twisted into a bun when it was still damp and then let it down. That’s actually one of the best techniques for achieving heatless waves. In this sense, volume is ideal when it matches the density of the hair, and here it’s definitely living its best life. If you are someone whose hair tends to lose wave definition by noon, a light texturizing spray at the roots will extend that.

#34 Romantic Wavy Layers with a Fringe That Frames Without Hiding
Everything about this piece flows beautifully, and I especially love the gentle touch to the styling. Front bangs that are open are great as they reveal features instead of shuttering the face, and that’s how bangs should be styled. Hair past the shoulder, looking effortless as it waves saying she has not put in work to achieve this style, but we all know the cut is thoughtful and stylistically put together. If you have straight hair and you have been staring at this style thinking it will never happen to you then you should get in line for your large-barrel curling iron, because with just 10 minutes to spare your hair could look like this. The right layers underneath also means that even fine hair will achieve the desired volume and shape.

#35 Silky Long Layers with Highlights Placed Exactly Where They Should Be
I Really love the placement of the highlights. They are evenly located around her face and spaced through the mid-lengths so that they create a softer face framing around her face and add some degree of dimension to the look without the chunky highlights that we all hated from 2004. The long internal layers also ensure there won’t be any obvious steps showing, but she does get some great swing to her hair when she moves, which is nice. The texture of the hair is smooth and silky, and I really like to see that on fine to medium hair because it tells me that the client has a good regimen in place. An enriched serum really does wonders when it comes to the blow dry being straight and when it is applied to the hair while being damp, it will also dry straight. I could genuinely gaze at this for hours, the way it reflects all the different levels of light is stunning.

#36 Sleek and Polished with Just Enough Layering to Keep It Interesting
A long-haired version of that looks great with a black blazer, especially with some nice tailoring. It’s a timeless, adaptable item, and what you pair with it doesn’t really matter. The subtle, face-framing layers show how good this style is; they help keep some of the weight of the hair from pulling her features down while softening the look.nnThe shine on her hair is captivating and straight hair is just known to look highly hydrated and maintained. This polished look takes some work and will require a fair bit of upkeep for the routine. That said, if you are the sort of person that likes to style their hair in the mornings, the effort that is required is rewarding.

#37 Natural Blonde Waves That Look Like They Grew That Way
There are looks that feel genuine. This is definitely one of them! The waves look effortless. She has almost a mermaid style hair. The blonde looks soft and natural on her skin. This hair also looks great in a low pony. People don’t style their hair every day and it’s important for a cut to look good on the off days. The tips are going to need a little more love with this length, but every long hairstyle needs to be tended to at the ends.

#38 Silvery Layers with Root Volume That Doesn’t Quit
I have to give props to the volume at her roots for doing all the work for this look. Seriously getting lift at the crown on finer hair without it looking teased or crunchy is a feat. This volume could be the result of some great technique or products, but I like to think it is from blessins or some great root lifting spray and round brush technique. The silver has a wonderfully cool toned shade, but be careful to not let it drift to the yellow side with some toning. Layers that smooth out toward the ends give it a polished look and the shape is nice enough to not be too fussy. This is the style that will have other women stopping you in the grocery store to ask “who does your hair?”. That is truly the highest civilization compliment.

#39 Bouncy Layered Curls with Dimension for Days
Now we’re talking about a cut that has personality! These curls look so bouncy and so lived in, and it seems like every single layered curl has their own goal, all blending together like a cast in a well made ensemble movie. The highlights look like they were meticulously painted in to give the curls both a layered and almost 3D look, and the shorter face framing pieces are the perfect length to draw the eyes where they need to go. Now, I’d be lying if I said this was a wash and go kind of deal; you are going to need a really good curl-defining cream, and either a diffuser or a decent amount of patience. The end result looks youthful and is so full of movement, and really that’s all any of us want from our hair!

#40 Feathered Bangs and Long Layers That Feel Effortlessly Put Together
I always come back to feathered bangs, and here’s why. They are so light that they won’t weigh her down on her face, and they don’t create an awkward grown-out stage because they integrate perfectly with her layered cut. I think about this a lot when I get bangs. People never consider the exit strategy out of bangs and then they look miserable for four months, but with this style they won’t be stuck growing them out because there’s no starkly cut bangs in the front. The long layers look so nice and fluid. Feathered bangs give her fine hair so much added volume. The whole look is fresh and modern. It’s not easy to strike that balance of looking effortless and not trying to be trendy.

#41 Silver Lengths with Layers That Give You Room to Breathe
I appreciate that growing out silver hair is almost defiant, and I think that is a compliment. The face-framing layers are soft and unoffensive, nothing too excessive. A bit of volume at the roots makes it look light which is nice. Hair of this length could easily be dragged down by the lack of weight, but good layering solves that. A lightweight styling mousse at the roots and damp hair is what I’d guess keeps it bouncy and voluminous so the look can be maintained between washes. I understand the longs ends require regular maintenance and I’m sure she understands that as well.

#42 Rich Brunette Layers with That Quiet Crown Volume
Seeing a cut that performs the fundamentals flawlessly isn’t rare, and a good example is this one. The crown volume is reasonable, and the layers are classic. A few highlights on this rich brunette color gives an expensive but not over the top look. The layers in her thicker hair have weight and swing that settle back into place in a satisfying way. For someone with naturally straight and thicker hair, this is a great wash-and-go option as she will look polished and put together with no muss and minimal fuss. Really the only note is regular trims to keep it clean.

#43 Silver Layers with Side-Swept Bangs That Know What They’re Doing
These side-swept bangs look nice considering I’ve had a tough time with bangs in the past. While bangs can get too far to the side, these sweep across the forehead and draw attention to the eyes, which is exactly what they should do. The haircut features graduated layering that starts around the chin and adds to the back which creates that lifted and bouncy look to the hair. The silver is very well-maintained, with very little patchiness, and no yellowing, it’s clean and bright. This type of haircut looks effortless, but it has to be the right cut. It really doesn’t take a lot with a basic blow-dry.

#44 Flowing Layers with a Soft Wave That Does the Styling For You
I can see the natural texture, which is why I like it. The cut was created with her hair in mind instead of going against it. The soft waves cause movement in the layers created. The medium density keeps everything looking full but not too heavy. This type of cut is perfect for people who want an effortless hairstyle in the morning. There are actually a lot of people that come to my chair who want this. If your hair has a natural bend, then definitely ask your stylist to work with it because the results are incredible.

#45 Long Face-Framing Layers with Highlights That Age Beautifully
These highlights are going to grow out beautifully. They are spaced meaning they will not look grown out at all. They are designed to frame her face and as her roots grow in, the highlights will look intentional. Her layers are so beautiful. They create enough shape without being too choppy, and the movement is overall very nice. With fine to medium hair, I believe it requires more than just a little movement. Light mousse with some scrunching is all it needs while still damp, and you’re good to go. If you want to avoid frequent salon trips, this is a great low-maintenance color and cut combo.

#46 Silver Waves with Highlights That Add Light Without Changing Who You Are
What an awesome way to blend the natural silver without completely altering the color! Her highlights look great and offer some nice brightness to her whole face. Were she in a magazine you just might squint! Now she has the most gorgeous, lived-in real looking natural grey. The waves look nice and not like some perfect curled with an iron look. When it comes to hair density, it definitely makes it a bit trickier for longer styles, but the awesome long layered look she has gives so much great volume. The cut looks so good either way, styled or not, and that speaks to a level of cut that very few achieve.

#47 Long Soft Waves with Bangs You’ll Actually Want to Maintain
As I continue repeating myself about the different styles, I must say the bangs are stunning. They are bold enough to be a statement, but soft enough so that you won’t feel like you made a decision that you will regret in three weeks. The waves in the ends of the hair are very generous and have a lot of volume. The thicker the hair, the more volume in the waves and the better they hold their shape without collapsing mid day, which is hair goals. That shine is the fsh that definitely hydrated, healthy shine that proves she is using heated styling products but not too often and she’s not over washing. I won’t get into that… Regardless, it is a great option for those with enough density to support both the length and the bangs without being fitted.

#48 Silver Waves and Wispy Bangs, the Combination I Never Get Tired Of
You’d think I’d get used to silver waves by now, but I feel a rush of excitement every time I see a new one. These soft, wispy bangs are just the right amount to soften her hairline and give it more interest. The relax flowing waves fall past the shoulders in a way that gives the impression she just ran her fingers through it and left. The layered cut adds dimension to her fine hair that a one-length style just wouldn’t achieve, and it’s honestly why I almost always recommend layers on finer textures, regardless of age. It’s obvious the waves are styled, but even if she air dried it, it would look pristine.

#49 Long Flowing Layers with That Perfect Amount of Bounce
This cut shows that the skill of the stylist and the calibration of the layers has been done properly because there is volume without looking puffy or overdone. It’s just great hair; that’s so important with fine to medium hair density. With layers done poorly, it can cause hair to look flat and with layers too placed, it can look like you’re wearing a triangle on your head, all of which we are trying to avoid. The highlights look natural since they are deliberately placed, and add dimension making the layers look even more defined when the light hits. I’ll be honest, this style does require a bit more time to blowout but if that bouncy polished look is your thing, then the time is justified.

#50 Vibrant Warm Layers That Bring the Energy
I like this color and it looks like fun! That warm reddish tone is giving her skin a beautiful glow! I also feel that as more women warm up to age, the right warm color can make you look more alive than any neutral. Maybe a controversial opinion, but I have seen it too many times to back down. I appreciate the layers, they have good movement! And the general shape is full and healthy looking, which with medium to thick hair is more about getting the right amount of weight removed without going too far and losing the body . This color is going to need more regular visits, because warm tones fade faster than cool, that’s just chemistry, but the vibrancy when fresh is absolutely worth it.

#51 Silvery Layers with That Soft, Lived-In Romance
Your outfit looks super soft. We are definitely headed to an ultra dreamy garden to take some photos. The way your hair is styled is awesome. The way the layers fall is absolutely beautiful and the thin to medium density creates a softness that is very airy and pretty. People with fine hair often hear that they can’t pull off long hair, but with hair like yours it proves those people wrong. The silver is beautiful! I do find that long silver hair can get a bit drier, so a good deep conditioning mask once a week will keep it looking as good as it feels. I love this so much. This is so low maintenance and high reward and it just works so well for your hair type.

#52 Silver Layers with Natural Movement That Just Works
An excellent note that succinctly captures the essence of the entire list. After all, it is about finding the right cut that works with the hair and getting out of the way. The way the silver shines and is well taken care of, the layers add movement and the face framing pieces soften the look of the hair without it being too obvious. It is the type of hair that looks like it has been done without too much effort, which is the goal, whether you’re 25 or 75. Layered cuts typically look their best in the first couple of weeks after their cut and the goal is to get them reshaped every 8-10 weeks. But that is a small price to pay for great hair, and how amazing she looks. You can always tell.
