Choosing the best hairstyle for your face shape can help to boost your confidence and improve your overall look. The right haircut is capable of creating a more harmonious balance to your face and highlighting your most beautiful features. In this article, we will review 15 great hairstyles for long face shapes. Each of these incorporates different styling techniques to help add balance to your face.
Not too long ago I had the pleasure of working with a beautiful woman. She came in and stated “Nothing works for me. Everything just makes my face look longer.” I remember this because I hear that all the time. With longer face shapes, a lot of the advice is way too rigid. With the right technique, this is something I love to do and it puts the volume in the right spots so the design of the cut creates less of a feeling of just dragging everything down.
Here are some of my favorite looks for longer faces. To be honest, I love some of the looks and some are good but I wouldn’t say they are crazy or anything. With longer faces, the trick is finding that balance between what is flattering structurally and what gives you the confidence to leave the house, and that is perfectly fine because it is not always the same thing!

#1: Warm Chestnut Layers That Actually Do Something
I want to start with the hair because the color is beautiful. The warm chestnut shade is simply gorgeous. Also, the color works beautifully with the longer face shape and the way the layers are cut. The way the layers are designed to be that hit at the cheeks and the jaw to create roundness at the right places. This is excellent especially with finer hair because it adds a lot of volume and movement with out being too dramatic. You will have to come in for regular maintenance every 6-8 weeks, but it isn’t too drastic and the color fades so it best to come in for touch ups. If you like being polished and put together, then this is a great option. There is a lot going on in the cut but it is still fairly simple. I love everything about this.

#2: Straight Cut with Soft Curled Ends
At first, this haircut can seem pretty basic. However, looking at the ends, you can see that they are curled, giving lots of movement to the hair, especially without any layering. The hair is cut straight across the bottom, which is great for thicker hair as it helps keep the weight of the hair evenly distributed, avoiding that triangle shape that nobody wants. I think the most interesting part of this haircut is the subtle graduation at the back, which not a lot of people tend to ask for. It does add a touch of interest though. If your hair is poker straight, you might want to think about how you’re going to achieve that curl at the ends, because you will need a round brush and a fair bit of patience if you want to get them to do what you want. For longer faces this haircut works really well, as the curled ends will provide a nice break.

#3: Golden Blonde Waves That Catch Everything
When it comes to hairstyles, I love the style that features multiple tones of blonde. I think this particular hairstyle is beautiful because of the golden waves that flow down to the shoulders. Additionally, I like the way the different colors in the hair reflect the light. Long faces are complemented by waves, like the ones in this style. The width of the hair will soften the look of the face, especially with the variation of colors throughout. The movement adds texture to the hairstyle. Finer hair can make achieving a beachy look seem difficult, but this hairstyle really does give the appearance of thick and full hair. Now, here comes one of the downsides… the maintenance. You will need to use color-safe shampoos. You’ll also have to touch it up regularly. Blonde hair like this is beautiful, but it requires a lot of work to keep it looking that way. This beautiful hairstyle will soften your features, and for those who enjoy frequently visiting the salon, it will be an excellent choice that requires a lot of maintenance!

#4: Sleek and Simple Mid-Length With Soft Tapering
As I always say, clean is good! I always love a mid length style with some face framing layers. It looks so good and so even! The tapering layers around the face help keep the shape balanced without the bulk. A cut like this is perfect for medium to thick hair. The best part is, this style is a little bit low maintenance. You may need some oil and a round brush to get everything in place and you are good to go! You can wear this style to work, dinner or even dress it up for a more formal occasion!

#5: Tousled Medium Layers for the Low-Effort People
This shows a lot of potential for people who don’t want to do much effort and want to mix different layers. It gives a styled appearance while also allowing the hair to move and flow. This style indicates effort and also avoids looking like they have tried too hard. The part of the style appears natural and I do think it gives a more realistic appearance than most people think. It goes well with straight and wavy hair, and honestly, it is one of the more helpful styles for people who are not going to blowdry their hair every day, which, right, most people are not going to do that. Just remember that these types of layers will need to be trimmed more often than one-length cuts, because with one-length cuts, the ends look awful, but with layers, the ends just look messy.

#6: Rich Chestnut with Waves That Frame Everything Perfectly
I love this! The haircut and color complement each other perfectly. The chestnut color is warm and rich. The layers softly and smoothly frame the face, drawing focus to the cheekbones and eyes, which is the goal with longer face shapes. The waves add volume and create fullness without crossing the line into looking like “too much” hair. Believe it or not, I’ve seen many people cross that line. If your hair is fine or medium in density, this is the type of haircut that will give you more body. I will say that this look does require some maintenance in terms of the waves. You’ll want to get yourself a large barrel curling wand or braid it before bed, since those layers will want to lay flat if you leave them alone. But you’re effort will absolutely payoff.

#7: Chestnut Waves with a Touch of Balayage
The highlights done on your hair are very pretty and well done. They bring the attention vertically, which is good for the appearance of rounder faces. An already longer face shape should be careful with more vertical pull, though. Longer layers and added waves are great to avoid too much density in the look and create a good enough level of hair. About color, balayage is usually meant to look low maintenance, but the reality is that it requires salon visits every couple of months to keep highlights blended and roots fresh. Overall this style is great and practical for everyday use, and can be dressed up easily too, which is a plus.

#8: Soft Waves and Curtain Bangs, a Combination I Will Always Love
Curtain bangs can be seen in this example and how they suit longer faces. These bangs also decrease the noticeable height of the forehead and the overall height of the face. The soft waves in the centre of the hair break the stiffness of the style and create breadth. This helps the width balance all the way down. The warm, natural-looking chestnut color is a great compromise, especially seeing as it is a color that grows out nicely. I always say this type of style requires some morning work, whether it be refreshing the waves or adjusting the bangs because curtain bangs can look unfinished if the bangs aren’t styled. Most people think it will take hours, but it will literally take less than five minutes once it’s styled, and a bit of texturizing spray will leave you entirely beautified. If you have a longer face and have been thinking of getting curtain bangs, do it! I highly recommend curtain bangs.

#9: Blended Blonde Layers, Clean and Easy
I really appreciate how polished and organized everything appears. Blending is so good that you don’t even realize it until the hair moves. The gradient of colors from the dark roots to the blonde ends is just the right amount of contrast. It is a good decision considering the fade is the most interesting part. The side layers are wide and nice which are great for longer faces. This will also have a functional purpose if your hair is fine or medium. It will remove weight so the hair doesn’t hang limp, and it will create a fall that is non-styled. The most important thing to keep the layers fresh is to get hair trimmed often because as fine hair grows out the layers become less visible.

#10: Bold Black Layers with Volume
Customers walking into a business can feel negative impressions of the store by simply looking at a staff member’s uniform, but with this outfit, staff will look and feel like themselves (and have an increased sense of self esteem) with the addition of a raven-black infusion for some volume. If a customer has an elongated facial structure and loves the leaves cut with volume, this cut will suit you. It will work with and enhance your natural features, including your hair, if it’s straight to wavy (not too dense), and will not fight against the hair (meaning it will not detract from it). With this cut, most of the simple drama and fascination are enhanced without a lot of work (meaning there are not a lot of styling requirements). The color of your hair will require a lot of maintenance because it will require the most effort of all the components to keep it looking good and will reveal an immediate commitment factor paired with this outfit.

#11: Auburn Curls with Those Bangs
THE REWRITE WILL BE OVER 200 WORDSIt’s WOW! These stunning bangs and your gorgeous hair color are totally great! The stylist has so much personality, and I love how she went fully curly. The curls and bangs will draw attention to your eyes, which will be so flattering. Especially with the bangs and the added length, they will also give the hair a little extra width to the face and then that’s just going to pull all the attention to the eye area. With a style like this, you’ll want hair that is medium to thicker density and has a little wave or curl to it, and you’re actually halfway there! To be honest it doesn’t take too much effort to keep it looking this way, but it will require the right products to maintain the curls. You’ll want to use a good defining curl cream and have a diffuser on hand as well. Your wash days might be a little more involved because you’ll have to do a little more to maintain the curls. You’re also going to want to keep the bangs trimmed because they’re going to start hitting you in the eyes before you know it. Overall this is a high maintenance style, but it is totally worth it.

#12: Curly Bob with a Soft Fringe
The curly bob is an adorable hairstyle. The soft fringe completes the look. The added volume on the sides helps to widen the face while the fringe shortens the appearance of the top! The shapes of the hair are stunning! At this length, curls work best with medium to thick hair. This helps to avoid the hair being too wild or too stiff. You will need to come in for regular trims to keep the fringe light and shaped, to avoid looking helmet-like. Light-hold gels will keep your curls looking defined and great! Overall this is a really fun hairstyle!

#13: Clean Mocha Bob with Sharp Edges
Let’s look at this bob. The design is very clean and precise. The mocha tone is doing a lot, too. The straight edges give it a modern architecture feel that I personally find appealing for the right person. The crown volume ensures it doesn’t look too flat or severe against the head. This bob should look nice with medium to thick hair because it should hold the shape well, meaning it won’t require a lot of daily fussing. However, the edges will need to be trimmed to maintain the bob, otherwise, it will look grown out. I also really like the hair colour. It’s warm and deep without being red or dark, and looks nice with fair skin. This is a neat bob for anyone who prefers clean lines, and if you like a highly polished look, then this is a great option. Not everyone can pull off precision, but when it works, it really works.

#14: Tousled Chocolate Layers
This hairstyle is chocolate brown layered cut with some nice added texture. The brown color is a nice contrast against the hair texture. This cut elongates longer faces because the layers give the hair some body and width. There’s a nice root lift which gives the top some volume. This style is great for many occasions. On the flip side, a tousled look may not be natural for some, If you don’t want to start your day with a round brush, some product, and a bit of effort, it may look quite dead. This hairstyle is sure to have volume because of the waves. The layered cut will also work great if you have some natural waves.

#15: Ash Brown With Face-Framing Highlights
The tapered ends and layered lengths provide softness and movement, while the highlighting placement around the eyes and cheekbone structure gives a rounded effect. The look especially works for cool and pink undertones as the ash brown base offers depth and neutralizes things without the washout effect. End curls shorten the face and soften the overall look which is a nice touch! Regarding the detail, thick, straight, or slightly wavy hair will look like this naturally which is a bonus. Just be sure to keep up with the ends as long hair with layers will show damage fast. When the hair grows out, toned highlights will need to be refreshed and the face framing highlights will need to show intentional placement.
