I keep returning to this style, not just because it is trendy but because it solves problems for clients. For instance, I remember about a year ago I had a client who had been growing her hair out for 2 years and was so bored with it that she was about to do an impulsive chop into a pixie. After a bit of talking, we settled on a layered lob, and turning her to the mirror was an incredible joy. She had kept the length she worked for, and she had shape, movement, and something that felt like *her*.
This particular haircut has variety because of the way people style their hair. The layers can be styled in a way where they are subtle and don’t stand out a lot, or they can be textured and more livable. This cut gives enough length and layers for people to freely choose how they’d like to style their hair cut. This haircut is not only versatile and durable but also works perfectly and adjusts to different types and textures of hair. That is not something you see very often. I have personally done and styled different variations of this haircut on hair that seemed to fine and slippery but also hair that was coarse and thick. I have done this on hair that was coarse and thick and felt lighter and more manageable. There really is a version of this haircut for everyone so let me show you some of my favorite variations.

#1: Textured Long Bob with Soft Layers
The gentle layers that the bob provides, help to create movement that a blunt cut on finer hair lacks. We also love the softer framing of the face, which adds to the effortless quality of the cut. If you want a style that you can just wash and go; this would be it. From our perspective, this would also be really nice with some added balayage.

#2 Modern Layered Long Bob with Soft Dimension
When it comes to haircuts that look attractive and give off an effortless vibe, this is the style. It is light and airy and has the perfect amount of layering to give it lift and fullness without being too heavy. This is the type of cut that can go from an adorably styled ponytail to an elegant updo for school pick up and then to a fully styled look for dinner, which is quite frankly the most common request I get from my clients when they sit in my chair.

#3 Textured Long Bob with Soft Beachy Waves
What brings me back to this is the wave pattern because it is just right – not too tight and not too loose. It gives the entire cut this relaxed vibe that is hard to achieve if the layers are done wrong. And the ombre situation is great – the warm blonde melting into a deeper root means you aren’t tied to the salon every six weeks. You end up with that nice sun-kissed look that grows out really well. Natural texture in the hair will make this a dream.

#4 Warm Chocolate Layered Long Bob with Subtle Waves
The beautiful shade of chocolatey hair and the warmth will make the skin look healthy and alive. The slight asymmetry at the front may look like a small detail but it actually makes a real difference. It stops the style from looking too neat and predictable. For medium to thick hair, especially, these longer layers remove bulk and show the hair’s natural shape. Just keep up with your trims on this one because those longer pieces can look a little ragged if you leave them too long.

#5 Stylish Layered Long Bob with Soft Waves
The version of layered lob shown here is appealing. It is a good suggestion for those new to having any kind of layered cut, and who may be hesitant about how far to go. It is definitely not boring, and although the style is quite simple the layers and waves are very noticeable and avoid the style looking flat against the head. A touch of shine serum at the ends would finish this off nicely, as you can already see the light catching it.

#6 Textured Long Bob with Subtle Waves
This light balayage does just what it is meant to do, creating just enough contrast to highlight the texture of the cut without detracting from the overall shape it provides. When it comes to finer hair, it’s important to be careful with layering as you can very quickly lose density, so whoever did this is clearly making sure to get the balance right. It has body and movement to it without looking straggly around the ends. To keep it looking sharp, regular trims will help with that, and in between appointments a good dry texture spray will help to keep those waves from falling flat.

#7 Effortlessly Chic Layered Long Bob
This is the sort of haircut that gets people saying, “”I just want it to look like I didn’t try.” But looking like you didn’t try takes work! The base features of this cut are great because they do the majority of the work of the cut for you. The tousled texture and soft face framing pieces feel like they actually blend in. On fine to medium hair, this creates an illusion of fullness which is always a win.

#8 Warm Chestnut Layered Long Bob with Soft Curls
First of all, I really like the shade of chestnut brown. It has warm, deep tones, and almost looks like it has some dimension because of subtle color variations due to the red or the brown. This means the color also shifts based on the lighting. I think loose curls look best with the light and color shifts of this hair color. If you’re hair is medium to thick and you’re wanting to go warmer, this is a great reference picture to show to your stylist. The curls will take some time to do with a curling iron, but it will look good straight, with a bend, or with waves, so consider that if you don’t want to do a lot of work.

#9 Textured Long Bob with Face-Framing Layers
I love how face framing pieces work with this look. The length is perfect for creating openings around the cheekbone area and bringing the focus in, super complimenting if you class your face as rounder. Also love how the natural wave of the hair gives a lot of body to the style with minimal product and tools. It’s one of those styles that seems effortless and will look amazing if there is a bit of natural texture in your hair.

#10 Modern Layered Long Bob with Subtle Highlights
The highlights are super intentionally positioned around the face, and that’s what gives this cut its freshness. With all over coloring, that can be done just anywhere, but here, it’s more strategic and makes the layers pop more than a single process would. The length just below the chin gives it a slightly more grown-up feel than some of the other versions. This one does require some styling attention to look its best, so if you do like to use a round brush, you’ll love how it responds.

#11 Effortlessly Tousled Layered Long Bob
The balayage done here is spectacular. It seamlessly blends into the layers of the hair to add depth without looking stripy or dated. With medium to thick hair, this level of layering is the sweet spot because it creates great movement and texture without the ends looking too wispy. I’d consider this a wash-and-go cut for anyone with a bit of natural wave, which is honestly the dream for most of my clients. But do be sure to keep up with your trims every eight weeks or so, because layers this good deserve to be maintained.

#12 Warm Toned Layered Long Bob with Subtle Highlights
I love how the shade is warm without being brassy, and the highlights are woven so finely that it just looks like the sun caught some pieces. You can really appreciate the natural wave in the hair because it helps the layers create this more organic and less structured movement. This is one of those cuts that looks good on day 1 after a blowout as well as day 3, which is some of the highest praise I can give a haircut.

#13 Softly Layered Long Bob with Natural Shine
The gloss here is what it’s all about. It indicates a certain level of health and care that elevates the entire haircut’s perceived value. The length that hits right at the shoulders is that ideal point where it’s long enough to be put up, but short enough to have real shape when it’s down and out. The layers are soft and they aren’t chopping into the density too aggressively, and that is super important because if you took too much weight out of this, you’d be sacrificing that gorgeous, shiny finish. A good hair oil on the ends would keep this looking just as it is.

#14 Chic Layered Long Bob with Soft Waves
If I see a cut like this, I have a strong desire to copy it. It has a romantic feel while also making it seem heavenly. The added balayage softens the cut, while the cut doesn’t appear to be drastic, the balayage creates depth to the layers of the cut. The waves look natural and give off the impression of having braided hair that was left to dry overnight or of having used a wand to do big sections of hair. The layers created with the mid-density of the hair adds just the right amount of body for the waves to hold the style without being too heavy.

#15 Effortlessly Textured Long Bob with Subtle Highlights
They’d leave happy as this look works in real life, not just in photos. It looks effortless with the waves being super undone and the highlights add just enough contrast to keep it interesting. It goes from looking like the person spent a ton of time on their hair to looking like they have great hair, which is super important. If your hair has some natural movement to it, you’re basically already halfway there. For everyone else, a quick pass with a wave iron and you’re set.
