I remember the last person who sat in my chair and said, “I want something different, but not too different.” I knew we were heading straight for the long layered bob. I love doing this haircut, and I’ll be doing it for years to come. This style actually delivers. You get just enough change, while keeping the length to feel like yourself. The layers are where it’s at! The layers do all the work in creating movement and shape. When cut properly, they fall into place for that effortless look. That’s the goal!
This cut can be customized to fit a wide variety of clients, which is awesome. Just last month, I had a client who had super fine hair and always thought her hair did nothing. We decided to cut a textured layered lob, and she literally teared up a little. *Not to be dramatic but that moment was a perfect example of why you do what you do*. It was perfect because the weight came off in just the right spots. She didn’t know her hair could be this full of life. It doesn’t matter what type of hair you have; straight? curly? Whatever it is, there is a version of this cut that is going to work for you and I’ve rounded up 15 of my favorites to show you.

#1: Soft Feathered Layers on a Long Bob
I really love this cut. It brings me so much joy because the layering is just right, not overdone, and is perfect for face framing. I love how this cut looks polished and cohesive, while still having a lot of movement. If you have medium or thick hair this is the cut for you. It really is just the perfect amount to lighten the volume of the hair so that the hair can really have great volume. This is easily one of the most low maintenance cuts. The hair looks great with just a little mousse and round brushing. It even looks great air dried. You can wear this cut so many ways throughout the week and it will still look amazing.

#2 Warm Copper Layered Lob
I have a particular fondness for copper tones, and this one is beautiful. The warm copper is beautiful, and the soft layers that hit just above the collarbone, are stunning. The layers give great movement so that it doesn’t just sit flat, and the color has so much dimension that you really don’t need to add anything more. But, considering warmth in your hair color means being prepared for the upkeep, as that warm color fades quickly, and you’ll need consistent trims so the layers don’t look wildly grown out. This is the look I would suggest to someone with fine to medium hair that is wanting a dramatic change without going for a short cut.

#3 Textured Lob with Face-Framing Pieces
Soft face-framing layers combined with some texture at the ends make fine hair look significantly fuller. And the natural waves create the effortless sort of look – you know the one? The “I woke up like this” sort of vibe. I do want to be honest though, most don’t get that easy beachy look. To get this look you will probably want to use some sea salt spray and then scrunch it, or use a diffuser. The cool thing about this haircut is that it also works with color, so you could add some highlights or balayage and it would look awesome!

#4 Gentle Layers with a Warm Ombre Fade
First, I would have to mention the color! The warm ombre gradient that moves from deep roots down to honey-lit ends is stunning! The face-framing layers are soft and natural, and overall the impact is not overdone. Most people look good with hair that falls around the shoulders, because you can pull it back if you need to, but it looks intentional when it’s down. The ombre makes this style interesting even when you haven’t put a lot of effort into styling it, and it always looks like you have a lot going on with your hair.

#5 Beachy Waves on a Textured Long Bob
This style reminds me of coming back from an event! The soft and loose waves with layers create fantastic movement and keep the style kept flowing. The subtle highlights also add nice depth to the style so it won’t look overdone. The length is right above the shoulders so it is super easy to manage as well. This cut will give fine to medium hair tons of volume. Don’t get me wrong, those waves do take a few minutes with a curling wand. The good thing is if you are the type to plan ahead you can always braid it when it’s damp the night before!

#6 Layered Lob with a Soft Wave
This is a further refined version of the lob and for some reason, this looks more quiet and more stunning. The waves and the layers add the right amount of texture to not look blunt or boring. It hits just below the chin which is a length I honestly do not see enough people go for and it works on so many different face shapes because it is long enough to soften angles but short enough to show off your jaw. This cut will really love medium density hair. You will have to keep trimming on a regular basis though because at this length, you very much notice when things start looking scraggly.

#7 Soft Textured Layers Just Above the Shoulders
This style features layers that shape and frame the face, above the shoulder length is also really flattering and modern. The texture is ideal to avoid a helmet appearance. Blended highlights creates dimension, which contributes a lot to the overall look. If your hair is very fine, and I am being honest, it is very likely that you will require a volumizing product to be worked into the roots to achieve a full and bouncy look. The cut alone most likely won’t be enough to give that look without some help.

#8 Subtle Layered Lob with Soft Face Framing
I appreciate this haircut because it is straightforward. The layers are done well, and the soft framing layers give her hair a more refined look. At this length, she has a lot of versatility; with the option to have a more refined look when her hair is straight or a loose and casual look on other days. This haircut will feel very light and free if your hair is medium to fine. It’s a quick process to maintain the layered look, and you’ll likely find the cut is low maintenance.

#9 Gentle Waves on a Layered Long Bob
These waves may look out of place to some, but I love that . I like the contrast and color differences in the style. The layering adds enough movement for the eye to travel all the way around. Because of the versatility I can recommend the style to almost anyone, I know it will work with so many face shapes. The waves will not likely be “wash and go” for most hair types which means some effort will be needed to style, but will achieve the effortlessly styled look that you may really want. Totally worth it.

#10 Face-Framing Feathered Layers on a Lob
The ends have feathering, which lends a nice airy look which is lovely as it moves. I appreciate the length, resting on the shoulders, it’s a good length because it gives you options. It is lovely how the layers really accentuate and frame the face, and the natural wavy texture adds interest to the style. Overall, it is very polished without looking too stiff. If you’re looking for a nice, low-maintenance style, this is a great option. If I were to make a recommendation, it would be to add a little defining cream to the ends.

#11 Textured Lob with a Natural Wave
This features such a lovely texture, and I do love a good natural wave. Some are fortunate enough to be gifted with lovely waves, and some of us just have to deal with the jealousy. I appreciate the subtle layering, as it looks nice and is not chunky or obvious. The way the layers are blended looks nice and gives a cohesive look. I think medium density will wear this best because it feels like just the right amount of volume and movement. The cut sits just over the shoulders making it easy to style as well as easy to live with. I do always tell to people with cuts like these to stay on top of their trim schedule since a lot of people will grow their layers out and once those start growing out unevenly it can go from intentional to messy like that.

#12 Wavy Lob with Soft Layered Movement
I would do this cut all day! It’s flattering on just about everyone and has a nice relaxed vibe to it. The waves are soft and the layers create nice natural movement. This length is just above the shoulders, it always works. If your hair is wavy, or you have some natural wave to it, you are going to love how low maintenance this is, it basically styles itself! Finer hair types will appreciate the volume the layers give without it feeling heavy or overdone.

#13 Textured Lob with a Subtle Ombre Shift
I like the subtlety in this ombre style. It acts as an accent rather than a main feature, so it works in providing some extra dimension and warmth. It’s nice that it looks good on straight and wavy hair (or even no styling at all!). The frame around the face and the hairstyle texture are cut nicely, and the color shift will definitely make the days at the hair less boring. I like their color, but it’s going to need a refresh every few months to prevent it from getting muddied, but the cut will still look good as it grows out.

#14 Auburn Lob with Soft Textured Waves
I’m really loving that warm rich auburn color! It looks so full of life. The cut looks casual and shapely with the subtle waves. The layered texture keeps the volume where it needs to be. I love this color for the season. It’s such a lovely warm light and skin toned red combo. The cut and color give a manageable length combo! I think auburn is such a good level of commitment! You’ll definitely be wanting to do color-depositing treatments!

#15 Effortless Beachy Lob with Lived-In Layers
This has truly stood the test of time. That effortless look is so appealing, and crafting it intentionally is maybe one of the most deceptively difficult things to do, especially considering how well this looks. The highlights here are warm and sun-kissed, and the layers are soft, blended, and unfussy, with a length just above the shoulders. This cut works well with most hair types, but especially with fine to medium hair, as the additional layers will give the illusion of even more hair, without any added weight. Thicker hair can pull this off too, but some extra thinning may be necessary if you want to achieve that airy feeling. It is a super simple cut, and that is why it is also one of my favorites on this list.

#16 Layered Lob with Soft Dimensional Highlights
You’ve made a good choice because it can be tough to find a haircut that looks effortlessly great and can even be dressed up for special occasions. Your layered highlights and waves are a perfect combination, and they give your hair a multi-dimensional look rather than a flat one. With medium to thick hair, the cut will also fall nicely just above your shoulders. You will need to schedule maintenance every six to eight weeks to keep the cut looking as good as it can. It will definitely be worth it because you won’t need to do any work every day as the cut will do all the work for you!
