Long bobs are a haircut that teaches me patience. I’ve been taking clients for years waiting for me to do something drastic, and almost all of them have their mind changed about themselves by the long bob. It is not a big change, but when it comes to length not too long and not too short, it can really change your entire face.
There was a client who grew out her hair for 3 years after a bad breakup because the length was proof she had moved on. The moment she got to cut it to collarbone length, she cried, laughed, and said she finally felt like herself. That’s the beauty of a long bob. It’s not meant to make you look like anyone else. It just takes enough hair off for you to really see the magic. The actual difference can be epic from blunt, shiny, uneven, messy, warm balayage to white, and from no layers to fully feathered. I collected a bunch of extra examples for you guys, because they are real and not just for the model.
#1: Soft Waves and Quiet Highlights on a Clean Lob
When looking at these photos, I can sense a certain calmness. Waves gently move the hair, highlights are placed so that they are subtle, and the light is caught perfectly. The hair is cut so that it sits just above the shoulders. Medium and thick hair will give balanced movement and weight to the cut, and it will actively hold the cut’s shape during the day. This will even work for the finer side of hair, only the waves would probably require some assistance from a 1.25″ iron and a light hold spray to keep them from falling. What I admire most is that the cut looks so calm and not overdone.
#2: Full-Bodied Feathered Lob with Soft Volume at the Crown
This hairstyle really highlights how great the shape of the style is. The rounded back lifts the hair and gives a more rounded effect to the hair without visible stacking. The face framing pieces brush the cheek and provide a nice soft drape around the face. This cut will work best with you if you have a thicker and slightly coarser hair texture. You have the right amount of hair to fully support the style without needing a blowout. If you have thinner hair, it would result in a loss of volume which creates the great look without any effort to do it. It is also worth mentioning, with coarser hair that puffs more and does not fall, it helps to use a bit of a smoothing serum in the mid lengths to calm it down a little and get everything to settle in.

The middle curtain is doing a lot. Everything looks softer. No bangs. The tips of the hair have light internal layering so the ends move but aren’t too wispy.
It’s the type of hair that just screams shadow roots and a soft balayage. It’s the type of hair that looks like it just naturally looks like how it does.
If you find that your tips get a little warm or untoned, just do a demi-gloss every six weeks or so because it helps everything look nice to touch.
#4: Caramel-Kissed Wavy Lob with Face-Brightening Placement
To start, the first thing that I notice is how the colors are positioned. Right where the caramel falls, the pieces around the cheeks are warm while the back are cooler. That shows that color placement is done with thought, and the placement doesn’t feel over done. The haircut is basic, going to collarbone with soft layering and slight internal razor cut at the ends to break the line, which look nice on wavy and a little textured hair. Thinner hair can pull this off. For thicker hair some extra internal thinning will be needed to keep the ends from getting heavy. The balayage will shift warmer over time, so keep toning it.

The first detail that caught my attention is that tiny warm piece right at the face, almost reddish, hardly there. It isn’t really a money piece, it’s like a whisper of warmth that lifts the skin tone. It’s actually piecey without looking choppy which takes some restraint on the stylist’s part. If you want to recreate those waves at home, a diffuser will do, or a quick pass with a 1” iron, but on very fine hair this particular structure might flatten out. And that warm strand, as pretty as it is, will need a little toner refresh to stop it from fading to muddy.
#6: Curtain-Banged Collarbone Lob with Light, Airy Ends
I really like how this cut and length work with the curtain bangs. These bangs are meant to open the face while the long bob (lob) doesn’t close it down. The ends are also lightly razor textured, “light” as in it’s not thin, and the internal layering gives it shape without looking all “done”. It looks great straight or with loose waves, and with medium to thick density, it gives the effortless swinging movement that people always ask me for. The tradeoff with the curtain bangs is that they need to be trimmed every four to five weeks or they’ll start doing their own thing. Having a little crown cowlick (many people do), a few shorter layers and some baby lights will help disguise it.
#7: Cool Ash Lob with Rounded Shape and a Thin Brightening Piece
I appreciate the tranquil feel of the style. It is truly the antithesis of drama and has been executed wonderfully. The base is one length all the way around with a round graduation, which helps form that pretty, natural, inward swing. The face frame is long, and curtain-like, so it moves and flows beautifully. The very subtle babylights at the cheeks are so well-placed because they lift the face without pulling focus, which is great. This shape is ideal for fine to medium hair. If it’s feeling a little flat, you might want to ask for some internal texturizing. I love ashy tones, but they require a lot of maintenance to keep them looking cool and beautiful. They will require frequent toning, and a little root lift spray is a must. A round brush will keep the ends flipped under so they aren’t hanging limp.
#8: Silver-Framed Lob with Natural Contrast and Easy Movement
I have a special appreciation for those who let their natural grey hair grow out and show it’s beauty. In this case, the grey at the temples has been left and seen as face framing, which of course takes a lot of confidence. The grey has also been blended with the rest of her hair which looks intentional and not just grown out. The cut is also doing the right things with soft internal layering and slightly flipped perimeter. This gives medium to thick hair room to move without getting heavy. The challenge is in the color. You will need targeted glossing in order to not create banding where the grey meets the pigmented hair. When everything is done right, the contrast can be so beautiful. This soft silver grey hair will frame and contrast beautifully with darker pigmented hair. You can’t fake it.
#9: Ash-Beige Feathered Lob with a Sweeping Side Part
The deep side sweep works really well to create a wide and soft dramatic curtain of hair across the forehead. The feathered layers in the middle really give the crown life, and the ends have that slight round brush outward flick that happens when the interior graduation meets a round brush. It also blends the natural grey really well with ash-beige babylights, so it’s one of my favorite approaches for clients that want to soften the transition, rather than cover it completely. This style really demands a round brush blowout, It needs the tension to hold the flip and lift. The lighter front pieces will shift over time, so consider a toning appointment every couple of months to keep everything looking good.
#10: Curtain-Framed Lob with Quiet Caramel Depth
This cut catches the eye and has that wow factor in person, which is not always the case. Long internal layers and point cutting add movement without looking choppy and the curtain bangs frame everything softly. These micro low lights are interesting, they are subtle enough to be missed until the light hits them, adding a soft depth that single process color just can’t achieve. This style is honestly easy to maintain on straight to wavy, medium density hair. Coarse or tightly curled textures will require a different approach and the low lights will need to be glazed periodically to keep the tones from drifting apart.
#11: Cool Ash Mid-Lob with Clean Lines and Soft Texture
I appreciate the choices you made. The overall shape is clear and blunt, just enough point-texturing so the ends don’t seem overly harsh. The soft center is nice, especially since it opens up the face, but doesn’t mess it up. The shadow-root melt into fine ash babylights is great – that kind of tonal work takes a steady hand to avoid going too ashy vs. muddy. When this shape is applied to fine to medium straight hair, it’s going to be so easy to style. Thick hair will require a little bit of internal slide cutting to remove some weight without losing the nice clean baseline. There’s a nice internal bevel right at the jawline – details that most won’t notice, but those details help the ends tuck under nicely when brushed against the collar. Little details like that make a big difference.

The round brush inward curl isn’t just gonna happen so it should be a goal you plan to achieve. It’ll all be worth it with the clarity of the gloss. Great looking cut aside, this style is about to have you working.
#15: Angled Lob with a Thin Brightening Piece
There is a possibility that the haircuts that look a bit classic are also the ones that look the most modern and this haircut is a good example of it. It features a blunt cut and soft internal graduation with some point cutting at the ends, but she/his has the right proportions and the execution is immaculate making it look very effortless. The thin framing piece is done greatly to elevate her skintone, not not overdone, and with just a hint of brightness at the eye. On her straight hair of medium density, the cut will look ideal with some loose waves or a sleek blowout, while the gloss glaze will give a mirror effect making the cut look expensive. The ash colors will look warm over time, so once you book your cutting appointment make sure to book your toning one as well.
#16: Clean Blunt Lob with a Gentle Inward Bend
This is the kind of cut that excels in simplicity. It’s a blunt cut that is shoulder length and features that almost imperceptible bend at the tips that suggest a perfect tension cut with a micro bevel. it looks immaculate on straight, medium density dark hair. This shape goes perfectly with glasses, especially the more minimal styles that won’t compete with the frame. It has a subtle interior graduation so it doesn’t feel heavy, but if your hair is on the thicker side, I would suggest a bit more internal texture to keep it moving. On most days, all this needs is a bit of low heat styling.
#17: Warm Chocolate Lob with Waves and Quiet Shine
The shine of this creation is what stands out most to me. The base glaze is a deep chocolate that gives a mirror finish, and the waves of gloss look like they are flowing. There are enough lowlights to provide shadow and the whole creation looks dimensional without obvious color work. The interior point cutting and the work it does is also valuable. It does remove weight from the inside so that the 2A-2B natural wave pattern can really express itself without being flattened by density. It’s a pretty cut. However, those waves may need some help to hold. A 1-1.25” wand and a light styling cream should do the trick.
#18: Warm Caramel Lob with Relaxed Texture
Textured lobs look healthy and the warm caramel colors convey that glow the most. I love this one! The cut’s relaxed waves make me think she let her hair dry naturally and maybe finger brushed it, but the layers do a lot to add volume. The warm colors and layers add a lot of dimension to the hair and it’s nice that it looks great on so many skin tones, which can be tough to do. While this look is great on coarse hair, if fine hair is the case, a really good texturizing spray is a must to bring the body. If this isn’t done, the waves likely won’t be able to hold their shape by the end of the day.
#19: Bright Money-Piece Lob with Cool Dimension and an Outward Flip
The outward flip is the first detail I notice, and it strikes the right balance between current and trendy. The reverse taper and internal stacking are designed so the hair kicks out naturally as opposed to under, creating that effortless quality that is so hard to achieve with a flat iron. The bright money piece is a statement and it works here because it’s softened by the shadow root and the gloss in beige-violet pulls all of the pieces together into a cohesive palette. This is genuinely beautiful on fine to medium wavy hair. Very straight hair is going to need a 32mm barrel to achieve that flip and very thick hair may resist going outward so the cut would need to be adjusted to accommodate that.
#20: Cool Platinum Lob with a Soft Shadow Root
I’ll say it, it is an amazing color, but it’s going to cost you. Cool Ash Platinum is going to pull effort to maintain, though it looks amazing with certain skin tones and pictures gorgeously, it is going to require monthly touch-up toning, 4 bonding treatments, and protective styling every time you use heat. The cut is phenomenal – it’s a blunt lob with some soft internal layering and a long curtain fringe that exposes the face but doesn’t show too much forehead and on fine to medium straight hair, it’s stunnnnning. It’s also super to blow dry. But the color a show-stopper. It’s gorgeous, but there’s going to be a lot of upkeep. If you’re not ready for that, there are less permanent ways to get a look similar to this.
#21: Warm Chestnut Lob with Airy Volume
I can’t help but admire this particular crown piece. The lift looks natural due to the gradation we have achieved inside, which pairs well with the medium-fine texture that has the right density to assume the shape. The soft feathered face frame really softens the look and opens it up, all without adding any weight. The point cutting at the ends give the perimeter that effortlessly undone look. Subtle babylights add some dimension without detracting from the overall warmth of the chestnut base. This is a style that comes alive with a round brush blowout because the heat and tension create a polished look that is not stiff. Shape does relax a lot without it, so this is better suited to someone who enjoys spending a few minutes with a dryer in the mornings.

It is great because it is long enough to pull into an updo, but short enough that you can wear it down and it looks great. The additional texture looks good because it offers more volume without looking too thin to fall flat. A haircut like this requires regular trims more than other hairstyles to keep the shape, but it requires less effort to style. You can wear it sleek and polished one day, and then the next day it can be worn tousled and messy and it will look cute both ways.
#24: Choppy Dark Brunette Lob with Subtle Lift at the Nape
The word sensory richness is most appropriate for the chestnut brown, with its ability to describe light in a way that blondes cannot do. The way the chestnut brown captures light is almost poetic. The point-cut layers that make this also happen to be a few inches at most. This style is not fully what people would call layered and definitely not in the way that uniform curtains lack softness. The gentle stacking here is just enough to keep this hairstyle from being overly dated or blocky. It is also what creates that effortless chic look when coupled with naturally wavy hair that is abundant and straight from the shower. This type of hair is what makes a cut like this almost a perfect cut because the styling time is so low. This type of hair would likely be fine or lightly curly and that would be more suited to individual internal structures separate from the rest of the body. Regardless of that, this style is gorgeous when done with the right hair.

I appreciate the easy-going vibe of this cut, and it looks completely undone which is amazing! The highlights are very understated, and give the impression that she doesn’t visit the salon every week. This cut will showcase, not change, the waves you have. The layers will give medium and fine hair the added volume! Truthfully, if your hair is thick, you will need to do a lot more internal cutting to avoid it being too bulky. It gives a polished appearance that is always suitable. It might sound plain, but there are very few haircuts that can achieve this.
#26: Clean Shoulder-Length Lob with an Inward-Turning Flip
The interior graduation technique used here is executed really well. You can see this with how the ends all want to turn inwards to form this nice polished flip. It may look effortless but there is a lot of engineering that has gone into the design. The middle section has soft curtain face-framing to keep everything looking completely symmetrical and neat. For fine to medium straight hair with a medium density, this gives a neat look with little effort every morning, and without having to spend time styling it. This hairstyle only looks better with a quick touch up by the straightener or a round brush blow dry, but it stays nice and tidy in the shape it is styled to when everything is a bit rushed. To achieve such a clean look, a lot of precision cutting is required so this haircut is best done by someone who knows how to do interior graduation well. Lastly, a subtle root shadow or toner will keep it looking coherent as it grows out.

What first catches my eye is the colourful balayage that isn’t done too close to the roots so it looks like it was done by a sun rather than a hair stylist. It looks very nice and offers a lot of warmth and a flattering face as it provides a new illusion to the face and the textured layers create enough movement so that the highlights, or new additions to the hair, shift and change in the sunlight, as it looks like the hair is in motion. In layers, the grow out in the balayage is really good as it looks good for months then you can go back and change things. However, the tones will drift a lot and if you want to change them back to a previous look, you could. This is one of those hairstyles where the hair colour and hairstyle feel like they go well and this can take some thought, but it will definitely be worth it in the end.
#28: Copper Lob with Soft Angled Movement
The first detail that catches most people’s attention is the color, a warm shimmering copper. This color is great in showcasing the warmth in skin tones. The soft angled layers will create movement as light reflects off the layers in different directions. The hair will also sit right above the shoulders, which gives it a modern look especially on straight to wavy medium-dense hair. The cut will also have a lot of movement with very little styling. I will admit that the copper color is gorgeous, but it does have some cons. Because this color is made with smaller pigmented molecules, the color will fade quicker than others. So, it will be necessary to keep up with a color deposit shampoo and routine glossing to keep the color looking fresh. Due to the upkeep involved, many people will decide that it isn’t worth the cost. However, while the color is fresh, the look will definitely be worth it.
#29: Wavy Lob with Soft Face-Framing and Natural Dimension
I always appreciate when the face-framing layers blend into the rest of the haircut rather than just sitting on top of it as obvious, separate pieces. The waves give the whole thing nice body and texture, while the subtle balayage is brightening in a way that looks more like sun exposure than salon work. With fine hair, these layers are essential because they create the illusion of a lot more hair. Without them, the hair just tends to hang. The length being just above the shoulders, is practical and flattering. Try sea salt spray or a quick wand pass, but the cut is designed to look good even when the waves are not perfectly defined.

If it is too long, the weight of the hair will pull the curl pattern down and the curls will be looser than desired. This length is just above the shoulders which is where the curls start to be free. The outer curls which are sun-kissed highlights, where it naturally lights up, are placed perfectly. This is the right instinct for curly hair as it shows the dimension of the pattern where the highlighted curls are. This is on medium to thick hair where the body is already there. Keeping the curls looking good is really about moisture and definition. Regular deep conditioning and a good curl cream will keep these looking great. At this length, curls dry out faster than expected so the most amount of care is a must. With the most care, these will look the best.

The design feature that adds character to this style is the small inward curl at the ends. With regard to the whole silhouette, it’s those little touches that do change everything. On straights, medium-density hair that sort of curl should look even inner layering. The rich brown hair color is warm and beautiful in the light. It will catch the light beautifully. If it looked like someone asked, I would probably say this cut. It’s easy to style in the morning, and the soft waves create movement and fullness. Also, the layered cut adds volume to the middle, and the shoulder length cut is out of your way. This style works really well with fine to medium hair textures since the waves will make your hair look a lot thicker, which is a great bonus. A soft balayage will also help in creating a beautiful look with light-reflecting painted strands. The waves will need some help; when they dry straight, just a gentle scrunch when it’s still damp and some product will break the waves. It’s low effort for how polished the result is.
#35: Textured Lob with Quietly Layered Movement
First, I notice the shine on the hair. That means it’s healthy, and with a haircut like this, that’s more important than most people realize. You can’t hide anything with this style. When the only thing left to be desired is the health of the hair, it becomes so obvious. We’re looking at a combination of clean-length layers and soft, subtle textures. She has hair that cuts just above the collarbone, and the texture should feel modern but without being too choppy. The cut will also work wonders in managing volume in medium and thick hair types, as it allows the hair to move. It’s one of those styles where a little extra work really pays off. A round brush and some sort of smoothing product will do a lot to improve the look. With those, it will still look nice, but it will be better with a little more effort.

They provide a warm and super natural soft dimension to the balayage combined with the soft waves. The whole look just screams lit from within! This kind of layered cut works best on medium to thick hair as the layered cut manages to control the volume and gives you a thick and bouncy look without that weighed down feeling. I get asked for this cut by so many of my clients and I think it’s perfect for someone wanting to have an effortless hair routine. The waves will take some styling to look this good but the color on these kind of looks is pretty low maintenance.

I especially enjoyed the quality of the weightlessness. The hair has an even, natural and laid-back feel to it. This soft carelessness is more easily seen in hair that is fine. The feathery layering provides shape and not keeps the hair from looking deflated. The sun-kissed highlights give the hair the appearance of fullness even if the density of the hair is low. I respect that it does not try to create something that is not there. This makes it more beautiful. A light texturizing spray can help maintain that messy, beachy look between washes, especially with fine hair as it loses the texture quicker than thicker hair.

For those with lob-length curly hair, it can be a constant struggle with their hair’s natural fight against them. Staying on the right side of this struggle can be achieved by having your stylist use a layering technique that stops tangles and allows curls to spring up as they choose. An asymmetric cut can help to maintain the natural curl pattern, and the added density of the hair may already be voluminous, so it is a good idea to use moisture-defining products along with a solid layering cut to create shape, movement and fullness to the hair. For defined, happy curls, a good cream for anti-frizz is preferable to texture products and the curls will need moisture more than anything else. Well-shaped curls will show some frizz, but don’t worry, a little added frizz will appear as added volume.
#39: Timeless Lob with Subtle Framing and Easy Polish
One of the timeless haircuts that will never go out of style is the long classic bob with face framing layers. The bob falls at shoulder length, and the shine and smoothness of the hair create an effortless and clean look. The hair is cut at medium density and straight across, which is low maintenance, and the style of the cut will not collapse with a few cuts. Out of the salon, the cut will maintain the shape of the style without complex hair styling. To keep the bob looking its best, the face framing layers should be cut intentionally and crisp, and perimeter should be tied head to keep the layers looking stringy. While to me, that may sound like an all over blended men’s haircut, to others, that might sound like a short and fitted white tee with skinny jeans. It’s simple to achieve the look, but to be perfect, it always works.
#40: Effortlessly Waved Lob with Face-Framing Softness
While I appreciate all of the different styles, what I appreciate more about this, is the fact that it looks natural and not like some of the styles that look overly slick or polished. It’s a good length to enjoy having hair, but short enough that it doesn’t restrict your movement. As we know, curls require a bit of extra styling, but it’s not a hassle when you have the right products. With lightweight mousse and a diffuser on low heat, you’ll be set. The good thing is that once styled, the curls will look better and better as the day goes on.
