Is there a conversation to be had about long blonde hair over 50? The amount of times I have heard the comment that women have to cut their hair when they get older is infuriating. A lot of the older clients that I have worked with have been some of the most stunning clients with long hair. One of the former clients of my previous salon used to get pressured by her stylist to get a pixie cut because she considered that to be “more appropriate” for her age. This client of mine told me that the other stylist was very rude for not giving her the freedom to keep her long hair, and I hadn’t even started the hair yet. We took her to a very beautiful long layered blonde (I might be exaggerating a little there. It was beautiful, but I do think that it was lightened a tad too much) and she was crying in the chair. Those moments bring even more joy to me in my work.
Not as many people consider long blonde hair flattering at this stage, but they shouldn’t be so quick to judge. It’s all about finding the right patterns with your hair. The right hair color will even take years off your face. I have 15 long blonde looks that I am currently obsessed with, and I’m giving the real, no nonsense truth on all of them.

#1: Sleek Silver Blonde That Just Looks Expensive
This is what I call silver blonde done right. The added long layers provide a nice natural movement to the hair without looking stringy which is a main concern for my fine-haired clients. The lightened ends around the face are an intentional choice to create a `lifting` effect and it does the job really well. This color requires a lot of commitment, good purple shampoo is a must as well as toning and maintenance to keep the hair from getting brassy. If you’re up for the work, the result is definitely worth it!

#2 Soft Platinum Layers That Basically Style Themselves
Let me show you why you should go platinum, especially if you have thick (or medium) hair! With this cut, there are subtle long layers, and side swept styling allows the hair to fall beautifully around the face. But what about the roots? Dark roots blended into platinum ends are always dimensional and help avoid that flat wig look. That is one of my biggest pet peeves about long, platinum hair, but this cut really steers clear of that. The cut will take minimal maintenance between your color appointments, but it’s going to be a color upkeep commitment. It will be super easy to manage!

#3 Silver Blonde Feathered Layers That Actually Have Movement
Feathered layers are weakness of mine, I just can’t get over the volume they provide! This silver blonde shade compliments maturing skin tones beautifully. It brightens the client up without being too overpowering. The root color graduation adds a lovely natural contour to the face, it is especially great for my rounder face clients. The only downside to this is that the feathering needs maintenance with trims, otherwise it just loses that purpose and becomes quite dull. Because of this, for this look it is important to keep your trim appointments!

#4 Ash Blonde Waves with Dark Roots for the Low Maintenance Queens
I love partnering with clients who want to look wonderful but would rather not spend hours in the salon. These ashy blondes with natural dark roots are perfect for flexible appointment extensions as they grow out. It looks BETTER grown out! These waves are simple and not overdone. If you have medium to thick hair, this will be amazing for you and with very little work. Just be sure to have a strong leave in conditioner to maintain the health of the mid lengths and ends because the more hair there is, the more love those ends will need!

#5 Long Bob with Full Bangs That Means Business
The haircut shown here is a long bob, but it has a different energy than the typical long bob. The bangs are also very straight and this style can definitely look very elegant on women over 50. If you have thick and straight hair, this is a cut definitely made for you. While I think the bangs will be the hardest and most daily styling to keep them looking good, the style as a whole is really low maintenance. There’s just something about this style of bangs that looks very intentional and put together. Would you agree?

#6 Silver Waves with Balayage That Looks Like You Were Born With It
When people ask, **“is that your natural color?”** it’s usually meant as a compliment. That’s the case with this look. The balayage highlights, combined with the silver base, give the prettiest effect resembling natural gray hair, which looks striking on clients with softer, thinner hair as the waves create an illusion of more volume. The contrast with the added color will also give your hair the appearance of more fullness, as well as add more dimension. If you have a natural wave, then a good wave spray over the hair will help the waves look better and more defined. Well, silver. You know.

#7 Silver Blonde Waves with Face-Framing Highlights That Glow
The best placement always has lighter pieces around the face. This is natural lighting. The added face framing layers are a great choice. They lift the hair and soften the overall look, but it’ll really look like you’re trying to relive the 80s. For medium to thick hair that is graying, this is a great option since the blonde will mask the gray and root growth. You’ll have less root stress. The color will dry the hair so be sure to do regular trims to keep your ends healthy and add in a deep conditioning treatment.

#8 Golden Blonde Layers That Make Everything Look Softer
Golden blonde is a warm color, and I like the way it looks here because it is not too brassy. The layered lights frame the face beautifully and draw the eye to the center, which is always the desired effect in my opinion. This color and cut will especially work well for you if you have a bit of natural volume in your hair. However, for my clients with fine hair, it may require a little extra effort to keep the layers defined, and that might entail doing a round brush blow dry. I’ll be honest, keeping golden blonde hair from fading to an undesirable color does require some maintenance, but it’s worth it.

#9 Glossy Golden Blonde with Feathered Ends That Move
I am not exaggerating when I say that the shine and gloss on this hair is unreal. The color shine is doing at least 50% of the work. Also, the feathered ends give you movement without losing length. This is what you want when you have fine to medium hair and want to avoid that ‘my hair just hangs there’ look. The discreet layering means there isn’t a need to do too much on a daily basis to keep it looking good. Just a simple blowout is already a big step. The color is a bit on the bright side. I must say, the color will need consistent upkeep to stay free of brass, but the low-maintenance styling is a plus.

#10 Tousled Blonde Waves for When You Want to Look Effortless
I love the messy vibe. You can tell it was done quickly, yet it gives you a lot of extra volume. This is perfect for people whose hair flattens out as the day goes on since these waves will help hold it up. The mixture of light and dark blonde is one of the best color combinations in my opinion. It looks so sunkissed and natural as opposed to the “I just left the salon” vibe. This style is very flattering on oval and heart faces. A little more love is needed in the morning for longer hair. So, keep that texturizing spray close!

#11 Soft Graduated Blonde Layers That Just Flow
For a classy but not boring hairstyle, layered blonde hair is an example. Graduated layers add movement to the hair while still providing a lot of length. The light blonde color reflects warmth to the skin giving a nice glow to the whole look. This look will be most manageable for straight, medium thickness hair. After a quick style it is ready to go. The only upkeep this look will require is regular appointments to touch up color. With lighter shades, new growth is very obvious. This look makes hair appear polished. Not keeping up with color appointments can give a very unkempt appearance.

#12 Golden Tousled Curls That Are Giving Main Character Energy
If you’re over 50 and have natural curls or strong waves, don’t even think about straightening it. Just look at these gorgeous golden blonde curls! The way they beautifully frame the face cannot be duplicated with a flat iron. The length is smart as well as the deep side part, which is a wonderful way to add some drama. With curls the biggest thing is to keep them hydrated so a really good curl cream is going to be your best friend.

#13 Silver Waves with Curtain Bangs That I Cannot Stop Staring At
Curtain bangs are an amazing style for most people. They help separate the front of the hair and create a flowy, style, look, and finish. If you happen to be sporting gray or silver hair, this style will look beautiful on you. This style gives a lot of volume during the wavy finish of the style. For the frame of your face, the softer bangs will look relaxed and more modern. If your hair happens to be straight and thin this style gives you the extra volume and texture that is needed. This style is easy, but if you want uniform waves you’ll need a large barrel curling iron and about 5 minutes.. If you are a lucky person who has waves naturally. If you don’t it will just take about five minutes to create the same look using a large barrel curling iron.

#14 Luxurious Silver Blonde Waves with the Most Gorgeous Contour
This hair definitely shows volume. The cut and waves create a full and bouncy look, regardless of whether your hair is fine or not. The silvery blonde hair color is elegant and enhances the hairstyle. It really compliments the style’s ability to reflect and capture light. The waves that frame the chin and contour the face nicely, especially with oval and round face shapes. This style is definitely a bit of a commitment, but look at the payoff. If I could wear this style for years, I’d do it. I might have to do a bit of complaining, but I’d happily sit in that salon chair to do it.

#15 Copper Layered Waves That Are a Total Wildcard and I Love It
I know this may not be officially labeled as a blonde color, I have to keep it because it’s absolutely STUNNING! And to be honest, if you’ve been blonde your whole life, maybe it’s time to shake things up! This radiant copper with layered waves is the perfect style to add fullness to your hair if it’s been thinning. The warm tones add depth and the layers create movement making everything look thicker. Personally, I’d say it looks the best with fair to medium skin tones. Let me be honest, the copper color is going to fade quickly. So you will have to come in for color treatments more often and use a color-depositing shampoo to keep it as vibrant as possible. But with the way it frames the face, especially with heart or oval shapes, is incredibly pretty and I think it will be worth all the upkeep.
