I was reorganizing my station and found a photo from 2019 of a client who came in asking for “just a trim.” She walked out feeling fabulous with a layered lob! This haircut is a great opportunity where you don’t have to make an *extreme* commitment, but the reward is so worth it! A layered lob is the perfect in between. You have enough length to put it up in a ponytail, but it moves in a way that long hair just doesn’t.
What I love about it the most is that it looks different on everyone! I have done layered lobs on girls with curly hair, fine hair, thick hair, and it never looks the same because the layers sit differently. That’s something you can’t say about every cut! If you have been going back and forth about it, HERE are a TON of examples to help. Let’s get started!

I won’t lie: this haircut does require you to get pretty frequent trims to maintain that clean look because once those layers start growing out uneven and that start losing that effortless look fast. But for the people that do keep up on their haircut appointments (no judgement, you know who you are) this is gorgeous.

Isn’t it such a good combination to have bangs with a layered lob? Soft bangs keep it looking young without looking too costume-y, and with layers to the cheeks, it all ties together beautifully. The hair here is a little thinner, and with this cut, that works to your advantage, so the layers won’t get too heavy. If your hair is fine, make sure to have a good volumizing product because days will come when you want a little extra volume at the roots.
#4: Textured Bangs Meet Warm Auburn and I’m Obsessed
I ADORE YOUR HAIRCUT! Your bangs are adorable, and I am a huge fan of the layers! But the real star of the show is the COLOR! The warm auburn is absolutely gorgeous on you, and it really compliments the layered bob. The choppy bangs look nice and I think you avoided the self-haircut-at-2am look very well! However, if you think you want to try an auburn color, warm tones like this can give you an inner glow effect, so proceed with caution. I love a red moment and this is a slightly biased opinion, but you can trust me.

This cut may seem really simple, but in actuality, it is very intricate. The layers are very subtle. They almost seem like they are there to keep the ends from looking blunt and heavy. When combined with other elements, the layers give the hair a really nice natural movement that is very difficult to recreate. The length is a little bit above the shoulders. This is my max length for lobs as it prevents the hair from getting caught under jacket collars while still providing that “hair” effect. One downside to this cut is that it definitely could use some styling. A spritz of texturizing spray, a bit of scrunching, and this cut would have a lot more to work with.
#6: Straight and Sleek with Just Enough Layer to Keep It Interesting
If you like a more simple and clean look, this is your haircut. Layering is so subtle that it really just adds some movement and framing without shouting “I HAVE LAYERS” in a good way of course. There is some asymmetry which gives it a modern touch without being one of those 2008 angled bobs (we’ve all been there). You can wear this cut straight and sleek or add some waves and it will look like a totally different haircut which is a sign of a really good haircut.

If your hair is on the finer side, this haircut will create the illusion of having a head full of thicker, fuller hair, which is kind of a magician’s trick. I’m often asked if a layered lob can work with curls, and I show THIS picture. Soft curls add life and volume while the auburn color and subtle highlights create more depth and make the curls look more dimensional. With textured hair, it’s important the mid-length cut stops everything from getting too heavy at the bottom. You want the curls to bounce, not droop. I’ll be honest, achieving this look every day will require you to put in some effort when it comes to styling, but the cut itself is fairly low maintenance in between washes.
#11: Subtle Graduation, Big Impact
This cut has a really nice graduation technique at the ends that is very easy to miss but it helps the movement of the cut a lot. It’s not really dramatic so it won’t bring a lot of attention to itself however it makes the hair swing and flow really naturally. I don’t know what it is, but this looks pricey and I think it has to do with the face framing bangs soft with the hair and the overall health and shine. You can tell this person takes care of their hair and it shows. The length is manageable and the bangs are giving that effortless French girl vibe. Everything looks intentional and clean. If you have fine hair with medium density this would look stunning on you.
