While I was reorganizing my space recently, I came across an old photo book – I think it was from 2009. I’ve recognized most of the clients in this book and they all had layers: those chunky, obvious, very ‘Rachel Green ten years too late’ layers. Some of them actually looked good though. The thing about long hair and layers is that even when the technique isn’t 100% spot on, the hair moves, and does something for you that a single-length cut never achieves. I’ve had long hair clients before – healthy, shiny, and all one length – and it just… sits there, like it’s waiting for permission to do something. But as soon as you add some layers, even subtle ones, suddenly the whole thing just wakes up.
The real magic with getting long hair layered is there is an infinite set of options for how to do it. I have done layers that start at the cheek and layers that start below the collarbone and those haircuts come from completely different worlds, even if they are both considered “long layers.” What looks best depends on your hair’s density, texture, and how your hair behaves when styled. I once had a client with fine hair but a lot of it, and for two years we tried to determine the best layering approach for her until we finally figured it out. If your hair air dries straight, then you will likely do very little to maintain this look. But in the case where you have a lot of waves or any kind of frizz, you will have to put in some effort to get this look. That means doing some work like flat ironing or blow drying. The haircut looks like it should be worth it, but I’m sure losing hair monthly becomes annoying. I like the haircut looks simple enough to do yourself, but it probably takes a lot of time to maintain the quality with all that conditioning involved. The layers are softly done and mid-back length which gives a nice graceful movement around the face (and yes I can see the light reflecting off them). It does make me wonder if she is naturally blessed out or is just a devotee to hair oil (I imagine buying a new bottle every month would definitely be a hassle). It’s probably a pain once the cut settles into that nonchalant, casual look. I also wonder if the cut would be self-defeating to someone with fine hair because without some sort of product to give it body, I can see how the hair would tend to go a little flat and it might just be a lot.

Wow! Look at how shiny this hair is! The hair shine is more important than the haircut, but the cut looks amazing too. The face-framing layers are soft and blended and they make the hairstyle look younger. If your hair is naturally wavy, this will be easy to style between visits because the waves will move the layers and not fight them. If you aren’t naturally shiny, I suggest doing a good treatment once a week to get that kind of shine.

I love the look! It’s so classic and has that soft, bouncy finish, not stiff and tight. Although, the overall look might be pretty expensive. Bouncy ends are where the expensive feels come in! If you want those waves to look purposeful, you will have to use a light mousse and do some scrunching while diffusing. On a lazy day, you can let your hair air dry and it will still look good, although it may give you a different look.

This hairstyle may look like it takes a long time to do, but it is actually super easy to do and the results are amazing. Curls are soft, defined, and beautifully blended, allowing the person to hardly notice how the different layers snag and catch at different lengths. To top it off, the warm, rich color is just to die for. The color may even look so good that people stop you on the streets to ask how you maintain your hair to look that good. The perfect hair type for this hairstyle is medium to thick hair. This is because a good hair density is crucial to help the curls stay in place and to help the overall look of the style look full. However, if your hair is finer, you can still do this style. Just keep in mind that without a really strong hold setting spray, your curls probably won’t last as long compared to other people with thicker hair.

The overall shape of the haircut is very nice, it appears very dense and has been layered well. I really like soft bangs and curtain bangs. The layers look so airy and bouncy, almost like they have been blow dried with a rounded brush which I really like. I get very excited for haircuts like these because there is a lot that can be done with the thickness. I will say that a haircut like this does require some effort in terms of styling to create that amount of volume and definition. It’s not a wash and go haircut for most people, but the result is definitely worth it.

Amazing color service is always honest about upkeep to clients because I love how burgundy looks on different people. It fades quickly, especially with color as intense as this one. From the picture, you can probably tell this client will need frequent touch-up sessions, probably every couple of weeks. Now, look at the cut and color as well. The color is at least a deep, beautiful, rich burgundy. The layers in this haircut are creating a gorgeous cascading effect with the waves of the length. The overall cut is quite versatile too, as she can wear it straightened, and it would look like a completely different cut from the one shown here, which I always appreciate in a haircut. If burgundy is your color, and if you want to cross the high bar on maintenance and touch-ups, this is one of the best examples I have seen.
#16: Soft Layered Long Cut with Warm, Rich Color
This cut is super classically pretty. The soft framing layers are so good and really complement the warm tones in the color. This is such a great example of a look that shows how thick dramatic layers are not needed to achieve a big change. It really is just about taking the right amount of weight so the hair can really breathe and move. The end waves are such a lovely touch. A little help from a straightener or large barrel curling wand will do the trick, but it’s for sure not an hour’s worth of styling effort.

The length on this is amazing. Creating an unfinished effect is a really stylish design choice, and I appreciate the texturing at the ends. It’s contemporary and gives character to the overall look. It’s also not overly done, and lends to the idea that she has been out and about living her life and has slashed the look in the morning. It still looks amazing. The framing layers and the soft waves add a lot of volume without crossing the line into an overtly done look. This would be an easily maintainable style if your hair has some natural waves and movement to it. All you would need is the right cut and your hair would pretty much take care of everything else.

Although if you have thick hair it may need some trims to keep the ends light and free from weight.

What a *joy* this cut really is! I love the clean look and how smooth and blended the layers are! There is absolutely nothing choppy or textured, and this has such a beautiful fall to it with movement built in. The gentle face framing layers really soften things up and I know this ’s a nice touch and I feel like the addition of a deeper or richer color like chocolate or warm espresso hues could really do the cut justice. It will emphasize the dimension created by the layers. I would say the maintenance is somewhat moderate on this cut…if you keep up with trims and use a good conditioner it will do good things for you. This cut will absolutely treat you well!
